| ORIGIN & BACKSTORY |Mythic Origins
Long before mortal life began, inter-dimensional beings dwelled within the galaxy, watching over it as they existed outside of time itself. When life began on Earth, these beings became curious and ventured to the new planet, exploring the world contained on its surface. Revealed as immortal gods, these beings became the source of mythology and finding a new found strength through the worship and adoration of mortals, imposed a rule over all of the civilized Earth. However as time went on and the world changed, these gods began to fade from the people's thoughts and eventually they were all but forgotten but in the minds of those who dwelled among the other immortal societies such as the Amazons. Having become too reliant upon the power gained from the worship of mortals, they found themselves weakened and the gods were forced to take on mortal disguises. Eventually they blended into society in order to find new ways to be worshiped. Wealth, and fame seemed to draw great adoration from the mortals and the gods adapted to the new world, managing to renew their strength.
Despite this, many of the gods still returned to their realms at the end of the day and all of their curses and accords remained in effect throughout the centuries. As such the immortal Persephone is only able to leave the underworld for half a year during the spring and summer months. Each year, Persephone would return to her native Greece, basking in the warmth of the summer as the breezes from the Mediterranean washed over her. Every summer, Persephone would find a lover to take as her own all the while free from the clutches of her dominating husband. One particular summer, Persephone possessed the body of Helena Sandsmark after having watched her husband, Alexander from afar and taken a particular fancy to the mortal. Originally approaching Alexander in her own mortal guise as Kory Spiros, Persephone was rejected due to Alexander's devotion to his wife. Wanting to experience such a tender love for herself, Persephone entered into Helena's body and laid with Alexander.
Learning of his wife's fancy with a mortal, Hades became jealous and ventured to the surface in search of Alexander Sandsmark. Realizing what Persephone had done, Hades killed Alexander and took his form as his own. Under the guise of Alexander, Hades laid with Helena whilst Persephone was still occupying her body. While Helena had originally been barren, the possession by Persephone caused her to become fertile, the child which was born from this was in fact infused with Persephone's own godly essence. Likewise, as the womb was fertilized by Hades and the God of the Underworld's powers too were added making the child a Demi-God. Realizing that Hades had tricked her and upon finding the object of her desire dead, Persephone feared that Hades wrath would spread to Helena and their child. Revealing herself to the mortal, Persephone tried to offer her protection but her words fell upon deaf ears as Helena ran, leaving Greece and fleeing for her home back in the United States.
1997 - 2008: Birth of a Legend
Giving birth to her child while living in her New York apartment, Helena named the girl Cassandra in part due to her beauty and in part due to the circumstances leading to her creation. The fact that Cassandra had been conceived due to Helena's former husband refusing a goddess was not lost on the professor of archaeology. Fearing her troubles with the gods were only just beginning, Helena ventured into Greenwich Village where she sought out the mystic Madame Xanadu. Pleading with the mystic, Helena begged her for someway to protect her daughter from Hades. Although she was forbidden to interfere directly, Madame Xanadu was able to point Helena towards Gateway City, where a large museum housed an artifact that would solve their problems. Returning home, Helena packed up their small apartment and quit her teaching job before taking Cassandra as the pair began to make their way across America to the West Coast City.
Whilst Helena and Cassandra made their journey to Gateway City, Persephone once again free from the Underworld for a new year ventured to Olympus, seeking out Zeus to find her daughter. As the ruler of the sky, Zeus looked down on all and was able to find anyone as opposed to Hades from whom the world was hidden. Locating the pair on their course towards Gateway City, Zeus informed Persephone that the Helm of Hades was housed there and while it would make the wearer invisible to the gods, touching it would immediately alert Hades and only one could wear the helmet. Leaving Zeus, Persephone ventured into the depths of Olympus, making her way to the forge of Hephaestus. There she pleaded with the Smith God to create two pendants with the same properties of the Helm of Hades. Obliging the request, Hephaestus sent his Cyclopes assistants to work while warning Persephone that the pendants would only protect those who wore them from the sight of the gods but not any other enemies that Hades may have.
Infiltrating the Gateway City Museum of Antiquities, Persephone created an exhibit with the pendants labeling them as charms worn by ancient Greeks to ward off the gods. In her mortal guise of Kory Spiros, Persephone continued to use her divine power to manipulate the Museum as she took up the roll of a tour guide, waiting for the day Helena would arrive. Once Helena and Cassandra did arrive in Gateway City, Helena rented out a room for the two of them before researching the city to figure out where Madame Xanadu's mystery object would be. Coming across the Gateway City Museum of Antiquities, Helena was shocked to learn that outside of Greece, the Gateway City Museum housed the largest collection of Greek artifacts. Seeing no where else in the city that could possibly house the object she sought, Helena headed for the museum and took a guided tour. In her desperate state, it didn't take much for her to risk stealing the pendants that Persephone had left for her, the Goddess ensuring no alarms sounded nor anyone witnessed Helena taking the items. Following Helena back to her hotel room, Persephone bid her daughter a silent farewell as the pendants were place on the mortals and they disappeared from her sight.
Believing Cassandra to safe for the rest of her life, Persephone returned to the underworld to try and forget the daughter she would never get to know. But word of the daughter of Hades living among mortals spread throughout the supernatural world, and those seeking power of Hades began to scour the Earth in search of the girl. Back in Gateway City however, Helena had decided to stay in Gateway City and managed to land herself a curator job at the Museum while taking several teaching jobs when she had the time. Cassandra meanwhile grew up believing herself to be just an ordinary girl, but between her developing divine nature and troublesome personality, Cassandra seemed to attract trouble wherever she went. By the age of twelve, Cassandra had been through three elementary schools.
2009: Tempting Fate
It was during these pre-teen years that Cassandra began to cause trouble for Helena as she would constantly go off on her own. Her demi-god nature making her very resilient to harm and as such, Cassandra would end up participating in activities that would cause a normal parent to nearly faint for the thought of them. Cliff jumping seemed to be a favourite of Cassandra's, and while it was a normal activity it wasn't until one day when she jumped and landed on the rocks that the activity started to cause trouble. Returning unharmed after having her friend's witness the fall, word spread rapidly around city about the 'indestructible girl.' While Cassie herself brashly confirmed the story to all who asked, many thankfully dismissed it as the work of a child's imagination. That said, not all were so easily convinced as it was during this year also that the likes of Metropolis' Superman and Gotham's Batman came into the public eye. While a few desperate reporters hounded Helena, they eventually relented as she enrolled Cassandra in Holliday School for Girls in hopes of keeping her out of trouble. But Helena had no idea the type of trouble that was truly headed their way, the Ancient Sorceress Tala, a long forged enemy of Hades had heard wind of the Underworld god's daughter and having heard word of this 'indestructible girl', decided to turn her sights on Gateway City as she hoped to exploit Cassandra in a way to manipulate Hades to her will.
2010: 13
A year passed with Cassandra enrolled in Holliday School for Girls and while Helena believed it to be working at first, Cassandra returned home for the summer as rambunctious and rebellious as ever. She had discovered more of her abilities, showing her mother her new found strength as she hoisted whatever she could find above her head only for Helena to panic and tell the girl to put it down before someone saw her. Cassandra couldn't understand her mother's irrational fear considering the praise Superman was receiving everyday for using his own abilities. Eventually, Cassandra's frustration with her mother came to a head and in her fit she tore the pendant that had concealed her from her neck. Helena had always told Cassandra that the pendants were 'best friend' pendants and that the two would always be friends but in her rage Cassandra had no interest in being friends with her mother and threw the pendant into the nearby ocean. From within Pandaemonium, Hades could sense his daughter as Persephone stopped in her tracks while once again wandering the mortal realm, frozen with fear at what might happen next. But Hades was not a threat to his daughter, in the thirteen years that had passed from her birth, Hades had been given time to reflect upon the way his brothers and he had treated their children previously. Realizing this child also was part of Persephone and given how much he loved her, Hades did in fact wish to be a father to this child. Donning his mortal guise Hades left the Underworld and ventured towards Gateway City seeking his daughter.
Elsewhere, Tala could too feel the divine essence of the Demi-God as the ageless Sorceress flew to Gateway City and hunted the girl down. Finding Cassandra alone at the city's docks, she attacked swiftly without explanation and for the first time in her life, Cassandra felt fear. Summoning the strength to fight back, the bold, hot headed girl grabbed at anything at hand, swinging and throwing trying to keep the magical mistress at bay. However it was of no use as she found herself severely outweighed by the eons of magic possessed by Tala. Suddenly however the docks were coated in a thick smoke as the smell of brimstone and sensation of ash filled the air, Tala caught off guard as a bident pierced her torso and she fell to the ground wounded and weakened. Cassandra looked up into the face of her father for the first time as he looked upon his beautiful daughter, pride swelling within his chest as he turned back to Tala, screaming at her to never come near his daughter again. The Sorceress merely sneered and replied that he now had a weakness before disppearing into a portal. Injured and confused, Cassandra fell into an unconscious sleep only to wake a day later in her own bed. Walking out of her room and into the living room, Cassandra heard voices as she rounded the corner to see her mother sitting with a couple. Waving her forward, Helena introduced the couple as Aiden and Kory Spiros, but Cassie wasn't followed by the mortal disguises as she saw Hades and Persephone before her. Calling their bluff, Cassie realized that her mother was no longer wearing her pendant either and she explained to her the true purpose of it. She had removed the pendant in order to summon Persephone to her and the Goddess had gladly obliged in an effort to find Cassandra, however the true surprise came to them both when Hades in fact rescued Cassandra instead of striking her dead. As the conversation went on, Cassandra realized that things were never going to be the same for her. Reaching an agreement with Helena, Persephone and Hades decided that Cassandra would spend each summer in care of the Amazons where she would learn to harness and refine her abilities as well as being taught to defend herself. The rest of the year she would spend with Helena and attend school as normal.
2011-14
The following school year seemed to drag by as Cassandra did her best to keep a low profile. The realization that she was not just the daughter of Alexander and Helena Sandsmark was almost too much to take especially when her true father was the god of the Underworld himself. None the less, trouble and Cassandra seemed to go together like salt and pepper as the girl found herself involved in several fights and suspicions were raised each time she came out unscathed while the rest of the girls were nearly out of commission. Despite all this, Cassandra managed to make it through the year without changing schools and come June was on her way to Themyscira with Hades and Persephone. Introduced to Hippolyta, Cassandra was soon put into the rigid Amazonian daily regime as her training began. Her lack of discipline led Cassandra to constantly butt heads with the other Amazons and soon her trainer passed her off to another. That pattern continued a few times until it seemed as though no Amazon had the patience or want to break the young daughter of Hades.
Feeling rejected and dejected, Cassandra wandered the island aimlessly feeling ashamed that she had exhausted every chance at any training she had. However during her wandering, Cassandra came across a lone Amazon who was viciously attacking a set of training dummies. Watching in awe at her strength and movements, Cassandra approached the Amazon who turned to her and threw a sword towards the girl. Ordering her to pick it up, Cassandra obliged as the other Amazon charged her with her own blade swinging.
