I think of... plasma. A physical substance that's like energy. But whenever we say "energy" at all in MR, we pretty much mean plasma.

Right but that's not the same as what I mean. The shortest possible explanation without all the "other dimensions' laws of physics" stuff is to think of it like complex numbers. The real number is the irl energy, the imaginary number is the ic one. If you think of all energy and matter as the plane, then put energy on one side and matter on the other as pos and neg on the real number axis, the different laws of physics alters the plane in such a way that it can get results using the imaginary number axis at a point other than 0 which is where irl energy/matter falls.
Does that make any sense because it's the shortest explanation.

No in other words I had this huge explanation for that story I've been writing most my life but all the times I've tried to put it down visually it fails because of how it has to work and I've never been able to explain it to anyone in a way they can understand so I tried to apply it to a mathematical concept to shorten the explanation and get it somewhat graspable.
