It's been three years since shit hit the fan. We're not one hundred percent sure of what happened. All we know is that everyone out of their teens-- usually twenty and older-- died from some sort of disease. Why it didn't affect children and teens is still a mystery, and as far as we can tell here in the city of Kano, Minnesota, nobody's even attempting to figure that out.

1. I already knew that Kano is the setting and that Kano isn't a real place in Minnesota. I'm wondering where it would be in relation to actual Minnesota. (Like, is it near Minneapolis, is it in a more rural area, etc.)
2. I'm not asking about the time in relation to the roleplay, I'm asking about the time relative to us, the players. Did it happen in the year 2015? Did it happen in 1999? Even just a year is fine.

Yes, I am from Minnesota as well. I may be a bit biased, but you usually see the apocalypse only in New York, California, and maybe a few other states. I wanted to do something a bit different.

In my mind, Kano is in the Southwestern region, close to the SD border more or less. This area is mostly farmland, but after three years, I'm sure that next to no one is growing crops or raising hogs and cattle anymore. While this area of the state doesn't have predators bigger than coyotes, nomads wander the countryside, ranging from hunter-gatherers to warrior tribes that attack and steal what they need or want.

The reason I ask all this is because I have a drifter character from the South that I'm working on, and I want to have a solid timeframe and location.

@Airalin No, unless the come in contact with a carrier, or a corpse infected with it. What I should have mentioned is that many animals can carry the disease.
