Heres a minor power I'm working on. More details about it to follow!
Faction Name: The Frontier Commonwealth
Government Type: Coalition of various planetary republics,
Population: 6 Billion, composed of species from across the galaxy.
Home Region and Sector: “The Frontier” El Dorado Sector, located on the Cyrsis Subspace lane between the Imperial Grand Duchy of Agamenos and The New Arcturus Republic
Faction Alignment: Neutral to all major powers
Capital System: Freeport
Desc: The Freeport System is a interstellar trade center, home to two billion souls on planet and a half-billion in its orbital facilities and transient starship populations with its central world surrounded by a dozen orbital citystations, orbital industrial and trade platforms, and large amounts of trade. Despite the technological sophistication of Freeport, great swathes of its planets remain unexplored and untapped and still covered in jungles and nature, untouched by pollution or outside interference. The cities of planet Freeport, born out of Imperium-era engine-city terraformers, are mostly concentrated around the equator and the few major mining ops going on-planet. Life is a little rough-hewn and like any other wild frontier, but it still attracts new settlers and immigrants daily because of the potential for rapid growth and expansion going on.
Systems:
Freeport- The center of the Frontier Commonwealth, and its primary trade hub.
Sever- The energy well of the Commonwealth, lightly populated but a critical source of cheap antimatter, hyperium fusion fuel, siderite, and large number of rare elements.
Nordamark- The most habitable of the Frontier systems, with three tier-1 planets (2 earth-like, 1 oceanic). The system is divided between the "Homesteaders" consisting of families, pirates, colonists, private businesses, and various militias versus the "MegaCons" seven major megacorporations that have claimed stake in the system's abundant resources and rare minerals. Conflict between the two sides is common, as is infighting amongst Homesteader factions and Corporate mercinary units over territory and resources. Despite this, there are a number of neutral stations both sides respect, and the war is kept to a low-intensity series of skirmishes involving small mobile force units over key areas despite sabre-rattling.
History:
The Frontier Commonwealth was born out of refugees seeking a safe haven from the collapse of the Galactic Imperium, and later from the changes and tides of government during the rise of the four major stellar powers. People wanting a fresh start, a chance to start over and make things right, to have a future that was brighter than before.
The early years were hard, many of the refugees being ill-prepared for the rigors of building a colony from scratch. It was only until a band of refugees from the Duchy of Agamenos bringing with them three Imperium-era Engine-city terraformers did the Frontier Commonwealth truly begin to take shape. With the engine-formers, cities were built, resources began to be tapped, and a man could find that their only limits were what they set on themselves as the settlers began to form their ideal, individualistic society bound together by a joint trade pact among trading homesteads and factions. Every race, color, creed could coexist in peace, away from the grand conflicts spanning the galaxy.
Then the first of the Motherlodes was found. Beneath the crust of several planets in the El Dorado sector, within the largest asteroids and beneath the oceans, lay some of the greatest deposits of rare and ultrarare minerals the galaxy has ever seen. A tidalwave of wealth suddenly flooded the sector as everyone sought to obtain these resources by any means possible. Thus sparking the Resource Wars in ASY 3,407 when the Frontier Commonwealth was formally created and voted to restrict the operations of foreign economic powers and corporations in its territory.
For over a century, the Frontier was beset by continous on and off conflict with megacorporations from both the major and minor stellar powers, all vying for control of these resources that would certainly tip the balance of the galactic economy with their acquisition. None of the great powers dared intervene, wary of how their neighbors would react to even benevolent intervention into a area all powers desired. But against all odds, a hundred Frontier militias, pirate brigades, mercenary units, freelancer squadrons, and planetary defense forces waged a desperate guerrilla war against the corporations and won. Driving out corporate and political interests to protect their sovereignty as free independent worlds, sending a message to outsiders:
this is our land. Thus the Frontier has been left alone to govern and live in peace. Until the tides of war are beginning to rise again, and the Great Powers now decide it is time to take deeper interest in this sector, uncaring of its inhabitants or their fate.
Perks
* Abundant Rare Resources- The Frontier possesses an abundance of rare minerals such as room-temperature superconductor elements, thanatonium (used for graviton-based warheads and reactors), adamatian (high-grade armor element), siderite, olivium (quantum-computer matrix ingredient), quadrinix, and other ultrarare elements on its planets and asteroid belts. All of them valuable elements used in advanced technology and starships of the Imperium age and the source of much of the Commonwealth's riches.
* This is our land!- The people of the Frontier are very protective of their land and freedom, and don’t take kindly to any outsiders trying to step onto their territory. While they may fight and squabble amongst themselves, the moment outsiders come in, they are quick to rally to together to fight and beat back the foe.
* Strong Leadership- Under pressure, the Commonwealth thrives. With the rise of President Greywind to the Commonwealth Council, Admiral Suvorov's command of the Freeport Marauder-Corps, and the rise of a dozen new leaders and heroes amongst the ranks both high and low, the Frontier have solid leadership in both political and military fields for all their other flaws.
Flaws
* Factionalized- the planets of the Commonwealth are not united, and every planet has its individual nations, homesteads, factions, corporations, pirates, and clans that often fight and oppose eachother whenever there isn’t an immediate unifying threat.
* Giant Target- Between location, resources, and limited centralization, the Frontier is a giant target for its neighbors as a staging point or source of minerals needed to produce Imperium-grade technology and starships.
* Trade Bottleneck- While the Commonwealth nations are willing to trade what they have, they charge high prices and in limited amounts compared to the reserves they have. This is in part due to most mining ops being private concerns that while safely and reliably run, and the FC simply don’t have the same bulk mineral output as large mining corporations nor the greed to over-exploit. While its enough for the Commonwealth’s needs and coffers, outside nations often fume at the fact they need to haggle with a dozen prospectors and claimholders for even bare amounts of rare minerals, which can strain relations badly.
General Military information:
The Frontier Commonwealth retains a decentralized defense force, with each planet retaining its own planetary defense force on its own funding and manpower, backed by officers and special forces from Freeport academies, and from exiles, outcasts, mercenaries, and discharged soldiers from other nations forming mobile force brigades assigned subsectors of the El Dorado sector.
Despite patriotism when at conflict, the Frontier Militias suffer from chronic manpower shortages for even their basic operations and patrols. Thus the militias often hire mercenaries, freelancers, even pirate brigades to shore up their ranks. While their discipline is questionable, their combat utility is definitive, and they are loyal to their contracts. Which are paid in rare elements in Frontier lands.
Combat robotics are also extensively used. While the Frontier does make use of drones and UCAV's, the majority of its combat machines are bonded Task-Intelligence robots, large combat machines paired with drone marshals as fire support and shocktroops. But despite their proliferation, they are not seen as any more expendable than organic troops. Experienced TI's are valuable, and even friends to many.
