If he's going into astronomy then a C will be fine. Science fields tend to prefer you demonstrating your understanding and skills rather than what a school assigned as your grade.

I don't disagree that tests don't say much about how you'll actually do in the field, but astronomy requires a great deal of heavy calculus.
