Either way, I'd be much more comfortable if the new character was more one over another (speedster or strength). If you make him more of a fighter then we can leave all the long swords (katakana included), and if more of a speedster, the long and cumbersome weapons just don't make sense. Especially given his age. He needs to be able to move about freely, and carrying so much that he could supply the whole team- it doesn't work for me. As for his spells, everyone here will tell you, I am a fan of simple. If you choose to go in the direction of mage, I want you to sort out the most relevant, the most necessary spells that he would need. I didn't ask this for Regina, mostly because, as I said, I found a balance there. I may have over looked a few things. Perhaps by accident, but as she's been portayed so far, I haven't seen any issues.
I'm just looking for balance and a sense of realism. That's pretty much the most important thing when I consider a character.
