In a secret government laboratory, scientists have been working on a new weapon. This weapon is not something large like an atom bomb, or a missile. No, they are working on a weapon, or rather weapons, that influence the human senses. They hoped to create the super soldier, and they thought that the senses were perfect for the first step. With advanced scientific methods, unknown to the public, the scientists created these weapons in the form of badges/brooches, one for each sense. They have created a large number of prototypes and tested them on willing human participants, and on animal subjects. The prototypes have shown that the technology, when used by the human participant, not only heightens the sense, but it also gives them powers revolving around that sense. Unfortunately, the prototypes turned the human participants into monsters when they were used. Regardless of the danger to the participants, they continued their research, hoping to perfect the power they had so that the bearers wouldn't turn into monsters.
After making prototype after prototype, the scientists created thirteen badges/brooches that were different than the other prototypes. When the scientists tried to test those thirteen badges/brooches on the human participants, there were no results. The participants didn't even turn into monsters from those thirteen badges/brooches. The thirteen badges/brooches were considered to be harmless duds, and were thrown out. However, the scientists didn't even begin to consider that someone would take those thirteen badges/brooches.
One day, the lab was infiltrated and the human participants that were turned into monsters were unleashed on the lab, and while the laboratory was in chaos and confusion, all of the prototypes were stolen. The monsters killed the majority of the scientists, but there were a few who managed to escape and come to realize that the prototypes were stolen and out and about. The scientists realized the danger, and initiated the hunt for the prototypes in order to get them back, with the government's help. The search went on for years, and if a monster ever showed up and attacked, it was always covered up by the government. The monsters were always killed despite the knowledge that they were once human. During their search however, they come across something they'd never expect to find.
Twelve teenagers who lived normal lives are given twelve of the thirteen badges/brooches each, by a mysterious figure who hid all of their features under a hat and with a large brown trench coat. The mysterious figure disappeared before the teenagers could even question the person or chase after them. The teenagers hold onto the brooches/badges, and they slowly find that a particular sense of theirs is heightened, and other strange things happen around them. They soon find themselves in a middle of a monster attack. To their, and the scientists', surprise, their brooches not only gave them powers, but also allowed the teenagers to transform, not into monsters, but into superheroes with their own unique weapon. The teenagers defeat the monster, but instead of killing the monster, they turned the monster back into a human.
The teenagers (at least some of them) decide to take up the role of heroes and defend their home from the monsters, while the scientists decide to observe them for the time being (they'll intervene at some point during the rp). Both are unaware of the threat that is growing, plotting, and manipulating things behind the scenes.
