In her mind, the Capitol was being wasteful and foolish. Rubbing their fortune in the face of others wasn't very wise and she wondered if that sort of lavish idiocy would come back to bite them in the ass somehow. Katniss sure hoped so. She took another drink when they stepped outside. There were still people around but it was a lot less stuffy and took some of the pressure off. With less eyes on her, she felt much better. Haymitch said they'd have to go in again and she rolled her eyes. She knew that but she didn't want to be reminded of it. She looked around and figured escape would be unsuccessful for anyone who dared attempted it.

She could picture Effie's reaction too, ranting about how rude it was to try and run away with the Ball in full swing. She grinned slightly and leaned into his arm. "I almost can't believe those are real." She looked up at the sky. The Capitol was so bright and blinding that she was pretty sure that the stars and possibly moon were fabricated by the awesome tech they had at their disposal. Katniss frowned and then realized there could be some kind of force-field keeping them all inside so of course escape would be futile. So much for jumping a fence. Of course her dress might make that a very funny scene to behold. "I don't." She corrected her previous statement.

The stars were pretty but she didn't think they were like the ones back home.

But she didn't really care about the sky, not when she was with Haymitch, both of them getting fresh air and not having to deal with the preppy people back behind them. "At least the plants are pretty..." And were more likely real. Katniss moved an arm around him and led them over to a small stone bench off to the side where several colorful plants and flowers were. It was out of the way but still close enough to the building that if something happened, they'd be close by to witness or do something. She took another drink and held it in her hands, the glass was smooth and frail and she wondered what district could make something so precious and yet struggle to put food on the table.

They had all sorts of food at the table.

He took a few of what looked good and grabbed a drink. Unlike Prim and Katniss and Haymitch, he picked something which was neon blue. It tasted weird but he liked it enough to follow Prim to a table where they could get off their feet. His drink was another tone of blue and yet he did't feel like it went well with his navy suit. Prim asked if he was having fun and he held back a snort. He was and he wasn't. It was hard to explain but he was surely enjoying time with Prim. "I think I am." He said after being quiet about the topic. They took a seat and he took another sip of the brightly colored drink.

"I am enjoying my time with you and that's what's important." Gale told Prim softly and began to eat some kind of pastry with meat on top of it. He took a bite and found it had some tomato sauce on it too. He let out an approving hum and finished it in his second bite. He had never had something so light and flavorful. Gale looked and saw Prim had snagged one of them too. "That is really good." He pointed to it on Prim's plate when he finally swallowed it. "I don't know what that is but it is great." He said. He didn't enjoy fancy food or seasoning because he wanted to stay true to hunting but he was experiencing so many great flavors and textures that he was beginning to develop a better pallet or at least a better excitement when it came to trying new things.

He tried another small item which turned out to remind him of squash and bread. Apparently it was a butternut squash soup cradled in a buttery garlic crouton. Gale licked his lips and took another drink. The more he got to sit out and snack and chat with Prim, the more he was enjoying himself. Perhaps the drink had something to do with it? Either way, he picked up another selection. It looked like a dessert. It had whipped cream on top of chocolate fluff and under it was some kind of solid but thin brown cracker. "Here, try this." He smiled and held out for Prim to take a bite. When she did, he smiled and looked to hear a crash followed by a growl from someone. It had to be Johanna.

Turning, he saw she was standing in front of a nicely dressed older man and between them, there was a mess of glass and liquid. "For fuck's sake! What the fuck? I don't want to go fuck you so you just deliberately spill my fucking drink?!" She roared. By now the music had stopped and many people had quieted down to hear the commotion. "That is bullshit. I don't want to be here, none of us do and yet you try to exploit me? When will you guys ever fuck off? Seriously!" Johanna threw up her arms and the old man tried to apologize. Something about it didn't sit right with Gale. Was she right or was she just picking someone at random?

Peeta, meanwhile had located the Gamemaster and the two were having a quick, hushed conversation. He even showed Peeta his mockingjay pocket watch. Peeta knew this plan could work and that it would. They had more people and resources on their side and he was sure they could get things done to stop the killing of innocent people. "Go get me another drink now." Johanna continued to keep many eyes on her as she waved a hand at the man. "This crappy Ball is-" She was cut off by an official pulling her away. It didn't surprise Gale that there weren't any Peacekeepers but he hoped Johanna was okay. She had done something risky but he hoped the minute had been enough for Peeta to talk and sort things out.

"We do what you say, even if it's vile How dare all of you contribute to this torture." It seemed Johanna wasn't done yet as she tugged her arm free. "You all should be ashamed for what goes on. You make sure you sleep just fine thinking we're pampered before the Games but that is just as fucking bad as being in them. We're not pets, we're people!" She yelled as she was forcefully taken off. The party picked back up and Gale swallowed and looked back to Prim, very glad they hadn't been caught up in all that. He moved a hand under the table and grabbed Prim's hand, squeezing it. The Ball could now progress as planned now that Peeta had hopefully done what needed to be done.

"I don't think she was acting." He couldn't help but say quietly to Prim, his expression worried. "What she said

Back outside, Katniss looked up when she heard Johanna's voice. She was about to get up but she reconsidered it, thinking it might make matters worse if they tried to step in. What Johanna did was her own business after all. Katniss wasn't aware that the scene was for Peeta to tie up loose ends. She finished her drink in a few gulps and set it down. It took the edge off and she understood better why Haymitch drank so much. It made reality less real but she didn't mind where she was at the moment. "I guess we can hide out a bit longer?" Katniss looked to Haymitch. She was a bit hungry but she didn't feel like moving from where she was.

"I owe you a dance at some point..." Katniss pointed out and leaned her head on his shoulder. It wasn't fair that when they finally got to erase the line between them, they had to act like there was one. She knew they had to be careful but she didn't care, incidentally. Katniss leaned up and kissed him softly the same way he done before when no one had been looking. No one was paying them mind in the dark secluded area but even if there was a spotlight, she probably would have tried something anyway. Did they have to really dance with the others? Maybe not. She smiled warmly, in a very content mood thanks to the light buzz. It wasn't much but it was enough to make her feel less uncertain. "Though in these shoes...I'm not sure." She frowned, hoping it would be an excuse he'd buy or at least take pity on her.

Gale finished his plate and watched Prim, wondering if she wanted to dance again or walk around. "Would you like to dance again or look around?" He asked, hand still holding onto hers. Gale was good either way and just wanted to focus on them, not that the scene was out of the way. What would happened to Johanna? He wasn't sure and it made him ill. The Capitol could probably do anything and then fix her up like nothing ever happen. He shook the idea away, not wanting to ruin the mood, when he just wanted to salvage it.

Everything about the Capitol was fake, and Haymitch wouldn't have been surprised if the sky above them had been engineered to reflect a perfect night. Briefly, the idea of escaping had occurred to him, the same way it had two decades ago when he had first come to the ball. It wouldn't have been difficult, just hopping over the fence and making it through the Capitol to the wilds. Haymitch was older now, much more wise and he knew that his poorly put together escape plan would only get him punished and make it more difficult for Peeta in the long run—he wanted to do everything he could to make sure that Peeta's plan went smoothly, even if Haymitch didn't have the privilege of knowing exactly what it entailed.

It was clear that Katniss was having a few of the same thoughts, judging by her compliment to the surrounding foliage. The older man smirked slightly, his laugh nearly humorless as they took a seat on one of the many stone benches that lined the garden. “I'm not looking at the plants,” he said, trying to salvage the night he had been forced into. Katniss was a wonderful distraction from everything that was going on inside, and Haymitch felt at peace when he was with her. It was ironic, because she was so abrasive, the last person anyone would have been comforted by, but Haymitch liked that surprising aspect of her personality. They went together well; the same type of wounded.

Inside at the table, Prim was growing concerned with what was going on around her. She hadn't thought much of Peeta's warning about the ball, but now that Johanna was about to do something, the blonde was nervous. Hearing that Gale was enjoying their time together eased that worry slightly, and Prim smiled before having another sip of the liquid in her glass. “If you say so,” she said, looking questionably at the small pastry. Taking a chance, she picked it up and took a bite, enjoying the new texture and the savory flavor. She didn't know what it was either, but it was good and certainly very different from anything she'd ever had back home. The Capitol could only do so many nice things before Prim remembered that she and the other tributes in the room were going to have to kill one another in a little more than a week's time. Her appetite began to fade at the thought.

“What is it?” she asked, inspecting what Gale had held out for her. Before she leaned in to take a bite, a loud crash got her attention and Prim turned toward the sound. Johanna was there, glass and drink at her feet and already yelling about it. This must have been her distraction and Prim gave a glance around the room, trying to find Peeta. The crowd was large and the baker couldn't be seen, and Prim didn't want to seem suspicious, so she turned back to Johanna. The things she was saying weren't untrue, but they certainly ruined the carefully crafted mood the Capitol had set for them. Although Prim didn't necessarily care for Johanna, or like her attitude, the blonde still worried about what was going to happen to her. After all, the Capitol and Snow couldn't just let her get away with speaking her mind in a crowded room.

As Johanna was dragged away, things began to return to normal. Prim looked somberly at Gale and shook her head. “I don't either.” Suddenly, the night felt more wrong than it had before and Prim didn't want to be there anymore. Her excitement for the event was gone, but she knew that they couldn't just leave. This was also for Peeta, to help with sponsors and Prim wanted to do her part.

Outside, Haymitch had and was able to catch a glimpse of Johanna's scene. Had he been in on the plan, it would have been much harder for him to act concerned. Although, he assumed that she had just had too much to drink, events had always been hard on her and the Ball was full of people who felt entitled to tributes past and present. She was already being taken away, and Haymitch knew better than to try and stop the scene. “Probably a good idea,” Haymitch agreed, not wanting to go back inside when the Ball had just been interrupted and Snow was more than likely going to be looking for more troublemakers. Normally, Haymitch would have been all for the taunting, but he liked to think he had turned over a new leaf.

As Katniss leaned against him, Haymitch kept his arm around her. “We could dance now,” he suggested. The music had started to play once more, and they could hear it perfectly outside. Haymitch didn't care about the ball anyway, or impressing anyone inside, he just wanted to spend his time with Katniss while he could, while they weren't in direct danger. “I think your shoes have to stay on, though,” he added, chuckling softly. They looked nice on her—the whole outfit did and it was hard for Haymitch to keep his hands off of her.

“Maybe we should introduce ourselves to other people,” Prim suggested, thinking that she and Gale should do their part and get the attention of some sponsors. If the rich citizens of the Capitol remembered who they were, or had a positive interaction with them at the Ball, they would be much more willing to send gifts into the arena. “It might really help Peeta and,” she shrugged, “he could probably use it.” Peeta would have a lot to think about once the Games actually began and Prim didn't want him to have to worry about any of them starving or freezing to death in the middle of the night.

He mentioned that he had been talking about her in regards to the beautiful night. She grinned, unable to stifle the warmth that filled her up when he complimented her, let alone looked at her with those eyes of his. He had been the only person to make her feel like an actual woman, not some girl pretending to be in love, or someone’s sister or some pest who cheated to gain a victory. No, with Haymitch she felt accepted as she was without any sort of label or expectation. As they sat away from most of the curious eyes, Katniss wondered what Prim might be up to with Gale. She could be worried or she could be hopeful. Either way, she wanted to enjoy Haymitch and trust that the other two knew not to do anything stupid or reckless, which pretty much meant they couldn’t do snything she might want to do herself, like make an escape or some scene.

Had Katniss been in on the plan, she would have offered to raise a little hell with Johanna since she wanted to help. Bu she didn't know so she and Haymitch had to feel a bit helpless and out of the loop, but for now the ignorance wasn't so bad. From where they sat, the music could be heard and only a handful people had walked by, many of them older with drinks in their hands. She thought she spotted Beetee and Wiress on the other far side of the lawn looking up at the sky and pointing to something. She had a feeling they were quickly remarking about the power source among other things that went well over her head. Other than that, they weren't really noticed by anyone which was very welcomed in Katniss' mind, she didn't like the attention even though she knew it was useful given their daunting situation.

By this point, her left leg was still covered while her right one was now bare with the black fabric having fallen to the side. If she had known her dress was almost a distraction for her date, she may have tried to use it to her advantage. He suggested they could dance now and that he shoes would likely need to stay on. She glanced down at them with a slight frown. He was right and height they gave would be beneficial, even if she didn't like them. "I guess you're right." Katniss considered and got to her feet. If they were going to dance, she'd rather they do it now before she changed her mind. "Come on." She held out a hand for him. So far, the night had been alright though not much had happened and maybe if she actually did something, it might make the night actually fun.

And she already knew dancing with Haymitch was fun as it lead to fun things.

Gale could sense the room shift a little as people began to whisper about what had just happened. Snow made some gestures and the mood seemed to quick to revert to how things had been prior to Johanna’s outburst of sorts. Gale was sure she would be fine but he understood the concern. Johanna had more experience with the Capitol and the fragile ins and outs of everything. SHe surely knew what she had gotten into when she spoke to Peeta and all he and Prim could do was trust them and their actions. There was so much he felt they needed to know but he was hoping that Peeta would now be able to fill them in a bit more on what to expect and how things would work. Or hopefully work.

“I think that’s a good idea.” He replied to her. Katniss and Haymitch couldn’t be shouldered with the take of being District 12’s face, he and Prim had to step up and make sure people remembered them too. He was sure Peeta would be able to sell them if sponsors and viewers actually cared about them. Gale knew Peeta would use the angle of Katniss’ sister but Gale really didn’t want to do that tonight. Prim and Katniss were sisters yes, but there was more to them than that and he hoped the training and performance at the end of it proved that. Gale got up and wiped his mouth and hands before he offered his hand to Prim. For now he figured they couldn’t be too close but he wanted to prove they were still united in a sense.

The pair headed off to walk around the large ballroom and Gale settled on a cluster of people who seemed to be talking about some of the previous Games. “Excuse me.” Gale said, his hand now around Prim’s back as he interjected. “That really was a good way, I believe that was the one Finnick won.” He commented, hating how he had to pretend to enjoy the brutality of it all. He glanced to Prim and offered her a smile though it was a bit forced. Gale had no idea how Haymitch or Peeta had to put up with this crap. “My name is Gale Hawthorne and this is Primrose Evderdeen-”

“Oh it is so lovely to meet you!” A woman cried out, she had on a black wig with streaks of neon pink and green which reached down to her lower back. The man beside her had on a red and gold outfit which matched the decor. He reached out to shake both their hands.

“It’s so funny, you and your sister look nothing alike.” He laughed. “Contrary to Sindy’s hair, I do prefer those with your hair color.” He said. “It’s so light, like the sun or a million stars coming together.” He said. “My name is Daviod.” He added smoothly. Gale looked back to Prim, not sure why he had an odd feeling about the group, especially Daviod.

“So...are you enjoying the Ball?” Gale spoke up, trying to push the man’s attention off of Prim. It was just weird. Sindy said she was and asked them the same. “Yes, I think we are.” He said and looked to Prim for her to answer.

The garden was far from crowded, and it was a welcomed escape for Haymitch, who had quickly grown tired of the overflow of guests inside. Anything formal, be it a Ball or even something for the mentors had never been something that Haymitch had enjoyed before, and he didn't expect to start to enjoying himself now. The only bright spot in the abysmal darkness that was the Capitol's idea of a good time was Katniss, who also seemed to be tired of being anywhere but upstairs and away from the public eye. They hadn't been there for very long, but Haymitch was already wondering when he could make a run for it, and possibly take Katniss with him. Although the real point of the Ball was to assist Peeta, Haymitch didn't necessarily think that he was a vital part of gaining sponsors. He had already won, and he had been charming a kid; people remembered that sort of thing.

As Katniss rose from the bench, Haymitch couldn't help but chuckle slightly. He reached for her hand, “I meant out here,” he looked around at the large and mostly empty space. No one would see them out there, no one would think how close they were was scandalous, and the two former Victors could squeeze out another few moments alone before having to return inside. The music was still playing, and the silent workers of the Capitol had crafted them a perfect night—it would have been a crime not to take advantage of it. Haymitch knew that Katniss didn't want to dance in front of anyone, either, and he didn't mind helping her to avoid it for a while longer.

Standing himself, Haymitch gave her hand a tug and lead her away from the bench, but deeper into the garden. Flowers of all colors were in full bloom, perfectly engineered to be at their most beautiful stage during the Ball just in case any guest was to wander into the garden. “I don't want to go back in there anyway,” he said, pulling her close as he set his other hand on her waist, “not yet at least.” Going back into the den of lions was the last thing Haymitch wanted to do that night. A few more stolen moments with Katniss would suffice before he had to subject himself to plastic faces and neon hair; an entire room full of Effie with much less heart.

Slowly, much like the night before, Haymitch began to dance with Katniss. “You're a little better this time,” he pointed out, happy that his toes were still in one piece. Katniss's shoes were much more dangerous this time.

Back inside, Prim began to walk over to a crowd of garish-looking people who were talking about a previous games. The blonde didn't wish to associate with any of the Capitol citizens who weren't Effie or the prep team, but talking to the others at the Ball was a necessary evil. After all, this had been her idea and Prim didn't want to back down before she made an impression on anyone. Earlier in the night, Portia had promised that Prim already had her supporters, people who loved her before they had seen a single thing from her, and the woman had insisted that this was a good thing. Prim found it odd, and was unable to wrap her mind around the concept of support for a total stranger after seeing them one time on a chariot. On top of that, Prim didn't want to become a Capitol sweetheart, she didn't want to have to pretend to like anything that was happening, or any of the people around her who hadn't been there all her life.

As soon as she had been introduced to both Sindy and Daviod, Prim made sure to mask her emotions. These people, horrible as they seemed, could have been the difference between life and death in the arena and the blonde girl didn't want to offend either of them. She did as she was supposed to, shaking hands and smiling at their compliments, even if Daviod did come off a bit strong and slightly slimy. Instinctively, she moved closer to Gale, not wanting to seem to available, or overly friendly. Haymitch's warning from dinner the night before was still in Prim's mind and briefly wondered if Daviod and Sindy were the types of people that the older man had been talking about. Suddenly, she wished that she and Gale had gone over to a different group.

“I'm having the time of my life,” Prim smiled, only lying a little. The Ball was wonderful, but it would have been made infinitely better if she and the other tributes weren't being held prisoner in the Capitol.

Sindy beamed, “the Quarter Quell Ball is always so special. I was your age the last time the Capitol graciously put on something this extravagant.” The woman flipped her black hair and sighed happily as she plucked a drink from one of the passing trays. “Do you feel lucky? This has to be so much better than what you're used to back home. I heard that 12 is just...wasting away!”

The comment had been so callous and mocking that Prim had almost walked away. She kept her composure and nodded at Sindy's statements about her home. “It's very different,” she said, looking to Gale to add his two cents in.

By this time, Daviod too had snagged a drink and he sipped it slowly as he looked at Prim. “It must be so much better for you, Primrose. We love Katniss here, but you finally get to stand out like the beautiful flower you were named after.”

She knew what Haymitch had meant, she had just figured she could take some initiative but it hadn't really made much sense she guessed. Katniss gave a quiet shrug and watched Haymitch. He took her hand and led her off toward the small entrance which led further into the garden which to her almost resembled a small maze of green and pink and yellow and red and blue. They knew they'd have tot go back in soon and try to rub elbows with the others. Katniss knew that painful task of pretending to be happy where she was, couldn't be avoided but right now she hoped it could be prolonged a bit longer.

"I think they can wait." Katniss mentioned as she tore her eyes from the scenery and settled her attention back on Haymitch. he moved his hand to her waist and she placed her other hand around him gently. For now she felt like they were entitled to some time alone. The Capitol had stolen enough from her and him. She didn't think it was selfish or wrong for them ot put off going back inside a bit longer. It wasn't like she felt as though they were missing something or doing anything wrong. Katniss wanted to enjoy the night with Haymitch which wouldn't be easy if they kept trying to be perfect for everyone else.

Her dancing partner mentioned she had gotten a bit better from the night before but she didn't think that was saying very much. Katniss smiled at him, "Thanks." She just said and shook her head a little. She could hear the music still but it was slightly more faint now but that didn't matter much. They didn't need music the night before and things had gone pretty good then. Katniss felt safer now, even though she wasn't fond of her attire or the situation at hand, she knew she was safe with Haymitch, who looked gorgeous. Feeling safe wasn't something she normally felt, not back home, not even with Prim because she had always thought that she had to protect her from trouble or outside sources.

It was hard to get used but with Haymitch, it at least felt natural and assuring.

"You're probably the only person I'd want to dance with." She commented, picturing some other guy asking her to dance. That didn't interest her, even if she was supposed to be inviting and nice to people tonight.

The pair were strange and it seemed the others around them weren't much better as they all laughed at Sindy's comment about how their home was. It made Gale's stomach twist in anger. District 12 wasn't perfect and though it may be wasting away, he saw it as strong and far better than the Capitol. The people back home were honest and hard-working and knew the value of someone's worth went far beyond that of outward appearances. Gale had to contain his anger and thankfully the next comment was enough to distract the man from making a snippy comment. Now he could see why Johanna could lose her cool and he hoped wherever Katniss was, she wasn't dealing with the same bullshit they were.

"Oh yes..." He tried to add to the conversation. "It's uh-" He was cut off when the man then moved his sights towards Prim and it made Gale feel even more uncomfortable. Gale bit the inside of his mouth and looked from the man to his date, trying not to read too much into it. He wasn't really threatened or jealous but he was surely concerned as well as troubled. "Yes, Prim is pretty special and we're glad others see that. She's a fighter, everyone back home is." He couldn't help but add.

"Of course dear boy." Daviod grinned. "I am sure she'll do well in the Games. I bet someone of your size must be very nimble and flexible."

Okay Gale had heard enough now, the creep-o-meter was reaching its limit by now.

"If you'll excuse us, we should get going, so many...wonderful people to meet and chat with..." Gale tried to say without his mask falling. He really didn't like the vibe he was getting and he could tell Prim was getting just as uncomfortable as he was.

"Oh, why don't you and I go off and get better acquainted, Gale! Daviod, you and Prim should go too-"

"No no uh no thank you Sindy." Gale coughed, not at all interested in either of those prospects. He wasn't sure what would happen but he didn't want either him or Prim to find out. Whatever Haymitch had been trying to warn them about, Gale was pretty sure this qualified as one of those weird instances. "Good night." He flashed a wave and headed off with Prim, trying not to flee too quickly. "That was...really...weird." Gale whispered to Prim. He would have liked to give him some kind comfort to Prim but that may have to wait. He leaned down and let his hand trail down her arm before he laced their hands together, fingers entwining. That would have to do for now. "Maybe the next group won't be so creepy." He hoped though his optimism and happiness were quickly fading and he'd prefer the moment with him and Prim at the table.

As opposed to that interaction that just had. It was good that they were being well received but he wasn't getting the best vibes from anyone. He wondered where the others were. He didn't like the way Daviod was eyeing Prim and he hoped that there were better people around but he had his doubts.

There was only so long that they could stay outside, and Haymitch knew that. One thing about the Capitol citizens was that they loved Katniss, and a lot of the guests at the Ball had contributed generously just to be around her for a few hours, and she was barely participating thanks to him. With the other Victors around, the demand for just one was down and many of the people who had come to attend the Ball were busily crowding around Finnick, wanting whatever pieces of him remained. Everyone in the Capitol had their favorites, even Haymitch had a fanclub of now middle-aged women, but that didn't make him feel any better about going back inside and mingling. Above all else, Haymitch had never wanted this type of life for Katniss, he had wanted her to go back home, enjoy herself and forget that the Games had ever happened. Even after she won, Haymitch unfortunately knew that would never be possible.

The quiet moments together was something that Haymitch would always remember. Katniss seemed more relaxed with him, especially after the previous night, and it was comforting to know that she felt safe with him. In a place where almost everyone was out to get her, Haymitch was happy to know that Katniss trusted him, that she felt safe with him. Everything would turn out fine if they just stuck together, and Haymitch would have to remember that when going into the arena, because now he had something new to fight for.

“You're going to disappoint a lot of people with that kind of talk,” he said, smirking softly at her words. Truthfully, Katniss was the only person that Haymitch wanted to dance with as well. He knew that when they got back inside that he would have to go a few rounds on the dancefloor with women he didn't like, women who had no substance to them and were just as transparent as some of their outfits—women who would make him wish that he was still outside in the garden and dancing with Katniss. Haymitch really did care for her, and although he wasn't the best at conveying that sort of sappy thing, he hoped that the girl in his arms understood.

Just for kicks, Haymitch spun her around and gave a half-hearted glance around the garden before giving Katniss a kiss once she came back to him. They were mostly alone, and the ones who were also out there with them were either too drunk to pay attention to their surroundings, or they simply weren't interested. “You're the only person I want to dance with tonight,” he said, wanting to assure her that they were on the same page.

Inside, Prim was ready to leave. Maybe if she and Gale had gone over to a different group, or if the people who lived in the Capitol were of better quality, but the blonde girl was feeling very uncomfortable with both Sindy and Daviod. The pair looked as though they wanted to eat her and Gale and Prim didn't want sponsors if it meant enduring more time with them. Sindy had already insulted District 12 and the way Daviod talked about her being nimble and flexible sent a chill down her spine; it was a bit much for a first interaction by anyone's standards, but Prim was hardly used to being looked at like a piece of meat.

Thankfully, Gale had the right idea and Prim was ready to follow him anywhere as long as it was away from these two. As they attempted to leave, Sindy suggested they split up and get better acquainted and Prim fought back a disgusted laugh. These people had to like them, and that wouldn't happen if Prim told Daviod that he was the last person she wished to know, or pointed out that Sinday was much too old for Gale and he wasn't interested. “Goodnight, nice meeting you,” she said before she and her date disappeared from view among the crowd.

“More like terrible and humiliating,” Prim agreed, her mood lightening as Gale's hand found her own. She smiled and gave his hand a squeeze, blue eyes looking out for anyone expressing interest in them, when she saw no one, she quickly pressed a kiss to Gale's cheek; the tall shoes had come in handy. It was the most she could do for now when they were in such a public place. “I guess we should find someone new,” she sighed, not really feeling up for it, but if the Ball were meant for fun, they wouldn't have been forced to go.

Without much scrutiny, Prim lead the way over to another group of people. A man and a woman, who seemed to be around Effie's age, were dressed in match purple tones from head to toe, looking alien even by Capitol standards. Prim hoped they were less strange than the last two they had just talked to. “Excuse me,” she said with a smile, which she received in return from their plastic-like faces. “We're from District 12, we thought we could introduce ourselves. I'm Primrose Everdeen and this is--”

“Gale Hawthorne!” The man grinned and clasped his hands together excitedly. “We loved you! Absolutely loved you at the parade. You're so chic,” he winked, largely ignoring Prim.

Yet another song had played through and Haymitch knew that he and Katniss had wasted enough time avoiding the Ball. “We should go inside,” he broke the news gently, whispering into Katniss's ear as his arms remained around her. Even though the night was early, they could soon make an excuse the leave. There was training in the morning, and tributes who stayed out all night were sure to suffer for it the next day—or rather, Haymitch just didn't want to be there anymore. He was sure that Katniss didn't either, but there was mandatory mingling to do, or else sponsors were at risk of thinking they were rude. Less money for 12 meant a harder seven days in the arena.

Neither her nor Haymitch were ones for sweet talk or sappy romantic displays of affection but it certainly didn't hurt to remind the other that they cared. And Katniss wanted to make sure Haymitch didn't forget that, even if it wasn't the easiest thing for her to let down her guard. But with Haymitch it was definitely easier than most things and actually felt good. Shaking her head, she didn't think anyone else would have the balls to ask her for a dance. "I doubt it." She just to him, a bit amused at the thought of someone actually being disappointed with her lack of interest in dancing. If anyone at the Ball knew her, which was no one, they'd knew not to bother asking her for a dance. It seemed the only guy to not get the message was the exception to the rule. And that suited her just fine. Plus she liked dancing with Haymitch because it meant being close and stepping a bit further away from reality.

He then spun her around and once she was back to facing him, she felt lips against hers for a moment. That was another great perk about dancing and she would take all the positive reinforcement he offered. She grinned and moved her arms around his shoulders now, "You better not dance with anyone else." She couldn't help but protest even when he assured her he felt the same way. Katniss was sure she was the jealous type but that likely stemmed from her loyalty and protectiveness which she couldn't really change easily. When she cared about someone like Peeta, Cinna, Gale, and even Effie, Katniss would do anything to keep them safe and keep them close, because the closer they were, the easier she could actually keep them safe. Of course that was a hard thing to illustrate with the walls crap she built up around her as a means to make sure she didn't end up getting hurt or betrayed.

But now that she had found some honest solace in getting close to Haymitch, those walls were quick to crumble because she wasn't different from anyone else. She wanted to love someone and be loved in return. Even Katniss knew that couldn't happen unless she stopped being so bitchy. His arms slipped around her and she rested her chin on his shoulder, quiet happy where she was. She knew Haymitch had walls of his own and that due to his past, he wasn't eager to get hurt again or watch people leave him prematurely. So she knew that this was as much promising progress for her, as it was for him. As the music changed again, Haymitch said they should be going inside now. She really didn't want to move but she knew he was right. "Yeah...guess we can't put it off any longer." Katniss slowly pulled back and looked around them, no one was paying them any mind but that would all change now. Hopefully she could smile and get done quick enough to earn an early departure from the Ball.

He loved Prim and didn't feel right with putting them in some strange situation. He assumed most people at the Capitol wanted to talk to them about the Games but he hadn't expected the tone of the conversation, as well as the topic, to be so weird. He was pretty sure those two had been hitting on them but he really wanted to chalk it up to something else. Maybe they were drunk and just being overly friendly? When he felt Prim's lips touch his cheek, he quickly looked to her, his worries evaporating. Returning what she had done, he gave her hand a small squeeze. Gale wished he could kiss her the way she ought to be kissed but right now their circumstances couldn't permit that and he wondered how much longer they would need to strut around the room, trying not to gag when it came to making shallow pleasantries.

"Maybe the next group won't be so strange." He tried to assure her, trying to also keep positive about everything. Gale hoped that their next interaction was more relaxed and not too friendly. This time he let Prim guide them and they found a pair of purple people. He was now having second thoughts and gave a quick glance to the woman by his side. Purple wasn't so bad right? Prim began to introduce them but was cut off by the man who seemed pretty excited to see him which was a surprise. He would have thought Prim would have been the object of his happiness. Gale chuckled nervously and used his other hand which wasn't still linked with Prim's, to rub his neck. What did chic mean? He wasn't really sure and had to assume that the man was paying him a compliment. "Thank you." Gale smiled, not too creeped out like he had been a few minutes ago with Sindy and Daviod. "The parade was a lot of fun but I'd say this tops that." He replied, doing his best to be cordial.

Looking to Prim, he tried to keep her included since in his mind, she was more appealing than he was. "Prim and I have been enjoying the food and music a lot." He said and glanced back to the duo in front of them. The male glanced to his female companion and let out a small noise of amusement but Gale wasn't sure how to read it. It didn't seem rude or contrived but it still seemed questionable.

"Wonderful." The man replied, his eyes still lingering on Gale. "Someone such as yourself deserves to enjoy life's many pleasures." He said. Gale rose a brow, pretty sure he was being hit on, which made him smile a little. Mostly out of awkward bemusement. His thumb rubbed against the back of Prim's hand as he tried to figure out what to say to that. He actually had no idea how to reply to the man. It was flattering but at the same time it was unnecessary since Gale was already taken, happily at that. "Rest assured I will do whatever I can to keep you safe. Comfortable? We shall see." The man continued to say, eyes sparkling. Gale bit his lower lip and offered him a small smile. He had Prim but knew this networking would do them all some good. Whatever Peeta's plan entailed, he needed to have plenty of sponsors at his disposal so that the plan had everything it needed. He then finally acknowledged Prim properly. "You two best keep each other safe, you never know what goes on in the dark when no one is looking."

"Yes, we will." Gale finally found something to respond to. "Thank you..." He licked his lips, wondering if it was time to go or not. "I didn't catch your names actually." He then realized, hoping to maintain the good impression the two seemed to associate with him with.

Walking back into the brightly lit room, Katniss felt tempted to go get something to eat but told herself that could wait since she needed to go chit chat with people she hated, while pretending to love everything about the Capitol. She just hoped the topic of Peeta didn't come up but she was sure it would. She and Peeta had already talked about what she was going to say during the interview but right now, that was the furthest thing from her mind. She glanced around and saw Haymitch sticking close by. She had wondered if he was going to stick by her side as they had to make their rounds. She had assumed so but she felt better to know that he actually was. And it also forced to be be on her best behavior, or something close to it. She spotted Gale and Prim on the other side talking though it wasn't easy through the sea of people dancing and walking around. That gave her more relief as she turned to Haymitch. "Let's get this over with." She muttered, figuring Effie and Peeta were also off trying to show the best side of District 12. Katniss knew she had to contribute if she wanted to keep everyone alive.

Somehow.

Something rather obvious told Prim that the next group of people, and possibly the one after that, wouldn't be any less terrible than the last. The blonde girl was happy to be away from Sindy and Daviod and hoped that she and Gale wouldn't run into them again that night. Whatever Haymitch had warned them about, Prim was pretty sure those two personified the dangers of the Capitol. Prim didn't want to find out what the pair had been after, but she had a feeling that it would have been just as trauma-inducing as being thrown into the Games unexpectedly. Back home, the only predators that anyone had to worry about were animals from the wilds beyond the fence; people took care of one another 12, looked out for each other and it was clear that no one cared for anyone in the Capitol. It made her long for home once more.

As she and Gale moved on, Prim was fine with being ignored and letting Gale have all of the attention. It took her a few moments to realize the purple-clad man was hitting on her boyfriend, and Prim wanted to laugh but managed to hold it in. She was pretty sure that nothing like this had ever happened to Gale before, and the lithe blonde wasn't entirely sure if Gale knew what was going on. If he did, he was handling it flawlessly, which enabled Prim to keep the demure smile on her face. Not to subtle flirtation was preferred to the carnivorous way the last two people had been looking them over.

“Oh, we'll be safe,” Prim promised, more amused with the situation than she should have been. Thanks to Gale and his handsome face, he had more or less secured them to two sponsors and that was something to be quite proud of. The way Katniss and Haymitch talked about the process, it had almost seemed impossible to get anyone to pledge even a cent to a tribute in the arena. Evidently, looks went a long way with the Capitol residents, and while they liked to beautify themselves, they obviously appreciated the more natural, non-surgically enhanced look as well.

The man in purple seemed to perk up when Gale asked his name, and he looked to his equally violet companion before formally introducing himself. “You may call me Amethyst, dear boy,” he said and reached for Gale's hand, which he grasped as though he were saying goodbye to a lover. “And my friend here is Lilas. You can bet that you have our support in these games.”

This was the most elated that Prim had been all week and she didn't bother to hide her smile, although she made sure to look more gracious. Prim gave Gale's free hand another squeeze, trying to communicate how happy she was. Quickly, she gave another look around the ballroom and noticed that both Katniss and Haymitch were once again present and she was relieved to see that no incidents had occurred with either of them. Although Johanna's outburst had been scripted, Prim had been worried that something jarring would happen to Katniss and the older girl didn't need another reason for Snow to hate her.

The atmosphere inside seemed to have lightened some, and most of the partygoers had obviously forgotten about Johanna causing a scene. Haymitch hoped that she was alright, that the Capitol hadn't been too hard on her for what she said. Although he had never trusted them before, the dirty tricks with this Quarter Quell and the way that Prim had been Reaped into the Games had him even more on edge and there was no telling how low Snow would now go for revenge against Katniss, and anyone else who dared to speak out against his regime of evil.

“Just a few and then we can go upstairs,” Haymitch responded, hearing Katniss mutter her distaste for this practice. He didn't revel in it himself, but Haymitch knew that he was still charming when he wanted to be, and there were old sponsors who still loved the boy he had been during the last Quarter Quell. Now that he was sober, he was much more agreeable and likable, which should have earned him more points with his older (and possibly newer) fans. 'It'll be over before you know it,” he added, just for good measure before they broke away from one another. Haymitch didn't want to stick too close to Katniss in case Snow was still keeping an eye on who could hurt her the most.

However, he did stay fairly close to her. His warning to the others wasn't one to be taken lightly and Haymitch had seen and heard of horrible things happening at Capitol functions. Both Finnick and Johanna came to mind, and their unwillingness to cooperate at first, along with the ways in which they had been forced to fall into their new roles. Nothing like that had ever happened to Haymitch, thankfully, but there had been a few close calls. It was the reason that the former Victor no longer accepted drinks from people he didn't know. These days, it was harder to spike flat water than a fancy cocktail.

Moving through the crowd, just a few people between himself and Katniss, Haymitch found one of his most rabid fans—or rather, she had been in her youth. When Haymitch had first met Bea it was his first year being a mentor, and she was a good-looking forty-something who hadn't ruined her face and body with plastic surgery. She was kind, easy to talk to and apparently very lonely. Nothing had ever happened, but she had always expressed her support for him, and since then, his tributes as well. She was the reason Katniss had gotten medicine for her burns the year before.

“Oh, Haymitch,” Bea said, her voice disappointed and sad. She was dressed in red, her favorite color, and a pair of elbow-length, matching gloves covered her aged hands. The woman's hair was now a dusty shade of grey, but her blue eyes were as sympathetic as ever and Haymitch actually believed that she didn't want him to die. “I can't believe you have to go back.”

“I was as surprised as you were,” Haymitch said honestly. He didn't have to ask her for any money, or to take care of Katniss, Gale and Prim once the Games began, he already knew that she had pledged her support to pitiful District 12. “How have you been?”

For the next few moments, the old friends caught up with one another and Haymitch was truly glad that she was there. Out of all the seedy guests that night, Bea was a cut above them and shouldn't have associated with anyone else in the room. “There's someone I want you to meet,” he finally said and turned to find Katniss in the crowd. It seemed like she had just finished talking to a potential sponsor, and Haymitch hoped that it had gone well for her. “Katniss, come here,” he said, waving her over. Bea seemed thrilled to meet The Girl On Fire. He hoped the two would get along. “This is Bea, she's been a fan of 12 for a long time.”

“Ever since you, Haymitch,” she smiled and extended her hand to Katniss, “but this one reminded me how resilient your district can be. It's a pleasure to finally meet you,” the old woman went on. “I'm sorry it can't be under happier circumstances."

Gale nodded to Amethyst and returned the handshake though its possible undertones failed to connect with the handsome tribute as he soon dropped his hand to his side only after giving the woman a handshake too. "It's nice to meet you both." He said. It was an honest statement. He wasn't too tense when it came to making light idle chit chat with the pair known as Amethyst and Lilas. He let go of Prim's hand and used it to ran hand through his hair, not sure what to say next. He felt as though things had run their course. They had made a somewhat decent, almost good, impression on the two and he felt pretty pleased with himself.

Still he figured he should try and get to know the pair a bit better to help ensure their support was appreciated, as it would be. "So um...what do you do around the Capitol?" He hadn't found much fun beyond the lights so he was needless to say, unimpressed but from the look of things, Amethyst and Lilas enjoyed their lush lifestyle in their bustling city of fortune and glamour. It was a bit sickening to think that one place could be doing so well when everyone else was suffering and the Capitol had no one fighting on its behalf for a tireless, pointless tradition which had no real value or use. "We're not allowed to leave so it's hard to imagine." He added, trying not sound too bitter as he pocketed his hands in his pockets.

Lilas looked to her friend and let out a small giggle. "There is so much to do, it's a shame you two can't enjoy the city for all it's worth."

Which was a lot, too much even, in Gale's mind.

"Yes, it's quite the shame that I cannot show you around myself, an eagle such as yourself shouldn't be confined in such a gilded cage." Amethyst sympathized. "I do hope you are still enjoying yourselves though."

Gale glanced to Prim, not sure what to say to any of that. He missed home and he hated pretending to be happy where he was, when some much could go wrong for those he knew and cared about. The plan and Prim were the only things keeping him from snapping like Johanna. He gave a small shrug, trying to still be polite to the two. He knew they couldn't be blamed for the situation which he had willingly walked into. "I have been able to find some enjoyment if I look hard enough." Gale smiled slightly. He knew when he'd be in the middle of the arena, the shared moments with his friends would help push him through whatever hell he may find himself in. Gale was sure any help for their four tributes would be wonderful. "Thank you for your support though, it means a lot to us." He said, his tone warming up a bit more.

Before she could realize it, Haymitch had wandered off and Katniss couldn't really do much except for head off on her own to figure out what she was supposed to do. Interviewing gave her more than enough anxiety but speaking one on one to real people made it almost as daunting as if she had cameras and lights on her. Still, she was sure it wouldn't take long for her to convince people that she was the same person as she was before, even if that was a dirty lie. She saw someone staring at her and she figured she might as well engage them so their eyes would stop bugging her. "Hi." Katniss said and immediately wished she had something else, anything else that didn't make her sound like a child. "I'm Katniss Everdeen from District 12."

Of course they knew that.

"I know exactly who you are!" The female said. She had a pink wig on which had a large hair bow on top of her head. Her eye lashes were also pink and she had on a big white and pink ball gown. "My name is Jenella and I was such a fan last year, I can't wait to see what you do this year!" She exclaimed and reached out to shake Katniss' hand. Jenella had on white lace gloves with the ends cut off to reveal her aqua painted finger nails which almost cut Katniss' hand. Katniss looked down and quickly pulled her arm back. "Oh sorry, I forgot how long I had these down, they make me feel so fierce!" She laughed and held up her two inch nails as if they were claws. "I must say, Katniss, you ended up breaking up things with my boyfriend last year, he was nuts about you." She said.

"Oh...I'm sorry...?" Katniss wasn't sure what to say.

"Oh, I forgive him now, when I saw you with Peeta in that cave, you totally won me over and I wish I had been able to help but now I should be able to give you something." Jenella assured her. "You two were so cute together! I'm really disappointed I won't get to see him in the Games." She admitted and pressed her pink lips together. "I bet you're happy he's not though...I do hope you or your sister make it out, it would break my heart to see either beautiful girl exit before the show was truly over." She reached out and cupped Katniss' face who used all of her will power not to back away or hit Jenella for invading her personal space. "I hope if you are killed, it is a truly beautiful and deserving death. Everyone loves you and no one wants to see you leave us." She said sweetly.

Katniss had heard enough about her own mortality and tried to gather herself but found it hard when she was getting choked up. Now she was torn between crying and yelling but thankfully she heard Haymitch calling out to her. "I won't die, not if I get help." Katniss just said before she headed off to see what Haymitch wanted. She was then introduced to someone who she assumed was a friend of Haymitch's but Katniss wasn't in a talkative mood anymore. She knew she'd probably die but now the thought seemed more heartbreaking since she had someone to lose, someone to leave behind who wasn't blood. "Thanks." Katniss just said, trying to push those grim visions away that depicted her death or someone else's like Prim or Haymitch or Gale.

She shook Bea's hand and then she finally registered what Haymitch had said moments before Bea had spoken. "12 is pretty strong, I'm glad I was able to finally prove that to everyone else." She said. They may not be the best looking or smartest but they worked hard and never gave up, not after all the accidents and harsh winters, 12 was still moving forward however it could. "I'm sure we'll do well this year." She flashed a quick smile though she felt like she needed another drink. "My sister and Gale are wonderful though, you should see the things they do during training, there's no doubt they'll continue to fight the way I did last year." Katniss assured Bea. As much as she didn't want to die, as much as Katniss wanted to fight for the others, Jenella's words ha rattled her as she made it sound as though their lives were something so fleeting and meaningless if it didn't have blood and other effects and music.

"You're so welcome, Gale." Amethyst said and leaned in to give him a hug and kiss on the cheek. "Now off with you before I try and sneak you out of here myself." He said, waving a hand to Prim and Gale.

"Oh, thank you...it was nice to meet you two." Gale looked to Prim and headed off with her, not sure what had really happened but it seemed better than their first attempt. "I guess that wasn't so bad." Gale said to Prim, not sure whether or not Amethyst had indeed been hitting on him or not.

No one could help the life they had been born into or the way that they were raised. It was that knowledge alone that told Prim she couldn't fault the people of the Capitol for being the way were, so callous and oblivious to the plight of others around them. Still, it was hard to imagine a life that wasn't full of hard work and struggle and instead, a plush, jewel-encrusted existence that was presented easily and beautifully upon a silver platter. The blonde girl supposed that she was a bit envious of the passivity of it all, and although she didn't think that her life back home was horrible, it would have been made infinitely better by the constant guarantee of food, shelter and safety. The Capitol citizens didn't realize how good they had it, and Prim didn't think that any non-tribute at the Ball would have survived for five seconds in any district—let alone 12.

As Amethyst spoke highly of all of the things to do around the Capitol, Prim looked to Gale to see if he knew what was happening. She doubted that a man had ever attempted to flirt with him before, as it wasn't a very common thing back home. If Gale did know, then he was handling it well and Prim was much more open to both purple people than she had been to the last pair. Both Amethyst and Lilas seemed truly harmless, much like Effie, simply eccentric and appreciative of the colorful styles and trends that the Capitol had to offer. Prim was happy to have their support once the Games began, and she hoped that she and the rest of her district would continue to impress sponsors.

“I've found a few ways to stay happy,” Prim confirmed with a lofty smile as she looked to Gale. She didn't need to see every crevice of the sprawling Capitol in order to be happy; Gale was enough entertainment. She looked back to Amethyst and Lilas and continued to smile. “And than you so much for your support. We can't thank you enough.” They may have been watching to see the bloodshed, but there was a human quality to them that Prim found sort of endearing.

When Katniss joined himself and Bea, Haymitch noticed that something was off about her. When they had parted ways, the dark-haired girl seemed ready to tackle the task of wooing the sponsors, but from look currently on her face, it wad clear that something had taken the wind from her sails. Haymitch hoped that no one had said anything inappropriate to her, or tried to take her somewhere. However, the former Victor knew Katniss very well and if something had gone wrong physically, there would have been a second incident to go alongside Johanna's. He made a mental note to talk to her about it when they were back upstairs, just to make sure that she was okay. In the meantime, Bea needed to be further impressed.

One year made a world of difference, and Haymitch thought that Katniss was handling the social aspect of the ball quite well. Perhaps she was finally starting to understand how important charm was, or she had simply matured after seeing so much. Either way, Haymitch was proud to stand next to her, and listen to all of the things that she had to say about her district, and her assumed alliance. He wasn't worried anymore, and if Katniss was, she was very good at keeping it to herself. “I was telling Bea about the simulator,” he encouraged, wanting to give Katniss more talking points.

The older woman smiled. “Yes, he said you two make a very good team,” she said. “Although I'm not looking forward to watching him, or you, suffer through another Games. I think what the President has done to you all is just terrible.” She spoke as if her words had no consequences. “But you'll do your best, I'm sure. I know everyone is looking forward to more of your archery, Katniss.”

“She's still amazing,” Haymitch assured his old friend, and he offered Katniss a small, praising smile. Even without his heavy, personal bias, Haymitch still thought that Katniss was the natural choice for Victor. She was the strongest tribute selected, and if President Snow wasn't so against her, he had no doubt that she could win the Games all over again. “I've never seen her miss a shot.”

After saying goodbye to Amethyst and Lilas, Prim laughed softly at Gale's assessment of the situation. “That man has a crush on you,” she pointed out. Although the meeting hadn't been bad by any means, simply a little different from what she was used to. Then again, that had been life since coming to the Capitol. “What should we do now?” she asked before looking around the room. The crowd was still thick and people continued to dance, but Prim spotted both Katniss and Haymitch talking with an older woman and she was happy to see their familiar faces. “Maybe we should meet up with Katniss and Haymitch,” she suggested, thinking it would be a good idea to touch base, or just be friendly in front of others. If anyone was questioning whether or not 12 was united, they wouldn't have to worry.

Cinna and Effie had been the only people she could tolerate from the Capitol, perhaps Caesar Flickerman being a slight exception. It was interesting, rather surprising for Katniss to find someone who didn't have their head crammed up their ass. The compliments felt more sincere and that made Katniss relax a little while trying to put those unsettling words from Jenella behind her. "Thank you..." Katniss said when Bea gave her condolences regarding what Snow was putting her through. The woman didn't seem too worried or under some illusion which was also what allowed the archer to actually laugh a little when Haymitch added some praise of his own.

He was biased though but she knew he still thought highly of her skills, even before their feelings blossomed.

As much as Katniss wanted to make a flirtatious comment, she had to remember she couldn't, as they weren't alone any longer. "I can't afford to break my streak." She said lightly. Katniss wasn't really sure what to say though and she glanced to Haymitch. Bea was easy to talk to but the girl just wasn't sure to say as she was trying to get back into a better mindset. One that would make her more approachable, as Haymitch would stress. "I'm glad there's someone like you on our side." Katniss told the woman. It gave her some hope that she might actually get gifts from sponsors like Bea. She had faith in Peeta's ability to get plenty of support but she knew it also weighed on her and the others' shoulders to not only seem promising but also appealing.

They spoke with Bea for another minute before she excused herself, leaving Haymitch and Katniss alone. Before Katniss could compliment Haymitch on making that interaction more bearable than she assumed but someone else had quickly replaced the spot that Bea had left open. "Good evening, Katniss. Haymitch." He smiled to them. He had brown hair which reminded Katniss of the leaves back home when autumn would change into winter. He had dim green eyes which took her back to the spring where the white and brown scenery would turn into a bright green before summer would take over. By now, her home must be breaking out in wonderful colors of life and hope and she was stuck in Hell. "I've been hoping to speak to you but this is the first time I've seen you available." He said.

"So...you've been watching me?" Katniss laughed a little, though it wasn't because she felt flattered, she was more amused than intrigued or interested.

"How could I not?" He grinned and held out his hand. "My name is Blaze." She shook his hand and he kissed the top of it. Katniss forced herself to smile and pulled her hand back before she put it behind her and wiped it off. Ew gross. :He glanced to Haymitch and flashed him a wide smile too but then looked back to Katniss. "I was hoping I could get a dance with The Girl on Fire, I think we could heat things up a bit in here." He said. Katniss wanted to roll her eyes, he was pretty terrible. "Or if you'd rather, we could go get a drink, get away from the crowd..." He offered and moved to touch her hair but she quickly smacked his head before he could touch her long wavy strand of hair. She was sure she expected to say yes but she was too grossed out to really want to have anything to with Blaze.

"Um...." She glanced to Haymitch. Blaze then mentioned that he'd love to save her from all the danger that awaited her in the upcoming Hunger Games and that the two of them could have some fun together. He even began to mention her skill with the bow and how useful it might be in a non-violent situation. She had heard enough from the moron and stepped forward and reached up, resting her hand around his neck as she softened her expression. "That's very sweet of you, Blaze." She said sweetly and reached down and pressed her fingers into the muscles around his collar bone and used her other hand to reach around his neck, putting a good amount of pressure on those two points which quickly brought him to his knees. "Actually no, I meant to say disgusting, I'm guessing someone of your personality type doesn't have many friends. Consider yourself very lucky we aren't alone or I'd gauge your eyes out and shove them up your ass now get up and get the fuck out of here before I shove my heel down your throat." She hissed.

Blaze got up and quickly headed off. Thankfully no one had noticed their encounter and Katniss had managed to hold down any urge to vomit. "Can we go now?" She turned to Haymitch, thoroughly disgusted and annoyed. At least the words from Jenella weren't bothering her. The only guy she wanted being a pervert was Haymitch. ANd if Haymitch hadn’t been around, and if there had been less witnesses, she would have done a lot more damage to the creep.

Gale was surprised to hear Amethyst had a crush on him.

"Really?" That explained things. It didn't really bug him, it was kind of nice actually. "I don't know." He shrugged and thought about what else they could do now. Should they meet and greet some others? Though they hadn't done much, Gale felt as though they did. It would be impossible for them to meet everyone at the Ball. He looked to where Prim was looking and saw Haymitch and Katniss say goodbye to the older woman. He was also pleased to see them also mingling. He wasn't sure how much Katniss could stand but if Haymitch was around, he was sure things wouldn't get too old of hand. "I think we should leave them alone." He said.

He didn't feel up to dealing with Katniss who was probably going to be watching his every move around Primrose. He wanted to enjoy the night for what it was without dealing with the drama their relationship had created. "Oh look, dessert." Gale said and pointed to a table which he hadn't seen before. He figured the food had been taken away to make room for more special sweet treats. He wondered if Peeta had seen them. He put an arm around Prim and walked over to where the set up was. They saw a large collection of chocolate covered fruit, cookies, small tarts and other pastries. "How about we make a plate and head outside for some fresh air?" He proposed.

Gale then began to pick out a variety of things, some chocolate covered strawberries and oranges, he picked out some fruit custard tarts and some other small delights. He looked to Prim to see if she wanted him to add anything to the plate. When they were both satisfied with everything, he carried the plate and headed outside with Primrose. He looked around and was pleased with the lack of bodied outside. Many people were inside for whatever reason but that gave the pair some time where they weren't being watched by strangers. "I think we can find someplace over here." He mentioned and walked over to the entrance to the garden. It had tall green shrubs and flowers everywhere. There were small dim lights coming from the plants which created a pretty romantic settings for the pair.

"A bench." A place to rest their feet would be good and he had a feeling Prim wanted to take a load off her poor feet. He couldn't imagine what heels were like and he was in no way going to suggest ever trying them on to see what they were like either. He sat down and set the plate of sweet snacks between them and removed his outer blazer, not sure if he should give it to Prim. Was she cold? He didn't know so he set it down on the grass under the bench so if either needed it, it would be there.

Picking up a chocolate covered strawberry, he took a bite and then another to quickly make sure he wouldn't make a mess. Though he didn't care much for the clothes he had on, he didn't want to make a mess and cause Effie or a stylist to make a fuss. "I don't think we'll get to have peace and quite like this for a while." They had only a few more days until the Games began. They had training, Peeta's party, the interviews and then that would be it and he couldn't afford to lose sight of what could happen, what good things could happen. "When we're out of the arena, we'll get to have all the quiet days we could want." At least he hoped that was the case.

He picked up a blueberry tart and took a bite. "Mmm...I'm gonna miss the food though." He said.

It was a small thing to miss but compared to the food back home, he could admit the food was much better and he wondered if somehow down the line, he could try and cook with Prim and recreate the gems from the Capitol. A home with Prim..that was a comforting thought.

Most of the time, Haymitch wasn't the type of person to involve himself in social situations, but the ball was different. He knew how important it was, but he also knew that Katniss was very much like him when it came to solitude. He was just glad that she seemed to like Bea, and that Bea liked her as well. She was a critical sponsor for them, and although Haymitch didn't think that the older woman would withdraw her support all of the sudden, it was best to make sure of that. They would only have to endure seven days in the arena, but that was a long time when both the nights and days were filled with careers who wanted to get home, and who wanted the alleged glory for themselves. On top of that, there was the actual arena to worry about—Haymitch didn't trust the Capitol to go easy on them, and he was fully expecting something worse than the last Quarter Quell.

Before Haymitch could say anything to Katniss about how well it had gone with Bea, they were interrupted by a smooth voice from a man who seemed intent on something. The former Victor was used to people knowing his name and acting like he was an old friend, but this man's target was clearly Katniss. For the first time all night, Haymitch felt a twinge of jealousy. Realistically, he knew that Katniss didn't want anything to do with the other, more handsome man, but that didn't stop him from hating the way Blaze looked at her, and touched her. At the very least, Haymitch knew that Katniss wasn't the type to be kissed by strangers, and he was sure that her patience would quickly wear thin.

As she looked to him, Haymitch shook his head. Blaze wasn't someone who had ever given to 12 before, so in his mind, Katniss didn't have to be nice to him if she didn't want to. He ran a hand over his chin, feeling the stubble there as he continued to watch the scene unfold before him. “She doesn't want to go anywhere with you,” Haymitch said, almost as a warning, but he knew what Blaze meant and Katniss was better than what had happened to so many other Victors. Of course, Katniss was very capable of taking care of herself, and Haymitch didn't bother to conceal a laugh as she put this creep in his place—it looked like it hurt, too.

“Let's go,” he smirked as Blaze scurried off. Haymitch was more than ready to leave, and seeing Katniss that way, in that dress seemed like a good enough ending for him. Quickly, he lead her out of the ballroom before Effie could find them and scold them. Out in the halls, there were no Capitol officials to escort them back to where they were staying, and Haymitch didn't have a problem walking. “I know you're mad, but you shouldn't let him get to you,” he said to Katniss as they headed back. “He's not going to be the last slimy guy to hit on you.” It wasn't much of a pep talk, but Haymitch was just stating facts. There was no point to getting angry at every person with no manners.

“It was pretty funny, though,” he added as they arrived at the elevator. Haymitch pressed the button and waited for the carriage to arrive. He rocked back on his heels as he looked at her, hoping she would be in a better mood by the time they got back upstairs. “Among other things...” but that hardly seemed appropriate if Katniss was upset.

Since Prim had been spending so much more time with Gale, it made sense that Katniss was hanging out with Haymitch. Although the blonde had noticed, even before the Quarter Quell announcement that the two had become much closer since the Victory tour, and very briefly, Prim wondered if something was going on. She was the way they stole glances at each other, but the idea of Haymitch having a crush, especially on Katniss, was as foreign as Katniss returning those hypothetical feelings. Prim never knew Katniss to have a boyfriend until Peeta, and that had been an act—it was hard to think about her older sister being romantic with anyone. Maybe, she thought, she would ask Gale about it later.

“If you're sure,” she said and took her eyes off of Katniss and Haymitch. They seemed to be having a good time together anyway. Dessert did look tempting, and Prim agreed to getting a bit of fresh air and enjoying some more of the food that Capitol had set out. Most of the more savory treats had been taken away to make room for many desserts, and Prim thought that the ball was beginning to wind down. The night really had flown by, but it was refreshing to get outside and have a moment to breathe. Inside, Prim felt as though everyone had been looking at her, judging her and possibly comparing her to Katniss. She knew damn well that the other tributes had been sizing her up, which meant she would have to work harder at training the next day.

Pushing all of those thoughts from her mind, Prim took a seat on the bench with Gale and breathed a heavy sigh. “I think I'll miss our old lives,” she said, having to agree with Gale that peace would become something of a distant memory very soon. Regardless of what happened in the arena, if Peeta's plan worked or not, everything was going to change and the blonde girl really would miss the simple life she'd had before the Games. Thoughtfully, she took one of the chocolate-covered strawberries and licked her lips after finishing it off, not wanting to get any juice on her dress.

Turning toward Gale, she smiled. “I could make these,” she said, nodding to the strawberries on the plate. “If 12 ever got some chocolate,” she laughed, “how hard could it be?” Next, she picked up one of the oranges and offered Gale a bite. With him, her worries melted away, and all she wanted to do was spend all the time she could with him before the Games started.

Admittedly, it had felt good to get some of her frustrations out. And Katniss didn't pity Blaze so much for being the target of her aggression. If anything, he should be thanking her that she had held back. She could have done much worse to that creep but she didn't because there were too many people around expecting too much from someone who thought everything was pointless about the evening. It's only saving grace was that she got to see Haymitch and Gale dressed up. As they headed out, Haymitch made a comment that didn't get her much reassurance that the creeps would cease to flutter around her. She knew there might be more like him but it certainly wasn't comforting. But then again, she didn't really need a comforting lie nor had she been expecting one. Katniss could in truth, consider herself lucky that the whole evening hadn't been filled with jerks like Blaze trying to get close to her because if that had been how the night had gone, she was sure she would have caused as much of a ruckus as Johanna had done.

Upon arriving at the elevator, she glanced to Haymitch quizzically, as he said it had been kind of funny. Yeah maybe to him but it was weird as fuck for her. Clearly the attention wasn't welcomed and just made her want to vomit or throw Blaze across the room. Since neither of those things happened, she supposed the night could still be considered somewhat successful even if its ending wasn't as enjoyable as the beginning had been. When the elevator glided down and arrived for them, he also added another comment which caused her to frowned a little, at first unable to follow what he had meant by that. It was funny among other things? Like what? She had to think about what had happened and after reminding herself, she had an idea of what he had meant by that. It was possible that maybe her own actions had caught Haymitch's eye in a manner far different than just amusement.

Which in turn, amused her.

Of course it was likely that Katniss could be wrong in her assumption since her experience was abysmally, but understandably, lacking. "Really?" She commented as they stepped onto the elevator and were taken up toward their correct floor. "What else?" Katniss asked, placing a hand on her hip as she realized they were actually alone. There weren't any stupid guys lurking around, drunks or spies working under the command of President Snow. So now both of them were alone and Katniss finally felt like she'd be able to relax and put the Ball behind her. It was done and over with but a part of her wished it didn't have to end too abruptly. If it was over, it just brought everyone closer to the carnage waiting for them. Even though the Ball was ridiculous, it still stopped time from slipping way and if time could just slow down, then there was more time to live rather than escape death. Whatever Jenella and Blaze had to say didn't really matter, not anymore. The only person she needed to listen to was Haymitch. When the doors opened to let them out, she smirked a little and stepped out and turned back to Haymitch. "I could guess..." She hummed, mind slipping back to the present. “Or you could give me a hint.”

It was good that the two of them were able to miss things about the Capitol, not just the tranquility around them. They had training which kept them busy and focused and they also had the plan thanks to Peeta and everyone else. But still, Gale was thankful that they could take some time to reflect on what they would miss when things did change. For him, it helped keep things rooted. While he wasn't a fan of the Capitol or its residents or even its blissful ignorance of the world around them, Gale could admit that some of their perks would be sorely missed. It was small things such as the food and comforts. But then again, wherever he and Prim wound up, he was sure he wouldn't ever have to complain about the company. Her's was always welcomed. He finished his tart in his second bite and was sure to dust off any of the buttery crumbs off of him. Even though they had been granted more privacy and no one was paying them mind, he still wanted to look good.

"Oh?" He looked to Prim.

He wasn't doubting her capabilities of cooking and baking. She had made some great strides after they had moved into the Victor's Village. Gale was a bit jealous of the kitchen and all the goods and tools that came with it. Of course that all came at a big price, one they'd never stop paying for. It cost Katniss her mental stability among other things. Gale sometimes felt bad for being so envious of the Everdeen family when he knew how much torment the women had to endure and he hoped he could help keep Prim sane when everything blew up in their faces. Plan or no plan, he didn't want Katniss to turn into Haymitch, nor did he want Prim to turn into Katniss. All of them deserved to be happy and to come out with as little damage as possible. Of course that was a very unrealistic mindset to have, even for Gale. He smiled at Prim and nodded. "I mean, I'm sure you could. I could even try to help." He offered her. The idea that they could be back in the 12'th District was a bit out of reach and fuzzy to even imagine but he knew they all had loved ones waiting for them to come back, wishing for the impossible.

"I know I'm a bit clumsy in the kitchen but I'm sure you'd be able to help me...help you...which I guess defeats the purpose of me trying to help." Now he was rambling, something that wasn't like him at all. Prim made him act strange and feel strange but he wasn't complaining. Not at all. "Actually never mind, I'll just stay out of your way." He laughed and rubbed his neck slightly. The air was warm but not suffocating in the least. His smile dropped a little as he felt a delicate, nagging tug at his heart and he figured he could try and get serious for a moment. "You know Prim," He started to say. "I do see us...together..when this is all over." It was a big thing to admit and he hoped she felt the same way about their future. Discussing it wasn't easy, not with so much on the line, along with the uncertainty of escape and living a full life. "I mean..." He dropped his hand to rest in his lap now. "You know just us...together." He tried to be more specific. He cared about her mother and sister of course. and his own family but he just saw Prim and himself in a house, on their own, quite happy.

Their time at the Ball had only lasted for a few hours, but Haymitch was drained from the experience. Although he hadn't been acting like it, the stress of having to go back into the arena had been getting to him, and the thought of having to survive until the bitter end once more was intimidating. Haymitch didn't want to admit it, and he wouldn't have if anyone asked him, but he was scared. Having to endure the Ball, and act correctly in front of sponsors had been pressure that the older man didn't need. Now that it was over, Haymitch was ready to decompress for the night and take a moment to breathe before training started all over again in the morning.

When the elevator arrived, Haymitch stepped into it with Katniss and leaned back against the glass. He had made the trip up and down the building many times over the years, but this was one of the only times that he had been almost completely alone, and with someone he actually liked. “What else do you think?” Haymitch replied, chuckling as he ran a hand through his hair. He couldn't help the way he felt about Katniss, or that strong-willed women happened to be something he gravitated toward, but he also knew that she lacked any kind of experience. Haymitch didn't want Katniss to think that he only wanted her for one thing, and it was the truth; he really did care about her.

As the elevator came to a stop at the top floor, Haymitch stepped out and into the suite behind Katniss. It was completely empty, even void of the Avoxes, who were more than likely assisting with the ball. “You're smart,” he said, pulling off his jacket and tossing it onto the couch, “take a guess.” Next, he worked the cuff links free from his shirt and rolled the sleeves up, already feeling more like himself. He didn't like feeling trapped in his own clothes, even if the designs that year had been much more flattering than times past. He walked over to the sitting area and sat down on the couch where he'd carelessly thrown his coat, eyes still watching Katniss as he waited for her guess.

Last year, after Katniss had won the games and their family were able to move into the Victor's village, Prim had done her best to hide her enthusiasm for it. Living in the new house was bittersweet and Prim had always felt guilty for enjoying her new bed, or the extra food, or anything that the Capitol had given them. Katniss had sacrificed so much, and there were times when the blonde girl wished that she still lived in the Seam. It seemed so backwards to miss the years of struggle, and those nights when they had gone hungry just because of the guilt that came along with new wealth. That was part of the reason that Prim always invited Gale and his family over for dinners—it was a way to give back. Prim just wished that she could have done something more for Katniss before all of this had happened.

“You've helped me in the kitchen before,” Prim reminded Gale with a small smile. She thought back to one of the first meals that she had cooked on her own, and remembered how Gale had helped her cut up the deer meat. He wasn't as much of a disaster as he thought, even if he did think of himself as a bit clumsy. Prim thought it was sweet that he even thought to help her out, which was more than she could say for some of the other men back home. Most of them worked in the mines and left the housework to their wives. Briefly, she wondered what her life would be like with Gale, and if there was such a thing as a perfect world after everything that was going to happen.

Suddenly, the conversation took on a more serious tone and Prim noticed that Gale was starting to ramble a little. It was unlike him, and Prim wondered if he was nervous about something, or if she had done something wrong. The slight frown that had crossed her expression had soon eased away entirely when Gale spoke again, almost reading her mind. She knew that there was family to think about, and while Prim didn't ever want to leave her mom or Katniss, she did want to have something real and permanent with Gale. “I know what you mean,” she said, reaching for his hand. “It might take a while, but I think it will happen.” Considering what was about to happen within the next two weeks, it was a lofty goal, but also something that Prim was willing to hang onto.

After giving Gale's hand a squeeze, Prim moved scooted closer to him on the bench and moved the plate of desserts out of the way. “I want it to happen,” she clarified, just in case Gale thought otherwise. She loved him, and although she didn't want to say it yet, she hoped that he understood. She leaned in and gave him a kiss, not caring if anyone was around to see them.

( Moving to skype for Haymitch x Katniss. )

It was true, he had helped Prim before but he never felt comfortable in the kitchen or useful. Sure he could kill and skin animals but he figured he could leave the work to Prim who knew how to turn basic things into wonderful thoughtful dishes. That always amazed him but if she thought he was a help then he'd try. When the topic did turn, Gale hoped that Prim would be able to follow his train of thought. He knew he wanted a future with her. The others came along without saying but to him, something ideal would be a home without Katniss and their mother and his family. It wasn't easy to think of something so perfect when they were in the Capitol but they had good cause for hope and he just wished he could pass the same sentiments to Katniss and Haymitch.

When Prim took hold of his hand and expressed similar ideals, he looked up, rather relieved. He knew his words could be taken one of two ways and much to his delight, she had reciprocated them. "Yeah." He didn't want to put a timeline for when things would happen but he knew that if it was in the future, it would make things easier to deal with. They had something to look forward to when it was all over. Seven days would be very difficult. Even Katniss had struggled to make it to the end and they had their work cut out for them with double to enemies and dangers.

Still, Gale knew they'd all make it out.

Prim moved the plate away and in turn moved closer to him which was perfectly fine with him. Gale gave her hand a light squeeze back, finding reassurance in her warmth. It made him remember that their reality wasn't as bad as it seemed. "Good. Maybe we can do a bit better than a cave somewhere." He joked a little and kissed her back. He didn't think it mattered. At this point, many people weren't around or in the right mind to pay them any attention. He pulled back and let go of her hand so he could wrap it around her waist, keeping her close. "You look really pretty tonight, Prim." He said to her.

There was a lot of growing that came with the Games, and everything they brought as well, but Prim was still young and there was a large part of her that couldn't picture her life without her family surrounding her. For a very long time, it had been her, Katniss and their mother together and the idea of abandoning them, just leaving to go somewhere else with Gale, didn't feel right. She wanted to be with him, she wanted a life with him, but she didn't see why they needed to leave their home to have all of that and more. Realistically, now wasn't the time to discuss such things, and Prim (unfortunately) knew that they may never need to talk about it, but that didn't stop her from thinking of the future. Their different ideas weren't enough to make the blonde girl think that Gale wasn't right for her.

Any thoughts of what the future could hold were soon gone when Gale wrapped his arms around her. She always felt so safe with him, as if nothing bad could ever happen when he was with her. It was foolish, even a little childish to want to hide from every bad thing in life, but Prim didn't care. When time was fleeting, she just wanted to be with Gale and be as happy as they could be, together, before the Games came to take them away from each other. She really was worried about everything, even if Peeta had a plan and she did have more faith in herself to stay alive. Seven days was asking a lot in such an unpredictable arena.

“Thank you,” she said softly, appreciating the compliment. Prim felt more like herself this time than she had at the parade, and that helped to boost her confidence some. “You look amazing,” she added, reaching up to play with his tie again. The color went well with his eyes and helped to bring out every handsome part of Gale. She gave his tie a playful tug and pulled him down for another kiss, “really good,” she smiled against his lips. This was the most alone they had been in quite a while and Prim wanted to take advantage of that for as long as she could.

He wanted his family close by but he wanted his space and independence with someone he cared about.

Of course any details were bound to change in time.

For now he also wanted to enjoy the moment. They wouldn't have too many instances where they would be alone and dressed up. He thought she looked good no matter what she had on and he was also glad that she seemed approving of his own suit. They were indeed, a pair of good looking people in an astonishing place where they appeared to fit in and yet they really did. Gale knew he and Prim did better, much better, when they were far away, cooking over a fire or hunting game. Those days may be behind them but he still had to hold onto the belief that they were also ahead of them and that made the night less bitter and more sweet.

He chuckled softly when Primrose added that he looked really good. He grinned against her lips, pleased with her approval. "Good." He muttered softly and kissed her again before he tightening his hold around her but made sure not to hurt her. It felt like they had been in the Capitol for ages even though it had been a couple of days. A lot had happened since their arrival. Prim and Gale made friends, trained, found their own strengths and weakness and even made some promising allies in hopes of escaping. It all depended on their actions and he was happy to rely on Prim, happy that she didn't see herself as a burden or wallflower. No, she was a wonderful woman who could stand on her own and fight like anyone else.

"I don't think we're gonna get a lot of time to ourselves." He said which meant they had to take advantage of what time they had now. He was sure in the Games, things would be unpredictable, to say the least. So Gale kissed her again, letting it last a bit longer, his hands rubbing her sides softly to make sure she wasn't cold or anything. And he also just wanted to stay close to her. If they were ever separated in the Games, he was sure he wouldn't be able to sleep until he found her. That thought would only drive him crazy so he told himself to just enjoy his time with Prim right now and that the future wasn't something that deserved his attention, not with the stunning blond beside him. He wasn't sure what to say but the silence itself felt natural so he moved one of his hand to trace a small spiral against her bare shoulder blade, enjoying the softness of her skin. "I want to enjoy every second we have." He hoped that didn't sound too sappy but it probably did...which he was okay with, surprisingly.

Now that the ball had come, and was close to going, Prim knew that the time she would have alone with Gale would be limited. There weren't many days of training left, and they were coming up on having to impress the Gamemakers, and then all of Panem on interview night. Prim had never spoken in front of a crowd before, or rather, not one as big as Caesar Flickerman's audience, and she was a bit nervous about it. Interview night also brought the Games that much closer and although Prim knew that she had made a lot of progress and finally felt better about defending herself, what would happen in the arena was uncertain. She had people to protect, and she had to help hold the alliance together while keeping it a secret from Katniss for seven days all while people tried to murder her. It was a lot of pressure, and not something that Prim knew how to prepare for.

Another fear that was starting to cause her a great deal of anxiety was the possibility of being separated from Gale, Katniss and Haymitch once the Games began. While Prim knew that she was capable of taking care of herself, she knew that people always survived longer in groups. If she were to lose Gale, or her sister at the start of the Games, or any other point, the blonde girl doubted that she would be able to think of anything else. Distractions such as that, as Haymitch would have pointed out, could easily cost a tribute their life. Prim didn't want to go out that way, she wanted to see Peeta's plan through to the end and escape with those she loved and cared for.

“I don't either,” Prim agreed. Once they were in the arena, there would be cameras on them at all times and she knew that the Capitol would want to see how the four of them were faring in the arena, especially she and Gale when they both meant so much to Katniss. While there was still time, Prim wanted to spend time with Gale, and make memories that she could hang onto when things got rough. She smiled softly as Gale traced a lazy pattern against her skin and she reached up to wrap her arms around his neck, keeping them close for the time being. “No one's stopping you,” she said, agreeing again. She was happy with Gale and she wanted the moment to last for as long as it possibly could. Prim pressed another kiss to his lips as her fingers played with the hair at the nape of his neck.

“We should go soon, though,” she mentioned, “upstairs...” Mostly because the garden wasn't an ideal place to be so open about their relationship and anyone could have walked by and come across them.

He knew their time was coming to an end tonight, on one hand he was happy but on the others, more heavier hand, he was sad. Prim had been a fantastic date he had hoped their first real outing together had been less weird without so many eyes on them but he was still glad for the time. They both had fun and to his knowledge, the plan was only getting stronger thanks to people like Johanna and Peeta. Prim kissed him once more, something he was never going to get tired of. "No one ever will." He assured the petite woman. He closed his eyes and rested his forehead against hers the way he had done back up in the suite against the wall. Gale really wished he could find a way to bottle up the moments of calm and happiness and save them for when he needed them the most.

All he could do now was try and remember every detail, thought, feeling, sound, taste...everything.

If he was struggling in the arena, he knew he'd be able to remember the times with Prim and that would be enough to push him further, to keep going until they were as far away from the horrors of the Capitol as possible. Her hands in his hair, for instance, were gentle and teasing but he would surely find the affection life saving in a few days. "I know." He said softly and glanced off to check again if anyone was looking. No one was. He flashed the girl a toothless smile before he got up and grabbed his coat and slipped it over her shoulders. Then holding onto the sleeves, he used them to smoothly pull Prim to her feet. In the same movement, his lips kissed the top of her nose softly before he offered his arm to her. Though spring was nearly upon them, the air was still able to take a plunge after sunset.

Part of him even wished he had been able to see a sunset at the Capitol. Even though he hated the place, he knew it had it's own haunting charm and thought the sunset would bring him back home. Unfortunately they were often training when it happened or away from a window to the outside world. He shook the thought away and walked with Prim back inside. There were still a lot of people dancing and drinking but he could only see a handful of Tributes around. Gale kept walking until they got to the elevator. He figured the short trip across the building didn't warrant an escort so they were on their own. "I guess the others went up." He hadn't seen Effie but he thought he saw Peeta with a pink haired girl chatting. He didn't think much of it. How could he think about Peeta with Prim on his arm? "Thank you for being a lovely date." He said to Prim as they waited for the elevator, giving her a mock bow of his head. "It was an honor." Gale joked, though in all honesty, he was really happy to be with her.

He didn't feel this happy around anyone else but her.

And he couldn't help but remind her of that fact as he kissed her cheek, just in case anyone was around. A kiss on the cheek would be seen as harmless, surely.

There was no part of Prim that actually wanted to go back inside, even though it was possible that someone would see her and Gale kissing and not behaving like good tributes. The Penthouse sometimes felt so small and depressing that it was hard to breathe, and although they were still sealed in at the Ball, at least they were outside. The air wasn't as clean in the Capitol, and Prim missed her home, and the way the trees and flowers scented the air this time of year. She wondered how her mother was doing, if anyone was going to take care of her now that everyone she relied on was away. She thought of Gale's mother too, and his siblings and she hoped that they were eating enough, and not too worried yet. If Peeta's plan didn't work, if the Games ended with a new winner, Prim hoped that it was Gale; he deserved to go home.

It was difficult to be happy for too long while in the Capitol. Every time Prim found comfort in something, she was quickly reminded that it would be over soon. In only a few days time, she would find herself in the arena, thrown to the wolves and then the Ball wouldn't matter—the pretty clothes, the luxurious environment, the people she had met—none of it would truly mean anything and Prim found herself wishing that she could run away. Still, she couldn't help but think that none of this would be happening if she had just taken her place when she supposed to the year before.

When Gale agreed that it was time to leave, Prim was ready to get up on her own, but Gale looped his jacket around her and pulled her up instead. She couldn't hold back the small giggle that escaped her lips because that truly was a smooth move. Gale was unbelievably sweet and Prim felt very lucky to be with him. She took hold of his arm and went back inside with him. The Ball was still crowded, and Prim hadn't expected any less, although she didn't see Katniss or Haymitch anywhere, but she did catch a glimpse of Peeta looking very cozy with a pink-haired girl. She smiled, happy that he seemed to be doing okay after the break up between him and Katniss; Prim had been worried about him.

“You're not so bad yourself,” she said, although she did think that Gale had been a fantastic date and when she wasn't worrying about the future, she'd had a wonderful time with him. She smiled when he kissed her cheek and then the elevators doors finally parted. Prim took Gale's hand and pulled him inside, and since they were completely alone now, she kissed him the way she had wanted to in the garden. “Thank you for tonight,” she said once she pulled away, her cheeks a bit pink from being so bold. "You made everything...perfect."
