After closing the latch, giving a cheerful nod to Krane and his new recruit, Shila followed them into the underground city and wandered off into a separate path. She had nothing to do until it came time to introduce the new recruits, and all of her recruits had long since scattered into the underground city. Since thinking of them was easier than letting her thoughts wander, where they would inevitably go to her problem, Shila began to think about her recruits to the Rising and how useful they could be. Of course, she also thought about how detrimental they could be. The thief was useful as an Earthbender, Spirits knew that they could always use another one in the underground city, but the money he brought with him could prove to be even more useful. After all, an Earthbender could only do so much. What you could do with money, however, was nearly limitless. Guards could be bribed and equipment could be bought, just to name the obvious. As an added bonus, he was a skilled thief. Subtle work should come naturally to him. On the other side of the coin, however, you couldn’t quite trust a thief to stay true to the cause when things looked like they were going badly. Shila laughed quietly to herself, still wandering the halls. And I suppose you can trust a deserter to stay? She thought, still chuckling. Regardless of whether or not the thief would stay long, his desire to avenge his fallen comrades seemed strong enough. He would remain loyal, for the time being.

Her other recruit, however, was far more promising. At least, to Shila as a Firebender. The girl was clearly very powerful, and had as much potential as a burning candle dropped in the middle of a forest during a drought. On the other hand, while her style was unique, it was still forming and her control over her flames was…lacking. Shila was just grateful that the base they were in was underground with very few flammables. Things wouldn’t have looked good if she had brought the recruit who had accidentally burned down the base.

Shila ignored the looks she got from some of the other people in the halls of Omashu. They ranged from distrust to pure hatred. After all, she was not only a Firebender, but a former Dai Li Firebender. She was everything they hated, all in one neat, easily recognizable, red headed package. Her first week here, someone had tried to kill her. He was a teenager, as much of the Rising members seemed to be, and had had little weapons training. It was pathetically easy for her to disarm him and she didn’t even bother to use her bending. Still, she very nearly shoved a knife through his throat then and there. She didn’t want to have to look over her shoulder the entire time she was in the Rising, and it was better to send a blood red message now than wait until it was too late. Luckily for her ‘opponent’ the person who had brought her into the Rising stopped her. Since that incident, she had been left alone.

As she was left with nothing to do, and no one who wanted to talk to her other than to tell her how much they hated her, Shila found herself leaning against a wall, creating a little Halo of fire above her finger. She was bored out of her mind. At least it was better than being executed for desertion, or trying to find a solution to her problem. A solution to that, she suspected, wasn’t going to come until far later down this path she had chosen. And who knew? Maybe she’d be dead long before then.

After Recruitment

The underground City of Omashu was pretty amazing to Nicias. As an earthbender he admired the intricacy and clear amount of work that had to have gone into it. As a Thief he admired the secrecy even more. It was sturdy, secret and somehow soothing. Nothing like the Shifting sands he once called home. The Rising on the other hand was a bit too familiar. They reminded him of his days as a Dessert Raider, but at least this was for a better cause..for now. After his grand tour Nicias Set up his sleeping quarters. Unlike most Earthbenders he hated sleeping on stone so he slowly ground the slab of rock into fine sand and tied it in a bag. Voila a sand bed for the Sandbender, that was made to his liking. So he laid in it and stared at the ceiling wondering what would happen next.

Would he get to leave the earth kingdom? Would he stay here? Either way he would be content especially since he was already in. He rolled out of his bed and roamed the halls. There were more people than expected but their ranks were by no means numerous. a seemingly ragtag group of pissed off teenagers could be dangerous if used and trained right. From what he was hearing there would be plenty of uses for them, but he wasnt actually sure what that would ultimately. He probably should ask Shila these questions. He turned a corner in search of his recruiter as she would have most if not all the answers.

The Underground City

Patience is a virtue. It was a saying her grandfather used frequently, and no matter how hard she tried, they were words she could never follow. Kalani liked to think of herself as a woman of action. She didn’t believe in destiny or fate, or the idea that everything happened for a reason. Kalani believed in one thing and one thing only.

Her own strength.

With enough will-power, and hard work anything could be achieved. This mindset had brought her this far, and while she respected her grandfather, Kalani wasn’t going to change for anyone. So after five months after arriving, and being taken in by the Rising, she couldn’t help but feel as if she was wasting time just sitting here. Eyeing the bowl of seaweed noodles sitting before her, a hard frown sat along her lips as her fingers tapped impatiently along table. Weren’t there recruits she could meet up with? Or maybe a message that needed to be carried to another safe zone? She could list out a number of different things she could be doing, but instead here she was, stuck in underground Omashu until further orders.

Despite her boredom she didn’t attempt to involve herself in the friendly chatter taking place amongst the others at the table, but at the sudden creak of the front door, the conversation had been cut short. Greeted by the others as he entered the room with the new recruit, Kalani didn’t even bat an eye as Krane passed behind her. She had met the young air bender her first day here, and despite fighting for the same goal, his relations to the fire nation caused her to be all the more distant.

The Rising was full of diversity, and that included fire benders and fire nation natives, and while she would treat them cordially, it didn’t mean she had to be comfortable around these people. It was only a few months ago that her grandfather had been slaughtered at the hands of fire nation police, so Kalani believed she had every right to feel the way that she did. With time she knew her feelings would change, or at least thats what she had been told, but until then the water bender was going to stick to her ways and follow her gut.

As Krane left the room with the new recruit, Kalani caught sight of Shila following after them out the door. Deciding to follow their lead instead of sticking around and doing nothing, she left her untouched food bowl along the table and exited to the streets of the Underground city with intentions to find something to do.

The Kwan Family
Location: Middle of Nowhere in the Earth Kingdom
Open? No

The hot white disk of a sun bore down upon the dry and dusty plains of the Earth Kingdom. Whilst too hot to be actively supporting much wildlife, the sands of the desert have not encroached upon this endless stretch of flat, hard dirt, leaving the surface with deep wrinkles and cracks with the odd shrivelled plant desperately poking from the red earth - an echo from the rainy seasons. A thin pale beaten path split the red landscape in two, and it was this self-same path that a group of people would be traversing across at that very moment in time.

Admittedly, the Kwan Family didn't -really- mull over the lack of water and money as they left their home around a week ago and thus supplies were starting to encroach dangerously low levels. With about half a water barrel left for all three of them -and- the Ostrich Horse which was plodding along with them, supplies were reaching a dangerously low level and there hasn't been a signpost in ages.

"It's a straight path," Jian would repeat monotonously, in time with the beat of her sandals on the hard dirt. "We're going to find a town sooner or later."

Should anyone at this point believe that Jian was being surprisingly level-headed, they would be sorely mistaken. Jian was not someone to throw a temper tantrum, but she can writhe in her own sour temper for weeks on end - and has been doing so for the past 7 days in a row. She was one of those 'quietly mad' people - her footfalls were stomps, her body swayed with the thumping of her heart and she would've ground her teeth into indistinguishable stumps if she wasn't too tired to do so in the first place.

However, Jian was resolute. She knew they'd find a town sooner or later because it was impossible for them to -not- find a town on this road. She gazed down at the dusty path ahead of them and saw the clues. Cart tracks. Footprints. Some travelling party has been across this road and recently, and they were bigger than our team, much bigger...but only one cart. And the tracks aren't too heavy either. All signs, to her, pointed towards a lightly-packed team of people headed across this road and she'll either find a town, or a bunch of dehydrated corpses and an old cart.

...She really hoped it was the former.

The Swordsman
Location: Earth Kingdom - Middle of Nowhere

The Earth Kingdom shrivelled up like a bug under a magnifying glass. Too dry to support anything but the withered husks of what were once plants, it was a rare occurrence to see another human being out on in the harsh outskirts of civilisation. A well-trodden path cut through the endless arid plains, marked by the old dusty footprints of previous travellers – the only connection to life in such a desolate landscape.

The sea of parched, cracked earth was broken only by a dark, human-shaped blot by the side of the road, the spot marked by a katana embedded deep in the ground. It was eerily similar to the grave markers for fallen swordsmen; the only difference being that the 'corpse' was still holding on to the hilt with a desperate grip. The trail he'd left behind suggest he dragged himself for a few meters to ensure he was visible to passing wanderers before just... giving up.

Crushed glass surrounded the man, stinking of cheap liquor and covered in fresh blood – quite probably his own. One bottle was clenched in his free hand, emptied of the last drop, while dried in rivulets ran down his chin. The overpowering smell of a night of boozing still permeated the area; however, the cuts on the man's face – coinciding with the glass shards from a broken bottle – suggested a brawl would be the cause of death, not alcohol poisoning.

Except he wasn't dead. His breathing was shallow and he showed no reaction to the pain of his injuries, but there were signs of life indeed – including the trail of drool dripping from the corner of his mouth. A sign fastened by a rope around his neck (horribly misspelled and mostly illegible) read, 'Swordman Jun four sale. Help needed.' Clearly the poor wanderer hadn't received any Earth Kingdom hospitality. Dragged on a cart out into the middle of nowhere, dumped and left to the buzzards.

A shadow loomed over his unconscious body and he hummed in relief as it blocked out the torturous sunlight on his burnt, blistering skin. Perhaps it was help?

"Sister... You said that days ago..." Shin groaned, hanging his upper body off the cart's edge. Shin wouldn't even be up if his sister didn't need someone for company, and Xiao was catching some shuteye. So it had to be him. What didn't help matters, however, was that they hadn't had a proper meal (breakfast, lunch or dinner) for days! How could she expect him to be decent company when he was hungry and tired?! It's torture...

With a loud yawn, Shin pulled himself together and hopped off the cart. It took a moment to balance, sure, but once he gained his footing he plodded along next to his sister. "Let's hope it's a town this time. I could use a good meal," he chirped with sarcasm. "Wouldn't want to feast on some corpses now. I hear that is bad for you." He knew his sister probably wasn't in the mood for his jokes, but she needed to lighten up a bit.

Shin knew she wouldn't admit it, but he could tell it in her body language that she wasn't alright. At least in terms of mood. She was always one to keep it to herself. That being said, they were all in this together, and she could use some cheering up. "You know, once we find a town, we should asks for directions and how long it takes to get to said location. Might help us when we restock on supplies for the trip, you know?"

Shila, noticing the waterbender Kalani, gave a cheerful smile and a wave as Kalani passed, but made no move to follow her or make conversation. She knew that Kalani disliked her to say the least. After all, she was an ex-Dai Li. The epitome of everything everyone in the Rising hated about the Phoenix Kingdom. And the waterbender seemed to hate the Kingdom with more fervor than most. However, that didn’t mean she had to be as hostile as Kalani was to her. At least, not unless the waterbender did something they all would regret. Still, she would achieve nothing by leaning against the wall and idly amusing herself. Keeping her little flame halo alive above her finger, Shila walked towards where she assumed Uquo was going to be giving his speech to the new recruits. She had always liked Uquo. With his wit and charm, how could anyone dislike him? While she had never met his brother, Ukoda, she suspected one of them would have died if she had gone to him with her offer of assistance. Stories of his war fueled mind abounded, offset by stories of his ability to be persuasive when he needed to be. Regardless, she believes that Ukoda will not be pleased to learn that an ex-Dai Li member was allowed into the Rising, assuming she doesn’t die before they meet. If they ever even meet.

Shila strolled through the halls of the Undercity, now remarkably empty since she had left most of the people up front, concentrating on controlling her little halo of fire, slowly changing its shape and size. Finesse had been important to her master, and a favorite saying of his that he had beaten into her head was ‘Using Fire without control is like swinging wildly and powerfully at the enemy with your allies next to you. You might hit and severely injure your opponents, but you’d eventually kill one of your friends.’ Quite the talker, her master had been, but his lessons had hit home. Power was nothing without control, which was why the Dai Li were created. They were the control of the power of the Phoenix King. That is, before he started brazenly and blatantly betraying everything the Kingdom stood for. Shila was loyal to the ideals of the Kingdom, not the King. Hence why she was here, with many people who would rather see her dead than her helping. Shila smirked as she walked towards where she thought Uquo might be. I never claimed to be all that bright at making the right choices…

The noise of the bar flooded Yan's senses as he sat at the bar drinking the poor excuse of cactus juice that was handed to him. The almost traditional drink in the Earth Kingdom varied, as many things do, and he assumed that winding up in a major city like Omashu that the cantina's could at least offer up once decent drink. Although the reason he was here, he figured, a lousy drink would be all that he needed. It wasn't even a fortnight ago that the rumors of new resistance group reached his ears in the outlands surrounding Omashu, rumors that were compelling enough to pull Jampo out of hiding and make a bee-line dash to the great city in the hopes to meet with someone from this Rising that would be able aid him in his entry, but so far he had very little success. Since the day that he arrived Yan had noticed a small group, no more than three or four, had been keeping track of him no doubt with his decade plus of resistance affiliation. As far as he knew, they had no suspicions that he was an airbender, which he hoped to keep that way in the chance that he might have to get into a fight. As the doors of the small, hole in the wall, cantina swung open Yan instinctively slid to hold his staff which sat beside him as he eyed the new patrons with cautious eyes and sure enough three Fire Nation Police came and sat two tables behind him

Now where did the fourth one go?

Vibrant, cerulean orbs seemed to glow past the shadow casted by her hood as she cautiously looked around the bar. Unsure of where the fourth Officer went, she returned her gaze back to the bearded man, and the small group of fire nation officers sitting only a few feet away from her. Like her hot-headed counterparts, Kalani had been following the suspicious looking old man once he entered Omashu, but with her face plastered on wanted posters all over the streets of Omashu, and most of the Southern Earth Kingdom she knew better then to go out without a disguise. While it wasn't much, a dark grey cloak covered her from head to toe, allowing her to slip past the oblivious eyes of the fire nation police as she sneaked about the city. Hood still atop her head and a glass of water sitting before her, Kalani blended in amongst the crowd as she carefully watched the officers, and the strange old man.

Informed by one of the many ‘little birds’ fluttering around the city, the Rising had assigned Kalani to seek out this 'potential recruit’ that had suddenly arrived, but upon reveal she wasn't all too impressed. His thick salt and pepper colored hair, and beard gave him a rather senile appearance, and with a simple glance at his clothing Kalani had deduced him down to two things; he was either an ambitious homeless man who was looking for a death wish, or a nomad who had traveled sometime to get here. Of course none of this really mattered to her, what truly mattered here and now was if this man was even worthy of joining the Rising. So rather then intervening and ruining her cover, Kalani simply sat back and waited for the police to make the first confrontation.

The sound of reverberating bootsteps echoed in the hall loud enough to hush the surrounding noise, a sign which meant that a fight was immanent. Keeping a calm exterior Yan continued drinking the last of his cactus juice and set his glass down onto the bar and waited for the inevitable. The man smelled of an odd mixture of cantina smell with whatever he had on him from his previous locations. The room became deathly quiet as the Officer came and stood directly behind him.

"Your new around here aren't you?

"Yes actually...and I would like to be left alone."

The blunt response caught the officer off guard not expecting to here such outward defiance. After a brief moment to collect himself, he once again reasserted himself.

"You've been acting suspicious ever since you've arrived. I'm under order by Fire Lord Regent Iroh under the command of Phoenix King Ozai to arrest any with the suspicion of activity to any resistance group."

With a heavy sigh Yan had guessed that it was time to leave, albeit by a more violent means than had anticipated. A firm hand grasped his shoulder and without a second thought Yan spun to the right, breaking the hold and using his free hand to push the officers face into the bar, effectively rendering him unconscious. Within the same breath he grabbed his staff and made a wide swing sending a massive gust of wind knocking the other two hard into the wall. Now the center of attention Yan gathered his things, left the payment for his drink (plus a tip for damages) and preceded to walk out the door. As he stood in the door way he called to the other set of eyes that had been watching him,

"If were going to escape we need to go now."

At the scene before her, the young woman felt her heart ram against her chest as a wide grin slipped across her features. He was an Airbender! Standing from her chair and moving with haste once he called out to her, Kalani spoke in a hushed tone up to the man as she stepped past him and out of the bar, “If you’re searching for the resistance, follow me!” Taking the lead, adrenaline pounded in her ears as she made quick steps down the busy side walk. Side stepping and shoving past a few civilians a loud shout came from across the street as three other officers ran fell in pursuit, forcing Kalani to break out into a run.

“Stop right there!” With little care for the civilians nearby fireballs were sent hurling towards the two causing terrified screams and chaos to break out within the streets. Raising her hands out of the cloak and revealing her watertribe garb, she pulled the water from the storm drains, bursting the manholes off the cover as a large wave circled with her movement. Moving quickly she twisted around blocking the first fireball and causing half of the shield to splatter in hot water and steam, but as she finally faced her attackers Kalani smoothly shot out her left hand firing the water out in a powerful stream, and effectively striking down two of the officers.

Despite the danger, a grin was clear on the young woman’s face as her dark hood fell back. Goosebumps rose on her skin as a wild look came to her eye, but rather then sticking around for reinforcements to show up she broke out into a run and headed down an alley way, “This way!” Trying to lose the police, Kalani lead the airbender onto another street as she searched desperately for a sewage drain. ‘Where is it?’ Turning down another street a startled gasp slipped from her lips as she skidded to a halt. Blocking the path before her were five fire nation officers with their fists raised and ready to attack. Turning around and attempting to run the other direction, the three officers from before were now standing behind them. “Well,” With her back to the old man, a small smirk settled along her lips as she caught sight of a large sewage drain only a few feet away from her, “Think you can keep up, old man?”

As the two quickly made their way down the street Yan kept pondering the mystery that was teenage girl that was dragging him along. The thick and heavy grey cloak masked most of her features so it was hard to tell from what nation she hailed from. Yan's musing were interupted when an exclamation and a medley of fireballs came hurtling towards them and with graceful instinct Yan jumped as high as he could onto an adjacent wall then swung his staff mid-air and sent a sharp gust of wind to deflect two of the fireballs into the street leaving mild craters of rock and ash. As he landed he watched as the mysterious girl pull water from the storm drains and with great skill defeated the remaining guards.

'A waterbender...well that IS interesting.'

Once again following the girls lead, the two continued running down streets looking for something Yan could only guess at. Having found what she was looking for the girl pointed at the large sewage drain as she issued her challange. Yan couldn't help but smirk back at her, she reminded him of himself in his early years at the Temple. Bending a vortex under the drain cover, Yan pulled the cover off of the drain and set it to the side as he walked over to the and looked down at her with a matching grin.

"The question should be...

Yan stepped into the drain and on his way down he called back,

"...Can you?

P A T I E N C E part 2
Underground Omashu -- Sewage Tunnels

Bright eyes widened at the mans words, forcing her playful smirk to widen into a grin as she watched him jump down the hole. Firing out at the young woman, Kalani followed the old mans lead, evading the fireballs and jumping down the drain. Landing into the water with a soft grunt, she turned her gaze up just as the officers peaked down and prepared to jump. Standing quickly Kalani raised her palms sending two heavy streams of water spurting up and out of the manhole, making sure the officers couldn’t follow them slender arms began to briskly twist in a clock wise motion causing the water to intertwine. Soft cracking could be heard as its temperature began to cool, solidify into a thick, and coiled icicle blocking the entry way.

With a smirk on her face, and the wild look in her eyes once again she turned her sights down the passage way. Giving the airbender an unintentional head start, Kalani began to take strong steps forward, and with no resistance from the water she began to sprint down the tunnel. Swiping a flat palm along the top of the stream just as she jumped out of the water and kicked off the wall, a thin, oval shaped sheet of ice materialized beneath her feet. Moving fluidly as she landed Kalani’s hands pulled back, forcing the current to strengthen and large wave to carry her down at intense speeds.

Wind and water whipped past her grinning face as she sped down the main passage way. Cooped up for the past few months since her arrival, it had been a long time since Kalani had done anything fun. Of course, while many didn’t consider such a violent confrontation as means of entertainment, it had cured Kalani of cabin fever, allowing the tense young woman to finally relax and let loose. Catching sight of the airbender up ahead, a playful laugh rumbled from her chest before she called out to him, “Don’t go the wrong way!” Carried by the wave she crouched low along her board, and with a firm grip along the cold rim, Kalani’s free hand swept out changing the currents direction and forcing her to take a hard right turn down another dark passage way. The sewage system was like a maze, those that didn’t know its twists and turns always ended up lost, but for Kalani and the other members of the Rising that called this place home, navigating through the tunnels were a cinch.

Taking the lead, Kalani guided the old man for quite some time, and as they drew deeper she knew they would be arriving at the first destination at any minute. Catching sight of the rotting iron door, her left arm raised up while her left lowered, causing the current to carry her softly to the floor and the board to dissolve beneath her feet. Still moving with the momentum, the thick wave crashed against the wall with a dull thud as water swirled around Kalani's legs as before it finally settled, allowing silence to take over. Standing before the door, the tanned young woman stood tall and proud, and once the airbender caught up she spoke up in a confident tone, “Before we go any further I think it’s time I properly introduce myself,” Raising her hand out, a toothy grin sat along her features, “Name’s Kalani, and if you’re the person I think you are, then I’ll be your guide to the resistance from here on out."

He Who is Uquo
the Introduction of a Leader

"You missed Uquo," Krane replied.

The words may have echoed a bit. Maybe it wasn't a real echo, but more akin to one were the listener wonders if what they heard was right. In this case, it was. A mere twenty minutes into her nap, Uquo had visited the rec center. His assessment was both quick and thorough; a quick look and conversation with most new recruits led to a majority of them being accepted. Few were not. Those few would be destined, or more accurately fated in the most unfortunate way, to be dealt with before even leaving the Underground City. It was secret that must be kept, and those visiting all risked their lives. If not for being considered a traitor to the Phoenix Kingdom, than to the traitors whom demanded absolute loyalty. It was a odd and somewhat contradictory, but a necessity all the same.

...Just a few minutes earlier...

Uquo walked into the rec center. Although he didn't have the appearance or intimidating stature one might expect from a Waterbending master and elite solider from the Northern Water Tribe, he all the same demanded respect merely by walking in. His garb, at least while in the Underground City, was a thinner variant of the traditional Waterbending wardrobe, complete with wolftooth earrings and a white-skinned mantle. As a matter of fact, this type of garb would immediately draw attention and make a bold statement literally anywhere else in for hundreds of miles. Aside from the Northern and Southern Water Tribe, such attire would be a taboo; and, that was the reason Uquo wore it. Everything Uquo did had a purpose, and wearing symbolic clothing to deliver a powerful message was definitely one of them. Anywhere else, this would have drawn immediate attention. He wore it to remind everyone that this wasn't anywhere else.

Uquo had only brief conversations with any single recruit there or their respective recruiter. Even Krane was only given a quick wave. Tanvi wasn't even awoken; she was approved with a quick nod, and left in her tentative sleep by a silent slip of a paper given to Krane by Uquo. Everyone else was essentially rounded up after their introductions for a quick explanation of their goal. It was simple. There were more new recruits this month than ever; normally, recruits were attained via political methods from Uquo, not single-handed recruitment such as this. For the next month, instead of being given immediate approval, the new recruits would shadow their respective recruiters, being analyzed, since Uquo quickly decided he didn't have time to do it himself, and learning more about the Rising. Or, if they were not 'accepted', making sure what they learned was put to a permanent rest.

There was an atmosphere created when Uquo entered. He couldn't have been there longer than twenty minutes, twenty-five, tops. There was no uproar. His presence was actually quite light. Yet, at the same time, one knew to listen. When he spoke, there was a sincerity in his voice. Even though he was mostly dismissive and seemingly rushed, Uquo never sounded nor seemed the least disrespectful. Even to the youth, whom always demand attention, he seemed so busy and blurry that just a greeting from him was enough to sate their thirst for attention. To those that demanded respect, such as the Airbending Masters in the room, it was easily read that Uquo was not disgracing them with his rush, but methodically realizing that he didn't have the ability to assess all of them, and thus designed a new system on the spot.

To some, he asked more. He asked them to stay for a coronation ceremony, the lighting of the autumn blaze, which burned a darker red with purple hues. In the Underground City, the fire essentially lit everything, thus its light and its hue set the mood. As summer was ending, it was time for the brighter fire to be quelled and the new fire to be set ablaze. Those Uquo asked to stay for this ceremony were those he wished to speak to in more depth. Others were not obligated to, but were just as welcome. It was one of the few actual festivities within the Underground City; most activity was, quite factually, pure work. A rebellion was not the setting for frivolity and festivity, but Uquo did attempt to keep the morale of his people up. There were similar festivities being held in the other headquarters of the Rising, so this concept of morale and culture was perpetuated within the entire Rising. One could say Uquo had created a culture of rebellion.

While Nicias wondered the underground halls in search of Shila it also gave him a chance to get a feel of his surroundings. One thing he always needed to know when entering a place was how to get out. Sure being an earthbender gave him more ways out then everyone else but knowing the preferred escape route was also a good thing as well. He didn’t actively look for them but he was mindful of his surrounding kept an eye out for them. With such a large place and so few people the halls seemed almost empty. It was strange, he noted, that they seemed exceptionally empty at the moment.

As he continued his slow and steady search he eventually found where everyone else was. It seemed to be a gathering of just about everyone in the group. As he scanned the small crowd for Shila he caught sight of a bold figure. The man was wearing waterbender clothing, complete with wolf-tooth earrings ad a white-skinned mantle. That wasn’t the kind of thing you wore unless you wanted to make a statement. Nicias watched the man for a while as he seemed to make a quick circuit around the room. It wasn’t until the man spoke to Nicias that he figured out who he was. By then he had had is suspicions and theories but they were laid to rest with the very brief exchange of words.
With that mystery laid to rest he moved to the edge of the room and put his back against the wall. Slowly he scanned the room looking for shila. He thought that her red hair would stand out but maybe she just wasn’t there yet. After all, he had stumbled into this meeting without much of an invitation or heads up. It was possible, though unlikely, that she wasn’t told either. So instead of leaving to look for her, he waited there in hopes she would arrive.

Shila was taking care of those recruits that hadn’t been selected by Uquo. There were only three this time, which made her job easier. As she lead them away from the others, promising to take them away from here and let them go back to their lives. A lie, of course. They couldn’t be let back to their homes. The Phoenix Kingdom could find them and make them talk about where the Undercity was. That was risk they were willing to take for those who were working to further the Rising’s cause. But not one they were willing to take with those who weren’t even accepted. She led them to the room she used for the work. It was empty, suitably far away from the gathering, and close to a very deep crevice. As they trooped in past her, she slipped a knife from her sleeve into her hand. The earthbender would have to die first, of course. This was his world, and she didn’t want to have boulders flung at her. As luck would have it, the earthbender was the last one in. She closed the door behind her quickly, and shoved her knife into the base of his skull while his back was still turned. She pulled her knife from his skull, and took two steps forward to the next refused recruit. She had turned in confusion and was about to speak, when the knife slipped between her ribs and pierced her heart. Just before all life fled her eyes, she stared at Shila, surprise and a question in them. Then she died.

The final rejected recruit was well aware of what was going on by this point. With a cry of alarm and fear, he tried to bull rush past her, to sound the alarm to the others in the Undercity. Shila stepped the side and tripped him as he ran past, and then stabbed him in the side of the neck as he tried to scramble up. Blood gushed everywhere, and he fell to the floor, trying to stop the flow of blood. She stabbed the base of his skull to kill him quickly so he would stop thrashing. Wiping her blade on the shirt of the man she had just killed, Shila’s lip curled in distaste. “Messy. Far too messy. Should have moved quicker.” Shaking her head, she returned her knife to its place in her sleeve, and then opened the door. Glancing about to ascertain that there was no one walking about, she dragged the first body out, closed and locked the door behind her, and then carried the corpse to the crevice. She repeated this twice, being very careful to avoid getting blood on herself or anywhere outside of the room. After cleaning up the room (which means she burned away all the blood in it), she walked back to the Coronation. She saw Nicias, and greeted him with a friendly wave, walking over to the thief. “Haven’t stolen anything yet, have you?”

The trek through the sewers had actually been more fun that Yan had anticipated. As the two traded leads for a considerable distance, it brought him back to his early years at the Temple and how the monks tried to integrate fun along with the teachings. For the first time in at least a decade he was actually having fun and it showed by the smile on his face. The trip, which seemed like mere moments, ended when Kalani brought them to the rotting iron door, when she took a moment to introduce herself,

“Before we go any further I think it’s time I properly introduce myself,” Raising her hand out, a toothy grin sat along her features, “Name’s Kalani, and if you’re the person I think you are, then I’ll be your guide to the resistance from here on out.

Returning her grin and handshake, Yan added a slight nod of his head in a mock bow,

"I am Yan Tao, airbender of the Eastern Air Temple. It is a pleasure to meet someone with a passion for bending."

Following his lead and giving her own bow, Kalani stared up at him in awe. Other then Krane, and Rabten, there were no other airbenders within the resistance, so Kalani couldn’t help but feel a little pride she was the one leading him to the Underground Omashu. Turning her gaze and to the the door, she pulled out a large key from her pouch, before proceeding to unlock the large door, “Well, Yan Tao,” Opening the heavy door with a loud creek, Kalani motioned with her arm for airbender to step in first, “Welcome to the Rising.” A loud bang echoed through the dark tunnel as she shut the door behind them, making sure to lock it before she took the lead once again.

“A little anti-climatic, I know, but it’s just a little further since we took a detour from the city entrance..” Like the iron door, the walls of the tunnel looked recently new as unlit torches marked the pathway. Grabbing one of the many from it’s handle, Kalani lit the torch and began walking calmly through the tunnels, leading Yan Tao through the labyrinth like passage ways. The journey through the beginning of the sewers had been long, and confusing, but the young woman knew it would only take a few minutes from here to reach the Underground City. So rather then growing comfortable with the silence, Kalani spoke up trying to spark up conversation in an attempt to get to know Yan Tao. With a light smile on her face the water bender turned her head, gazing up at the old man as her voice echoed softly through the tunnels, “So, did you come here from the Eastern Air Temple?”

The mention of the Temple brought a quiet sadness to Yan's face. It had been many years since he had been to the Temple and his stubborn act of defiance against Teyri-yhama had, at least in Yan's mind, left a bad taste in everyone's mouth. With hushed words Yan replied,

"Actually I haven't been to the Temple in at least a decade and a half, I have been living in the outlands of Omashu for the last few years and only heard about the Rising a fortnight ago."[b]

The sudden thought of his arrival to Omashu had brought to mind Jampo which he had left a safe distance outside the city walls. At some point, Yan figured, he should probably go find him again.

[b]"By the way, would there be a place to allow my sky bison to rest here within the Underground? The last I had checked Jampo was flying away into the morning sun and I want to make sure that he will be safe."

Frowning, her eyebrows knitted together in concern as she listened to airbender. There was more to his story, and she could hear it in the tone of his voice. Shame, longing, regret. Kalani knew what it was like to be away from home, and while she had made the decision to leave, there were times that she did feel home-sick. With those facts in mind, she knew she could not relate and her advice was limited, so with with nothing to say she addressed the question about the bison, “I’m sure we can find a place for him here, but you’ll have to talk to one of the earth benders about making a path.”

From the darkness, a large iron door came into sight, lighting up as Kalani and Yan soon stood before it. Digging around in pouch and pulling out the key once again, the lock clicked open and with a heavy groan, Kalani swung the door open. "Welcome to Underground Omashu, Yan Tao."

The vastness of the underground city stretched out before him in a grand spectacle of earthbending prowess, to which Yan had to stand in awe of. He had heard of the skill and strength of the legendary benders but had never had the pleasure of seeing it first hand. As the duo walked through the streets of the underground city Yan's glance passed over the countless teenagers that made up the Risings members and Yan couldn't help but ponder the effectiveness of children, benders or not, in combat. Upon second thought, however, he was just recruited by a waterbender with amazing skill so he supposed that one couldn't judge by looks alone. Having an odd thought in his head, Yan brought up something that he had pondered for a while,

"By the by, how many other airbenders do we have here?

After putting out the torch and securing the door behind them, Kalani lead the airbender down the main path as he admired the cities structure, and interior. His question made her a little uneasy, since he still had yet to be ‘officially’ initiated, but Kalani was sure a bit of information wouldn’t hurt, “Just a few. To be honest, I wasn’t really sure any air benders would join the cause.” Her mind immediately drifted to Krane, and Rabten. “Then again, the resistance has opened my eyes to a lot of things, I suppose.”

As they rounded about the corner, Kalani caught sight of the rec center up ahead, watching as people entered and exited the main entrance doors. “Looks like we got here just in time.” Hurrying across the street and halting at the entrance doors, the young woman smiled broadly as turned to face the 'recruit', “Since you’re not officially apart of the resistance, I can’t show you the rest of the city or answer anymore questions, but luckily today is the day of the coronation ceremony.”

“Once you’re initiated, I can answer anything that comes to mind, so save all of your questions for after.” Grasping the handle of door and revealing the crowd inside, Kalani encouraged the airbender to walk in with a motion of her arm, “Better yet, you’ll probably be meeting someone who can answer your questions far better then I ever could.”
