The dwarves had been caught completely off guard by the attack of the dragon. They had been safe and secure in their stronghold in Erebor for so many years, they had almost become disillusioned with the rest of the world, thinking they were almost untouchable. But even with all their warriors and weapons, they could not stand against the might of a Firedrake of the North. Smaug decimated any attack they tried to put forth to protect their homeland, and the King's treasure horde.

Seeing that it was hopeless to keep fighting, and only lose more lives, Thorin, the young dwarf prince, pulled his grandfather Thror to safety before he could dive into the swirling mass of treasure after the Arkenstone which he had lost grip on, and called the retreat. As the dwarves ran out of the smoking remains of the once grand city of Erebor, Thorin looked up to see the host of elves appearing on the crest of the hill.

Thranduil stopped as they reached the hill that overlooked the valley which Erebor lay in, and was taken completely by surprise at what he saw. He had long suspected the dwarves' greed would draw one, or more, of the dragons back down from their lairs in the North (and many times had tried to warn the great King Thror of such an occurence, but he would take no heed of the Elvenking's words) ; but he had not counted on it being so soon. They were unprepared, they could not take on a dragon with the few infantry that accompanied him now. He could not risk the lives of his subjects for such a futile endeavour; they would surely all be killed. And he had many other worries on his mind, he could not leave his niece and son to rule a kingdom on their own if he were to fall in battle now, they were too young, not ready. So when the dwarf prince spotted them and frantically raised his arms into the air, crying out in desperation. "HELP US!!!" the Elvenking could make no other decision but to turn back, and order his forces to draw back to the ailing Greenwood.

As all of the people of the Lonely Mountain were driven from the homeland by the deadly Necromancer of the North, crouched at the mountain top, a winged feminine figure was elegantly watching the disaster before her. The ember of the fire reflected from her yellow-green eyes, making them glow, and reflected off of her sharp, metal finger cuffs that dug into the rock of the mountain. The Raven-black catsuit she wore with a few feathers being embedded on the outfit, matched with the horned headdress, made her represent pure evil. She wasn't phased when she watched the destruction before her.

Robbed of their homeland, the dwarves of Erebor wandered the wilderness. The once mighty people were brought low.

Spreading the huge feathered wings, the feminine being took flight, away from the mountain.

The young dwarf prince took work where he could find it, laboring in the villages of men. But always, he remembered the mountain smoke beneath the moon, the trees like torches blazing bright, where he had seen dragon fire in the sky, and a city turn to ash. And he never forgave, and he never forgot.

Sixty years earlier, during the Third Age of the Shire, a Hobbit named Bilbo Baggins, is siting on a branch of a tree, smoking from his pipe. "Good morning", he spoke to an elderly gentlemen, who was his friend, Gandalf.

"To think I should live to be 'good morning'd' by Belladonna Took's son, as if I were doing nothing more than selling buttons at the door!" the wizard Gandalf exclaimed in great agitation, leaning heavily against his staff as his sharp eyes burned into the young hobbit from beneath his bushy grey eyebrows.

The Hobbit shrugged before he got up from the branch. "All of them at once, I suppose", he said as he went to go grab the mail that was right in front of his small house. He looked at the wizard, almost feeling an uncomfortable ease. "Can I help you?", Bilbo went to open his door.

"That remains to be seen." Gandalf grunted as he leaned forward closer to Bilbo. "I am looking for someone to share in an adventure." the wizard explained, wondering how the hobbit would react to such a request. The Baggins family had always been known for being, as they called it, "respectable hobbits" who didn't bother themselves with the affairs of the Big Folk outside of the borders of the Shire...however Bilbo Baggins also had the blood of the Took family; who were far more adventurous in spirit. Perhaps it would be enough to tempt him.

Bilbo Baggins may have the blood of a Took and a Baggins, but he wasn't a far, far adventurer beyond the Shire. "An adventure?" This did poke his attention a little bit, but wasn't too submerged or thrilled. "No, I don’t imagine anyone west of Bree, would have much interest in adventures. Nasty, disturbing, uncomfortable things. Make you late for dinner!", it was true. The village of Bree was only discomforting if you were actually traveling with a person from the village itself. Not to mention the Rangers.

"I think it would be very good for you." Gandalf argued as he looked at Bilbo critically. He was determined to make Bilbo come along on this endeavor whether the hobbit himself cared to or not. "And most amusing for me." he concluded with a light chuckle to himself as he thought of how the rest of the company might react to the hobbit.

"We do not want any adventures here, thank you. Not today, not…", Bilbo paused. "I suggest you try over the hill or…across the water", he recommends just before he walks into his little Hobbit home and locks the door. Right after he does so, he hears a noise at his door. Looking out the window, the wizard was still standing there.

Very well. Gandalf thought to himself. If Bilbo was going to be that way inclined, he would have to make him meet the rest of the group, perhaps that would persuade him. Lifting up his staff, the wizard walked across to the newly-painted green door of the hobbit's home, and carved a strange rune there. This would make sure the company who were coming to the meeting would find the right house. After peering once more through the window at the hobbit, which made him jump something quite frightful, the wizard simply vanished from view. He would be back later that night when the others arrived.

Later that evening, Bilbo was just cooking his dinner until he was interrupted by the doorbell. Finding a dwarf standing there, "Dwalin", he bowed. "At your service". Bilbo wasn't expecting company nor did he know who this was. The clothing was not of Hobbit descent, it was of the dwarven brethren. "Uh…Bilbo…Baggins…at yours", the Hobbit awkwardly introduced himself back to him, just before Dwalin stepped inside. "Do we know each other?", he asked him. "No. Which way, laddie? Is it down here?", the dwarf asked. "Is…Is what down where?" "Supper. He said there’d be food, and lots of it" "He…he said? Who said?" Dwalin was entering the kitchen now. This was not expected for the Hobbit. The doorbell rings again. As soon as Bilbo opens it, there was another dwarf standing there. This one looked elderly with a fading white beard. "Balin. At your service" "Good evening" "Yes. Yes, it is. Although I think it might rain later. Am I late?" "Late…for what?" The two dwarves continue to ignore him by raiding the pantry. The doorbell rings once again, and this time, there were two dwarves. Possibly younger than the previous two. "Fili", one of them says. He was blond, braided in some places of his hair, along with matching facial hair: beard and mustache.

Beside him stood another dwarf of similar facial features, they must have been siblings. The only difference between them was that this dwarf had raven black hair instead of blonde. "And Kili." the other added to the introduction as they both bowed, and spoke then in unison. "At your service."

"You must be Mr. Baggins" "No! You can’t come in, you’ve come to the wrong house", the Hobbit retorted as he goes to shut the door, but Kili stops him. "What?! Has it been canceled?" "No one told us" "Can…! No, nothing’s been canceled" "That’s a relief", at this, they both let themselves in, brushing passed Bilbo as if they owned the place. "Careful with these, I just had them sharpened", the blond told the Hobbit before placing their swords in his hands. "It’s nice, this place. Did you do it yourself?", Kili complimented as he looked around. "Uh…no, it’s been in the family for years--That’s my mother’s glory box, can you please not do that?!" "Fili, Kili, come on, give us a hand" "Let’s shove this in the hole, or otherwise we’ll never get everyone in" "Ev…everyone?! How many more are there?" Once again, the doorbell rings. Bilbo was just at the end of his rope. "Oh, no! No, no. There’s nobody home! Go away, and bother somebody else! There’s far too many dwarves in my dining room as it is. If…if this is some blockhead’s idea of a joke, I can only say, it is in very poor taste!", right as Bilbo opens the door, a bunch of dwarves fall through onto the floor, behind them Gandalf pokes his head through the door, along with a feminine face. Looking at Gandalf, he was exasperated, just knowing that he was involved with this strange intrusion. "I told you this was a bad idea", the female told the wizard next to her with a narrow of her yellow-green eyes.

Gandalf shook his head and chuckled in amusement as he smiled at Bilbo as if this had been planned all along between them. "Nonsense." he spoke to the woman standing next to him. "You'll find he's more than capable, come let's get inside out of the wind." the wizard added as he stepped over the dwarves on the threshold who were grumbling and cursing amongst themselves as they picked themselves up off the floor and brushed the dust off their clothes.

Groaning the woman followed, walking over the company with her elegant legs that appear to be covered with a black catsuit which had a few traces of feathers being embedded into the clothing. With her head down, she managed to get through the door with her curled horns kept down. She didn't get too far inside, but just kept herself intrigued near the fireplace. "Explain this to me, wizard", Bilbo demanded.

"Now now Bilbo, no need to get so upset!" Gandalf protested with raised eyebrows. "They're quite a merry gathering, once you get used to them. All will be explained shortly when the leader of the party arrives."

"I don’t want to get used to them. Look at the state of my kitchen! There’s mud trod in the carpet, they…they’ve pillaged the pantry! I’m not even gonna tell you what they’ve done in the bathroom, they’ve all but destroyed the plumbing! I don’t understand what they’re doing in my house!", Bilbo was now rambling. This wasn't helping. "Excuse me, I’m sorry to interrupt. But what should do with my plate?", one of them asked the Hobbit. "Here you go, Ori, give it to me", the one named Fili from earlier responded. He threw it to his brother, who also throws it to another dwarf in the kitchen, they continued doing this with all the plates. "Excuse me! That’s my mother’s Westfarthing pottery, it’s over a hundred years old!", Bilbo told them, almost going into a panic. The female heard music coming from the kitchen and she stayed in the shadows behind the kitchen door frame. "And…and, ca…can you not do that, you’ll blunt them!" "Ooh, d’you hear that, lads? He says we’ll blunt the knives!" "Blunt the knives, bend the forks" "Smash the bottles and burn the corks" "Chip the glasses and crack the plates. That’s what Bilbo Baggins hates! Cut the cloth and tread on the fat. Leave the bones on the bedroom-mat, pour the milk on the pantry-floor, splash the wine on every door, dump the crocks in a boiling bowl, pound them up with a thumping pole. When you’ve finished, if any are whole, send them down the hall to roll!" Gandalf and the female were chuckling in amusement as they watch the dwarves clean up the dishes and cutlery as they sing. "That’s what Bilbo Baggins hates!", the dwarves laughed as Bilbo walks into the kitchen to see all his plates and cutlery all cleaned and stacked.

Gandalf simply smiled cheerfully at Bilbo, thankful that the dwarves didn't do any of the awful things that they had said in the song, or else the hobbit would never agree to go. He counted the dwarves who were present and noticed that there was still one missing. Thorin had still not arrived.

No sooner had Gandalf thought this than there was a loud, thumping knock on the door that made all the other dwarves go silent.

As soon as the door was thumped against, and the room turned silent, all that was heard was the shuffling of the female, who has seemed to scatter and retreat into the shadows as if there was something to fear. Her outfit perfectly camouflaging in the darkness, except for her eyes. She wasn't to be feared by, not anymore, but this one dwarf wasn't one she was ready to come across.

"He is here." Gandalf murmured as he crossed the room, with Bilbo behind him and went to open the door. On the doorstep stood a dwarf with hair as black as the other dwarf who had come with his twin earlier, and silver-grey eyes that seemed to bore straight into your soul. He glowered up at the wizard as he stepped over the threshold.
"Gandalf. I thought you said this place would be easy to find; I lost my way, twice. Wouldn't have found it at all if it hadn't been for that mark on the door."

"Mark on the d-?!" Bilbo gawked at the dwarf in shock, then protested indignantly. "There is no mark on that door, I assure you sir, it was painted just last week!"
"There is a mark, Bilbo. I put it there myself." the wizard confessed.

Unknown to them, the female felt invisible to the rest of the company, hopefully able to make herself known. She was stuck in the darkness, but she was close to Gandalf. Finally able to walk out, she thought that introductions would be made first. "I'm not liking this at all", she whispered to the wizard, clearly uncomfortable in this kind of situation. Having a old grudge see his vendetta wasn't one she wanted to cross paths with.
