I was always a total geek for Thri-Kreen myself. THEY'RE JUST SO AWESOME!

That said, I had a yuan-ti wizard in one game that wound up using subtle mind control spells to basically take over three seperate city states

Hmm... well I'm thinking of a way to say "Humans are complete bastards". Mainly because that would make opposing the system less evil... Though the gang would probably just do it for personal gain, but it comes across as being hero-like, When in reality they're just robbing everything.

You don't need humans to be complete bastards for that, you just need the current system of rule to be complete bastards. We're allowing alien races so obviously they exist, so it could quite easily be some sort of very corrupt galactic council of some manner.

So pretty much there's a big, corrupt Coalition Of Worlds (C.O.W. for short, perhaps? :P) that some of society's less fortunate have taken to preying on. Alrighty, I can work with that!

Oh man, idea, if it IS abbreviated to the C.O.W., then we could call the RP "Space C.O.W.boys" xD
