A Long Trip There

Outpost "Germa III Fort", "Fort" class fleet support station, orbit of Germa III, CL "Istria" dock

A number of men and women, some marked with various tags of EDF special operations units and other from various larger or smaller organizations which make JCU, were boarding "Istria". Amongst them only four had the rank of Major, and one of those with such a rank was the designated commander of team 3, Major Yakov Shinosaki. He was dressed, just like all of the other EDF soldiers, in a basic military combat uniform and carried his two pistols, the rest of the gear for all of them was already teleported into the main armory of "Istria". Just like the rest of unit leaders, four Majors and a Colonel, Yakov was in the middle of checking if all the members of his units were present, deserting was a rare occurrence both in EDF and JCU, but you never know so it was needed to check just in case. He called out the next name, the dead last on his list, a JCU attache, and probably the least experienced of them all: "Attache Megumi Wolfbane Soma!?" He walked up and down the docking rig which connected "Istria" and the station, calling out for the last person on his list...

Megumi was running hard, a white haired young man at her heels. She was moving around groups of people on the dock, cursing softly as she saw the clock. "Bane, if you make me miss this I swear..." The young man smiled and said "easy, sister, they can't leave without their doctor can they?" She sighed and saw the "Istria" and said "I'll meet you on board." She reached onto her side and pulled out a small tube and hit the side button. The tube grew with a soft glow to the length of a boa staff which she used to pull volt herself over the side of the docking rig and land right behind the major as he looked around. She hit the button again and the staff returned to its travel size and she said "Megumi Wolfbane soma reporting, commander" she leaned against the wall, to hide her panting

"You are late Attache Wolfbane. Unfortunately for you, you have already been placed under my command, so that means that I can punish you as I see fit," Yakov said as he turned to the woman and after quickly marking her as coming but being late he went to say: "Report at seventeen o'clock in the armory and try not to be late alright?" Then he proceeded on with his task and soon under his guidance the team assigned to him was inside the "Istria". Without a wish to stop other teams from entering Yakov then lead the unit trough the corridors, most of them quite narrow, of the ship to the area in which their team, as well as the whole infiltration force, was given to use for the week of travel that will be needed for them to get, without detection, to Musria II. He split their rooms in such a way that one experienced combatant was joined with one of those which had less then a dozen or so orbital drop or IRS missions. He himself decided to take that latecomer of Attache Wolfbane in his room, if nothing else to keep an eye on her and hopefully give a chance to prove herself before they have to droppod on the planet. The information about the pairings and rooms was distributed trough the mission members via a network and then Yakov proceed to his and Wolfbane's room doors. He turned to see if she was here and said, loudly enough to be heard even if she was not next to him:"Attache Wolfbane, you are with me. Hopefully you won't make any more stupid mistakes if I am around." He waited for her to join him ...

Wolfbane was there the only time, use her skill set to be silent until she dropped her bag onto the floor of her room and said "I don't plan on it, sir....but being late wasn't a stupid mistake....just a lost of time judgement. I would do it again. Given the reason was just as important" she pulled her jacket off just as there were running steps and the white haired man appeared at the door, brewing hard. Wolfbane forgot about the major and turned to him, her eyes watching him with concern. After a moment the young man smiled and said "she made it...she's going to be alright, wolf...we did it" Wolfbane sighed with relief and smiled. "Thanks for letting me know, brother...." Bane turned to the major and said "it's my fault she was late sir, we had a emergency and I needed her. Doctor Bane Soma"

"Hm, I don't remember you being on the member list, are you a part of this starship's crew or the station's garrison? Well since it was important I guess I can overlook it, but be sure to report in next time you are going to be late Attache Wolfbane," Yakov said while putting his things next to one of the two beds which occupied it. "If you wish you two can go and have a talk, Attache Wolfbane just remember that the initial team briefing is at three pm Earth Time. Don't be late," the major said while quickly unpacking the most needed of his stuff. He said as he finished unpacking and slowly headed to the doors: "Naturally you are also welcomed to join me Attache Wolfbane, on the task of checking if all of our equipment and supplies have been loaded on and are safe for transport to mission starting point. One extra pair of eyes and hands is always welcomed on such tasks." He stopped near the room doors and waited for one of the two to say or do something.

Bane said quickly "I'm attached to the ship sir, last minute. The doctor who was suppose to go had a emergency so I was asked to come instead, since I knew one of the members of the team already" wolf nodded and said "we can talk later. I'll go and help you sir, to make up for my lateness" bane nodded then said quietly "I'll come find you if she calls..." Wolf nodded and bane left, leaving the major and ninja alone once more. Wolf moved over to him and said "I'll unpack later. I don't have up much to anyway"

After the ship's doctor, which also meant a part of EDF Space Fleet left, Yakov said to Megumi: "Well let's get this done Attache Wolfbane, hopefully nothing will be missing." Then he lead the way to the first stop, the armory in which their weapons, spare ammo and armors were stored. He handed a small hand-held computer to Megumi which displayed a long list of equipment of the team which should be in this armory. "I read the serial numbers and you check on the list, if anything is missing we should notice after a run or two," the major said while approaching the first pile of stuff marked with the identification of their team. Soon he begun to read out the serial number and all that Megumi had to do was to check them on the list.

Megumi nodded, going down the list and marking off the items when he read them aloud. After a time she looked up and said "seems everything is here...." Something seemed to be bugging her and she put the tablet down and looked around the room. "But something is missing. It's not on the list but there should be hand held weapon chargers in here and I'm not seeing them"

"No reason for them to be there, since most weapons today can operate for years without chargers or use ammo-stored power. For those rare pieces which still have a low capacity battery all military armored suits have universal adaptive charging ports," Yakov explained to Megumi, guessing that she didn't know much about military tech. Then he moved to the next pile of equipment and continued reading out he serial numbers. He stopped for a second to move away one of the larger pieces of equipment and then went on with the task on the hand.

Megumi simply nodded, checking off the things he read. She already wasn't liking this mission. She hated when they teamed up with other groups, they always acted like they knew everything. And this major was treating her like a child. If he knew what she could really do....

Yakov just let the discomfort on Megumi's face let by, if she was not happy with something she should just say so. He wondered what bothered her but he was both to well-behaved and preoccupation with the task at hand to pry into it. Instead he hoped that the boring but attention-requiring task at the hand would occupy her mind so she wouldn't have time to think about anything else.

The work went on and some hour and half later the things were all checked, everything was there and the major cloud let a slight sound of relief before saying: "Well that is all for now Attache Wolfbane. How about we treat ourselves to a meal in the cafeteria as a reward for the work?" He was planing to sue the fact that knew most of the crew of "Istria", since the ship was once operating from the same base he was stationed at, to get one of the chiefs in the cafeteria to get some special desert or food out so this Attache that he was with would open up to him. But first he would need her to accept the invitation ...

Wolf looked at him, studying him then nodded slightly. "I'm in...can't be too long though. I need to meet with my brother later" She put the tablet down and followed the major out of the store room, her hands in her pockets as they walked.

Bane was checking medical supplies with one of the other doctors on board who looked at him and said "So...Dr. Soma...I've heard good things. Is it true your sister is coming with us?" Bane smirked and said "Yes she is...this mission should be a piece of cake"

It didn't take them long to get to the cafeteria since it was in the same general area of the ship as the armory in which they working until now. Except for a few other members of the mission the place was almost deserted, as most of the crew of "Istria" was on their stations, asleep or enjoying their free time. Yakov chose one of the tables that was quite away from the rest of the members of the mission which were present, four EDF Marines of the JSO (Joint Space Operations) which were playing poker and three pairs of JCU personnel each of them doing their own thing - one was playing Shogi, the next was watching anime and the last was immersed in some magical calculations. Yakov asked: "What do you want? It is partial self-service so I will need to go and get our orders." He waited for her to reply so he cloud go and take their meals ...

Megumi looked at him and said "Whatever you get. I can eat anything" She was looking around the room, feeling the shadows around and getting a real good feel of the ship. Her powers gave her that extra sense, feeling and hearing what her shadows did. And she was slowly taking all the shadows on the ship. She closed her eyes and crossed her legs under the table, letting her emotions go and taking deep breathes. She needed to find her calm again.

After quickly glancing over the kitchen staff Yakov spotted one familiar face and called out to him. A quick talk resulted in two full plates of beef and rice, together with various vegetables and small cups filled with sauces which the Major soon carried to the table where Megumi was waiting. He placed one plate in front of Megumi and the other on his side of the table: "I managed to make one of the chiefs to bring this out, the main dish is Kobe beef and Kyushu rice with various vegetables grown in Japan and a collection of Earth's famous sauces, all from actual grown plants. A little taste of home as a godspeed before our journey." After putting his own plate down he returned to the counter and produced two glasses and three bottles, one of spring waters from the Kanto region, the second a Coca Cola, 100% un-replicated version, and another of a mid 34th century Californian wine. He brought all of this to the table and said, while sitting down: "Some of Earth's classical products, completely non produced by replicators. God bless the Space Fleet and their will to spoil elite crews like this one. So attache Wolfbane, if I might ask, what are your thoughts about this mission and this joint cooperation?"

She didn't open her eyes until he came back and sat down, then when asked a question opened her eyes. They were glowing softly which faded quickly as she said "for the mission, I don't really have much to speak on thoughts. It should be interesting and a challenge but apart from that I'm just hoping we don't take someone's home. As for the joint operation ...." She paused and took a few bites of food before saying "it would be nice for the groups to work to together. We are fighting for the same planet, not just countries as it used to be. This could be the start of a new way of thinking or end up in bloodshed. Which out come? I don't really know" she reached for the water and poured herself some, then looked at the major. "What about you sir? What are your thoughts?"

"Hm, the mission, well if nobody screws up than it should be the usual; drop in, scout and gather info about the target, if necessary destroy said target and then scatter and return when possible. As for the cooperation," he made a stop there and said: "Well it is not the first time that we work with someone outside of the military, trough I am wondering if all will actually go well, especially given that unlike us a nice portion of JCU didn't go any training similar to a military one. But still we need someone with knowledge of Europa Corp and most of the ones on the JCU mission worked or had contact with them so they have valuable information about how Europa Corp works. The others selected are those I find actually more useful and less prone to disobeying orders just because of a whim or some other nonsensical reason. Like martial artists, combat shrine maidens and other amongst which are also ninja." He took a short break to put some food in himself and then continued: "Now I would like to ask you one thing, miss Wolfbane. How much do you know about EDF droppod methods, IRS mission standard action plans, equipment and so on?"

Wolf looked at him, thinking it thru and said "I know what I need to know for the mission. What I don't know I learn quickly. I've worked with your military before, and I believe will be just fine. As for those other ninjas your worried about, don't be. The mission always comes first to us. We get the job done no matter what. Honor is on the line if we do not. And so are lives, which to us...we do not take lightly. Or on whim." She finished her plate and sat back, looking into the majors eyes. She didn't like how he spoke of those she called comrades. True, they weren't military, but that didn't make them any less then the soldiers walking around them now.

"I am not worried about ninja but about guys like them," Yakov said while pointing to the two mages engaged in some magical calculations,"They are the liability factor that I would not want on my mission. Most of them are as serious as a kid but have the firepower of an IFV or tank." He finished the meal and then said: "Now as for the desert." Then he stood up and went to quickly pick up two jars of ice cream he returned and said: "Some ice cream, it is not from Earth but Mars. Not like it is much of a difference. So on another matter, what do you use your free time on Wolfbane? I doubt you just train every moment of your life."

She watched to two mages working while he got ice cream, thinking. They deserved a chance to prove themselves. When it came to life or death, the magi she knew always pulled thru. When the major came back andhanded her the jar she took it gently and said "I don't have much free time on my hands, sir....I learn new things, try new skills...care for my loved ones...in my family I have a job to do that takes up much of my time" she took a bite of ice cream, her thoughts back home for a moment. Then she said "what about you sir? Do you have a family back home?"
