Aery got it. "The assassins... But why would they follow me? You, I understand. But not me. I'm too fragile, too frail, to ever win their respect." As they walked back to the group she said... "Celaena, the people who... took us... Their plot, to assassinate the Adarlan royals... They can't have done it, could they have?" Out of the corner of her eye she saw one of her urchin messengers, waving his hands to get her attention.
"Somethin' crazy be happenin', Aery! Th' new people in town, they came in an' hundreds o' them an' they go' inna the castle, an... I dunno wha's happenin', on'y, it's crazy an' there aren' any guards in th' city anymore, an all these new people are jus' taken everythin' they please, an' Liza, she thinks that's acoz they all been killed, an' I dunno, but they be startin' to try t' hunt down the rest o' us urchins!"
The boy wasn't making any sense. "Hold on, Axel. Calm yourself, buddy, and tell me one thing at a time. New people in town. Did they look like soldiers?"
"Nay, like mercenaries. Bristlin' with daggers, th' lot o' em. Cold-eyed, like yer lady." He indicated Celaena with a wave of his hand. "Meanin' no disrespect, m'lady."
Aery's eyebrows rose. "They went into the castle. Did something seem off about it?"
"Aye, mum. The dangerous people went t' the castle an' the guards didn' make a fuss, not 'till they'd all gotten inside. An' it didn't seem like alarm shouts, more scared-like en that."
Aery looked at Celaena. "So, wait, did Liza say that it was like all the guards, or like all the new people, were dead? You're confusing me, buddy."
"Sorry, mum. She said tha' she thought th' guards were dead, acoz all the new people came out an' started just takin' food from the merchants, an' then some nobles tried t' leave, an' the new people.... shot 'em... when they got near the wall. Every last one o' them. Even the littles, an' some o' them were still in they mum's arms."
