Darkness Ascendant

Fifty years ago Dagon IV, Emperor of Aldebaran, covetous of the lands he did not rule and fearing his own mortality, enacted a heinous rite with the help of five of his closest lieutenants. What they did, exactly, is the source of constant speculation: some say they sacrificed children of Aldebaran's capital, Kuranes, to the spider-god Nyarlthos in exchange for a share in the deity's power. Others that he consumed the souls of the city's populace, increasing his might immensely, though at the price of being constantly dependent on continual sacrifice to survive. Others still maintain that Dagon found an ancient artifact of immense power.

Whatever the Emperor and his circle of followers did, it caused the sun to shine an angry, dull red for ten full days, with no moon at night, only strange and sinister constellations. From the Red Night, which ruined crops and plunged the world into panicked chaos, the Emperor emerged as a being of immense power, whose armies swept over the other nations of Geryon. His five lieutenants too had become something more than human, wielding powerful and dark magics, and in time became known as the Immortals, his most fearsome servants.

The powerful kingdom of Varyon, neighbor and ancient rival to Aldebaran, was the first to be destroyed, crushed by Dagon's unexpected onslaught. After the shocking defeat and enslavement of Varyon, some nations bent the knee, others actively collaborated with the new god-emperor, but most were enslaved and destroyed in their turn.

Aldebaran, once a rich and fertile riverland, slowly became a twisted, haunted place filled with the husks of once proud cities, now sinking into poisonous bogs and fens and haunted by monsters and demons. Where once was a thriving culture and economy, now there is only slavery amid ruins, and the omnipresent totems and shrines of the Cult of Dagon. The citizens of Aldebaran are changed too.The Emperor's dreaded Legions are increasingly made up of horrible mutants and abhumans, with bulging, vaguely insectoid eyes and sharpening mouthparts and claws. The Emperor's ruling caste- the self-proclaimed Perfecti- suffer even more horrible mutations than the lesser ranks, whom they also outstrip in power and cruelty. They are faster and stronger than normal men, and are capable of potent sorcery.

Now Dagon IV is now nearly master of all, ruling with the aid of his five Immortals and the Perfecti. They enforce a strict caste system in the lands they control directly, and demand tribute in the form of children, woman and blood-slaves from the nations they've subjugated. Human sacrifice is offered to the god-emperor night and day in his haunted capital of Kuranes, and the nights grow longer and darker as the world itself begins to sicken. Strange, unpleasant plants and fungus have begun to spread beyond the borders of Aldebaran, and wildlife in many places is becoming increasingly aggressive and strange.

Some, however, resist still. The Scarred King, once the brother to the King of Varyon, now little more than a guerrilla captain, has continued to inflict defeats on the Legions, and is a legendary figure of hope to the masses chafing under Dagon's yoke.

Welcome!

This is a small nation/faction RP that takes place after the victory of the sinister God-Emperor Dagon over the fantasy world of Geryon.

The setting is what I call "High Fantasy OOC/Low Fantasy IC", meaning that the world would have as many fantastic elements as we like, but there would be limited magic "on camera" in the IC, as both an aesthetic choice to keep magic... magical and mysterious, as well as to put a limit on IC power levels while allowing for maximum creativity and freedom OOCly. There will be no magic system and no 'canon' cosmology for this RP, so competing and mutually incompatible understandings of the world, gods, and magic are fine.

Players are free to play as nations conquered/being conquered by Dagon, or resisting Dagon's advance (though I will limit the latter category), as well as lone heroes and villains. Some nations and characters may have allied with the God-Emperor, so collaborators or high ranking members of the Empire of Aldebaran are welcome as well, including Perfecti and Immortals (see below). Mafias, pirate gangs, resistance movements, brigands, cults, etc, etc are all fair game. While this is a nation/faction RP, this will be very character focused, with the subjugated nations serving more as a backdrop for the drama than as primary actors- at least at first.

HUGE WIP
-Realm name: Tsarleio
-Flag/Banner:

NATIONAL
-Capital: Tsarpolis
-Government Type: Absolute Monarchy
-Relation to Aldebaran: Allies
-Currency: Ruberua
-Population: Five Million
-Unique Trait #1: Rise for the Tsarkhan: Units can siege cities at a much faster speed.
This is because of how the Vizantiytsy are built overall. While slower overall, the Vizantiytsy are known to be able to last for a long time during sieges. They are meant for attacks over a longer space of time.
-Unique Trait #2: (Created by me, mostly to reduce min-maxing)
-Unique Flaw #1: Division of the Tribes: There is a smaller amount of loyalty to the Tsarkhan amongst the others that are below him in the Empire.
This is because of how the government is actually built up as. The Government is basically feudalistic, with The Emperor and Religious leader at the top, then the High Dukes and High Sages, then the Dukes and Sages, then the Counts, then the Mayors, then the Soldiers, then all other jobs are put into some section lower.
-Unique Flaw #2 (Created by me, mostly to reduce min-maxing)

-Majority Race Characteristics:

-Minority Races: Humans

RELIGION & MAGIC
-State Religion: Amidhel
-Religious Information:
Amidhel has a focus on Good and Evil, with Amidral being the Good side, and Ukhel being evil. They believe that before the creation of Humanity, that Ukhel and Amidral where once 1 united being, known as Amidhel. Amidhel was the creator of Everything, and he created two races, the Original Vizantiytsy, and the Dracosa. The Dracosa became evil and disgusting creatures, while the Vizantiytsy became the creations that where Moral. This split between Amidhel's creations caused Amidhel himself to split into two Gods, Amidral The Kind, and Ukhel the Evil.

Both Gods have 3 Forms, each with control over Something Different. Amidhel has his Life Form, his Water Form, and his Light form. Ukhel has his Death Form, Fire Form, and Shadow Form. Ukhel looks like a Giant Dragon Humanoid, with two large Black wings with black fire at the tips of them. Amidral looks like a Phoenix humanoid, with two large Wings that have Water flowing out of the tips.

The Vizantiytsy believe that when the End Days Begin, that Amidral and Ukhel shall unite again, and they shall reset all they began, starting another universe for a new population. One of the main beliefs in Amidhel is that if you are good, you shall go into the next universe as another sentient life form, while if you are bad, you shall spend the rest of immortally in Uhell until the next Universe is created.

A few notes as you work on your sheet.

Population is very high, as is the army numbers- I would just leave these sections blank for now, and I will put up guidelines about population soon.

Your race should probably just be a human ethnic/cultural group, no reason for them to be different species. Dont worry about listing the racial traits, you can just explain some of their features in terms of their culture and ethnicity.

Your unique trait should be fleshed out a bit more, with an explanation given as to why your country has superior siegecraft. Also, it seems like two traits in one, since being able to raid across rivers doesnt correlate to being good at sieges. In fact, the opposite would be likely. A primarily raiding army probably wouldn't be good at taking a fortified city.

Some of the above is the result of ambiguities in the OP, which I will correct now.

So in the casein population and military numbers I'm going to assume the demographics of the high European middles ages would be a fair analogue? Post-Black Death/Famine? And then also accounting for prolonged warfare?

I was aiming for a population of around 6 or 7 million and a possible levy of around 10,000. The military itself would be largely composed of veterans and 'professionale' (by trade and necessity). I'm still aiming to make an independent, resistant kingdom, on that note. One that's probably on its last legs and contending with an apparently hopeless war, famine, and a swelling refugee population.

EDIT: forgive the trashy spelling and grammar, posting via phone.

That sounds good. we'll be using the high middle ages as an analogue for population, probably not post-black death since we are in the midst of our worlds "black death" equivalent. You can up your numbers a bit from what you proposed.

A resistant nation sounds good, I look forward to seeing what you come up with.

I would rather keep it to the tech available to high antiquity. More advanced tech is fine in some areas, but gunpowder is a no...unless you convince me I should allow it.

Hmm, would you allow a small kingdom or principality influenced by the crusader states? Religion being their predominate ideal, and being a militaristic order. That would at the start at-least be resisting Dagon and his legions.

Yes. Two notes: I would prefer the crusader kingdom not to have pseudo-christianity as its religion, because pseudo-christianity is a pet peeve of mine in fantasy settings for some reason. Second, resisting nations will likely have to a) band together to survive b) oocly, their creators have to be willing for them to lose and even be destroyed.

So, these 'Immortals'. Have they got any children? Can they have any children?

Interesting question. I pictured the Immortals and Perfecti a bit like vampires, propagating through some horrible initiation rite. I suppose there's no reason they can't reproduce sexually as well, though. Their children are likely to be twisted, mutated monsters. Which is...fun. So yes, allowed.
