Map of Osetia

I see what you did there... Kerbin.

Other than calling your reference, I'm quite interested in this RP concept, so I will put up a claim and a nation sheet shortly for your viewing pleasure. Should it be posted here or in the character tab?

Post it where you wish, though do look through the pages to see what has been taken, as I don't have a computer and can't make a map of all claims yet.

I'm still working on the NS, but I'd like to make it known that I'm putting up a claim on the land north of Yllendthyr. If someone could tell me how you all made those cool map borders, that would be very helpful.

Behold your USSR.

The People's Republic of Kataylabinsk (or PRK for short)

This is my preliminary claim, let me know if I'm overstepping on anything. I'm going to be going for a technologically advanced and industrialized (for the time period, so like 1940) but low population nation of various species that is attempting to foment worldwide revolution both actively and passively by presenting an image of itself as a worker's paradise where all races can get along. In reality, it will be more authoritarian.

@Raijinslayer
I just used Paint and drew lines.

Unlike yours, however, I intend for Kataylabinskian technological advances to be chemical rather than industrial in nature. Greek fire, chlorine and mustard gas, helium airships, and potentially V-2 esque primitive missiles.

Definitely very different fields, though that's not to say there isn't dabbling in non-industrial/military fields. Even with the dabbling though, breakthroughs and such won't be happening in the chemical/biological field in Eisenkreis. Nor will there be any kind of aviation or naval advancements. The only state of the Hegemony that even has a navy is Kzechverin, and it's woefully outdated.

I pretty much used the pencil tool of Photoshop but really, you can just use Paint on your computer for the same effect.
We carefully drew these lines by hand and the use of a mouse. Nothing complex about it.
As for drawing borders I suggest using your common sense.
Country limits are typically drawn at natural borders. Large bodies of water, thin crossings or mountain chains all offer such use. Also try to make the borders look less orderly because otherwise it'd loose its sense of authenticity.
That's all.
Oh and check all previous territory claims and try to make sure your claim won't overlap with those.

Greek fire is a pretty common knowledge by this period.
Production of mustard gas and its derivatives are also actually an important step for industry so pretty much any up-to-date nation should have them.
As for the last two, my nation is among the leaders in aviation and rocket technology.
I didn't plan to steal your thunder. I just tell you the current status with this game.
Of course you can be the leader in chemistry but you need to think on other developments. Nappalm instead of greek fire, nerve agents as poisons and being the world-leading nation in helium production can help to establish that.
I leave the rest to you.
BTW, there are a number of nations with airships in this setting so if you produce the most helium you can fill your pockets with that business pretty well. By just plain memory there are at least 3 nations who would buy it from you, including mine.

@MihndarAlsl, my nation will probably be your technological competitor when it comes to chemical stuff, as that was goinh to my nation's specialty as well.

The chemical formula for greek fire has been lost to time, actually, so nobody truly knows what it was made of and the nations of this RP probably don't have napalm yet, considering the first synthetic napalm was developed in 1942 and that is rather late.
Just an example. I'm mainly meaning that we're going to be moving towards more chemical-based weaponry, and potentially might invent something like VX as the RP goes on, with all the ethical ramifications therein.
Well then we're another leader, that's simple to resolve.
Fair enough.

I'll probably think of another creative technological thing to throw in to differentiate our nations a bit.

AFAIK, Greek Fire i nothing but a mixture of raw oil and natural gases. There's no chemical formula to it whatsoever, more like a a procedure done to oil and that's it.
As for Nappalm or such, just because historically it was developed two years later it doesn't mean you could not have that a bit earlier in a fantasy setting.

As for differentiating our nations, it'll be easy. Yllendthyr is an elven empire with a considerable portion of them being pointy eared and with the old tradition to ride griffins. I also use a nerfed-down mithril instead of steel in practically anything.
We'll be pretty different anyways.
I'm just trying to help you to make your nation truly the leader in chemistry.

Well, I don't know if anybody has noticed but I've been adding a bit to my my nation sheet each day. It's now done except for the sections on history and the military.

As far as the military goes I must admit that I'm actually pretty ignorant as to what tactics and technology should be like given this time period, which is making me have a somewhat difficult time writing out the military sections.

I'd say that I have a really good understanding of history and warfare up about through the Napoleonic Era, but if asked to talk about the 20th century all I'd be able to say is that trench warfare was a thing and armored vehicles and airplanes started showing up. Oh, and some chemical weapons. Actually, if we're around 1940 wouldn't atomic bombs be just a short ways off as well?

This is a pressing issue to me as well.

I threw up some nation sheet stuff on the character tab, I'll probably refine it and finish it by tomorrow sometime.

Use google for various WW2 military terms, I think with a hour or maybe half an hour "research" you can get a rough idea on wars.
Memories of you playing Call of Duty or any WW2 themed videogame could help, too.
Same with films.
Really, while you don't become an expert, writing WW2 combat scenes is somewhat easy because you get so exposed to it through the various entertainment mediums.
In addition this is technically the first world war for this setting. So many countries would actually think of warfare as if it were from the Napoleonic times. Things may change though as they face the hard truth with the new technologies altering military doctrines forever.

As for atomic power or nuclear bombs, yeah, they were in development. The first nuclear reactor was built in 1942, IIRC. And after the magnitude of nuclear power will be proven there'll be likely scientists who propose the idea of using this for a bomb like it was in our history. Then again nuclear bombs are one of the "big no" category items in such RPs. Just like firearms in medieval fantasy. And unlike ban on guns which is an overreaction due to popularized but incorrect historic knowledge, atomic bombs were indeed a huge gamechanger and they are pretty much the OP category for roleplaying balance purposes. So I can see the GM saying that nukes are banned, or they are forbidden until something really major happens.
On the other hand I hope she will reconsider the ban on jet fighters. The first jet planes were made pretty much in the 40s and could've developed even sooner. I can easily see them as a "mid-season upgrade". Besides jet fighters aren't that different from typical airplanes during this time aside from the fact jet engines are stronger and allow considerably faster speeds.

@MihndarCommunist elves...
Now I've seen everything.

@Willy Vereb

Hmm, my Kerbal Space Program knowledge lets me know that jets engines are effing awesome and can run for really long times. I think the lack of jet planes is to prevent OP air forces from flying across the hemisphere, bombing the crap out of something, and then coming back. Aircraft carriers were around by this time, though.

And seeing as my nation just lags behind the rest of the world, I was going to try to go for an American Civil War-esque situation, with shiny weapons that they just began to import, but antiquated tactics. Of course this will be leading to horrendous casualties until they figure out how to effectively use their new technology.

So I guess tactics don't matter to me so much as what would be reasonable to have in terms of weapons. Voltus set a somewhat high standard. I mean, look at how specific this is:

"The vessel is also equipt with 12 40mm cannons , 6 in the front on swiveling mount for 360 degree fire, 2 on either side and 2 on the back. It's speed and light weight allows it to speed along side larger boats and shoot at it point blank..."

I guess the obvious solution is for me to just be a bit more vague when describing stuff that I don't know very much about.

Tomorrow I think I'm going to finally get around to doing my history section in the sheet as well. I know what's going on with Yamatai and I think Voltus and I have a rough idea, but @Mihndar do you want to have some history too?

Specifically, two things popped out to me about your sheet:

"...it contains large minorities of various different races... and small numbers of Tinites."

and

"an extensive spy network to support worker's revolutionary movements in other countries"

Incidentally, mine has the little quip:

"In the past Tin has also vigorously fought to push its faith into other countries, and where they succeeded the converts often rebelled and served as spies for the Tin, which has only thrown fuel onto the fire in this situation."

You can probably see where this is going. I think that we could work something out of this, if you want.
