Since people have the whole quest, map and vats then yes I would assume you would have inventory. And Xenonia I dont know how to reply to your character.

You could probably start by either apologizing and assuaging Jerry's concerns about stealing in an emergency, or you could blow off his concerns and demonstrate that the vault's continued survival hinges on the availability of necessary resources. Really, it's a tossup between idealism and utilitarianism.

I'm hoping to get away from VATS if possible as well as the whole Pipboy quests and inventory. I feel like that's more video gamish and if this was real life, the only real use for Pipboys would be the radio, time, and Vault messages. So aside from radio and having a clock, the pipboy would be useless in the Wastes.

It's canon that the Pip-Boy (extending back to even the 2000) had map, motion sensor, geiger counter, and notetaking capabilities. Keep in mind that this is a device designed from the ground up to be the end-all be-all for utility purposes.

From what VATS has been shown as throughout the games, it's not a "stop time and Deadeye shoot the baddies", it's more of a targeting assistant that somehow takes an assessment of the situation (windspeed, shakiness of the user's arm, size of the target, properties of the weapon used) and gives a rough estimate of how likely you are to hit whatever target you're aiming at.

Just going by what's absolutely canon and not what's demonstrated through gameplay, I'd say the PipBoy would have:

  • A radiation monitor
  • An atomic clock
  • An electronic notepad (would act as a rudimentary questlog and inventory, though it wouldn't automatically update and it doesn't store objects in hyperspace)
  • A map (that you presumably have to draw in as you go)
  • A radio receiver
  • A biometric lock
  • A basic targeting system that basically just gives you a rough estimate of how likely you are to land a shot on a specific part of the enemy (VATS).
  • A built-in flashlight function
  • Possibly a mass spectrometer, for determining the nutrition and toxin content of food and water
  • Possibly a health monitor, for diagnosing injuries and diseases.

Of course, this model of the PipBoy could have all of that, some of that, or none of that, it's all up to @Vertical.

Name: Jolene Rivers
Age: 18
Gender: Female
Caste Ranking: Vault Citizen

Physical Appearance: Jolene is a girl of around average height for her age - 5'6, to be more specific. She's not especially skinny, but she isn't thick-set, either, having a balanced, lithe build that comes from eating her vegetables and carrying around books/medical equipment. Her skin is a fair, peachy shade, not pale, yet containing no tan due to staying in the vault, literally her entire life. Her hair is a strawberry blonde color, and being rather long, it's usually tied back into an efficient pony-tail, as to keep any strands from covering or irritating her eye. A black strip of cloth has effectively covered her left eye from the world. Jolene also typically wears her father's old lab coat over her Vault 24 jumpsuit, the lab coat holds some smaller medical supplies. It's mainly for avoiding any sort of infection whenever she's operating. As it used to belong to her father, Jolene holds it close to her heart.

Biography: Jolene was born to two high-ranking members of the Vault; The lead doctor, whom was her father, and a rather renowned chef of a mother - known for her Mole-Rate casseroles. As expected of her, she was naturally smart, putting her all into her studies and exams. Due to this, she skipped a grade earlier on in her life, which made her a bit of an outcast amongst the slightly older people of her class. In her other-wise stable environment, Jolene was a straight A student, and a person whom was expected to take on her father's old mantle - especially due to her interest in anatomy, and healing other people. Whether it was someone with a bruise, or someone whom had a bite from an invasive radroach, she was usually there with her mini-medkit in hand. This was rather cute when she was younger, and it grew to be impressive, as her knowledge on the matter developed alongside her body and mind. She didn't really care about the discrimination against refugees - Logic dictated that they had some radiation within them, but not enough to be lethal, or even contagious or dangerous to the other vault dwellers, so people pushing them away only made them look idiotic. Finally, the day came for her graduation, and the woman had full plans of celebrating with her parents, before heading over to the Medic-Bay to get situated with a new environment. A small incident in her childhood had forced her to don a cloth over her left eye - she doesn't like talking about it, and would change the subject whenever the topic came up. To this day, it's unknown to most people as to why her left eye is covered. Only her mother and father knows, along with the doctors of the vault. The incident is related to a Mole-Rat family escaping the kennels, however.

Work Test Results: She was assigned into the medical department, as a Surgeon, specializing in lacerations/puncture wounds.

Other: Skills - Medicine, Science, Energy Weapons, Explosives.

I'd say that all of what Evans said would be on the Pipboy, save for the targeting assist system. The reason behind not including that is I want the characters to be as exposed and vulnerable as possible. I also want more character development in the means of guns and what not. When the characters get out into the Wasteland they are going to eventually be greeted by raiders, super mutants, and other Waste-denizens that have had a lifetime of hard times to learn to shoot a gun and fight. And then we'll have a bunch of sheltered kids just thrown out into the mix. It'll be more fun that way, the characters will grow a lot more, and there will be a lot of learning experiences for the characters. So I mean by the time we get mid-way through the main plot, our characters will probably be hearty Wastelanders.

Larfleeze you are accepted. Go ahead and post. I hope you are caught up on the IC, if not, I can give you a quick run down.

I'm longtime Skype friends with Dan and Pink, and they gave me an extremely abridged version, but a recap from you would be great if you don't mind.

Alright. The characters all graduated from school and were in the process of either getting their job assignments, going to their jobs, or just hanging out. Dan's character accidentally set off a revolution between the Ref (refugees from the Wasteland that entered the Vault 50 years prior to the events of this RP) and the Vault-born Security Force. The Ref group down in the Living Quarters managed to kill off a large number of Security Force Officers and then proceeded to head up towards the Overseers' (there was 2 Overseers) Offices. Now while the revolution was happening, a breed of monsters appeared in the Vault (there is speculation as to how they appeared and I hinted at it twice, but there is no explanation other than they just got into the Vault somehow) and they started by killing the Overseers.

The Ref forces were almost entirely wiped out by these monsters and the, better armed, Security Forces are fighting the monsters but currently they are losing the battle. I believe that all of the characters have decided that it would be best to leave the Vault, for one reason or another, and they are now heading up towards the Vault entrance. As of now, no monsters have made their way up to the entrance because they are too busy slaughtering the rest of the Vault below.

So you could have your character come in really anywhere in the upper levels because the lower levels are just blood baths and filled with corpses from either the monsters or the civil war. I'll also give everyone a rundown on the casualties so far.

Ref casualties (including the Revolutionaries)
50+
70-80% of the Ref population is wiped out.

Vault Dweller casualties
60-70+
50-60% of the Vault-born Citizens are dead.

Vault Security Forces
6 are alive.

Monsters
Estimated 10-15 of them in the Vault.
2 are dead.
Numbers seemingly increasing as the battle goes on.

Hey I guess it's just an early reminder Dan that the actions of one character CAN affect the rest of the characters. Here is basically how things could have transpired differently.

Jack doesn't beat up the two Vault Dwellers. Security doesn't arrest him. A revolution does not start. Security has bigger numbers. The monsters attack. The Vault unifies to fight the monsters and wins and all is well because the Vault-born citizens realize that they couldn't have done it with out the Refs.

Or.

Jack doesn't beat up the two Vault Dwellers. Security doesn't arrest him. A revolution does not start. Security has bigger numbers. The monsters attack. The Vault unifies to fight the monsters but loses. Characters escape but since the monsters are not as distracted by Security Forces, they follow the characters and kill a few.

So if you think about it, the revolution helped distract the monsters so that our characters could escape!

Everyone must die.

Although, much more brutal fights have transpired in the past with jack and a few other Vault Citizens, so it's curious as to why this happened this specific time, and not other times.

I guess the Vault Security Forces knew about Jack's history and wanted to go all out this time. They were trying to make an impression on him to get him to stop attacking people.
