One of the most hated and feared beings throughout the nine realms, the trolls lived as small nomadic tribes, wandering throughout Asgard, Vaneheim, Jotunheim, and Svartalfheim. The Magzi, the most feral tribe of trolls, had been temporarily settled in the realm of Asgard when they raided a group of travelling merchants. A bloody massacre followed, with the trolls tearing down their prey with ease. One life however was spared. The tribe’s chief, H’roth, took one of the merchants, a young woman prisoner. She would have been happier to have been killed in the attack, due to H’roth deciding to make her one of his many “wives”. Nine months later, the woman gave birth to a child. H’roth’s daughter. Unfortunately the woman died shortly after giving birth.
The child, despite her Asgardian looks, was raised by the Magzi due to her heritage. Over the years, the girl grew into a feral beast, clothing herself in the skin of a dead troll and using nothing but her teeth and strength to hunt with the rest of her tribe, feasting on the carcass anything they caught; animal or Asgardian.
She, along with numerous other Magzi Trolls, were soon apprehended by the mighty Odinson, who after discovering that she was part Asgardian, brought her back to the city of Asgard. Here, the Asgardian’s gave her the name Gunna, after her mother. They also tried to introduce her to Asgardian culture, as well as somehow wipe the teachings of the Magzi from her mind. They were met with little success, with Gunna, nicknamed Troll by the guards, attacking any who came near her. While the Odinson and the rest of the Asgardians refused to give up, she began to receive fewer tutoring sessions, as well as being kept in the Asgard dungeon.
On the dawn of Ragnarok, several inmates of the dungeon who had heard or sensed the coming end, architected a grand breakout of the facility. Gunna, was led by a mixed group of rogue Asgardians and Dark Elves out of the dungeon, with the group passing through the armoury on their way. Here, they sought to retrieve their equipment, as well any additional weapons they could use for their escape. During this time, Gunna began to inquisitively explore the armoury, with her soon discovering Jarnbjorn, the Odinson’s former weapon. Drawn to the power of the battle axe, Gunna claimed it as her own, before continuing with her escape with the group, with them travelling through a hidden portal in the Asgardian mountains.
Strangely, Gunna was later discovered by a group of Ravagers on a distant planet, located near Knowhere, the ancient severed head of a Celestial, as well as the home of the Collector’s infamous museum. The Ravagers, finding Gunna sleeping among the eaten bodies of her fellow escapees, decided to capture her, selling her into the Collector’s collection on Knowhere. Here she encountered the Collector himself, as well as another one of his keepsakes; a dog from the planet Earth named Cosmo. During their times in the museum, Cosmo began to communicate with a reluctant Gunna through the use of telepathy, an ability the animal gained after experimentation from the Collector. Gunna soon went through similar experimentations herself, with her receiving a Translation Implant.
During her time among the Collector’s collection, Gunna soon began to warm to Cosmo and the way he spoke to her in her head. She became more calm, as well as her learning to see the animal as more than simple prey.
That was when the Kree attacked, practically destroying Knowhere and the Collector’s museum. Luckily, Cosmo and Gunna were some of the few survivors of the attack, with the two managing to get free from their holding cells. They managed to find refuge in a secure sector of the Knowhere station, where they watched their former prison, the Collector’s museum, burn to the ground. Using his telepathic abilities, Cosmo accessed the mind of their attackers, with him learning that this attack had merely been a means for them to retrieve a powerful weapon. A weapon which they planned to use to attack the planet Xandar!
Cosmo, along with Gunna who wanted to remain with her new fuzzy friend, decided that it was up to them to stop them. Forming the Guardians of Knowhere after the arrival of X-51, a spectacular machine man from the planet Earth, the three ventured in X-51’s ship, The Shockwave Rider, to Xandar, with the heroes seeking to stop the carnage.
