Laughter doesn't hold as much real meaning as joy does. Joy is more than happiness, more than Laughter. Joy is that emotion of uplifting no matter what. Joy isn't always Laughter. Laughter just doesn't cut it. Pinkie and the people who wrote the book didn't understand that, but Smee will.

If you look at laughter on surface level, yeah, but I feel that if you look at it on a deeper scale, it becomes more significant. Laughter isn't restricted to happiness, but the internal laughter that allows you to manage life without losing yourself. Plus, a large purpose of the Element of Laughter was that the bearer caused other people to laugh. It's the Element of being selfless, and uplifting others even when they're down.
