Things were settling down in Eagle Rock. During the month Eagle Rock University first started, students from all over flocked to the small town. It was hard to go anywhere without stepping on some one's toes. The cars on the roads doubled and the stores were sold out of things like toilet paper and notebooks. The long time residents of Eagle Rock knew when to hunker down and prepare for the hoards. They also knew when it was safe to emerge.

The safe zone was usually two weeks into the semester, as school really got into the swing of homework and deadlines. The month was of February was winding down. It wasn't quite three weeks into the semester, more like two and a half. It was a Monday.

The crisp winter bite was still in the air. Forecasts were staying that winter might linger until April or later. A clear sign of this was the snow still on the ground. There hadn't been much snowfall during the winter. It had been too cold for that most of the time. Mainly the snow on the ground was old, dingy and blown flat, nearly a sheet of ice, by the ever present wind.

Lola was bundled up against the cold as she peered out her window. According to the last message she had received from Mr. Dresden he would arrive soon. Chances are he got lost, or went off the road. Wyoming was terrible with snow on the roads. Ian was off with his friends, undoubtedly raising a ruckus somewhere. The old fool.

The older woman's lips quirked into a smile at the thought. She let the blinds closed, to retain warmth, and turned back to the TV. The news played new only at certain hours in a small town. Currently it was repeating the morning news. The main story was out at Eagle Rock Campus.

Lola's shiver had nothing to do with the cold. Nasty rumors had been floating around about a strange illness hitting students at the university. First they'd come down with what appeared to be a common cold. Then they'd slip into a coma. The earliest known stricken student had just passed away. The doctors were urging everyone to get vaccinations and if they did develop a cold, to get checked out by the hospital.

The whole thing was very odd. And disturbing. It was what propelled Lola to finally contact Mr. Dresden. At first it had started with strange sightings up at Yellowstone. Which matched the strange winter. Then the minor earthquakes started. And now this illness. It was the talk of the town, and all the towns nearby certainly.

The sound of a car in the drive had Lola up and heading to the door. She didn't move very quickly in her old age. Farming had taken it's toll on her body. Her knees didn't bend and she was slightly hunched, but she was still full of life.

ding dong

The door bell rang and Lola opened the door.

PEYTON

Peyton slipped on a patch of ice. His feet went up, his ass and head went down. And with a resounding THUD he hit the gravel pathway that lead from the east side of campus to the west. Five minutes late for Bio101, was now going to be ten, as he felt a twinge of pain -- not only in his pride -- in his ankle. That's going to be sore by morning, he thought to himself. As he checked his surroundings he was relieved to find that this 'walkway' was empty. At least no one saw that, he thought gratefully.

His book bag laid only a few feet to his left, but his books, binders and papers a;id scattered out into the brush and snow. Just great, my five page essay on 'The Anatomy of the Ficus' is now ruined, he sighed as he picked it out of a half-melted puddle of ice and water. Professor Springs willsurely fail ke a second time -- he couldn't risk to fail Bio again, his job at Trade Winds didn't pay him enough to retake the class a third time.

As he picked himself, and his belongings, off the ground a crisp breeze wrapped around him. Though he knew he should be cold -- after all, a leather biker's jacket can only keep you so warm -- he felt somewhat comforted by the icy chill in the air. It was odd really, as he thought about it. In all the years of travelling from place to place, the Lees had always stayed in the South, where it was warm. But it never really felt like home, the warmth just made him feel restricted and sluggish. Here, in the cool mountains of Yosemite, he felt vibrant and free, albeit a bit clumsy, this ice thing was an issue.

Once he was a reasonable distance beyond the door, Bernard stretched his arms toward the ceiling and let out a massive yawn. As much as he loved the World Philosophy course, Professor Michaels' lecturing voice seemed specifically designed to put his students to sleep. Considering the fact that Bernard had been up most of the night reading, he considered it impressive that he had avoided passing out at his desk. Thankfully, it was his last class for the day. Checking his watch before heading down the hall, he confirmed that he had time enough to stop for coffee before he needed to head for the book store. As he neared the doors to go outside, he pulled up the hood of his oversized hoodie. The garment was thick and warm, but wouldn't have been enough to stave off the bitter cold for anyone else.

Silently thanking his heritage, Bernard stepped out into the sunlight. The cheap slip-on shoes he wore chilled almost immediately as he started to move along the walkway, causing him to only really feel the cold on his feet. A breeze picked up as he walked, and he turned his head to keep his face out of the wind. When he turned his eyes forward again, he noticed another student ahead of him picking up some papers that had been scattered. Waving and smiling sympathetically as he passed, the large young man only changed his course enough to avoid running into the other student or stepping on his belongings.

Looks like a rough day, he thought as he continued on, bringing a hand up to his neck to absently run his fingers along the smooth glass beads of his talisman. It was a steadily noticeable weight across his collarbones and the back of his neck, a constant reminder to keep his head in even the worst situations. So far, he'd been lucky here in Eagle Rock. With the exception of a park Ranger or two, not another soul had seen his bear form. Even better, he'd been able to keep his transformations overall to a minimum. There were times that the itch to get out of his human skin for a while just couldn't be ignored though.

Allowing his mind to wander and thoughts to drift, Bernard made his way off-campus. He'd walked the path enough to simply let his feet carry him toward his favorite coffee shop and eventually his job, which was further down the same street. He considered the employment at the book store to be incredibly cushy. Any time he wasn't stocking the shelves or helping a customer he got to sit behind the counter and read. It helped that the old man who ran the place couldn't be nicer. George was a great guy, and had enough of a sense of humor not to be bothered by Bernard's near constant referring to him simply as 'Old Man.'
