It was a brisk night, unusually calm and pleasant. Not too humid, not too dry. The peace would have kept until morning had a man not come charging into town, his face ragged and his hair wild and as white as snow. Earlier that day it had been brown.

"I seen it! I seen it!"

He fell on his knees, clawing at his cheeks with both hands. He had the look of a man who had seen his own future. Shutters were pulled open, folks who had work in the morning woken up prematurely. Some mocked him before slamming their windows closed, and others knowing what the fool had seen would duck away in fear, perhaps to make sure their doors were bolted and their children still slept safely. Islanders sometimes lived near volcanos. Those near the coast by hurricanes. Around here there was something else. Be it cheap real estate or family tradition, there were always those who walked the razors edge. Today someone had slipped. If one were intrepid enough to question the poor man, he would be all too eager to answer. He had everything to gain and nothing to lose, after all. He was now sobbing.

"The cave. A mile beyond where the trail ends, straight ahead. It saw me too..."

An old hunting trail, rarely used these days. It was overgrown with vegetation but could still be followed. It ended after seven miles. One more to go after that. One more mile, whereupon one would reach a cave. Not some gaping dragon's lair. Just a small mossy hole large enough for a man to sneak through on his hands and knees. A secret place. But the adventurer that had come all that way may surely know it for what it was, how it had a tendency to take away the ones you loved. The crazed man would have told them. He had a wife, he had a daughter. He was desperate. The hole was, not so much in the true sense of the word, a gateway between realities. A snaking little grotto that completely removed you from the land of Sunday mornings, family hugs, bustling markets, and boring neighbors. To venture inside was to abandon the world wherein lay all that was known, and enter the realm of the lost. If one were to go inside there would be little to see but a complete and silent blackness. Every inch of the tunnel would feel as if it had been licked by a dog. Damp and musky. It was not tight but long. Fifty yards of winding and crawling before there became room enough to stand.

Ruby looked down at the man quizzically, raising an eyebrow. The young woman's bright red hair was like fire in the bright sunlight. She was here on a backpacking vacation, and she wore short denim cutoffs, with a white tank top. Her boots were laced up to the middle of her shins, and aviators were covering her eyes. Her skull tattoo was clearly visible on her shoulder, and she had been exploring the area around the village. She was really enjoying herself, when this guy came crawling up to her. Oh well.

"You willing to pay? I can take care of whatever it is." The schlub began blubbering and agreed. Removing her equipment from her backpack, she threw the now-empty pack to the side of the dusty dirt road. While she wasn't wearing her normal clothing, she still had her weapons and equipment on her belt, eyepiece under her shades, and she pulled her gloves onto her hands, and grinned. This should be interesting.

When she reached the entrance of the cave, she took one look at the dank, moist passageway, and grimaced. Crawling? It would be very unpleasant. Still, it would be exciting, and she was still getting paid. Getting down on her knees, she crawled through the passageway, looking for any heat signatures ahead, and she probably would see.. something, cause this sh*t was damp and chilly.

No heat signatures. No life. Once Ruby had entered into the portion of the cave where it was possible to stand, she would be met with a simple cave tunnel easily big enough to walk along. There were many passages, but only one seemed to be used more. Seemed to stink worse. If she followed her nose, then it would be a mere half-hours walk through the rotting tunnels before she'd come upon a crevasse. Like the opening to the cave, it was not extraordinary. Only a black crack in the floor through which a big man may slip. Not a straight drop, but a jagged climb downwards for a few hundred feet.

*Farther and farther away from the world wherein lay all that was known...*

The one who claims finding monsters is easy has never met a true monster, and oftentimes the journey matters just as much as the goal. It gives one time to contemplate their life. Were Ruby to clamber down through the crevasse and into the inky depths, she would be able to notice the smell much, much more. A pungency that reeked of flesh rot. That special coppery aroma, melting and deep and sickly sweet, which arises only when the body of something that is still alive starts to die. At the bottom would be the main cavern. The ceiling would stretch out far, far above her. Further on was a black gulf even her night/thermal vision couldn't penetrate. Not because it was magic, no. It just seemed to stretch on forever, getting wider and wider the further one moved on. But there would be little need to look any further. The floor was a crunchy carpet, an endless nest of grime-caked bones that shrunk into the distance. Almost all of them were human, and most of the ones that were human looked small. They belonged to children. A hundred and twenty yards away was a blanched monument to death, almost touching the dripping stalactites. More bones. It was frigid this far down, but even so she could probably see it. Up there on the ceiling, halfway between her and the pyramid of skeletons. Moving so slowly. A bit at a time. Then stopping. A bit more, ever so sluggish. Then it stops again. A bulbous shape all bloated and wet. The pulpy layer of cold mucous surrounding its already cool and lightly pulsating body might have fooled a normal person. But it was just a shade different on the heat spectrum, a slightly brighter blue. If she watched long enough, intently enough, held still and gazed into...

Yes. Little by little, high above, it seemed to be moving towards her. The cruelest illusion that one could have at this point, one which had passed through the minds of countless others, would be that there was still hope for escape. The chance to leave that place and forget it all like a bad dream, to go back to warm homes and smiling faces. That something so far, so slow, that maybe *please oh gods please* had not yet noticed them, that perhaps that almost unseen thing may just be their *Shush... Shhhh...* imagination.

Ruby was both mildly impressed and slightly disturbed at the sight of the bone pile. Whomever could make this was obviously a killing machine. Then again, he/she was a killing machine, and Ruby was in its lair. Lacking any heat signature, Ruby began a scan of the area, hoping to get a concrete view of the structure of the cave. While the eyepiece's scanning range didn't reach to the very back of the cave, it did reach to the bone pile. What she saw gave her pause, at least for a second.

With bones strewn about it, some... horrid... thing, with the wings of a bat, lay almost completely still. Memorizing the layout and position of the bones, she unsheathed her knives, and held them in both hands, creeping up on the.. thing, silently, and avoiding the bones, so almost no noise was made, except her soft, controlled breathing, and her mildly increased heart rate.

As it was on the ceiling, there would be no getting at it with knives. If however Ruby moved below the monster, it might be inclined to come to her.

The knives weren't specifically intended for use as throwing knives, but they were balanced, so, without any warning, Ruby flung the one in her left hand at the... thing on the ceiling, and dove to the right immediately, keeping on the move, so she didn't get pinned.

The knife struck a stalactite, missing the creature entirely. Not because Ruby's aim was off, though. It had just moved out of the way, and very quickly at that. The thing would have squirmed above where Ruby had moved, releasing then its hold on the ceiling and falling like a greasy drop of rain right towards her.

As the creature was falling, Ruby was already gone. Rolling behind the bone pile, she initiated another scan. Nothing much had changed, but the creature was on the floor. Taking a bone, a femur, to be precise, and throwing it at the thing, Ruby ducked down low, and charged towards the thing with her other knife. The scanner was useful, but it wasn't good at tracking fast motion.

The monster held up its left wing to block the bone, membrane glistening with slime. With its other wing it would obscure Ruby's view of the rest of its body, so that she would be unable to see its long tail burrowing into the bones and snaking through them to get beneath her feet as she rushed in. The tail would surge upwards, seeking to wrap about her right ankle and jerk it out from under her to make her crash to the ground. If this occurred, then it would release her with its tail as it began clawing its way across the bones, moving as quickly as a spider does across a web. It would be upon the fallen Ruby in mere moments, the silent horror trying to clamp its rancid jaws upon her left leg before she could get up or scuttle backwards.

Ruby fell back, trapped by the monster. However, just because the creature had her leg in a vise grip with its teeth, didn't mean Ruby would be paralyzed with the pain. Wrapping her other leg around its head, and getting it in a headlock, Ruby slashed violently at the beast's throat, from the jugular to the brain stem.

(Edit:This, of course, is the course of events if the vampire doesn't let go.)

Ruby succeeded in getting Shashous-Throth in a headlock, but it would be an awkward one. It was huge, slippery, and very cunning. No monster could have survived so long through strength alone. It took wiles. It could have kept its tail wrapped about her leg, but it didn't. It could have drawn back its tail, but it hadn't done that either. The strong tail had been kept free and available so that it could slither up to entwine itself about Ruby's sword arm as she tried to swing. If this came to pass, then a second later the Magna Pater would reach forth to plant its long, hideous left paw upon the woman's chest to pin her torso in place, with the other limb creaking quickly out and grasping for the girl's free arm to keep her from taking up another weapon. It desired to restrict her entirely, that it may release her likely mangled leg and begin forcing its way further in with the unrelenting persistance of a rogue bear, misty red fumes puffing out of its slavering maw and warming Ruby's stomach. A decidedly un-animalistic sound would reverberate from within its heaving frame. A throaty, bubbling laugh that was almost like a maniacal sobbing. Its eyes, both wretchedly stupid and smart at the same time, gleamed with dull sadism. It intended to eat out the assassin's guts whilst she still lived.

While the creature succeeded in restraining the arm with her knife, Ruby could feel what was happening next, so she released it from the headlock, and kicked it in the side with her free leg, her knee driving sideways into its ribs. Moving her arm away from the beast's attempts to grab it, she didn't get away entirely. Her palm was cut open from the beast's claws, but she didn't have time to think about that. Just because the thing was pushing down on her chest, didn't mean she couldn't move. She was flexible, and the creature was covered in a mixture of blood and mucus, so she slid out from under it's hand, despite it pressing down. It's own nature worked against it, there. And then it started sobbing. Oooookay? Ruby didn't know how to respond to that. Maybe this thing was sane at one point? She didn't really care, as the thing was FUCKING TRYING TO EAT HER ALIVE. Pulling her bo out, she shoved the telescoping staff towards the creature's bloody maw, and shifted her body to the side, attempting to make it unable to move any closer without impaling itself in the brain stem with the blunt object.

As soon as Ruby had released it from the headlock, the monster changed tactics. It was slippery, yes, but the paw pinning the thief's torso to the bone-littered ground was adorned with a set of gruesome claws, the longest of which was a full eight inches long and lethally sharp. The kick would hit it in the ribs, doing only about as much damage as one would expect an unarmed blow to a wild beast would do. Though it wouldn't give it pause, a bruise would later well up on the creature's flank. That would be the first bruise someone had inflicted upon it without a weapon in over four centuries. Upon feeling the squirming organism trying to squeeze out from its grasp, Shashous-Throth would unceremoniously draw back its left arm, intending to unzip her intestines with that extra-long claw. It would be no easy feat to stop the horror from slicing her open from diaphragm to pelvis, especially with it manipulating her positioning with that damnable tail. Even a layer of body armor fabric would be sheared apart by the skull-sharpened claw of Shashous-Throth. The inhuman laughter seething out of its dripping mouth echoed into the depths of the seemingly endless cavern, rebounding off of the walls and mingling with the countless variations to form a maddening crescendo of choking, unearthly howls.

If Ruby still tried to use the bo staff, the Magna Pater would once again extend its right arm to try and take away the girl's offense, this time trying to slash the crook of her left arm to sever the tendons. It was no fast attack, but deliberate and measured to make it exceedingly difficult for her to defend.

Ruby used the bo, yes, but she didn't let herself get sliced in half. Interposing it between the monster's hand and her torso, Ruby held it back, before she grabbed the longest claw and began to push it backward, attempting to either break the claw, or the beast's finger. The bo fell to the ground, beside her, as she released it, in the same motion.

As soon as the beast released her knifehand, she would stab upwards towards the creature's abdomen, and if the creature just took the blow, drag the curved blade toward her, not unlike the curved talon of a giant raptor cutting through flesh. She would attempt to spill his guts by slashing up to the chest cavity, and once there, drive it in harder.

As lastly mentioned, the monster would try to sever the tendons in Ruby's left arm should she ty to defend with the bo staff. She would be able to block the left claw, but in doing so would leave her own arm vulnerable. Since the monster hadn't yet released her right arm with its tail, she would be left with a choice to get either her last free arm or her belly sliced open.

Ruby chose neither of these options, opting to push up with her left leg, kicking the vampire, with a Krav Maga low kick to the balls, while keeping the vampire's claws away from her stomach.

A rather obscure problem, but the monster's junk was on the inside. It would be a silly thing for it to drag its garbage around as it slithered over rough bones and rocks and shit. Even were its junk to be on the outside, it would be at the base of the tail and much too far for Ruby to reach, given that Shashous-Throth's head wasn't past her chest yet and its body was eight feet long. In trying to keep its claws away from her stomach with the bo staff, she would be hard pressed to keep it from slashing up her defending arm with its other set of claws. To make matters worse, it would once again begin trying to bury its snout into her belly to try and chew up her insides. It was attacking three different ways at once and Ruby was stuck on her back with only one free arm and a savaged leg. At a distance she might've been able to substantially harm the slimy devil, but up close it had far too many physical advantages. It was silent once again, only the sounds of the struggle existing.

Instead of trying to save her arm, she would hold up the talons as long as possible, while kicking upwards into the creature's torso, as hard as she could.

Ruby's free arm would probably be torn up by the monster as her kick struck it in the chest. It was forced a little ways back with a pig-like grunt, rivulets of stringy red saliva hanging from its mouth. It would be but a brief reprieve though, for shortly after it would then twist its head sideways and try to clamp down upon her good leg, above the knee.

When it clawed up her arm it might have ripped open the brachial artery. That, in addition to her mauled leg, would probably begin making the thief feel weary from blood loss. It still hung on wth its tail, and Ruby wouldn't be able to hold the claws on her chest back with a severely damaged arm. Unless she was able to stop it, she'd get eviscerated by the relentless creature. It fought just like a predatory animal. Like the lion which drags down and kills prey on the Savannah. No doubt Ruby was used to killing humans, but taking down a savage beast was an entirely different kind of fight. She had made a grave error by charging at it headlong with a knife.

Ruby began to feel woozy as she acutely noted her loss of blood, feeling herself go limp. However, she wouldn't go out like some weakling, oh no. Instead, she strained against the creature, feeling several blood vessels pop, muscles tear, and bones shift in their places. She knew she was most likely going to die here. There was no changing that. However, she would rail against it until the end.

Attempting to turn the knife back into the monster's tail, Ruby plunged the razor-sharp metal weapon as deep as possible. As she did this, she thrashed around, as much as she could, with the vampire restricting her, and shook her leg, attempting to dislodge the creature's mouth. However, she would eventually give out, and pass out, with everything fading to black. As she laid there, dying, she spoke one last time.

"Well....

shit."
