Where Angels Fear to Tread

A Sandbox High Fantasy RP

Community Revived Edition (Originally Concieved by Primal Conundrum)

Prelude

Eulona is a continent recovering from the ravages of a thousand-year war. Kingdoms and Empires, with power so splendid, have crumbled into dust over the centuries. Graveyards and monuments to fallen warriors outnumber the living; where once mighty cities stood, there are now only moss covered rocks marking their existence. It is a wounded land, full of wounded peoples.

There are no nations these days, just scattered villages and fortified city-states. There is more legend than actual knowledge of the world, most old records having been lost to the indiscriminate flames of war. Even accurate maps are hard to come by- Eulona is a dangerous place, and being a cartographer is a risky occupation.

Now, the races of Eulona are scattered, living under a shroud of sometimes wilful ignorance of the world outside their little area. Exhausted from the thousand years of constant warfare, of the killing, the raping and the pillaging, the peoples of Eulona no longer seek to venture beyond their borders. They are more content to simply fortify what they have, to avoid confrontation, and to build a brighter future for their children.

More systems of magic have been lost to war and senseless destruction than currently survive, though who knows what ancient traditions lay buried in the depths of crumbling ruins from a bygone age? For those who seek it, there is treasure of all sorts to be found in the decrepit corpses of forgotten civilizations, be it wealth, knowledge, or power. In a continent of ruins and graveyards, a courageous adventurer stands to benefit immensely, should ever they stumble upon things once thought lost to the world.

You are one such adventurer, though you know it not in your current predicament. Within the borders of Eblistan, you were about your business as you would be any other day, before you were set upon by the Calpih’s men. Beaten, stripped, tortured and thrown into a dungeon far below Eblistan Citadel’s surface, you are left to wonder at your predicament. Some of you may be political prisoners, or hapless victims of an unfeeling system of law, some of you may be genuine criminals deserving the dark and dank of the cells that now contain you.

One thing that ties everyone together in that depressing machination of shadow and stone, however, is this: you are all sentenced to be executed come sunrise. So it is then, that you have two choices.

Escape and live as a fugitive, or die wallowing in your own filth before the mercy of an executioner’s axe relieves you of your suffering. Another victim of a violent world.

Far off in the dungeon, the heavy clunk of a gate’s mechanism sounds. The guards are coming. For you all.

Rules

    - God modding is compulsory… hahaaha… but no seriously, no God modding as per the usual. God modders will be put to death by a GM-spawned dragon from the fiery depths of some forgotten religion.

    - Decent spelling and grammar required. You don’t need to be a university professor, but we don’t want any one-liner warriors, or people who can’t tell the difference between ‘accept’ and ‘except’. If you are unsure whether you fit our desired criteria, link me to your works elsewhere on the guild. I will let you know in due time.

    - Custom races are accepted, although fantasy vanilla races are the defaults. Elves, Humans, Dwarves, Gnomes, Orcs etc inhabit Eulona, but there is plenty of room for customs. Custom races cannot be sexy vampires or deviant furries. If you are unsure whether or not your planned race falls under “sexy vampire” or “deviant furry”, put forth your proposition in the OOC. All custom races will be liable to my analysis, so that I can ensure we have no 3429ft walking robots or OMG SO POWERFUL ethereal beings blowing up stuff.

    - Eastern themes are allowed, i.e Samuraiesque warriors. However, I have little love for anime teenagers running amok and getting steamy with each other. Eulona is a big place, with many cultures, so I will be lenient here. Can’t stress enough about the ban on anime teenagers though.

    - Fights between players, should they arise, will be decided by the players in question. Where agreement cannot be reached, I will get angry. This is a story, a roleplay, not the chronicles of how awesome your guy/gal is. Characters die in books, and they can die here too. If an impasse is reached, and my scorn is not enough to shift it, I will dice roll the battle. The results will be SET IN STONE AND I WILL MURDER YOU IF YOU GET UPSET.

    - In the event that you graciously accept your character as dead, for whatever reason, I will of course allow you to re-enter the RP as another character. The way in which you re-enter, will be democratically decided in the OOC.

Character Sheet

I'm not aiming for the CS to be too complex, but you're free to add more information if you'd like- just make sure that all the points in the basic layout are present. If you feel like adding a link to theme music to help set the tone of the character, that's totally up to you.

Upon acceptance, your character will be added to the top of the first OOC post with a link to the sheet’s location.

Post your sheets right here, in the OOC.

The Known World

Here is where we will keep the known lore of the world. We’re starting in the dungeons of Eblistan Citadel, and you’ll find the map of Eblistan here. You will also find Eblistan’s history. As the world grows, I will update this section to include new maps and lore. This is all freeform however, and we all share a degree of responsibility and creative license of what the land outside of Eblistan looks like, and contains.

Character Name: Tarwin Redblade

Species: Human

Gender: Male

Noteworthy Abilities / Limitations: Some sword skill and limited fire-based magical abilities. He often combines the two in combat. A few self taught hand to hand techniques as well. Tarwin prefers speed over raw strength, he's also a capable climber and often uses ropes to move around. He wears an eyepatch over his left eye as it was damaged during a bar fight when he was a young man.

Background: Tarwin was born and raised as a nomad child out on the Eblistan plains , his parents were traders and scavengers taking relics and items from ruins then pawning them off to whoever had money to spare. Always on the move and never sticking in the same place for too long, his education was informal and unstructured focusing mainly in economy based mathematics, bartering tips and tricks, hands on searching and exploring ruins as well as many stories about the past, many of which gave conflicting accounts of what happened.

On his 18th birthday he set off from his nomad family, as is tradition, to make his own way and seek his own fortune. He focused on ruins, taking books and artefacts and selling then in the citadel, he has a knack for finding unexplored sections and his career has been fairly lucrative. Over the years he's forged a number of connections in the city, dealers and bankers, he's also had his fair share of fights and drunken brawls.

Appearance: In his late twenties Tarwin has light short blonde hair and a stubbly beard, his eyes are blue though he wears an eyepatch over his left eye. His choice of clothing consists of a leather vest and three quarter length shorts that allow for excellent manoeuvrability while providing some defence, when traveling he tends to wear a poncho or a cloak depending on the climate. Slightly muscular and about the average height of most humans, he is able to blend in quite well when he wants to.

Reason for Detainment: After hearing a rumour about an ancient text that would guide the reader to an old arcane library, Tarwin snuck into a restricted part of Duranar castle's catacombs, he found the text and briefly glanced over it before trying to make his escape and getting captured.

It's great to see an original RP with some creative freedoms. I haven't done one of these in a good while. I'll see what I can crank out.

I know you want basic standards, like no one-liners, but is there a specific minimum of length you want? Or is Casual standards and up alright?

I believe that was the original aim. So long as you can put a couple of paragraphs together, and they don't make my brain bleed reading them, then s'all good.

Character Name: Mundhir Sadek

Species: Human

Gender: Male

Noteworthy Abilities / Limitations:

    - Prince of Eblistan: Mundhir is a Prince of Eblistan, and seventh in line to the throne. With such royalty assigned to his name, he commands a great deal of respect amongst the peoples of Eblistan. Such respect can arouse the most heroic of feats in the lowliest of peasants.

    - Expert Swordsman: Mundhir, like many of his countrymen, is more than adept in the use of the sabre. Being from the Royal House, his training has been lavished somewhat when compared to the average man. He is quick on his feet, and deadly in single combat.

    - Chivalrous: Mundhir does not believe in dishonest combat. He will neither strike a downed opponent, nor strike at them from the shadows. The use of poison is beyond his pallet, and if someone truly must die, he’ll oft give them a chance to defend themselves properly. In his short but colourful career as a commander of men, he has never executed prisoners, or pursued a routed army.

Background: Mundhir is a Prince of Eblistan, and seventh in line to the throne. Growing up in prettied gardens of the royal residences, he was taught life’s finer curriculum, whether it was poetry, art, language, history or lovemaking.

However, this by no means makes Mundhir a weak man. Though only thirty years old, he has experienced the bloody nightmare of war several times. Usually serving at the head of his father’s World Breakers, he is an elite warrior of few equals, and is considered to be of a deadly tactical disposition. Given the chance to command an army, he would no doubt lead Elblistan to reclaim its former glory – if only his status in the Sadek bloodline would permit him

Growing increasingly impatient of serving a father who lacked vision, and brothers that lacked conviction, Mundhir started to look beyond the limitations of his station to serve his peoples.

Starting small, he gathered a few of his loyal soldiers to his cause, and waged an unsanctioned yet effective campaign against the repeated aggression of Eblistan’s neighbours. Outnumbered, he often relied on the use of guerrilla tactics to beat down his enemies; horse riding and archery became the mainstay of his military doctrine, echoing the Prophet Ebli Khan’s stratagem a millennium ago.

Going from strength to strength, Mundhir finally laid the foundations of his enduring legacy. At the head of five hundred of his mamelukes, he was able to rout Prince Thrandel of Nillanor in the ruins of Baalor; securing Eblistan’s eastern border for at least another year against High Elven aggression.

The victory gave him fame, more soldiers and wealth; it also gained him envy. Though he would do well for Eblistan, his brothers, shocked by his resourcefulness and his popularity with the people, saw it fit to have him murdered.

One night, busy planning the logistics of his military endeavours as he often was, Mundhir was set upon by masked assassins. His sabre was nearby, and he was able to defend himself – but sustained a lethal dose of Ice Venom from the tainted blade of his attackers. He succumbed quickly, and the world darkened around him. The last things he could remember, were the irritated curses of his killers.

Appearance:

Mundhir is a handsome man of princely qualities. Though, like the average Eblistani, he stands around 5’7. He has a wiry frame, better suited to the speed of a sabre than the heft of an axe.

Reason for the Arrest: Mundhir’s assassins presume him dead, and have had his “corpse” taken to Eblistan Citadel’s dungeon to rot as a final insult. His father has been told by his traitorous brothers that he died at the hands of a High Elven ambush, out on the frontiers.

Name:
Rin Zeela-Tae (roughly translates to Rin Two-Tails)

Gender: Male Lizard

Age: 23

Race: Reptillian bipedial sapien

Physical Appearance and Species Description

"Are you going to eat that dead bird over there?" -Rin Zeela-Tae

Height: 5' 9" (8' 10" including tail)
Weight: 198 lbs
His scales are tough as iron along his back yet soft and flexible near joints and under his belly. Mostly a faded green from constant sun exposure and a pale yellow-orange under his stomach. The spikes on his back are brittle but sharp and imposing, they also make good makshift fishhooks if he breaks them off (which he usually does... they grow back) His teeth and claws are obviously sharp and show off his carniverous diet regiment. He can run and climb with ease and can often lift 1.5x his bodyweight without much strain and 2x his bodyweight if he really tries.

Equipment:

-Hempen Rope (roughly 20ft) (currently not on him)
-Hempen loincloth which when unfolded doubles as a fishing net
-Bronze decorative collar along with small stones of flint wrapped along it
-Staff (fallen tree branch) doubles as fishing rod and walking stick. (Currently not on him)
-Several small animal skin pouches holding "food", ointments, animal bait, and a nugget sized piece of raw glass (currently not on him)
-Two bracelets, one made of flintstone and another made from iron. One on each hand.

Personality:

Relying more on instinct than intelligence, the knowledge he gained is soley for the purpose of supporting those instincts that have been honed and developed over years past. Trusting his gut before all else. Rin is quick to learn, yet slow to assimilate. If he picked up a revolver he could figure out the basics fairly quickly but would still prefer claws and teeth.

"Rin prefers to do things the way he likes, if He did not like... then Rin does not do them. Simple?"

Goals:

1) Help the others survive in the lands he knows well, for a profit
2) Visit his old kin whom lay in hiding from him
3) Find a good fishing spot

Beliefs:

1) "If its alive, you can probabbly eat it."
2) "Keep away from magical stuff, you will lose your tail."
3) "Do not change nature, keep it simple and easy to read... except for food stalls, add more food stalls."

Background:

Rin is rather scrawny and small in comparison to his other kin. Most other reptillians rarely leave the desert oasis where he originally came from, and even less do more than just lay around on rocks all day getting fat off the dead buzzards and night crawlies. Not saying his kin are fat and lazy, in fact they are a well established migrating colony that never stays in one spot for long. Often passing trade routes and trading what unique items they find out in no-mans land to the townfolk for mundane supplies. They only have one big drawback that Rin could not stand.... THEY WERE BORING! Rin could not take it. Eat, sleep, eat, sleep, trade, eat, sleep. That's it! What a horrible life!.

At the age of 17 Rin ventured away from the camp and made way towards the closest town. Within the same day he almost got killed by a couple of rogue bandits and lost a tail in the process. A traveling hunter found him half dead on the side of the road and dragged his body to his lodge in hopes of skinning him to make some nice boots only to find out he was still breathing. The aggrivated hunter decided to treat him and nurse him back to health until he was able to work off the resources he wasted on him to treat him. Once better the hunter handed Rin a fishing rod and a net and sent him off to catch some fish. The confused lizard took the items and walked in the direction the hunter gestured and soon came by a creek with salmon literally jumping out of the water. Rin all too excited used the pole to vault himself into the creek in which he quickly entangled himself in the net, almost drowning. Hours later the hunter found him by the riverbed unconcious yet again.

After nursing the lizard back to health yet again, the hunter decided to teach the lizard how to work off his growing debt correctly. Teaching him how to cast the net and hook the fish with the rod. Scaling, cooking and salting the fish for storage. Rin loved every minute of it, fishing was something new to him and for a full year all he did was visit the river and fish. He soon stayed with the hunter and payed lodgings as he learned more things from the hunter, taking trips with him to the town to trade furs and various meats and dried fish. Going hunting in the forests with him and learning how to hunt. Before he knew it years passed by and there wasn't a single thing the hunter knew that he didn't. They became good friends and enjoyed each others company as Rin slowly developed his own methods of hunting and fishing while still paying the man rent.

The years flew by and Rin's sense of adventure started up again. Rin left the hunters side promising to come back to repay his debt every now and than. Rin soon ventured out and did his own thing. Not staying in one place for long but still somewhat near the desertlands that he was born in. Vowing that one day he would go back and find his kin to show them all that he has learned.

"Abilities/Limitations"

Racial Traits: Hist Skin- Just like how most lizards can grow back limbs, Rin can heal major wounds over time. (Assuming he does not bleed out or get decapitated) Rin can heal minor cuts and bruises in minutes, major gashes or loss of claws or fingers in hours and an arm, leg or tail in days. This takes much concentration. The drain on his body is only moderate but constant for a long period of time. He cannot fight in this state let alone hardly walk at a regular pace if severely injured.

"Rin is on his third tail already... maybe I should change my name..." -Rin Zeela-Tae

Thermal vision- As do all Reptilians, Rin is able to see the heat given off of objects or people. Rin is well trained in its use and can pickup not only common heat sources but the minor temperature changes given off from old footprints and or dull heat signatures behind walls. *This is not magic, its biological.

"Rin can... see... you... little one." -Rin Zeela-Tae

Resilient scales- Unlike the spongy flesh of humans or fuzzy coats adorned by most beastmen, Rins scales are as tough as iron in some spots yet still as flexible as leather in others. The scales on his back and tail are the hardest, while his belly and limbs are more leathery and flexible.

Known Skills:
Skilled outdoorsman- Rin spends 90% of his day (and night) hunting game, he knows the land better than the spikes on his back. He can read markings of any kind created by nature or man (except magical) and can use natures resources to its fullest potential.

Tracker- An excellent tracker thanks to his innate heat vision and agile frame able to scale trees and rocks with ease, he uses every physical sense to track his prey unnoticed

Claws, teeth and tail- instead of most who prefer a sharp blade or stout arrow, Rin prefers his razor sharp teeth and durable claws. Often running and catching up to all but the fastest prey he finds a quick bite to the back of ones neck is much more reliable than an arrow in his mind. His tail is heavy and often used as a counterweight. The end is adorned with tiny brittle spikes that are mostly cosmetic. (But the enemy doesn't know that)

Spells/Powers: None Rin cannot use magic effectively. If he tries it often blows up in his face.... literally

"Rin knew a great wizard once... we played a game he called GET OUT! Haha he always lost...."

Reason for detainment:

He "accidentally" ate one of the Dukes prized cows.

Character Name: Kareth of Lendria
Species: Human
Gender: Male
Noteworthy Abilities / Limitations:
Warrior:Kareth has been trained from childhood to fight, and is considerably experienced in combat. He is knowledgeable in the use of most weapons, but is most comfortable with Lendrian weapons: Longswords, shortswords, kite shields, lances and spears. He is quite fit and accustomed to manual labor and physical exertion.

Straightforward: Kareth has little patience for the mincing of words, and prefers to dive into the hearts of matters. He dislikes flattery and dishonesty, and will prefer to be honest in all his dealings.

All is fair...: Kareth has learned that in War, nothing is against the rules. Ambush is but a well-proven strategy, poison is just a means to level an uneven playing field, striking a foe while he is down ensures he will never strike you again.

Background: The Kingdom of Lendria is a small Meritocratic-Monarchy City-State that has survived for two main reasons. The first is the assistance of a powerful sorcerer known simply as 'The Wizard.' The second reason lies in the people of Lendria, who are hardy and patriotic. Lendria is beset regularly by the much larger Ceranian Monarchy, and its people are quick to defend their home. Anyone can become a knight through valorous or faithful service in the army. Kareth is one such person.
Kareth was orphaned at a young age by a Ceranian raid, and was taken in by a Lendrian Knight, who raised him in the arts of War. He joined the ranks of the Lendrian Army at 16 and rose through the Ranks to settle at Kinght-Captain. After spending almost two decades at war with Cerania, peace was declared. Kareth knew no other profession other than war, and so became a mercenary, drifting from place to place, fighting for the highest bidder, and making a name for himself. During this time, he earned the nickname “The Crimson Serpent” due to his cunning tactics and ferocity in combat, and because he still wore the crest of Lendria: a red Basilisk. He still wears the crest of Lendria because he is still loyal to his homeland, and if Lendria was threatened by Cerania or any other foe, he would quit his wandering mercenary days and return at a moment's notice.
Appearance:
Reason for Detainment: Kareth has been charged with Banditry and Murder of Royal Guards. The details are that his mercenary company were having trouble finding steady work, and turned to banditry to survive. They attacked a caravan belonging to the Royal Treasury and went their separate ways, but were hunted and either killed or captured for their theft. As far as he knows, or cares, the rest of his comrades are dead.

Declined.

Reasons:

    - We already have an exotic creature that got its name from experimentations, I'm concerned that you've read through the list of existing characters, and become inspired by that one in particular.

    - Questionable writing ability. The holes in your background information, coupled with the way it is written, worries me. You've only been on the guild for a day, and I have no previous works to go off and read. I don't need you to be a flawless writer, as this is casual, and I myself sometimes write like a hapless mudfish - but I need to know you can write things that wont make people cringe.

If you really want in this RP, there's two things you need to do.

1) Find me a post from another RP, so I can quickly make a check. If one doesn't exist, perhaps you have some creative works saved on your computer? Paste me a paragraph or something from one.

2) Give your character more depth. You don't need an essay, but there are some glaring questions. For example: If he was a snake, and was experimented on, does he have the ability to think like a human? Or is he just an oversized serpent with arms? Can he be reasoned with? Hell, can he even speak? Tell me more about him.

OR.

The other players, if they are happy with what they see already, can veto my decision, in which case you'll be accepted. But that's down to them.

It's okay. How long do you need? I can postpone the IC's start for a short time.

On another note, should I close this RP to any more entries? Or we happy to have as many as possible?
