[OOC] The Halfway House

In the City of Claires, the prison population is overflowing, and it sucks. What sucks even more is when you're let out, finding your way to one of a dozen halfway houses that litter the town, from the inner city to the suburban outskirts. What sucks the most however, is trying to get into one when you're a Myth. Only a few generations have passed wince mythical creatures "Came out" to the general public, and boy has the public had a hard time adjusting. Prejudice abound, incarceration rates high, and little is given to this overwhelming majority that (at least they feel like) they are fundamentally other. Most halfway houses will find some way or another to deny access to the myths coming out of prison, so there are many that are homeless.

That is, unless you can get to the only myth-specific halfway house.

Called "The Oasis" by a few of the former criminals, its a two story halfway house run by a human woman who ends up acting like its a bed and breakfast, but with job help and therapy and other things a halfway house [i]should[/s] provide. According to her, at least.

Here's hoping that with enough support and courage, The myths that leave are better than when they arrived

The Rules of the Halfway House

These rules are framed up ear the front door, and the woman that runs the place goes over them each time a new person comes to live there.

In no particular order:

- No fighting or violence of any kind. This includes verbal arguments. Take it outside, and away from prying eyes

- You do not pay any sort of rent for the duration of your parole, but if you do get a job, at least 20 dollars from every paycheck goes to help pay for everything the house provides (Food, electricity, water, ect)

- No curses, magic, or use of superhuman abilities allowed in the house. There is a myth-friendly gym down the street. If you must let out any steam, please go there!

- If you have any problems or questions at all, please come to me. I'm here to help!

- This is no place for children for a variety of reasons, but if you have a child and want them to come visit, please let me know at least a day in advance.

- No loud music or sounds after 9 PM

- No Alcohol or smoking in the house

- Be kind to each other. You are all in the same place in life, and we all deserve some kindness

A: By law, anything bigger than the average human has to use charms and law-regulated magic to maintain a human-esque form.

Name: Karaiyah (Kai) Ramos
Age: 22
Appearance:
Background: Her mother was a Siren, and her father a sailor. The classic tail. (I'm awful) Her father got her mother pregnant while she was in human form, and abandoned her as soon as Karaiyah was born. A bit afraid of commitment, apparently. She grew up for the first 15 years of her life with her mother in the ocean, living a life as normal for a Siren as it gets. She was happy, and loved. Naturally, no interesting story stays happy like that. A couple of fishermen unhappy with the presence of Myths in human culture murdered her mother, a harpoon through the gut. Karaiyah then decided to migrate to land and try to integrate with the rest of society, letting as few people as possible know of her Myth nature. Her life was average from then on too, until committed the crime detailed below. She was sent to prison, served her sentence without incident, and now lives in the Halfway House with the other Myths.

Personality: Although sweet and caring, Kariayah is very opinionated and not afraid to speak her mind if she thinks you're doing something or saying something that disrespects someone else unwarranted. She loves her friends, and will defend anyone who needs it to the death. Though she's confrontational, she's very forgiving and if you fight with her she'll likely pretend it never happened if you're in distress. However, if you ever upset someone or are disrespectful she does not tolerate it and will either call you out or punch you out. Not to mention she's flirty to a fault, and will flirt with anyone. Boy, girl, people and Myths who are neither boy or girl. Once in a relationship, though, she's the most loyal and affectionate woman you'll ever meet.

What type of mythical creature are you?
I'm a Siren. Absolutely hate it, too. I try to avoid singing around people whenever possible, but sometimes I need to just get away from everyone for awhile, be in the water, and sing quietly so nobody can hear. It's a good stress reliever. While in my Siren form, I look like any other mermaid, but apparently exceedingly beautiful. (Scoff.) My tail is teal as is my hair, and really the only difference between my human form and Siren form is the tail and the fact that I'm naked.
What Crime did you commit?

Trigger warning for rape

Murder. Long story short, I caught a man trying to rape a little girl. Got 5 years, since it technically wasn't self defense but I know I did the right thing. I wouldn't do anything different, given the chance.

How long where you in prison?
5 years.

A week. Tried to avoid everyone else until today, figured I had to say hi and decide who I like and who I do not at some point.

Leslie Irvine

NAME: Leslie Irvine
AGE: 19

APPEARANCE:
As pictured. Leslie is fairly short at only 5'6” with cloudy, tired eyes and dark hair cut unevenly. His most interesting features in his human form are his pointed ears unsuccessfully hidden by his hair and his sharp teeth shown often in a wicked smirk.

All Cat Sith share a similar transformation – a mundane black house cat, if only slightly larger than average, with a white spot on its chest.

BACKGROUND:
Leslie grew up in a particularly impoverished family, with a mother barely healthy enough to work who chose not to and an absentee father who provided through various odd jobs and back-alley drug dealing – at least, until he was arrested. As the oldest of three children, Leslie sought to fill up that empty spot as the provider at age thirteen, falling in with a bad but undeniably lucrative crowd.

As the police began to capture each and every one of his former friends (some of which were done through his anonymous tips), Leslie felt his earnings grow larger and larger until he became a local name – an infamous one. Disowned by his family but rolling in dosh, it was only when he turned seventeen that his luck began to run out. Despite numerous attempts to 'go clean' from crime for his tearful mother, none of them worked, and he was arrested for good only a year later.

PERSONALITY:
Leslie is narcissistic in every sense of the word – arrogant, selfish, unsympathetic and often insufferable for each and all of the above. Despite considering himself 'independent' and refusing help aggressively if ever it is offered, he is lazy and unmotivated, opting not to do anything with his life now that he can lounge in front of a fireplace all day free of charge. He is, however, fairly intelligent, especially when it comes to cunning and trickery. With sarcastic wit and manipulative intent, it's not surprising he's never had to (legally) work a day in his life – he can charm his way into the homes of the gullible easily.

WHAT TYPE OF MYTHICAL CREATURE ARE YOU?
“I am a Cat Sith, and no – you've probably never heard of it. In short, I'm a supposed stealer of souls, a king amongst cats and the bane of dairy farmers everywhere; a distant cousin of the fairy kind – hence the pointed ears – that can turn into a cat at will.

I might as well not be a Myth, to be honest, for all the good it's done me. We got the short end of the stick when it comes to mystical powers and all that rot. Worst I can do is curse cattle not to give any milk at all.”

WHAT CRIME DID YOU COMMIT?
“Well... They got me on theft and burglary – with a little footnote that says possession of illegal narcotics – but they added a whole host of charges when they arrested me. I'm allowed to act out against police brutality, right? Well, that's what I did, with a crime of public indecency added. The only thing I'm sorry for is that some little kids had to see me moon the officer in the square. That was uncalled for.”

HOW LONG WERE YOU IN PRISON?
“I've been in jail a couple of times, a few days each, but most recently I went away for six months... which got upped to seven. 'Solitary confinement for your own safety,' they said. 'I've got a very punch-able face,' they said. I'm out now – that's all that matters.”

HOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED AT THE OASIS?
“A month – long enough to be known as the slacker without any future, but not long enough to be kicked out for doing nothing. That's just how I like it.”

Sorcha

(Commonly wears dark clothing, and has a full humanoid body)

Background: Sorcha has been alone most of her life, and doing he best to avoid interaction with anyone. Only talking to creatures like cats or the occasional scorpion. She got by in terms of food by "eating" anything that was unattended/unsupervised and any freshly thrown away food she could find. She also followed a life style similar to that of nomads, never staying in one place for more than a week. She had moved around the city quite a number of times before she was arrested.

Personality: Sorcha is shy, irritable, and kind hearted. She tries her best to make friends, but her shyness holds her back from initiating conversations. Making her wait for someone to come along and talk to her, and hopefully become friends with her.

She's a big softie for cats, and scorpions. Also loves sweets, but will "eat" just about anything.

What type of mythical creature are you?
A slime, isn't it obvious? I don't like wearing clothes but humans are so finicky over this stuff, almost got arrested for it too. And before you ask, yes, slimes can get arrested. I don't know how they do it either. They must have some special cuffs that don't allow us to change our form to escape or something.

What Crime did you commit?
Destruction of property. I was really hungry and not thinking straight...so I kind of "ate" someones porch furniture. It was delicious mind you. Oh and they also gave me a loitering charge, a vandalism charge, attempted murder, and resisting arrest. I won't deny the resisting arrest charge, but I didn't do the other three, I mean it, I really didn't do anything to get those other charges.

How long where you in prison?
I think my sentence was about 7 years? I don't remember.

Are you looking forward to being at Oasis?
No. But its the only place I can go.

Name: Juniper Brizo

Age: 26

Personality: Jealous easily. Feisty. Sarcastic. Loves to Swim. Virtuoso. Manipulative.

Background: Juniper came from a long descendant line of strong women. A line of women that caught the eye of many a sailor and brought him to his watery grave. It wasn't that the clan of various colors of the red spectrum hated men, it was just that they hadn't yet found a human who was fitting.

That was until Juniper met Ben. Ben was her idea of perfection. They had met when she took leave from the water on the eve of her 16th birthday. He was a beach babe, and the two intertwined almost instantly. Many days and nights were spent by the beach, getting kissed by the sun as well as one another.

Juniper was 20 years old when she first noted the different scents, the undergarments that didn't belong to her, the late night secret phone calls. He was cheating on her. The light of her life had been snuffed out by a bitch with a part time job at the crab shack. Sure she could have just left and gone back to the sea to the comforts of home, but she couldn't do that after bragging so boldly about Ben- the human that was different from all the rest.

It didn't take but a week for her to plan out his murder, and the rest was history.

But it was more like a civic duty to the community. The asshole deserved it didn't he? You can't just go around using girls like they are some fragile little dandelion in the wind and not expect some consequences. So I drugged his dinner that night, he was knocked out like a rock! Fitting for a dumb ass, ain't it? Then I brought him into the tub and turned that sucker on full blast. I planned on leaving him and that God forsaken apartment anyways, and bonus points for me since the lease was under his name and not mine. Turns out the guy can really handle his drugs, ending up waking up before he could drown.

Next time I'll use cement blocks.

How long where you in prison? 6 years. I got off pretty easily, considering it was my first crime.

Are you looking forward to being at Oasis? Well, It's better than being in prison.

I need my freedom. It might be nice to have a place that is more welcoming to my type as well, you only can hear a joke about smelling like fish between your legs so many times before you just want to strangle someone.

Background: Married at 21 and widowed at 22, Marisol's lived a rather hard-knock life. Her husband (A Tengu) died as a result of anti-Myth violence shortly after they married, and the depression and stress of the grief caused her to miscarry her child. But with that tragedy came a hard resolve. Over the course of a six month period, she sold her old assets and opened up Oasis, filing proper papers and announcing it publicly as a myth specific halfway house to help ex-cons on probation off of their feet and off the streets. In the last year and a half of her running the place it has a great reputation among ex-con mythical creatures, and has helped improve human-myth relations, though there seems to be something working under the surface. She's also suffered from tuberculosis - twice, and has weak lungs because of it. When she goes into the city she often has to wear a light mask so that the polluted air doesn't cloud her lungs

Personality: Kindest soul you will ever meet, its a shock she's single. But don't take that kindness as an excuse to push her over. Push her and you will be shoved back. She takes no shit or anything lying down. She will get in your face, she will call you out on your shit, but never without a damn good reason. Her kind nature and genuine want to help others has assisted her many a time, but the lengths she's willing to go for the myths under her roof can often get her in dire straights.
