So yeah like, I'd try to defend you, Rax, but I'm also a college freshman so it would feel weird to say anything.

Point is don't stereotype it makes me feel oppressed and shit.

Oh, Clirkus. We all know things are bad -- worse than bad -- they're crazy. It's like everything everywhere is going crazy, so we don't go out any more. We sit in our dorms, and slowly the world we're living in is getting smaller, and all we say is, "Please, at least leave me alone in my dormitory. Let me have my classrooms and my drawings and my super special mechanical pencil, and I won't say anything. Just leave me alone."Well, I'm not going to leave you alone.I want you to get mad!I don't want you to protest. I don't want you to riot. I don't want you to write to your college's staff, because I wouldn't know what to tell you to write. I don't know what to do about the freshmen and the thievery and the Russians and the missing mechanical pencil. All I know is that first, you've got to get mad. You've gotta say, "I'm a human being, goddammit! My pencil has value!"So, I want you to get up now. I want you to get up out of your chair. I want you to get up right now and go to the window, open it, and stick your head out and yell,"I'm as mad as hell, and I'm not going to take this anymore!"

This is the longest KB post I have seen in a while wow I feel honored.

Of course I know not ALL the freshmen came together and were like "let's go steal Clirkus' stuff". It was probably just one person and perhaps I am overreacting but I really did love that pencil and I am an otherwise easygoing happy-go-lucky person and I feel like it shouldn't be too much to ask. I don't usually leave my stuff just lying around (I'm not a moron, I don't just go around inviting calamity upon myself) and really I like most of this year's freshmen.

I just hate how overlooked stealing seemingly inconsequential things is, I think we should do like in the old days when the punishment for stealing was cut off the thief's hand. I guarantee you that if that were still in practice these kinds of occurrences would almost never happen.

So yeah, trust no one.

I really loved that pencil.

Oh, don't

I copied and pasted most of that

But it's the clever thoughts that count

Or at least that's what they told me a long time ago and I chose to model my life as if that statement were fact and I suppose it would be rather upsetting if it turned out they were wrong all this time

Oh well

Halo, shhh, I wasn't really saying Marik was giving advice (because yeah it definitely did look like some blame placing), I was playing off your "asking for it" thing and making a thinly veiled comparison/parallel to rape and victim blaming and that realm of things.

oh
'cause yeah that was what I was trying to get at with the "asking for it" thing and then

carry on

You are correct, it is not morally wrong to not take precautions. In the examples you provided, it is very clear that yes the victims in the situations did nothing wrong. However, in the pencil scenario, it's rather petty and small, taking the correct precautions to protect your things is very common knowledge. Don't leave your wallet in your back pocket in an airport, don't walk alone in sketchy areas, yeah? It's never ever "your fault" if something bad happens to you, but it's pretty simple, precautions are as easy as putting your pencil in your pocket before you get up from your desk, putting the wallet in your front pocket, or taking the long way home. Again, it's not applicable in larger/more complicated situations like you outlined in your post, but works here for our purposes with Rax.

I was gonna respond to this and then I had a horrifying realisation. Without even setting foot in OT, I am becoming one of them. Every thread I set foot in...

They'll forgive you so long as you're not the kind of person to steal other people's writing utensils.

Seventh level of hell, here I come.
Okay, to be fair, I'd never take it in the scenario you painted. But there are plenty of times I've borrowed pens and forgotten to give them back. Technically, and in the eyes of my school, I "stole" them.
And now I can't help thinking about how shitty a student I was. D:
