"All that can be heard from a flame is it's crackling, even as it burns whole towns to the ground."
[- - -]
Name:Gaizen Mein
Nickname: Gai - Gaizen feels that his name is a bit strenuous to say, and so he prefers the shortened form of Gai.
Flicker - A comparison of Gaizen to a small flame, a play on how ironic it is that such a soft spoken individual was gifted the most aggresive element.
Age:26
Gender:Male
Sexuality:Bisexual, but prefers other men.
Role:Firebender Representative
Primary Element:Fire
Secondary Element:Lightning
Appearance: Gaizen has semi-short dirty blond hair (an uncommon trait in fire benders) that is usually fairly messy, as he doesn't particularly care for his appearance, and amber colored eyes. He is average height, about 5'10", and weighs around 170 pounds. He is fairly muscular, a result of training under his mother and practicing archery.
Style: Gaizen tends to wear a sleeveless orange shirt, with black outlines and long comfortable black pants, covering a part of his black boots. When it is particularly cold outside, Gaizen wears a thin black jacket over his shirt.
Distinct Markings: With fire bending comes the risk of self harm, and so at a young age he accidentally left a burn mark circling arm in the form of a thin oval. The burn wasn't particularly sever, so it isn't very noticeable, only presenting itself in the form of a slight discoloring in Gaizen's skin.
Gaizen has a tattoo of a black "C" on his left shoulder. The letter stands for his sisters name, Celia, from when she forced him to get it after he had lost a bet against her on who could shoot down the most cans without bending. Although he was embarrassed by it at first, after his sister passed away he was comforted by it's presence.
Likes & Dislikes:Likes - Rainy or foggy weather, sweets, puns, archery, sleeping, learning new ways to bend.
Dislikes - Prejudice, hypocrisy, confrontation, self-righteousness, labor, heights.
Strengths & Weakness: Gaizens ultimate strength is his open mindedness, allowing him to accept and adept to new ideas and situations, outside of and during combat. He tends not to dwell on the past, and works towards new goals as things change, allowing him to bypass any panic he might feel. This is not to say that he will always respond appropriately, but simply that he understands how to read into new situations. This also leads him to being more tolerant than others.
Gaizens ultimate weakness would be his crippling awkwardness, leading him to not have many friends. Some might mistake him as dismissive, when really he is paying attention. This may also cause him to an inability to do something he knows he should.
Personality: Gaizen is a quiet person, not exactly by choice, but because of how socially inept he is. He often finds himself unable to speak around others, especially people he is not familiar with. Despite this, Gaizen's thoughts roar in his mind, and when he finds himself saying something, it's usually because he has a strong opinion on the matter. He rarely loses his temper, and does his best to remain neutral during arguments. This is not to say that Gaizen is shy. He enjoys meeting new people, but it takes time for him to approach them.
When forced into a confrontation, whether it be verbal or in the form of a battle, Gaizen tries to remain cool, but usually is unsuccessful. He might say something without filtering it through his mind first, and so he may come off as blunt. He often gets embarrassed when he says something and realizes that what he said may have been rude or inconsiderate. Similarly, he may get excited in fights and acts without thinking a situation through, leading him into adapting a fluid form of fighting based on changing sitations.
Background: In the lower part of the mountains lies a small, quiet, isolated town inhabited by fire benders and non benders. This small town currently has a population of around sixty, one of which was Gaizen when he was born to a fire bending mother, and a non bending deceased father. He lived a relatively normal life, helping his mother and sister do the work assigned to them around the village. Gaizen was a quiet person since he was born, but not to the extent that he is now. Although his mother was kind, and cared for him, Gaizen only opened up to a few people, one of which being his older sister: Celia.
Celia was seven years older than Gaizen, who was born just after his father passed away. While their mother worked, Celia was the one who took care of Gaizen. When Gaizen was eight, she had begun teaching him archery, which she herself learned from their father. Simultaneously, he was being taught fire bending by his mother when she had the time, who was overjoyed with having another bender in the family (as Celia was a non bender.) Gaizen loved both arts, and enjoyed learning from his family. Not only was Celia his teacher, but his closest friend. He never bothered to make many other friends, beyond one or two, and spent most of his time with her. This only set him up to be all the more devastated when she died of an unknown disease.
Gaizen was totally devastated. The person closest to him was gone.
He shut himself up, and rarely spoke at all anymore. All the time he spent isolating himself would present itself whenever he did try to speak in the form of awkwardness, either having him say something inappropriate by accident or forcing him to completely hold his tongue. Eventually, when he was eighteen he left to travel alone in order to see what else was in the world beyond his home village, leaving his mother behind in tears. The guilt was overwhelming, and he thought about returning every day, but once he saw the incredible amount of discrimination occurring in the Earth Kingdom, he felt it was his duty to stay and offer himself to a greater cause, leading him to join the white lotus. His goal now is to help fight the prejudice happening in the land, and return to his mother eventually to take care of her in her until her death.
Other: Gaizen carries around a short bow, and a quiver of arrows. He uses this to fight when does not wish to reveal himself as a fire bender (as people tend to get nervous around a group of people known to be thieves and bandits.) He can form bolts of flame as he pulls it's string back, arrow-less, as it helps him with concentrating his bending, allowing it to move farther and hit harder. Gaizen incorporates this into his fighting style, but can fight just as effectively without it. The bow is made out of a black metal so it isn't damaged by his fire.
It's hard deciding on a single favorite moment from Avatar, but I guess it would have to be Katara/Zuko's final fight with Azula.
Sorry it took so long! If the bow is too much, I can drop it :).
