HISTORY & CULTURE
-History:
The Gulemid Empire has its origins over 70 years ago in the vast steppes of Korem. For it was then that the future Sultan, Arp-i-Gulam, took control over the Gulem tribe after his father's death. Since his early days Arp had proved to be an ambitious and ruthless individual. And it didn't took long for the young chieftain to start putting his plans in motion by subjugating or outright exterminating several neighboring tribes.
Alp's reign of terror on the steppes eventually attracted the attention of the powerful Lurenid Shahdom, who ruled over the fertile lands of Shamer, south of the steppes. The Shah decided to put down this nomad warlord before he could set his sights on the fertile lands of the Shahdom. Allying itself with several tribes already fighting Alp, the Shah's mighty armies marched into the steppes where the young chieftain was foolish enough to give them battle. As expected, the proud tribal chieftain was defeated by the superior armies and forced to flee with a small group of his kinsmen.
Driven out of their homeland, Alp and his remaining followers rode east into the lands of the Karezhi tribes, another group of steppe peoples who often warred with the Koremid. It was there that Alp would finally fall under the sway of the dark forces that would give him the power necessary to start his quest for vengeance.
The corruption started when Alp and his remaining 10 companions saved the life of a wandering shaman and his daughter from a band of brigands. The shaman, Nergui, was a practitioner of forbidden sorcery and worshiper of evil spirits. The shaman took Alp as his apprentice and bodyguard as a sign of gratitude and in the next years Alp gladly learned what he could from his master. Using the foul blood-fueled sorcery to enhance his natural lifespan and strength while making a name for himself in the lands of the Karezhi as a respectable and skillful mercenary. Eventually he married his master's daughter, Sarnai, and years later the two sacrificed Nergui, urged on by the incessant whispering of the nameless spirits of the steppes when the Red Sun shone in the sky.
And so, some 20 years after his rise to chieftain of the Gulemid tribe Arp, his new wife and his band of mercenaries rode out back towards the land of the Koremid. Using sorcery to change his appearance to hide his identity from his old enemies, Alp played on the general discontent against the Lurenid Shah and his steppe allies who had subjugated the region after Arp's defeat.
Once he had mustered a sizable force the spirit's whispering increased in intensity as they revealed their names and nature to Alp and Sarnai, urging them to finally rise up and conquer in their unholy names. And it was that what Alp did. The power and experience he gathered in his lengthy exile allowed him to swell his forces with those Koremid tribes discontent with the current order of affairs, Karezhi bands eager for glory and even a few overly ambitious Lurenid aristocrats who had no idea of what they had gotten into.
Alp's war in the steppes was fast, efficient and brutal. The Lurenid forces were wiped out to the last while their settlers, if luckly, ended up as slaves. Tribes who refused to submit were also slaughtered. Thousands were sacrificed to Alp's new gods while Alp crowned himself "Sultan of the Steppes" in honor of his old tribe. The Sultan didn't stop at the steppes however, his desire to avenge his first defeat still drove him. And the whispers got even more insistent in urging him to continue him campaign into the Shahdom.
Alp rode out of the steppes with thousands of bloodthirsty riders at his back, raping, killing and burning his way out of the borderlands and into the fertile lands of Shamer. His savagery barely contained by both his wife and the ever present whispers. Both who had no desire to rule over a depopulated wasteland. The invasion was made easier by the fact that the Shah himself had led the bulk of his armies to join the fight against Dagon IV even before Alp's return.
It took some three years for Alp to conquer the entirety of the Shahdom. And even then the fighting did not end as people fled to the hills and forests to resist their new overlords. But those rebels could not stop Alp from crowning himself on the ashes of the Great Fire Temple of Maderban, the former capital of the Shahdom and now the seat of his new Empire.
With his lands more or less secured the whispers drove Alp to send emissaries to the encroaching forces of Aldebaran, offering his allegiance and support against the enemies of Dagon. Some within Alp's court criticized this move, calling him a coward and opportunist. But these dissenters were the first to be impaled in honor of Alp's masters at the grand temple he had built in his new capital.
Now, decades later, Dagon IV rules almost unopposed as God-Emperor while Alp himself remains on the throne thanks to his blood sacrifices and obedience to the master of the world. Though for how much further he will remain it's yet to be seen. For the sorcery used by the Sultan is no match to that of the God-Emperor. His own sons and daughters plot among themselves, forming alliances against each other and preparing for their father's death while the resistance continues to be a torn on his side. But all of this does not concerns the Sultan, for his gods continue to whisper to him. And as long as they do so he knows that he still has work to do. Nevermind the fact that he barely leaves his palace these days.
