I didn't understand Mello's character, I thought he was going to be more vital than he was.

He was meant to be this emotion heavy character, basically the opposite of Near. But they killed him off in like 7 episodes of the Anime and about 40 minutes in on the compilation movies. (Which didn't include Matt's death, despite me being told it included all deaths.)

There are Live action movies. Basically, in these, they get rid of the second story arc. There are three, the first two are basically the first story arc, but they tweak it a lot. The third one is an amazing movie based off L. I would say more but spoilers.
