To be fair, a lot of people in the US believe in Gods and Angels... how surprised are they going to be to find our that they were right... but had the wrong gods?

In the lore of the newer Avenger and Thor movies, they made it out like are like Gods but not actual THE Gods. That is something that would make sense to prevent clash with world religions.
