"So you mean a couple of nobodies?" He scooted closer to her. "As in, hobos?"
"Don't you think you're a little more high class then that?" He brushed her hair away from her eye, so he could look at both, making sure not to touch any skin.
Jen looked down. "They were kind. And they were a meal, and almost willing in a way. I gave them what they wanted, and they gave me what I needed," she said.
He started to play with the grass in front of him. "I never really had friends myself. Not in kindergarten, not in middle school and not in high school. They were all afraid of me." He was kind of scolding himself for actually being honest like that, but this is the first time he has ever been able to actually share this with someone. "My father always told me they were a waste of time and that they would only ever get in your way in life. I didn't want to believe that and continued trying to make friends." He cast down his gaze. "It didn't matter. "Freak", "Psycho", "Monster", those were the things they'd call me. They never even gave me a chance to show them that I could truly be a good friend..." He realized he was running his mouth off, and stopped there before he went into the really deep stuff. 'Jeez, I've never been so open in my life. Not even to my parents. I guess I can just hope that sharing something personal will make her trust me more.'
"Well we won't call that. I won't call you that. But you have to try and be a better person. It might be hard at times, but it'll be worth it in the end," Jen said, staring into his eyes with a little smile on her face.
He actually felt pretty touched by her words. 'Don't cry, don't cry, don't cry' He kept repeating in his head like a mantra. He completely forgot what his original goal was. He looked her in the eyes. "There's nothing I can ever truly change about myself. The way I am is how it goes. Despite that though... would you..." He was embarrassed and looked away. "Would you like to be my friend?" He held out his hand.
Veronica sat inside, sitting and twiddling her thumbs as the others finished the course. Then she realized Jen and Kiiros were outside, alone. The guards would protect her from Kiiros if he tried anything... Veronica was trying to be reasonable but decided to hurry over to a guard and ask to go outside. "Why do you all want to go outside? Fine, here you go." The guard let her outside.
His eyes actually began to water. Never had anybody agreed to be his friend before, but the moment he felt her hand grab his, it's like everything just melted away. He quickly rubbed his eyes with the sleeve of his other arm, letting go of her hand and quickly standing up, all cheery and happy as if playing off the whole emotional thing. He didn't like being seen as weak in any way whatsoever. "*ahem* SO.... Should we head back inside?" For the moment he wanted to actually value her friendship... but knew himself better than that. He was most likely going to use her when the time calls for it, whether for his own sick amusement or just to do his dirty work.
