Okay here is the gladiator CS. I'll get working on a post asap, busy times as of late, but I have some time to spare today :)
A bit rushed but I hope the character will become more fleshed out as we go.
Name:
Ansgar Corcoran
Age:
23
Nationality:
Celtic β Iceni
Rank within nation:
Roman Slave - Gladiator
Appearance:
Ansgar shares the same fiery red hair as his sister and parents, however his appears naturally darker in shade than that of his sisters. He has a powerful build, lithe and strong he appears quite formidable due to the daily training he has endured for the last twelve years of his life. His back bears numerous scars from both whipping and the occasional beating that he received as a βtroublesomeβ youth, however they are now healed and little more than reminders of his captivity. He has a strong and handsome face, or so he is told by his owner who has noticed that Ansgar is more than a little popular with the women who he encounters, his 'exotic' nature fuelling their desires.
Background
Taken as a slave during a raid on his village with his younger sister Ansgar was sold to a Ludi as a boy, shipped to Hispania Ulterior he initially was taken on as a errand boy, given numerous tasks to assist with the training and upkeep of the real gladiators. To begin with he struggled against his oppressors and did everything he could to resist or strike back against them, at least before a few severe beatings knocked that behaviour out of him. As he aged he grew in height and strength dramatically, and at the age of 14 he began his own gladiator training, severe and strict, but he soon came to realise that the path to his freedom was through the bloodied arenaβs, through the grand colosseum in Rome. His first real fight to the death came at the age of 17, he defeated and decapitated a hulking Germanic brute, some captured chiefdom who had been expected to come away victorious, however Ansgar had surprised everyone with his raw speed and strength combined with a stunning technique. His owner, a man called Lentulus Batiatus had seen the opportunity then and there. He quickly made Ansgar his favoured fighter and after several more victories he decided that it was time to tour his property through Africa and eventually to Rome. It has taken quite some time but finally Ansgar was in sight of his possible freedom, though it seemed more likely he would die here, or so he thought.
After several battles in the arena it became clear that Ansgar was very popular, not only amongst the plebs of Rome but also the many Patrician families. His owner was in heaven, the gold flowing into his hands as the young Celt made him rich. One evening as Ansgar had finished drilling Lentulus had come to him, a huge grin upon his face and bottle of fine wine with a pair of mugs. He had proceeded to tell him that a very wealthy merchant had entered into negotiations with him to arrange the marriage of Ansgar to one of his daughters. He had explained that his next fight would be his last, and providing that he survived he would be granted with a rudis (wooden sword that represents his freedom) and then married to a young girl called Ateret. He would then be employed at the Ludus Magnus as a Gladiator trainer, the grandest and most prestigious Ludi in all of Rome as a βfreemanβ.
Strengths, weaknesses, phobias, et cetera:
Ansgar is a trained killer, not a soldier however he is best at fighting a single or small number of men as opposed to larger conflicts. He is pure muscle, having trained each day of his life for the last twelve years β having not a trace of softness or fat about his physique. Cold and calculating Ansgar has realised that life is nothing more than one long fight, one he is now determined to win despite his dire circumstances .
He is somewhat cold and distant compared to most, however this is a result of his upbringing as a gladiator. He can only read the more basic words and characters, and can only write his own name β both being skills that he has never needed or received any training in. He has forgotten much of his origin, including his native tongue and can now only speak a few basic phrases in Iceni.
That being said Ansgar still has much to learn, especially if granted his relative freedom it will take some time and effort for him to become a part of society, but he is never the less determined to do it.
He has an un-tapped depth, his situation never calling for him to expose his inner feelings. In fact quite the opposite, he has a wall guarding his inner-most fellings and appears most stoic to those he meets. Maybe if he wasn't facing death regularly he would be able to relax somewhat, but realistically it may take a determined person to make Ansgar more intimate.
Ambition:
Freedom, wealth, glory β but most of all he wants to be his own man. Beyond that he wants to experience life as much as he can.
