The world ended for most of the human race not in a nuclear holocaust or some man made virus. With the global warming melting the artic ice the world was once again faced with global extinction. Not by floods or rising water levels but by a virus hidden in the ice. The real dinosaur killer was asleep frozen beneath the snow. Becoming air born with the natural evaporation. Then catching local air currents and covering the globe. Killing off the population in mass. It left the animal life alone having different physiologies focusing on humans.
From the current 7 billion people the virus brought the human population down to 60million. By shutting down the nervous system blocking the ability for nerves to receive messages people just fell over light puppets with cut strings. They died from asphyxiation as the after effect. In a year the virus decimated the human race. The cure came only after it was discovered the Native Americans of North America were immune. Now inoculated you are one of the few survivors.
Chaos spread, governments crumbled, and various groups gathered together in the cities not able to keep everything repaired left most of the structures abandoned and in disrepair. Nature has begun the slow task of retaking what was lost. Most of the machines are out of gas or electricity. All the food not canned or sealed to last has rotted. all currency is worthless.
