Geek is really just a sub-culture of Nerd, so calling a geek a nerd is not necessarily incorrect, but calling a nerd a geek might be. Both share similar traits and interests though, and since nerds are more academically inclined I'd actually say that roleplaying leans more toward nerd than geek.

I say "geek" and "nerd" are synonyms. Mostly because, every time someone tries to explain the differences to me, I get different descriptions of the two. They never line up.

Suffice it to say that all geeks are nerds, but not all nerds are geeks.

I've tried Aches. It works like a chat room, were you enter comands to have your character do something, but it moves too fast to react well.

I've always held it that 'geeks' and 'nerds' both stem from the umbrella term of 'dorks'. One is cool, the other is not.

Geeks are a socially acceptable group of people who are passionate about things that would otherwise be considered dorky things. (It's like they're the cool version of nerds. Hipsters can also fall into this category, depending on their interests.) For instance, a geek can talk about the merits of Stark Trek simply because they enjoy the series. They know the characters and a good portion of their respective backstories, but they acknowledge that it's just a show and it doesn't rule their very existence. They may be passionate about a few subjects, but they also have other interests to balance their personalities out.

Nerds are the awkward/socially inept version of geeks -- they tend to be more academically inclined, introverted, less good looking, etc. They take fandoms to weird and creepy places, which often serves to make those around them (except for other nerds) uncomfortable. For instance, a nerd will talk about Star Trek and they'll have memorized everything about the show right down to taking the time to study and/or map out actual blueprints of the Enterprise... then proceed to argue with people about whether dilithium crystals, if found, would be an adequate power source to make space travel in a Constitution class sized starship actually feasible. They treat the fandom as if it's a real thing, not just something they enjoy. (Which often has the effect of weirding less nerdy people out.)

I played Achaea when I was like 14. This is over a decade ago.

Never seen anything like it?

It's a MUD. And there's a lot of them.

See, this.

This is the reason why I treat the two words as synonyms.

Every time someone tries to tell me the differences, someone else says "no, it's the other way around" or otherwise tries to tweak the definitions. There's no consistent distinction.
