Song Of The Void
_______
Having finally finished her job for the day, Runia was returning to her cottage at the forest's edge. As usual, it was a most ordinary walk, uninterrupted by anything. When she arrived, however, she gasped in shock and outrage. Her door was thrown off of its hinges, maybe five feet away from the frame, and the windows were shattered. It had taken an exorbitant amount of money to get enough glass to put over them, and it now lay broken on the ground. Running inside, she surveyed the mess her usually impeccably-kept cottage had become. Furniture knocked over, bed twisted to the side, burn marks on the floor, and one very conspicuous missing object. The stilettos that hung over the mantle were gone. She began looking furiously around the small, two-room cottage, but could find no marks of them. At length, she departed from the half-deconstructed cottage and returned to the village.
No dice. Every person she asked could say nothing about her cottage. She cursed herself for living in such solitude. But why would somebody destroy my home like that? she wondered, and why take the daggers? No answers were forthcoming. She trekked back to her cottage at the end of the day, tired, dirty, disheveled and disappointed. Righting the bed, she threw herself upon it, fully clothed, and stewed angrily for a few minutes before succumbing to sleep.

Runia was awakened by a strange sound from very close by. It sounded almost like... "A person." she finished aloud in a very quiet whisper. The sound came again and, mustering up her courage, she sat up quickly and spoke in a loud voice, "Who's there? Why are you in my house?" The noise stopped for a moment.
