I think it's a regional thing. (Like 'pop' vs. 'soda' -- you ask for certain things in certain places and you'll get the wrong thing.) Being a 'geek' around here is considered somewhat cool. Then you have the geek term being marketed 'ThinkGeek', 'GeekSquad', etc. and, while they're admittedly niche things, they're being viewed as hip/trendy.
