XCOM: The Shape of Things to Come

OOC

RP Overview:
This Roleplay takes place in the XCOM: Enemy Unknown Alternate Universe, following an alien invasion and subsequent two-year war in which Humanity is victorious. If you are unfamiliar with XCOM, don't worry! This all takes place years after, and little to no knowledge of the game itself is required. In fact, most information regarding the world itself and how it differs is explained in the Prologue (below).

Essentially, this RP boils down to a conflict between individuals who are able to access key parts of their brains (and thus perform otherwise impossible feats) — Psychics — and the rest of the world. Out of fear, the very world governments that harnessed their gift to win the war plan to segregate, isolate, and — potentially — exterminate the Psychics, due to the threat they pose to the balance of power. Players will take the role of a Psychic, caught up in the struggle.

With this, I'd like to examine the concepts of human oppression and segregation, as well as what would ensue when a group must start a revolution not for power, but for survival. So is there any interest in this? Any suggestions or questions are more than welcome!

This seems interesting. A win the war but lose the peace scenario. I'll be watching for this. I am also quite familiar with XCOM, both old and new.

I love XCOM, and have always wondered what the released tech at the end of the game would do to the world. Definitely interested

Awesome! I'm glad there's some interest.

A question for you guys: Are you at all familiar with the expansion (Enemy Within)? If so, do you think we should include the things from that in this RP? Specifically, I'm talking about the introduction of MECs and genetically modified soldiers, who would also be caught up in this struggle.

I've completed the original XCOM and Terror from the Deep. Of course I am familiar with the expansion (I have played waaaaaay too much XCOM since I love the idea of the world teaming up to save themselves). I think gene mods and definitely MECs would be much more well accepted than Psionics. MECs and Genetic soldiers are humans plus mods. Psionics are born different, and can attack you in ways you can't imagine, so worthy of much more fear.

I concur. MECs should be seen as equals as they are technically tantamount to amputees. Gene therapy exists in the real world and perhaps the findings can be used to treat disease such as muscular problems and even heart disease.

Okay! I definitely agree on that part: Psychics would still be the persecuted ones, and it likely would not he humans vs. everyone else.

However, I'd also limit the number of MECs in the Roleplay (and in the in-game world) to a small handful. The process involves amputating all appendages and connecting you to a large armored suit, and as this takes place merely five years after the end of the war (and the discovery of that tech) I would say that the only "true MECs" are former XCOM-operatives, and the process of less extreme augments on the civilian population is still in a rather rudimentary stage.

I wouldn't say limiting some characters is much of a problem, we are hardly flooded with players here

Noted! I'm going to wait for at least two more people to express interest before creating a CS template and the OOC, so if you guys know anyone who would be interested in getting in on this shindig, let them know!

RIP Brett Sharpe, king of redshirts...
Commander Brett Sharpe in the original blew up Cydonia
Captain Brett Sharpe was the first into T'leth, but was critically wounded on the mission. He lived, but did not finish the mission :'(
The chosen one, he sacrificed himself for all humanity, and will be mourned by colleagues, squad mates and family. Reports say he went out muttering "Bastards," he will be missed as a leader and as a person
