The only reason why he was stuck with the irregulars was because unlike the rest of the Kuriba clan his methods of acquiring his ingredients - especially the meat - are rather dubious. Members of this clan are naturally born with extra strength and famous for its great shipwrights. Sadly though a clan with this great skill and power didn't last forever. Many pirates heard of the Strauss clan and confronted the clan demanding them to join their crews. As a clan build on pride they all refused the offers and was instantly sluatered were they stood. Levi's parents manage to save him and shipped him away from their island. Info you want to add: Since Levi doesn't use weapons he wears a thin protective gear under his clothes to protect he from bullets and a few sharp objects. He's also very skilled in hand-to-hand combat so if he unarms you ,you might as well surrender.
