@Volenvradica
Link to Character

Decided to take her out of WIP status to completed, though I may fill in the personality and history later.

Ended up completing both of them.

I still think Personality and History should be compulsory, not optional. To not have either is like you just built a character without personality and history (which sounds redundant, but it's silly).

Imagine yourself as a person without a personality or backstory? Or someone you know who is a blank slate with only their skills and appearance. They are nothing more than an empty vessel and uninteresting to be around.

@Sho Minazuki That's all fine and dandy, but some people prefer to explore personality/background within the RP. I mean, I always have a solid personality or background for my characters in my head--and I'm sure others have something similar even if they don't write it all down--so I don't really care if I write it down for people to see (though I typically do). Just because it's not written, doesn't mean it's not there. And most people don't care until it's expressed in character anyway. Because I mean, really, what does history / personality do for anyone? It's not like other characters should or even can interact with you knowing this information. They gotta discover it.

TLDR: personality / history should be optional because it's pointless and dull compared to actual RP.

Because it's not written down tells me you have absolutely no idea how to articulate your personality in words, which presents a problem when making character interactions. Ever tried to wing a long speech? Given that's much more difficult, you'll be wrought with inconsistencies, not to mention it makes it difficult for other players to interact with you. Basically, you should be able to at least give a few sentences on how you want your character to act. If your character's personality is in your mind, and that just because it's not written down doesn't mean it's not actually there, then what's stopping you from actually you know... Writing it down if it's there?

Backstory is important in this RP too, remember, the premise is that we are "disgraced hunters". How did we fall from grace to begin with? That's why it's even more important in this RP than others, because of the premise of the RP requiring specific types of backstory.

If that's what it tells you, then you're assuming that a person is putting down everything they know. And as someone who reuses and develops and reuses characters, I'd be comfortable jumping into a RP without even a sheet, lol. But like I said, I don't mind writing it down, but I definitely don't think it's necessary for me or any players to RP

And I mean, backstory is important in any RP. Your character never just spawns outta no where... But as long as you know it, I don't see why its important for anyone else to. Save for the GM, of course. And proving competence to the GM is really the only viable reason I see for requiring personality / background.

Your reasoning has so far been "because I don't think it's necessary", that's a pretty lazy reason, and I think it's because there really is no good reason for you to not put either in. I can get behind an RP that really doesn't require either and plays like a rogue-like, or is a short RP for the sake of doing certain or particular types of roleplay that doesn't need a rich story or world.

But this is neither of those. This is an RP that has multiple players and characters, in a fairly decided setting, that has it's own lore and world to draw from. A backstory and personality is very important, especially the backstory.

Just because you don't think it's necessary doesn't mean it actually isn't. I'll let the GM decide on this, but I've made my case.

If it's in the vein to keep characters a mystery, that's even worse. There should still be some way your character acts, like an enigmatic warrior can still show to be honorable, yet extreme, but still hide their true colors, and backstory? Your character has got to have made a name for themselves somehow, or been known some way. If there are secrets to their backstory, simply be vague or omit those parts, and send them to the GM.

Basically, even if you wanted to omit stuff or keep yourself a mystery, you can STILL do that. Mysterious characters in literature aren't mysterious because we know nothing about them, it's because we know a little about them, and what little we know, makes us want to know more.

I don't appreciate the cynicism, but I don't relish in inadvertently making this a bigger deal than it should be either, so you keep your snark behind your fingers untyped.

I'll just go talk to the GM then.

@Sho Minazuki@Kidd Let me just put an end to this here. The GM and I decided Personality and Backstory to be optional for those who wish to reveal it as the story goes on. If you want to include one or both, it is the players choice. We won't change it due to one persons opinion unfortunately. Unless every one is opposed to it, it will not be changing. End of discussion.

Please do not escalate any more small matters in the future. :)

I'm actually more worried about a player's character breaking off from the premise that's been decided. Are players still required to speak with the GM about how their hunter/huntress came to be where they were/fell from grace?

It hasn't been told to me whether or not it's required but I believe it's optional. Don't worry about the characters, trust your fellow players to stick to what we have set up.

I mean if you look at it in terms of like the show, no one knows anything about the characters at the start. Even to this day, characters good and evil, we absolutely love, and yet we know nothing about where they came from and where they're going.

I believe that giving as much freedom as players can get when making their characters, will make this rp a great one. But, that still remains to be seen.

Let's address problems as they arise instead of trying tochange things in an attempt to avoid them. We'll learn as we go along.

@Kidd no problem, I read through it all and appreciate you keeping it respectful. I simply wanted it officially over is all, before it got to a point where people got really upset, you know?

Now it's not that I think it's an issue of trust, but more assurance, that people play by the rules. Trusting the players is all well and good, but people who do not wish to abide by certain things will appear. If they slip through it becomes a bigger mess than if you gated and filtered it out to begin with. I know this from experience, and watching other RPs. It is certainly a reality that needs to be considered.

Ugh, now it's overdramatized. Look, backstory, personality, just, when it comes to writing I think these things are very important for any character as a whole, and this is out of principle, that this is a literary thing.

But for something like a D&D campaign where you just make an adventurer and go, not so much.

Ditto. Trust is a large part of things and if you don't trust people to know what they want from their own character then they probably won't trust you back. Let people make their own mind up on whether they want to display personality and history or not.
