Check this thread occasionally, at the bottom, for updates.

7/11 - Few things to think about:
-No need for any characters to be linked, but some form of relationship with someone is kind of advised.
-Characters do NOT have to be involved in ANYTHING illegal. They could be a builder, electrician, teacher, whatever.
-EEEEVERY character SHOULD have some sort of "job" with the city. A LEGIT one. Meaning, people aren't going to be just hanging out and eating and shit.
-Be wary of living in Ward 3.
-Feel free to PM me about relationships with my characters, I'm more than willing to collaborate.

The year is 2025, and it is 12 years after the cordyceps virus began ripping its way across the United States and the world. While FEDRA, The Fireflies, militia units, and bandit groups all made moves for control, territory, and supplies, the city of Blue Valley (fictional) remained relatively safe. Because of a quick thinking, fast moving, and arguably paranoid, small government, large walls were built around the city and from that wall, anywhere from a bit less than a mile, to as little as 10 feet, debris was cleared back to allow visibility.

While there is much struggle, sacrifices, and conflict felt by the individuals, the truth is that the city itself has not suffered much. There were some minor attacks, one outbreak that wasn’t massive, and no major riots.

The city always had an open door policy, albeit a strict and heavily regulated one. It allowed people to enter after weeks of isolation, quarantine, and interviews. There were people turned away for instability issues, and some even say that those people were summarily executed as to not allow them to become a threat to the city. This is adamantly denied by city officials however. In the last few years, the stream of people has reduced to a rare occurrence.

The city officials are a People’s Tribunal, Chief of Police, Mayor, and Logistics officer. There are other positions under those, such as inspectors, the Militia, housing, logistics, energy officers, fire fighters, and several others. The Blue Valley Militia is the police and military all in one. They were patches with BVM stitched in, along with a number to show the ward that they are policing.

The city has power and running water due to two small solar and wind sources but these resources are rationed and heavily monitored. Both of the sources are outside of the city, so maintaining them consists of leaving the city walls. There is another smaller solar panel farm inside the city, but it is not large at all and its power is used for all needs deemed essential.

While Blue Valley has remained safe for the most part, that does not mean it is pristine. Buildings, roads, everything is in a varied state of decay. Some building are falling apart, some have suffered fires, and some are being slowly stripped down for materials.

The city is divided into 6 Wards. The areas are broken up mainly by size and there is little to no prejudice in terms of who is housed where. While the city itself is walled off, each Ward is also walled off, something that was done after the outbreak when it was deemed important to contain future breaches. There are gates and checkpoints to each other Ward.

While the city seems a shade perfect, there are struggles. Medical supplies are in short supply, as are new firearms. There are few individuals able to do things like rebuild architecturally, engineers are non-existent, and fine trades are limited. There are few doctors and not many people able to do things like rebuild engines or complex machinery. There are some parties who want the city to expand, others that want to go out and look for both survivors, the government, and/or supplies. There is a small divide among people wanting to support FEDRA and others the Fireflies, while a majority do not feel the need to become involved with either. Some see that the need to take a side is eventual. Then there are bandit threats. It’s not uncommon for there to be raids or attempts, and it’s even more of a threat to those who need to go outside the walls. Some people also feel that they should be allowed more freedom, mainly to go outside the wall at their own discretion. They feel that the government of Blue Valley is stifling, if not oppressing them and limiting their freedoms for no reason. Firearms are limited, there is only limited voting and more often than naught, the government can implement a law or rule and use “necessity” or “safety” as grounds to do so. Then, there are politics between Wards, with constant disputes between resources and amenities. There is a relatively high poverty rate and while the officials themselves are by no means living in luxury, well, people always want what others have.

Blue Valley itself is about 50 miles north of Phoenix and about 75 miles south of Flagstaff along Route 17. It is east along the highway and not far the small (fictional) Balta River and the Cordes Lakes, a group of several man made lakes. All of these are well outside of the city.

While the main city is walled off, there is a good portion of the city OUTSIDE the walls. While there are some patrols to monitor these buildings and the area, the frequency of them increases and decreases based on time and known threats.

Is no one joining this? Anyway, I think I know why. It's the Last of Us universe. It's set long after much of the chaos was gone, and everything had settled on a relatively stable, even if moldy surface. The Last of Us isn't the most popular thing with zombies right now either, that spot having been wrestled from it by The Walking Dead.

Anyway, any ideas on how to proceed? Wanna come up with a new idea or rethink this one?

The good news about being me is that I can wait, I'm not in a hurry, haha.

Not sure if you remember, but even back in Surviving: The End, I didn't rush, and I don't care about slow starts. I'm a firm believer that around half of the people starting an RP like this will quit anyway, and I'm ok with that. I love killing characters, you know this. I'd rather have about 3 dedicated players than a bunch of fickle people who are eventually just gunna jump ship anyway.

I'm gunna wait a bit more and see what happens ceasing this. Would you want to, if things don't take off, start a 1x1/small group LoU RP?

Hey, sorry it took me a bit to get here. Similar to Az, my activity on the site can be somewhat sporadic (mostly due to my work schedule) but I DO log on several times a week.

Anyways, I'm still rather interested in joining this. I need to take a much closer look at it tomorrow though.

Name: Walther Winters.

Age: 43.

Last Occupation: Firefighter.

Birthplace: Port Morris, Bronx, New York.

Appearance: As pictured above except visibly appearing much older. There are bags under his eyes, his dark black hair has touches of grey peppered in it and is now treated with much less grooming, resulting in a more untamed mane. Most of his facial hair is shaved regularly enough to the point that it remains as stubble except for when he doesn't get the chance to take care of it and his mustache is always in a handlebar fashion. Although he is getting older and he doesn't take the best care of himself, the man seems to still be in quite a bit of shape. Tanned skin is pulled tight against a strong, muscled frame. Tattoos cover the majority of the man's body, including his knuckles, none of them particularly flowing with each other. He's most often dressed in a plain or striped t shirt with the same green military jacket over top, tight jeans, and combat boots.

History: Born and raised in the Bronx as the first generation in his family to be a natural American. His grandparents on both sides were Greek immigrants and both his parents were brought to the United States at a very young age. Almost all of his years of school were insignificant in the long run as he never went on to do anything else involving his education after graduation and he didn't play any sports. Due to his interest in helping people and meeting the requirements, Walther went on to joins the ranks of New York's Fire Department and worked there up until the outbreak. Walther was married to a woman whom he had two boys and a girl with, though they later divorced and he only saw the kids on the weekends.

When the outbreak occurred, Walther remembers it as being significantly chaotic in the city, which was being quarantined by National Guard and scrutiny toward targets was not a high priority. Between the infected and the soldiers, many people were killed and bodies filled the streets while explosions rang on almost every block. He raced to find his ex wife and his kids but the phone lines were down and by the time he reached their apartment, it had been ransacked for supplies and was empty. He never saw them again.

The first year felt just as chaotic as that first night. He had left the city and was simply traveling with no particular goal. He avoided all cities, even those that were being 'reclaimed', for fear of seeing another massacre like he did in New York. Walther found it best to stay on his feet and although he ended up with groups here and there, they would often perish or decide to settle down somewhere perceived as safe.

By the second year, Walther had found a group of people who were just as restless as he was. They drank and had fun and brought joy back into life. They didn't worry about the same struggles of scavenging that others did... because they took what they needed. The group traveled the countryside and robbed who ever came across them, taking from loners, families, and groups alike. Sometimes they found other collections of bandits and whether it was through sheer luck or skill, they conquered them as well. It was survival of the fittest.

Yet, even that came to an end after so long. One by one the members of this brigade fell to the many perils of the wasteland around them. Whether it was Infected, stronger bandits, military forces, or simple illness and starvation. In the end Walther was the only survivor and losing the few that he was close to made him not only realize the terrible things that they had done together but made him swear off joining anymore groups.

After trying to settle down as a hermit amongst the ruins of a small town, traveling the roadside by himself, attempting to survive in the woods, and on occasion resorting to robbery like he used to, Walther finally decided that he had to find sanctuary or he couldn't bear to live any longer. Thus, he began his search for one of the cities that had been reclaimed, a safe haven that would take him.

Now here's here, after an extensive process, working as a fireman like he used to, doing part time militia work on the side... and becoming inquisitive on a way a better way to achieve luxury through smuggling. Although most of his gear was taken by the authorities before he entered the city, he stashed some on the other side and was able to retrieve it by paying a smuggler, which sparked his interest in such an ordeal.

Personality: Walther's personality has remained (mostly) unaffected by the dire struggle for survival which he's experienced. He's tough and thinks that showing a lot of emotion or attachment can be construed as a sign of weakness but he's also willing to connect with people and get to know them personally. If someone were to become close enough, he would show undying loyalty and even sacrifice himself for them. If he disagrees with someone he isn't afraid to show it and overall, he doesn't really care about people's opinions of him. Even if he's wrong or it will lead to trouble, Walther would rather make an ass of himself than admit his failure.

Walther's will to live is one of his most defining traits. It has propelled him to survive the 'apocalypse' for the last twelve years. Although he is inherently and morally good, his will to live will trump that and he will go as far as to kill an innocent person if it would save him. He could be considered mostly trustworthy until it came to down to a dire situation that looked like it had no escape.

A lot of Walther's decisions still haunt him to this day. He was always a bit of an alcoholic, drinking regularly to relax or have a good time. Now, he remembers what he had to do before entering the city and drinking helps put his mind at ease. There are few moments that go by where Walther hasn't put down a drink or two.

@Darkraven There you go, our first victi--Er... Our first other player! I knew we'd find a sucke--Uh... Dedicated player soon! Anyway, get at me if you wanna work on a link between chars.

@innertt I AM THE ONLY ONE ALLOWED TO HAVE SPORADIC SCHEDULES!!! I mean...That's fine, with the erratic schedule and all that. Just keep active when you find time. I look forward to seeing a char and always feel free to talk to me if you have questions or whatever.

@Say Anything Everything looks well with Walther. Props for braving the handlebars. I know I wouldn't! Anyway, just need to add one thing: the Ward that he resides in. Feel free to just add it and post in the CHARACTER tab.

Also, for you and anyone else who has approved chars, feel free to post in the IC if there are any flashbacks or current scenes that you feel eager to post.

Again, this RP is very open world-ish, meaning characters do not have to meet, interact, or even know each other. Just be more mindful of posts when your char is interacting with another.

Is there any significant difference between the wards?

Also, I don't want to be too heavily connected to any other characters just yet but I included the interest in smuggling since I saw that both of your characters were smugglers. Perhaps one of your characters could have been the smuggler who brought Walther his gear?

@Azseth What do you mean by goof? I meant at the time when you came here and started another RP. I didn't expect you to create a Last of Us RP. Because previously it'd been something original. So it kinda threw the zombie RP character generator in my head off, because I've never played the Last of Us games, neither am I a big fan of it...

Anyway, here's a bunch of ideas I have, do tell me what you're interested in:

- A Chinese shopkeeper who's innovative and opportunistic, resulting in a booming business selling what have become known as retro-tech weapons (basically regressed weapons that are nonetheless lethal, reusable and durable) such as Cho-No-Kus, spears, and even ballistas for dispatching Cordyceps. He does all sorts of other things, but he had become one of the main sources of new furnitures, small buildings and raw materials. He's also involved in the smuggling business, and is actively lobbying for its legalisation. He is one of the patriarchs of an extended immigrant family.

- An Atheistic, I-Don't-Give-A-Shit Former British SAS trooper sent into the US for peacekeeping purposes, as the UK was doing better in the initial outbreak. He got stuck in the US when society's infrastructure fell apart on both sides. At present, he is serving in the city's militia, but belongs to a party within the militia who wants to make scavenging and smuggling legal. He personally believes that it is how the city will survive in the long run. With him, the group would have the backing of a portion of the police/military, although they're a minority within it.

- Or how about a Carpenter who's also a member of the local mafia? He's involved in everything dirty, and he's a good soldier of the Mafia, getting his hands slimy for them. He believes in survival of the fittest, he believes in material wealth and money, and he's unapologetically cold, mean and harsh. But he has a soft spot for those who he saw as above him, and of course, girls. So he's basically a minion, and has the mentality of one. Namely, he doesn't really like making decisions, nor is he any good at it (which is why he's in the mafia business to begin with), but he knows how to take initiative and do work. With him, the group would have the backing of a Mafia family, but not the entire criminal underground.

That's all I got for now...

EDIT: Oh, I got another one, here you go:

- Or maybe... Steven McQueen (), a guy who used to be a big name in the world of horror fiction, but now has to push that to the side and work as a propaganda writer. Let's just say he's pretty wrecked by this that he started resorting to alcohol and drugs. He's also trying to redeem himself by getting involved in politics and doing what's right, which is where he gets involved with the group. He wants to help legalise scavenging and open trade. Steven McQueen has vast connections in the literary world, whatever's left of it, and remains a folk name such that only the coldest, meanest and most illiterate or unread would want to do anything to him.

@Darkraven Well. I'll start by saying that you should pick the char you think you'd be most interested in playing in this setting. I mean, some idea may sound great to me, but you may be forcing yourself into a role that you end up regretting. I DO always say, try to make a character with some trait that can make things interesting later. Interesting can mean makes him mesh well with people, or struggle to be accepted, something like that. If you put a gun to my head though, I'd vote for the last one. Just seems unique and interesting, and his history could lead to a lot of backstory and conflicts in the present, conflicts with himself included.

@Halcyon Don't talk about it, be about it.

Alright, I'll decide on a character. A writer it is, but I'm not sure if I want a character based on Stephen King. I'll have to decide.

In the meantime, why not revive the interest check and bring in more people?

Also, I've been busy, which is why I haven't be prolific here, because I've been prolific in writing elsewhere.

I posted a few times about the OOC being up. I guess I can go start @ing people. I just am not usually one to go prodding people to join my RPs.

Like I said, I'd rather have a handful of dedicated players than two handfuls of players I have to carry.

@Say Anything I am not sure I responded, and if I didn't I apologize. There is no legitimate significance between wards. They're laid out differently, and some may have different set ups, policies, or amenities, but it's nothing major. For example: the Third Ward has the small solar farm, the Second Ward has some municipal buildings. And some of the "important" people may have slightly larger abodes, but it's not like all poor people are in one Ward, or all police are in one.

Also, people will live in the Ward that they work, to prevent having to move across Wards. Movement between Wards is regulated and monitored.

Hope that helps!
