When we found E-12, the twelfth inhabitable planet we discovered beside Earth, we thought it would be a near-idyllic place to build a new colony. It had very few warm-blooded animals compared to Earth, and the ones that existed only came out during the day time, but every planet evolved life a bit differently. Ten thousand people arrived early one morning and set about the work of building enough prefabricated buildings and equipment that they could survive the night. As soon as the night chill entered the air, though, the creatures came to the camp, seeking the heat of the buildings and the warm-blooded prey inside. They attacked every source of significant heat and only a few hundred people managed to survive the night.

We soon learned from the dead bodies of the creatures that they could see heat, though any temperature over about 10 C (50 F) would cause them pain. We also discovered that they were weak to energy weapons, but that those weapons drew them to you, and decided that the small number of warm blooded creatures were the result of their hunting.

Now we are fleeing them, living in caves to try and hide our heat at night, and only using electricity or heat-generating devices outside the cave during the daytime. Though they are weak to energy weapons, using them, or even firearms, to fight them is suicide, so we must fight them with non-heat producing weapons like bows, spears, and swords.

What little tech we have is inside a cave. The entrance was sealed off with concrete and steel doors, but once it starts to get warm inside they can see the door and will attack. Depending on how cold it is outside, this usually happens between .9 and .0. Planetary time is given as a decimal, with 0 being the middle of the night (as of when they landed), and .5 being the middle of the day. This planet has a 30 hour day.

Wait me a second. Why is it that we stay here? And if we did have prefab buildings, shouldnt they protect us? Or whats about the ship we came here in the first place. And also if you have energy weapons, pretty sure you have gauus weapons too which are basically a no brainer in a situation like this. Neglegable heat, very high stopping power, and no sound. What about all of the above?@TheUnknowable

Questions:

"Why is it that we stay here?"
As in this planet? Because we don't have the fuel to go to another inhabitable planet. Or this area? Because they are probably everywhere on it, and our resources are here.

"And if we did have prefab buildings, shouldnt they protect us? Or whats about the ship we came here in the first place."
Prefabs will last for a little while, the ship a lot longer, but eventually they'll make it inside and kill us. We could say that we live in the lander (an actual interstellar ship would probably be too big to land) instead of a cave. It would have certain advantages, such as having electricity already. It would radiate a lot more heat, though, which draws more of them in.

"And also if you have energy weapons, pretty sure you have gauus weapons too which are basically a no brainer in a situation like this. Neglegable heat, very high stopping power, and no sound."
Also a good idea, but eventually the coils heat up. Could work for a few dozen shots or more, though. Also, batteries heat up as you use them. Body heat would also give you away, but only at short distances, so we'd only have to worry about it getting hotter than 98.6 degrees F.

I can change the original post to include fixes if you want. I like it when people find holes in my logic/RP premise, so I don't mind. Plus it will clarify it for the others.

@TheUnknowable Glad you made such a flawless answer. To be honest I already knew you had the answers but I was just testing. But still one more point. Wouldn't prefabs be built, so they keep as much heat in as possible for effiency? That would emit heat below 3-4 Celsius which is easy to mask even at night. Or I shoulf ask the better question. What is the annual norm for temperature. Cause that gives a good idea about how hot or cold the nights are.
Also did military come with us? Or was it only settlers.

Edit: No matter the answer, I like the RP. Will make a CS when I have time. Just asking around for possible solutions in the future :D

It's a pretty cold planet which gets just above freezing most nights, but warms up during the daytime, at least where we are. Prefabs would be well insulated, but once they saw the people they would be drawn to the area. I suppose if you went inside before it got too cold you could escape the notice of most of them, but it would be pretty risky, as any leak in your insulation or residual heat could draw them to you. The creatures live underground or in caves where it stays cool enough for them to live year-round. They also live in pretty large groups (maybe a dozen for the larger species, several dozen for the smaller species) so one of them spotting you would lead to you being swarmed.

@TheUnknowable Oh ok. That sounds pretty bad. I would personally stick to prefabs, but yk. So is it a valid tactic to literally fence yourself with a flaming fence so if they want to get close they are burnt to crisps. Just because you said they get hurt from heat. Of course it would attract a lot but YOLO.

So can I make a soldier character? Or strictly settlers?

@6slyboy6we would need security, though not an actual military. Maybe a hybrid character (skilled military officer, like a tech specialist or a ex soldier) or a police officer? I'm not sure if a warrior could be made to fit.

@TheUnknowable So I was thinking about a kind of an enforcer that they would send to deal with issues, once isolation got to people's mind. No military for sure, but some kind of a riot gear and a weapon that can be used to exercise lethal force as well as to stun someone.

@TheUnknowable Yes, kinda like a SWAT officer. An armor, a pistol and a shock baton. Something along those lines at least.

I guess I'd better work on my character. I just need to figure out what kind I want to be. I'm thinking survivalist.
