The OOC thread is now up here: roleplayerguild.com/topics/85895-beyon..

Beyond Civilisations Grasp...

Accepting new players

Summary:

- A jaunt of daring and do within the Warhammer 40,000 universe and setting.

- Characters can come in most shapes and sizes, their age, experience and so forth pretty much up to the participant; that being said, I will immediately re ject any God-like beings or over the top characters.

- Romance, violence and so forth are expected and accepted, let's just keep it to a 'adult' level without it getting X-rated!

Every action has a consequence, but not every character is the same or possessed of the same motivations or responses, so please bear this in mind if you decide to have a Tau Earth Caste member massacre innocent villagers.

- Our tale takes place in the most up-to-date period of 40K timeline, the beginnings of the 41st Millenium.

- All humanoid races will be considered - including Abhumans and the like. Those wishing to take part in the role of a Xenos character will need a darned good reason, and a darned good profile, the same going tenfold for those who might wish to role-play as a member of the Astartes. What I do not want are any Necrons, Tyranids, undercover or overt agents of the Inquisition...just use your logic for this one.

- I hope for a larger human-to-alien ration, if this tips too far toward being a Xenoscentric RP then I shall reign it back.

- Just to re-itirate an earlier point; no super-human killing machines, characters are to begin anywhere from a complete novice to a veteran or someone who has 'seen things' but no more for the moment. Guard veterans, experienced combatants, and so forth.

- Character sheets will be accepted based on merit alone, not 'first come first serve'; the more odd/powerful your character, the more exceptional your character sheet will need to be.

- The tale shall begin on a former Guard outpost, Outpost 57, just outside the Kronus Expanse and near Port Wander (think Mos Eisley 40K style) where we can gather, interact and so on. If you have any idea(s) of your own that might spice things up, please feel free to talk to me, though I make no promises that said idea(s) shall be implemented into the RP.

In Character Info:

This is the forty-first millenium, and if the Great Crusade was the golden age of Mankind and their space-faring voyage amongst the stars, then the current millennia is most certainly the complete reverse. In this universe, at this time, mankind stands upon the precipice of annihilation from a myriad of enemies both within and without - Xenos raiders, warlords and diplomats each seek to assail or undermine the God-Emperor's decaying and corrupt Imperium in any way that they can, heretics and worshipers of the Ruinous Powers plot the downfall of all that they may well of held dear, and even the Inquisition, those most loyal and incorruptible servants of He on Terra, commit genocides and the death of worlds at the merest whiff of such things.

All across the vast expanse of billions of worlds, held within the slowly dying cradle of the Imperium of Man, uncountable numbers live and cease in a darkness bought about by their own kind; Tyranids strip entire systems of life, Greenskins cleave apart any who stand before them in a tide of blood, and insidious Tau and Eldar follow their own pathways to some unforeseeable ends. Yet it is the Imperium which is its own worst enemy, keeping knowledge and and truth from its citizens, acting as an ever-present threat over their heads and always its agents and executioners there in the shadows.

There are those that transcend above this, men and women, scions of noble houses or individuals of varied extremes, that are gifted a Warrant of Trade by the High Lords and in the name of the Emperor himself. These 'Rogue Traders' set forth to save the Imperium in their own unique ways, to expand the borders of the realm and to carry out the Emperor's will across places yet unknown, gifted with authority almost as high as that of the Inquisition.

Rogue Traders are unique and powerful human individuals who serve as a combination of freelance explorer, conquistador and interstellar merchant for the Imperium of Man. They are hereditary Imperial servants and nobles, given a starship, a crew, and sometimes a contingent of Space Marines (in very rare cases) or troops of the Imperial Guard and carte blanche to roam those worlds of the galaxy that still lie beyond Imperial control or knowledge. In their task of exploring and exploiting the still-uncharted regions of the galaxy for Mankind, Rogue Traders might come across worlds harbouring long-forgotten human civilisations which will be later incorporated into the Imperium by official Adeptus Mechanicus Explorator fleets and expeditions of the Imperial Navy and Imperial Guard. Other times they find empty or alien-dominated planets ripe for colonisation, conquest or exploitation by the Imperium--and themselves.

Horatio Drake, a now exiled son of House Drake - a Terran noble house of some repute, though only the first three sons of twelve are truly known - has been given his Warrant of Trade simply to remove him from the familial line of succession. He has been given his Warrant, a ship, and ordered by his father to leave for the farthest reaches of Imperial space and beyond, something he has no hope of achieving alone. To this end, and on the advice of an old house retainer, he has travelled toward the Kronus Expanse where he intends to place about him those that might help him come out of his ordeal in one piece and breathing.

This is where you come in.

For whatever reason, and those reasons are no doubt your own, you have decided to travel to Outpost 57; this facility, if it can be called such, was previously the home of an entire three regiments of the Imperial Guard, men and women long since gone once the floating city of stark metal and minimal decoration was abandoned. Over time it took on a new life, its barracks being remodelled as dives and brothels, the parade square becoming an entire black market, and its dock - that had once seen the coming and going of grand Imperial vessels - now housing the ships of pirates, aliens and renegades. It is here, in a place so lawless that a man or woman never goes unarmed, that Drake expects to find his chosen few, his very own dirty dozen.

Now is the time of a gathering, but space is a very big place indeed - the Milky Way Galaxy but one part of it - and who is to say what lies beyond the fringes of the known? To join a Rogue Trader, one charged with charting and setting off in that very direction, is to gain that knowledge...though whether you survive to share it is another matter entirely.

Out of character info:

Welcome, one and all, to the grim darkness of the future where their is only war!

As part of a group, you shall be forming an entourage or retinue of sorts around the Rogue Trader. Exactly how you are perceived by he and the others of the group will depend on any number of factors - species, armament, religion and more- but no matter what scuffles occur and what friction might develop, all of you are there willingly. That being said, I have no doubt that each and every character will have their own agenda, motives and overall goals in mind, and I would hope for nothing less.

To begin with, as stated above, we will have a short 'gathering of the clans' - basically getting everyone together - on Outpost 57, from there we shall go ahead with a narrative I have prepared and see where it takes us. Your character can begin anywhere on the station, in any state, but we will all be eventually running into one another, most likely in the 40K version of the Mos Eisley Cantina.

I expect everyone will have some knowledge of Warhammer 40K, but for those that might lack a little, I have always found warhammer40k.wikia.com/wiki/Warhammer_.. to be one of the best places to look. Just make certain that the information has a source, otherwise it is very likely fan made and therefore not canon.

Rules

- Sort your squabbles out in private. If you persistently disagree with another player or they're grieving you, involve me. If necessary, I will get the moderators involved.

- No godmodding (controlling someone else's character).

- Try to post at least once a week, let me know if you can't post soon, and please try for at least three paragraphs.

- One character per player.

- My decisions are final.

Character Sheet

Please submit your character sheets by MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 14th. Post them in a hider in a comment in the OOC tab, NOT the Character tab.

Name: Your character's name. A pretty obvious one, so enough said.

Age: Unless you are not human, or a Space Marine, then please use common sense.

Gender: Male, female or other.

Race: Humanoid only, and try to keep them plausible.

Appearance: A written description of your character's appearance. No pictures. Please include here any weapons they may have, and any armour or clothing as well.

Personality: What kind of person is your character, what are their motivations etc, and how do they interact with others?

History: A sketch of your character's life and history, preferably until their arrival at Outpost 57. Give me three solid paragraphs, at least, please.

Skills: What skills do they possess, how did they come by them, what have they used/been using them for?

Equipment: What do they bring with them/carry on their person? Be sensible when deciding, as weight and wealth are both an issue.

Miscellaneous: Anything you want to mention but haven't been able to cover yet.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

I'm interested as for ideas, i suppose you can go for the horus heresy or even something along the lines of certain key battles within the universe. Or you can go even for a weird mystery route like some of the wh 40k books. -shrugs- I suppose in the end it's all up to you.

I love 40k, would be interested in an advanced roleplay and am happy to brainstorm ideas with you.

@Orcus@Flagg Thank you both, I'm glad I got some replies - was worried there for a bit - but I've narrowed it down to three options really;

- The Deathwatch, pretty standard squad-based RP revolving around the Astartes conducting a particular mission(s) and so on.

- Imperial Guard, something like a mix between Band of Brothers and Gaunt's Ghosts, a somewhat closer-to-real-life RP that I expect would be darker and grittier than the rest.

- A 'Crusade' style RP, each person commanding a squad/regiment in a rather expansive conflict - though whether this would be for or opposing the Imperium is yet to be decided.

Any of those sound like they would appeal to you? They are, of course, rough outlines waiting to be filled in depending on numbers.

In my opinion, the greatest strength of the Warhammer 40,000 universe is the juxtaposition between the extreme horror of the galaxy and the human spirit. I am a great fan of the Eisenhorn and Ravenor Inquisition novels for their storylines, characters and exposition on the galaxy and the lore, but the Gaunt's Ghosts novels hold a special place in my heart for their depiction of the struggle of regular, ordinary humans to stay... well, human.

So the quoted option above has my vote. Astartes are too easily made dull and I don't like the idea of commanding multiple units.

@Hank Excellent! A precise and well-written explanation, and I quite agree really; the Guard were what I was aiming for, but we'll see if others disagree with you before going ahead.

@Hank@Flagg@Orcus Ye know what? I'm going to go for the Guard; please feel free to tell me if this is not what you would like (anyone who might be interested) but, as for the moment, I shall begin work on a suitable OOC thread...and the Emperor protects.

Anyone else out there who may be interested, make thyselves known!

Finally an Imperial Guard rp! (Not gonna call it Astra Militarum, ever)

I'm definately interested in this as I am a massive WH40K fan and I've got a decent IG army... plus loved the "Only War" roleplaying game so... yeah, I'd love to join! :D

As am i, interested. Imperial Guards have always been my favorite faction in 40k.
I'll also help you brainstorm some ideas if you're still looking.

Might be interesting to combine the Crusade idea and the imperial guard idea. People can play either the commanders of the crusade/high level imperial officials/astartes, etc as well as grunts on the ground. I dunno, just spitballing, but I like the idea of RPing both as a Warmaster as the guy on the front end, bearing the brunt of the Warmaster's decisions.

I think something like Rogue Trader or something would be nice. Having to deal with Tau or others, trying to stay under Inquisition's radar and survive against the foes of Man without the protection of the Imperium, that sort of stuff.

@PeikUsually I would agree with you 100%, dear Peik, but it just-so-happens that I recently ran two Rogue Trader RP's on a different forum and both ended in failure; now I doubt that would be the case here, if everyone was posting regularly, but that idea is one Iwould put on the back-burner...for now - along with my Chaos crusade idea.

Hmmm, I'll tell you for what...

If this RP gets off the ground and gets some good posts in, I'll consider running a Rogue Trader RP alongside it. For now the focus shall be on the Guard, but no-one really knows what the future holds.

@Flagg Funny you should say that, as there is going to be a crusade, and we are going to be part of it! As GM, I shall of course be NPC'ng the highest of ranks, but participants will indeed be able to command formations as large as a regiment...at least at the beginning...

To be completely honest, I'm tempted to support this idea instead of the Guard. I like them both and will probably join an Imperial Guard RP regardless, but perhaps Rogue Tradering allows for significantly more freedom in storytelling.

Sorry to be so capricious, @Jbcool.

@Hank @Peik @Orcus@Flagg@Lone Wanderer@Zoldyck Dammit, Hank! :P

Okie dokie, everyone hustle up, listen in...all that good stuff.

As long as (more-or-less) everyone is alright with it, we'll go with the Rogue Trader; let me be clear, however, that I do expect any number of Guardsmen to be with/around the Trader. This will be the last time I change anything, as I do need to get an OOC up, so make your choice now.

Are you in, or are you out?

P.S.

Just to be clear, I'll be allowing nearly every race/species in 40K - excluding Tyranids, Necrons and the obvious ones; if you do wish to play a non-Human/Imperial character though, then you'd best be a darned good writer.

@PeikI will allow Abhumans, just expect a Beastman or Cat-Person to be extremely victimised if you decide to follow that route - Ratlings or Ogryns are, of course, more accepted.

@HankI thought you would be :)

I wasn't thinking of anything as dramatic as that. Just some fellow with a few oddities thanks to Hive World life, pushing it too far to count as pure human but not enough to count as abhuman.
