Setting: R**** H*** High School
It is 2:00 pm when panicked voices over the intercom announce a school-wide lockdown, effective immediately. This is not a drill, and the voice says as much. Your class has been caught in the media center, and all exits are quickly locked. You all huddle in a back room of the media center, your reactions ranging from tense to frightened. At 2:10 the intercom crackles on with the voice of the principal, who announces in a grim tone that there are multiple shooters closing in on the school and that under no circumstances should anyone leave the room or building. He specifically instructs teachers to stay away from windows and to keep students away from them as well.
You and your class wait for hours with no news. Trapped in the center of the school, you are situated in an unfortunate deadspot, and the school wifi is down, so no phones can get a signal.
At 7:24pm, a loud crash is heard, followed by the lights flickering. Less than half of the lights turn back on, casting some areas of the room into hazy shadows. The rest of the school is similarly affected. It seems as if the power has been damaged. A few minutes after you heard the crash, you distantly hear pounding on the media center doors. Tentatively, a brave student is elected to venture out and check to see what the problem is.
"Oh my god...."
A few of you, huddled back in the room, ask what is happening. When he doesn't respond, you all rush out of the room to see what had happened. What you see shocks you into silence like your brave classmate.
The doors are smeared with blood. Through the red-tinted glass, you can make out figures biting and ripping apart a sobbing young boy, who stops struggling before your eyes. After a few more moments, the figures cease their violence and walk away, leaving the boy motionless and limp against the door. You continue to stare in shock, unable to believe what had happened, when the impossible happens yet again that day. The boy's limbs tremble and shake before finding the floor. He pushes himself to his feet, blood pouring out of his wounds, and walks away, his left arm dangling limply, only a string of flesh keeping it attached. The arm falls off as he lurches out of sight.
You and your classmates murmur to one another, one word in particular being passed around.
"Zombies..."
