The year was 922. Exploration was big for the Nords. Expansion was a must for many countries, but not all could afford to expand so easily. Britain, the Gret-Empire-To-Be was in the midst of its own wars. Civil wars, mainly. It was weak, and a new ruler was soon to be crowned, if the country could be taken. Many Norse rulers wished to take this land for their own, but many did not have the power to do so by themselves. They required armies. They required Vikings such as yourselves. You are warriors of your kind. Even amongst te powerful Vikings, you are respected and feared for your prowess in battle. This is why you have been hired for a war. The ruler that wishes you to follow him will not allow himself to be named, but he wishes that you will do as he asks, in return for plenty of gold each and whatever you wish to pillage during your battles. Now, here you stand, weapons in hand and ready to board your ship, the Jorvik Lander, and are about to set off on the greatest journey of your lives, as it may be the last.

I would've liked to base my character on my favourite warlord of the era, Torkel the tall, but I guess that would be overdoing it a bit. I do have another guy lined up though, a Cohen the barbarian kind of guy, i think he'll fit like a glove. Though I will be bending the age-rule a bit.

Name: Alrik Wolfborn
Age: 22
Gender: Male

Description: A brute of a man, Alrik stands about six feet eight tall and is extremely muscular. He is honest and to the point, but many people mistake him for an idiot. He knows this and will make full use of it. In general he is kind and friendly, but when he enters a battle rage he becomes an unstoppable juggernaut who'll slaughter anyone in his path.

Preferred Weapon: Alrik wields twin axes. In the hands of anyone else, these axes would require two hands, but his size and strength make them seem much smaller in his hands.

Background: Alrik was orphaned at an early age and grew up a feral child. He was found by a Viking expedition who brought him back with much difficulty, losing one of their number to his beserk attacks. Although he learnt to be civilized and is now indistinguishable from any other Viking, he retains this feral rage.

Background
Ysgrif grew up in the Firehand household with the will for battle. All his ancenstors had been great warriors (on the male side, with a few women mixed in) and he always felt that he was destined for great battles. He is a very religious man, always praying before shedding blood. Ysgrif stands at 6' even and has broad shoulders, dark hair and eyes, a fierce goatee, and weighs 200lbs. He is muscular from years of training and combat and tends to get angry when a battle doesn't go his way, resulting in him going blind with rage and giving into overkill. Usually, however, he can keep his anger under control and can be very diplomatic and cunning. After 6 years of being part of an actual army, he turned to mercenary work over a year ago and now is with this band of other Vikings to go into battle once more.

Backround: Ǫrvar comes from a long line of sailors. His family has been sailing the seas since time immemorial, and he has spent his whole life following in their footsteps. He has two sons and a wife. He has one blind eye, and is 6'2 with broad shoulders. He has a bald spot at the top of his head and long blonde hair, dulled by time, and a longer beard. He has a wise, yet cheerful and friendly personality, and will protect his friends until death.

Viking: Sweyn Rarcor
Age:27
Gender: male
Preferred Weapon: knives: both for throwing and melee Round shield: used to obviously defend and mostly to bash people. It has dried blood all over it and a cross on it.
Background: Sweyn grew up the son of a blacksmith father and warrior mother. Most of his life he followed in his fathers foot steps as his apprentice of sorts but eventually tried his way in battle like his mother. First day in battle he was gravely wounded and left on the battle field when his brothers were forced to retreat. He was thought to be dead by the enemy and was left but luckily he was able to recover in the town that had been ransacked by the enemy who fought against him. Sweyn returned home though he didn't go to his family due to him being in shame of not perishing or even fighting much on the battle field. When he heard about the ruler and the gold he jumped for the opportunity to regain the respect he had lost in battle with the blades he crafted with his father and the shield that his mother used. He is smaller than most standing at 5'7 and has black hair along with a small beard to go with it. He's also fairly fat though not overly.

Name: Arne Thorbrandsson, known throughout the world as “Farfar Arne Skalle” (Grandfather Arne the bald).
Age: 57.
Gender: Male

Weapons and equipment: One bearded axe, one longsax, a round shield, a knife, a bow and a quiver containing twelve arrows of Arne’s own design.

Background: Arne was born is today’s Sweden and spent his youth as an adventurer. He has seen things that most people can only dream about. He has been all the way east to the edge of the Rus’ lands, south all the way to the Arabs, where he has served as a Varjang. He has fought in many battles and claims to have seen the valkyries come for the brave dead after the battle.

Now he mostly just sit at home, tend to his little patch of earth or looks after the kids so that their parents can work. He has always loved kids and his only regret in life is that he never found time to find himself a good woman and get some kids of his own.

He is almost completely bald with only a few grey, almost white hairs left on his neck. Above his clear blue eyes sits two big, bushy eyebrows and on his chin a magnificent beard which he always keeps clean and well-brushed. His face is wrinkled with age and he has quite a big, red nose. The nose is pretty much the only part of his body with some color on it. His recent duties have cemp him indoors and so his skin is fair, almost pale.

Arne is known to brag a lot and has a very sharp tongue. His biggest flaw is that he can’t really face the fact that his days of glory are long gone.

He has a long and eventful life behind him, once he was known far and wide for his strength and skill with both axe and sword. Now he is and old man and most of his strength has left him, but he still has a few tricks left.

Viking Name: Eykatla Ægleifsdottir. She goes by Katla.

Gender: Female
Preferred Weapon: Katla own and use a spear, a light javelin, a round wooded shield and a bearded axe. (I guess you could also count her rune pouch in here if you wish to be really technical about it.)
Quick Background: Katla was born in what would later become Gotland, to a family that had gotten exceedingly wealthy from trade. Her father, who had wished for a son to represent the family for many years, gave up on his wish as Katla became his no less than seventh daughter, instead raising her as he would've raised a boy. With six older sisters, she didn't have to worry about any political marriages, and was raised to be as adept with the axe and shield as she was in strategy, trade, and traditional woman tasks - and that in addition to the craft of magic, which, being a woman, she could practice without being socially frowned upon. It was a disciplined upbringing, and she was raised not to be somebodys future wife, but the head of the family once her father had passed into old age. Her sisters had no quarrels with that, given that their childhoods had been groomed into a very different direction from Katlas.

For several years now, Katla have traveled back and forth to her home in Visby and faraway in between, having covered much of western Europe on her fathers order, as Ægleif wishes her to see the real price of trade which is paid not in gold but in bloodshed and political squabbles. Before very long, she is expected to return to Gotland to take up her fathers duties, and she suspects this might be the last time she ever sails if she is to obey her fathers wishes. Not entirely sure what to think of that, katla have decided to simply enjoy the raid and make the most of it as long as she can.
