Magic is dead (or so it is believed) and has been for many years since the rise of steam engines and clock work. Now is the time of progress and innovation and many people have benefited from the changes that have been made, and some have not.
For those that have benefited, grand parties and Masquerades are common and are indeed expected. All nobles through one or two a year and they each try to out do each other. But none are as grand or as sought after as Lord Nixus's Masquerades. The party is only held once a year and only a select few are invited.
Those invited flaunt their invitations to friends and enemies alike, showing off their importance. Not many know why people fight for this invitation or why Lord Nixus is so important, maybe because it's Lord Nixus is shrouded in mystery. The young lord is said to be handsome and very rich, which shows in his large estate and château. Very few people have actually met the young lord, as he never attends his own Masquerades. He does beckons on a few to meet him in his study, and those that have met him confirm and deny the rumors that spread about the Lord. But these nobles seemed different, as if changed.
This brings on new rumors, as these once vibrant young nobles become withdrawn and private, and after a year or so they disappear without a trace. Many say that these young people were always troubled and deserved what ever they got, while others say that they ran off with a lower classed dirt eater which brought shame on the family so they faked their disappearance. But some of these nobles have found dead with their throats slit or their chests ripped open, these deaths are blamed on the lower classes and thought of no more.
No one truly see's Lord Nixus hand in all of this and he plans to keep it that way, as if people found out what he was they would run him out or worse. No, he will keep his secrets and his.......... pets.
...................
You are a young noble who has recently been invited to the coveted Masquerade held by Lord Nixus. You are excited and flaunt your invitation to anyone who will listen. This will hopefully boost your family's standing in society and bring much needed business, what would be better though would be to meet the Lord and strike a business deal.
You have heard the rumors but they are simply rumors spread by fickle and easily spooked people. You don't believe them and call those that spread the rumors jealous of your importance.
On the night of the Grand Masquerade, you dress in your finest and head to the mysterious château. Upon arrival you're breath taken by the grandeur and beauty of the estate, but once entering the château's ballroom you are greeted by fire eaters, acrobats, dancers, and live statues. The food and drinks are both familiar and exotic. Exotic animals in pure gold and silver cages dot the grand ballroom. The room itself is adorned in fine silks, velvets and lace. The walls hold exotic paintings of half naked men, women and monsters, and gold leafed columns. Nothing seems too extravagant for the Lord!
When you remember to breath, you start to mingle as it come naturally to you. As the night wears there is no sign of the Lord and you don't you will get to see him, but just you think this you are tapped on the shoulder. You turn to see a modestly dressed young woman wearing a plain golden mask, "The Master has shown interest in you, he wishes to see you in his study. If you will follow me." The young woman says with a small smile. You feel honored and smile smugly at the person you were talking to before following the girl.
The young woman leads you up the stairs and down many halls each with walls painted in exotic scenes, but you notice that these scenes grow more and more disturbing the deeper you go into the château. After what seems like forever you enter a large room adorned with rich, dark mahogany book shelves, a large stone fireplace with a roaring fire ablaze within. The fire casts eerie shadows around the room, the only other light coming from the large window at the end of the room which allowed the light of the moon to enter.
That's when you see a slender but powerful figure stand from, what you think, is a leather chair. "Welcome, I hope you are enjoying the masque." Says the figure with a voice as smooth a silk and as rich as honey. You nod unable to speak at first as the man walked towards you, but stops short. "Come closer so I may see you." He says and you feel compelled to move and to do as he asks.
Once in front of him, he smiles. "Perfect." He says before looking over your shoulder and nodding to his servant. You hear the click of the door as it shuts, but your eyes remain on the man before you.
The man looks at you again but his once beautiful features seem to melt away and it's replaced with a crazed eyes and smile. He utters words you have never heard before, before he places his hand on your forehead. You feel your head burn before falling to the floor.
"Aw, you are awake. Good, I was hoping you would survive. Anyway I hope you enjoy your stay as you will be staying for a while." You can see a smirk cross his face, before you realize that you are laying on something cold and hard. As you look around you realize you are in a cage set in a stone. As fear, panic and anger surge through, you begin to notice something within wanting out. "It's best not to hold onto that monster within for too long. It will cause you pain." The man says before laughing and walking away.
As pain grows within you, you wonder what has happened. But once the pain grows to much to bare you let whatever wants out happen, and to your horror you begin to change. You morph until you become a monster, one told in stories to scare children.
You are now a new addition to Lord Nixus's army of monsters. You are his pawn that he uses against other wizards and witches. You must do as he commands or risk pain of death, but it becomes known that the more you change into your monster form the more you lose your humanity. But the power of the change is addicting. There are a few trying to find a way to cure the curse put upon them.
The question is will you try to find a cure while still doing the will of Lord Nixus or will you allow the darkness within rule you?
