The brisk, wild wind rattle the cable - like rope. It was sturdy, and crossing ravines was something they had done many times before, but this, this was different. Spears of ice rose up like arrows, piercing the dull, grey sky, intimidating the group, and at the bottom of the ravine, death awaited them, ready to take them from what was left of the world. The first to go across was a tall, slender man, trembling with fear. His skin went pale, and the hair on his back rose, giving him a prickling sensation. His hands trembled as he grasped the rope, and let his body dangle over the ravine. Inch by inch he made his way across the rope. His hands trembled, a little to much, and he lost his grip, falling into the dark abyss with a scream.

He was up next. As leader of the group, he showed boldness, and strength, but under the tough shell, was a spark of fear, that he wouldn't let evolve into a surge of it. He was more experienced, and went on hands and knees, almost inchworming across. The end of the gorge was close, but to him, it was farther. Almost. A little fartner. He was relieved when he felt the cold of the snow and ice shroud his hands. He scurried to the snow, and scrambled up, wiping the powdery substance of his clothes. He looked across at the others, who were now making their way across.

Kito watched the first man fall into the abyss, it was clear he had lacked strength required to live another day; but then again, food was becoming more and more scarce, which typically meant some people went hungry and lost strength in the process. His eyes flickered to the leader of the expedition, he had made it across. Good, at least he still had strength to lead. Kito looked back at the others, some of them had visible signs of hunger, they wouldn't make it across the ravine. Turning his head back to the cable, he stepped forward, grabbing it. He carefully inched himself over the ravine until the ground was no longer there, using his strength, he managed to swing his legs and cross them around the top of the cable. He pulled himself along the line, hand over hand, just as he used to do during his training. He did his best to ignore the brisk wind that howled as he crossed, threatening to blow him down into the abyss with the man before him. When he made it to the other side, he stood and brushed the snow off him, taking a few steps off to the side afterwards. He turned to look at the others, "Some haven't eaten for days, don't expect those people to make it." he said. He turned from the ravine and began searching the immediate area for any sort of tracks, an indication that food would be nearby. He spotted a set a few feet from himself and moved closer, crouching down to examine them. Hmm. Hoofprints. Obviously not horses. Goat maybe? Might be a ram. Regardless, these look a few days old, they're likely not around here anymore. It'd be nice if it was, but it seems unlikely. he thought to himself.

Makaria shivered looking out over the ravine though it wasn't just the cold causing it but it made a difference. She was not the biggest fan of heights and the new landscape provided endless chances to renew the discomfort the surged up whenever they had to make a crossing. Not helped when the first man to make the attempt fell which made the idea of going across even less pleasant but there really was no other choice as to staying or going. She made her way up next to the cable taking a deep breath to steady herself before starting to slowly inch herself along keeping her eyes up and away from the chasm below giving total focus to staying on the rope. The wind was forcing her to be more cautious with her large coat threatening to catch a gust which would strain her grip or at worst pull her clean off. It took her longer but she made it to solid ground after a close call right at the end causing her to scramble onto the snow wanting to be about as far away from the ravine as possible. It took a little work to calm down afterwards and the small woman was obviously not pleased as she muttered in complaint while getting the now off the larger coat as best she could. Couldn't have just been open area like the last place... She thought annoyed with the environment itself for making her do stupid things like going across a gap.

Makaria deciding against looking back took in what was in front of her trying to see if she could spot anything that stuck out in the white, maybe a building that still managed to be above ground. Nothing jumped out quite yet with the wind stirring up all the snow on the surface making long distance vision damn near impossible drawing a sigh out of the Finn who wouldn't mind being able to worm into a building about now.

He felt almost nervous watching the others go across. Not because he was too worried about himself. He was, this was a dangerous stunk to pull off in the best of conditions and in the best of health. They had neither. Even if some of them were fairing better in the health and physical shape than others, overall, they were all just a few breaths away from not breathing anymore.

You could give up, a little voice somewhere in his head whispered. Even that was too tired sometimes to put up much of a fight.

"Or I could not," Ricky grumbled back, the sound of his voice lost in the wind as he watched the little blonde woman go across ahead of him. She was a pretty thing, what he could see if her, and sneaky too. He sometimes thought of her as a less hair hobbit, even if she wasn't quite that short. Just thankfully he'd never said that outloud to her. He still wasn't certain how she would take that, even if he meant it as a compliment.

Once she was over he took a deep breath, wishing he had a smoke so bad. But he'd been bad at rationing those. Stress made him smoke more after all.

You're just a broken chimney.

Ignoring thay he stepped out, being cautious and slow. He was a big man, this cable was not the thickest, let alone the ice and snow and wind. He was not going to fall to his death here. He wouldn’t let something so petty as a ravine be what did him in. But he felt his right foot slip when he was half way there, hands grabbing at nothing while he regained his balance like a some comic circus performer. Once he was back on, stable as could be, he hurried. It was stupid he knew, but he was done being out there. A few other close calls still brought him safely to the other side.

"Wasn't so bad," he said to no one in particular as he crunched through the snow and out of the way of the others behind him.
