Roger was a simple guy who could be easily lost, especially when it came to the realm of the female gender. When Katya started to treat him differently, he tried figuring out why. Was it because she blamed him for how badly the simulation went? Did he do something he didn't know about, like eating something she was saving for later? Did she just decide she didn't like him? Well whatever it was, she wasn't saying what she was so peeved about. However, during practice she would drop the behavior. After a couple days of this he made it a point to actively avoid her as much as possible. If she walked in the room he would drop whatever he was doing and leave, or end a conversation early. He just wasn't going to deal with her shit if he could help it.

When it came to the newcomers, Roger did what he usually did when confronted with the idea of meeting with new authority figures: stand tight, shut up and don't get into trouble. He didn't try interacting with the giant man with no teeth, or chat with any of the other soldiers there, and when the sergeant finally revealed herself as a little girl, no older than say 6 he did his best to not let his surprise show. Tiny though she may be, she was really cute. But something stopped him from completely going along with that train of thought, and that was the fact that since joining this program he had seen a lot of crazy bio-engineering shit. For all he knew, this child was a 35 year old woman who got de-aged into a little kid by some Lorenzo-esque scientist. Maybe she's also a clone like Sigma. Who knew?

Roger's eye caught Serah's salute, which jogged his brain enough to remember that the child was also a sergeant on top of a likely freakish science experiment gone right(?). He mimicked the salute as well, probably looking pretty dumb given the rest of the circumstances, but maybe staving off potential ire from the pintsized officer. Or not. These high ranking officers were impossible to make heads or tails of. Maybe he'd have been better off sticking to staying in the navy. At least everything would make sense.

Jason "Phoenix" Diabolus | Squad Sigma Pilot

Note: Because I took so long, this post will start with what he was doing mid-way through the week, as I was working on that post.

It always happened this way, no matter what happened. The boy kicked at the front of the simulator, even as it opened up to release him back into the world. No matter how many times he ran the simulation, based off the combat recordings at Nazareth; Doom always died. No matter what he did, his friends would perish. He would order Xane to hold back, and the Cruxi would get a shot off, killing Celeste or Marshall. Sometimes he survived, sometimes he died alongside his friends. He was always unable to save them, but in the end all burned in that horrid green light. Wiped out in a single moment as if by an act of God. But not any God he knew of, this one was violent and genocidal. This one burned his home and his friends. He couldn't do anything to save them, and every time he could almost hear the screams as they spent their final moments burning in the hellfire.

After a brief moment, Jason leaned back into the pod and punched in some commands. The simulator closed back up, and as he closed his eyes the same simulation began to start back over. When he opened his eyes, Jason greeted by the familiar fields where he had lined up Doom to keep the Cruxi from entering the city. "Xane. Stay out of their range, but keep an eye for any kinks in their armor. Give me a weak spot. Do not attack, do I make myself clear?" Jason ordered as he began to spin up Ribasu's mighty Railgun. "Celeste, keep the Cruxi on thier toes and at range. Marshall, if any get close then take care of them." The boy ordered as the twin enemy mechs landed, followed by that terrible beast. This time, instead of engaging the beast, Jason took the time to aim then fire a charged shot at one of the two enemy units. With a thunderous roar, and a shudder throughout the frame; a sudden strike of lightning tore across the open space and punched clean through the War Machine's chest. Then, just as had happened before, Celeste took a shot and completely obliterated her War Machine. The shot rang out as it blew the War Machine's arm clean off, then set off an explosion that destroyed the machine completely.

A small smile grew on his lips as he heard Xane take-off, hoping that perhaps he would be able to survive this encounter would end in his favor at last. However; that was where things immediately went wrong, as Marshall's massive frame lurched towards the Cruxi Warbeast as it charged towards the frames. However, the pilot seemed to misjudge his calculations and wasn't able to plant himself in time to stop the forward momentum of the charging beast. With a high-pitched, painful, screech; the beast tackled the frame to the ground. The tentacles from the beast tearing into the monstrosity of metal. Through the comms, Jason could hear the panicked screams of his ally, moments before static followed by silence. The beast taking a chance to tear the cockpit open and kill his friend once again. Jason's hands flew across the controls as he tried to aim his weapon for revenge, but Ribasu's main weapon was not finished cooling down, and he couldn't in time as the beast suddenly set its gaze onto him and lunged forward. "Celeste, I need help!" He barked into the comms, but help didn't come in time. The beast leaped onto his mech and the two tumbled to the ground. As they hit the ground, his silos opened and soon enough a flurry of missiles tore the beast the shreds.

Jason's screen went black, simulating that he went unconscious as the mech was blown backward from the blast. Pain tore through his body, just as if he had been burned by the explosions. The damage reports flowed in, covering his screen with details on various armor breaches, and the failing of some systems from the wave of explosions that had flowed over Ribasu. As the smoke settled, Jason forced the mech to slowly get to its feet, various creeks and groans of metal could be heard clearly through the cockpit. Various fluids were seen leaking onto the ground, sparks and small flames were seen as coming from the open wounds along the mech's body. This was the point that Jason always worried about, where the JONAH appaeared, soon followed by the plasma fire that destroyed his friends everytime. As the ship came in, Jason immdiately ordered a disengage. The trio began heading towards the ship, but the War Machine that had been hit by Jason wasn't finished. The mech set off in a wild attack and openly fired on the trio. Jason watched as Celeste, the girl he had grown to care about quite a bit recently, took a heavy plasma shot to her thrusters. The reaction causing her mech to immdiately explode, killing her before she could react. Jason screamed, the pain of her death as fresh as it had been that day. But within seconds, he was docking onboard the JONAH. Having witnessed the death of everybody he cared about once again, Jason felt defeated. Preparing for the sim to come to an end, but there was one second as the sim closed down, something he heard coming through the comms.

"Shit. Celeste and Marshall? What are we gonna do now, man?"

The voice of Xane, the boy Jason had forgot about being in the simulation spoke in his ear. His friend had survived, and they'd be able to take on anything. The Cruxi couldn't stop them, their bond was forged in the fires of war.

Then the sim faded to black and the simulator opened. Jason was confronted once more with reality, Xane was dead. No matter what he did, Jason could not change that. But still, the sim had showed him that he could have saved some of them. He had to get better, had to prevent others from passing. As he climbed out of the sim, he looked back towards the pod. "I'll make all of you proud. I promise." he said softly before heading back to his quarters, deciding to get some rest after the training.

Looking up from the small counter, Jason studied the digital clock nearby and swore under his breath. He had spent so long working on ideas for upgrades, he was pretty sure that he would be running late for the briefing. Setting down the drafting materials, he looked at the upgrade before saving it to the tablet he had been working on. Sliding the pad into his pack, he got up and cast a look up towards Ribasu, then at little workshop he had set up. "Soon, we can get an upgrade for ya. Become an even more of a badass." He said to the silent mech before slinging the bag on his shoulder and heading straight for the briefing at a rather quick pace. Fortunately, Jason was able to make it to the briefing before things really got kicked off. He found a place about midway back in the room, and briefly looked around to see if he knew others. But, before he could do anything, he heard voices and saw the two women enter the room. His eyes immediately caught on the mature one, and he briefly debated trying to say something. But figured that out of place, though he would gladly have asked her on a date anytime.

Then he noticed the little girl getting the piggy-back ride. He started to wonder why there was a little girl, but soon enough she spoke up and stated that she was the sergeant. He immediately wanted to point out that he doubted one so young would even have the slightest idea about good strategy or be fit in any way to lead a unit. However, that was also not his duties. Once the floor was opened for questions, Jason looked over towards Zim as he asked his question. That... was not terribly smart of him to do. Questioning the superiors, that is. Jason certainly wished to know the armaments of their frames, but doubted know was the time. Seeing the first man's response, Jason was a bit surprised that is was so... positive. Giving a professional salute, Jason opted to remain silent. Later he could ask about their frame's specs.

Krista Reynolds

The shuttle captain's voice rang through the passenger compartment, announcing the approaching shift into local gravity. Krista stowed her duffel bag of belongings before strapping herself into the shuttle's seat. She flipped through her datapad, reviewing the Solaire Battalion's recent history. "Oh, so that's what happened to Archer..." she said with a mild sense of loss.

She skimmed until she got to the section of the briefing on their most recent battle, with The Mist. Even through the dry writing of the after action reports, the numbers were staggering. She'd spent most of the week prepping for the transfer from her old unit to this new one. From what she'd seen, it did seem that the Hou Yi's Plasma Cannon could be a effective countermeasure should it come back.

Still, the damage the Mist did to the squad was worrying. She'd been part of a research project, refining weapon ideas for basic viability before they were deployed. This would be where she faced actual combat for the first time. "No better place to test then in the field?" her previous CO had explained. "Besides, you've always said you wanted to actually fight, right?"

She couldn't argue with that, not that she could refuse an order either way. As the shuttle made its final approach for landing she tried to quell the butterflies in her stomach. She would be an 'FNG' to the group, not to mention she'd be showing up at the end of a week off so she'd have to hit the ground running. By the time they landed, it was evening. She was directed to the sleeping quarters and where to be tomorrow before she went to sleep.

The next morning, Krista ate breakfast in the cafeteria with the other cadets, keeping to herself as she ate. Similarly she stayed towards the back of the group in the briefing hall, trying to get used to attaching faces to names. "Katya...Sarah... Mai..." She hoped that there would be an opportunity to introduce herself properly later. Zim caught her attention with his questioning, and by the fact she was sure that she might be a hair taller than him.

Paladin had arrived early and sat far in the corner, having little in the way of friends. He wondered if they were avoiding him because he was not Ariin or they were simply busy. He had trained his new body, having learned the ways of human life he still found it rather annoying.

Paladin sat alone watching the new additions, he noted the taller female had good symmetry and wider hips than most females. He found this be aesthetically pleasing, however he knew Ariin would think different. The smaller female had veteran medals and commendations, she was to small to serve as anything but a pilot he deduced. He then noted as well she was rather tiny and cute, like the puppies they trained into guard dogs on Mars.

He understood now that these were there new officers, accepting this quickly and with no hesitation. He looked around at the others in the room, some seemed to question the new additions, Paladin had a more personal matter he wished to discuss. Standing he spoke carefully and with respect. "I would like to know if you apprised of pilot Ariin's... Situation."

He stood a moment then spoke again, he knew it might not have been his place. "I unsure if I will able to fight to Ariin's standard. I have proven to be a far weaker pilot than my partner." He stopped, knowing his next request could border on treason as he had been told no to it before. "I'd to request a chance to link with Paladin through hard line once more and return Ariin to full functionality." He said, before the entire squad. He knew it would be a yes, a no, or they would toss him in the brig throwing away the key.

Sigma walked her way thoughtfully after Lorenzo's talk. The whole ordeal left her a bitter aftertaste. Yet, she had to lick her wounds and plunge forward. After exiting the allocated quarters, the young girl absent-mindledly headed towards the pilot' quarters. Temporary as they were, Sigma was soon lost in the maze of corridors.

"You seem lost, doll." An all-so familiar voice whispered at her back. Her own voice, but deepened by puberty. Only one person had that voice, and the implications were terrifying on their own.

"Irina..." Sigma flinched, the years of training and conditioning seizing her motor control as she went stiff like a plank. Her eyes darted from side to side, fixing her stare into her hellish trainer, as she advanced towards her.

"I've heard you've been awfully busy. Saving citizens. Killing Cruxi superweapons, even becoming some sort of heroic dolly." The woman sneered, her smile growing wild. "And yet you are here, moping around like some faildoll. Ain't that a shame." She clenched her fist, snapping her fingers in the process.

Here comes the punch. Sigma said, readying her face for the disciplinary hit to her face.

That never came to be, as the Ace simply did a light jab on Sigma's shoulder. "Stiff upper lip, kid. As some people say." Irina added. "That was no slouch what you did. Do you think that medal of yours comes in cereal boxes?" Irina sneered, as she began to walk away. "You know... you did well there. So don't think on what you could've done. Think on what you can do now." The older woman added as she began to walk away.

"Irina..." Sigma said, wide eyed still not believing those were Spanova's words.

"What? Even if you're a clone which i hate, and completely idiotic, you've killed a Cruxi superweapon. That is good. Keep up the good work. Of course... you probably could use a nudge or two." Spanova said. "So kid, listen. I've decided. I'm going to give you a MORS system and the Sword of Luna blueprints. I've sorted it out with the wrench monkeys."

"HUH!?" Sigma looked visiblely surprised, eyes wide.

"No buts. I won't allow a second-rate knockoff. If it must be, -it- has to be first rate." Irina sneered. "So, get ready to use those aswell."

"..." The fourteen year old hesitated, unable to know what to say. "Thank you..."

"Don't mention it." Irina snorted as she began her walk. "Give 'em hell, kiddo." She added. "You know, I never got why you like Moby Dick so much. Pinocchio is a much better story for you." The Ace hero laughed as she left. "I've gotta places to save, so catch you later!"

Sigma mused in her standing position about the events. Supposedly they were going to be briefed with veteran reinforcements in Solaire. She had kept out of the small talk for the time being, and she only snapped in a militar salute once the other pilots entered out of habit before anything else. The sight of a ... little girl being carted around made the young pilot do a double take. She stood there, incredously as she went before her spiel, her mind completely blown out by the revelation.

She is younger than me! Sigma thought with a forced expression. This changed so many things. Like, if they could recruit this young, why bother making homunculi like her? It was this questioning that made her actual military poise fail on all things and slump forward.

"With all due respect, sarge... How old are you?" She said, still not fully aware of the situation.

Daria couldn't keep still apparently. Even if she made an attempt to stay sharp during Elise's briefing, the bombshell blonde could not hold any longer. So, exploiting that Elise was asking for questions before the briefing (her serious business pout was so cute!!) she darted forward.

"Would you look at that! There's more girl pilots like you Elise! Of course they're not as cute as you, but you will have tons of friends to play with when you're not being the Sergeant!" She said, eyeing Serah, Mai and the white-haired Sigma, sparing a furtive glance to another newcomer.

But what followed, would essentially top her crass and bold behaviour. Apparently displaying a blatant disregard for personal space, manners and common sense, she reached for Zim's shaved head with one of her hands, rubbing it vigorously. "Hey look, he's bald! It's a sign of good luck to rub a bald head before the mission! Devors, come and rub this fella's head!" Daria jeered to her fellow companion as she kept a grip on Zim's.

Fortunately, or unfortunately, her interest was short lived, as she noticed the kind of absent stare of Ariin. She let loose of Zim, as she skipped a couple of steps, once again invading the personal space of another pilot as she leveled her face against him, both noses almost touching, and sporting a huge grin.

"Oh, but you're more interesting that good luck charms. Really interesting!" She said, her stare unwavering.

Elise noticed how Zim raised his hand first, but first addressed the late arrival to the briefing.
"Sorry, I'm late ma'am. I was in the infirmary." Katya quickly spoke giving her a salute.

"Apology accepted, Corporal, just make sure to not dawdle from this point on. That was a good move you did, reminds of Kohanim XII when our officer bit the dust and our corporal had to take the reins, followed by me when he also fell. It was a bad day, but we got through." Elise smiled, and moved on to Zim, though Katya did notice the slight change in her eyes just before she turned; there was something fierce and primeval burning in them, as if she enjoyed remembering it.
"Thank you, Ma'am. I am cadet Zim Hero, you mentioned that you were sent as backup, I assume that to mean that you are all pilots, correct? Might I ask what kind of armaments your werks use, or any specialization that you each have? Or to be more specific about the question,
beyond your command and training in what ways are you three supplementing and augmenting our team?"

The short Sergeant reached up on her tiptoes to look at the short man at equal height. "You got that right for the most part, Cadet, though you can drop the snooty attitude right now. Devors and I were assigned here cause we'll be going on field duty soon, while Dari was assigned as Lorenzo's personal assistant," ain't that right, Dari?" She turned towards the taller woman and gave her a little smile, before continuing. "It's going to be an important mission too, from what I hear; even the Colonel's involved. All you need to know about the model of Framewerk I'm piloting is that it's a close-range model with energy-based utility, something I heard you guys were missing out on back in Leviticus but I'll be providing in bulk."

Devors then interrupted her, and Elise puffed her cheeks. "Hey, I was about to tell themmm! I didn't give you permission! Give me twenty!" She angrily pointed her finger at him while stomping her tiny foot in a comical sight. She wasn't angry for long though, and quickly moved on.

"I'd like to request a chance to link with Paladin through hard line once more and return Ariin to full functionality."

Elise simply stared at what used to be Ariin Sorus, simply blinking, before she stopped. "The report did say that..." She listened with an expression of confusion and annoyance at Paladin's request. "Uhh, sure, request granted. Just...don't make a scene."

Still scratching her head, Elise quickly granted the last pilot's permission to speak.
"With all due respect, sarge... How old are you?" She said, still not fully aware of the situation.

Elise smirked; she obviously expected that question to pop up. "That's a secret, teehee!" Then her eyes turned sharp. "But I'll let you know before we get any misunderstandings; I may be young, but I've fought on the front-lines for four years, and have earned these badges fair and square. So I won't be hearing anyone call me disrespectful stuff like child or brat!" She crossed her arms and pouted, trying to make herself look more important, but was left in Dari's twin-shaped shadow as the beautiful woman stepped forward.

"Hey, what're you-" Elise spat out. "This is no time for playing around! Get back here! Hey, what-" Elise's cheeks blushed red when witnessed Dari touching Zim. "EEEHHH, stop that!" She screamed while tugging her jacket as she went to look at Ariin. "This is not proper behavior, Dari! You're not even needed here, so go harass the old man or something!"

"Sheesh," she finally sighed while wiping her forehead in relief once Dari left and she was once again in control of the briefing. "Anyone I catch giggling or even smirking will get twenty!" She put her hands to her hips once again. "Anyway, looks like nobody else has questions, so you're dismissed...except for Cadets Twilight, Armstrong, Reynolds and Sorus-no, 'Paladin'. You will stay."

Once the others left, Elise gave the remaining pilots a harsh scolding. "When a superior greets you with a salute, you show respect by saluting back! And since you jokers didn't, it means you don't care if I'm your commanding officer. So as punishment, give me forty!"

Four days passed by as Elise kept to her promise of being in charge of the pilots' training. But unlike Ritsu, who for the most part kept an outsider's role in the training, Elise had a more hands-down approach, and actively joined in the simulations, either playing against or with the pilots, placing them in random mini-squads. It became clear she wasn't the most experienced officer, sometimes hesitating on an order, or charging in to a heavily defended location when there was an opportunity for a more tactical approach. Still, she kept her heart on her sleeve and gave 100%, fully expecting everyone else to do the same.

Then came the day for the much-rumored mission, and the briefing was held by Captain Ritsu. Despite her promotion and the responsibility it holds, she was still her usual self, strict but reasonable. She yawned, and then slapped herself awake; she seemed to be sleeping less due to the increased amount of work. "Squad Sigma, you're the very best we got against the Cruxi, and we have brought you together for a mission personally ordered by the Colonel himself." She brought out a small object, and revealed it to be a tightly secured holotape. She unlocked the encryption on the holotape, and inserted it into the reading device, which resulted in his figure coming into display on the holo-projector.

The Colonel gave a salute. "Greetings, Squad Sigma. Some of you may not be aware, but Cadet Elora Liu'un, former intelligence specialist of your squad, went MIA during the defense of Leviticus IX. However, her Framewerk was installed with a tracking device, and the signal was confirmed to have originated from a Cruxi base in the Yammu system. We believe that the unit that was capable of teleportation, and the pilot by association, were last located there before the signal was cut off. Your mission is to assault the base, rescue human POWs if any are found, and capture the teleporting Cruxi. The details will be handed out to you by your commanding officers. Good luck out there, pilots, and may your hearts be as mighty as the strongest metal." The Colonel saluted once more, and the transmission shut down.

Ritsu saluted back, and then turned towards the pilot. She put a display of the base into the projector next. "We don't know much about the exact number of Cruxi troops in the base, but our scouting reports indicate that we can expect a fully manned space station. However, while they have plenty of automated defenses around the perimeter, they actually have a small amount of CWM's, estimates say less than sixty. There's been sizable transfers, so expect more experimental units like MIST. You'll be vastly more outnumbered than before, but there's less risk for collateral damage, so you're granted permission to use lethal force while outside the base. It seems the Cruxi didn't expect us to find their hideout, so this is our best chance for a counter-attack, before they smarten up and reinforce their defenses. Now then, questions?"

"Yes, Ma'am," Zim responded when told to cut out the attitude. He didn't intend any offense, he didn't even think that he had implied anything beyond the questions that he asked. Before he could continue the thought process, he was suddenly being talked to by the tall lanky fellow as he interjected to explain his combat role. He seemed to approve of Zim's apparent attitude, that could potentially be troublesome on the battlefield. But then again, he was a tried and true combat veteran, so he knew better than Zim.

Zim was lost in thought on Devor's behavior and what that might result in on the battlefield when suddenly the bombshell was giving him quite the rub down. He blushed. Zim legitimately blushed and anybody who could see his face could see it. His particular stature left Zim eye level with her particular anatomy, and Zim being a red-blooded male had been stranded in a desert of eros amongst these children. Yes, more than ever, Zim realized that his companions were all children. This person standing before him rubbing his bald head was a woman, not a child at all. Being originally from a high gravity planet, Zim's physiology was varied in many ways, in most situations, these were benefits including how his heart could pump blood harder, and faster. However, internal membrane did not enjoy the increased durability and thickness that his epidermis did. The result being that anytime Zim and other people from his home planet of Fortress had the least little bit of sexual arousal, they had a very high chance of a nose bleed. This was exactly one of those times. Stuck at attention for the briefing, Zim had little choice but to let the trickle of blood run from his left nostril. But as suddenly as the buxom angle had granted Zim her favor, intentionally or not, it was gone. As if driving the point of rejection home, or perhaps offended by Zero's nose bleed, she moved on to Paladin and touted about how much more interesting he was.

It wouldn't sink in until later that she was Lorenzo's personal assistant, which meant that despite her aloof behavior, she was a genius. That, and she was probably merciless. These thoughts would haunt Zim's fantasies in the days to come, often involving leather and whips.

The dismissal came, and four days later they reconvened with Captain Ritsu. Several thoughts crossed his mind throughout the briefing; shock and awe were the prominent reactions. Thoughts of revenge and rescue, however, were quickly snuffed by the estimates on the numbers and the probability of new units. There were a great number of questions that came to mind, many of them, Zim assumed would be answered as the strategic portion of the briefing continued. However, Zim raised his hand to indicated his questions.

"Captain Ritsu, I have a few questions if I may list them for you?" Zim said when called on, "Are we going to have any additional support beyond our newest squadmates? It was mentioned that this is a space station, will this be space combat or are we expected to land on the station, infiltrate, and then begin the operation? Will we have any additional equipment or armaments for the approach? Can you make it clear the priority of the objectives and expand on them? For example, if we cannot capture the teleporter, should we destroy?"

Zim hesitated a moment before he said it, "Is it possible... that this is a trap?"

Both Mai and Jake simply followed orders. Though both made the mistake of not saluting their new superior officiers so doing forty push-ups became their punishment. Needless to say, both knew now that the whip was cracked and they had to fall in line more than ever.

Thankfully though, Jake's "contacts" from his recon division didn't get cut off. Probably though because he was requesting information on things that weren't sensitive. Just Cruxi units and their weapons. Updates from the warfront if you would. He did promise Katya during the week before the new arrivals that he would be helping her in terms of general combat information so thankfully, that didn't change.

However, getting any info on the missing pilot Elora became a problem. It seemed THAT was too sensitive without getting demoted or worse.

"...gotta love high command and their infinite wisdom. Always have to keep their secrets", Mai had said when he decided to talk to her about it during those four days.

"Mai. Just stop with that reckless behavior. Look. I know "Seven" is MIA still but you still have to be more responsible with yourself", Jake had said.

"...Jake...it's my life...don't tell me how to live it...", Mai said slowly.

"I can because whatever the Helldiver division taught you, it wasn't cool. Your acting like a fool", Jake had rhymed.

"...maybe your right...but Caulder also did things that were correct...for one, he never "lied" about what the Cruxi are and how far they're willing to go to win...I've done some "dirty work" in that division too...and I've seen what they do to human P.O.W.'s...simply put Jake, just brace yourself when that time comes", Mai had responded before she walked away.

Needless to say, Jake was still having trouble with Mai. But she was right. It was rare but when the Cruxi do decide to capture human beings, it was for, sadly, reasons that you could just use your imagination on.

Jake also figured the rest of the squad already knew in one shape or form or another but outright saying so might get him into trouble. As Mai put it, higher ups may not like that info being spilled.

Then this day came. The mission now would be a rescue mission. Although from the sounds of it, Elora may not even be there anymore...or if she was...it might be...

Jake shook that though when the briefing ended. He needed to ask questions about this. He then pulled out what looked liked a "tablet" of sorts and began running his data program that held random information on general stuff about the war. In this case, he brought up information about the Cruxi and their "known" war units.

Mai listened intently. This wouldn't be the first time she had to hit a Cruxi controlled station. The problem was that they usually tended to hold new but experimental units. THAT was the reason why the Helldivers unit were called in.

Simply put, they had the "dirty" job of hit and run to see if they can lure out those units just to collect combat data before retreating. A sad job, yes, but that data was the reason why pilots lives were saved. It didn't always work but it was something than nothing. The seven of them at the time also came back alive.

Then there was that one time they actually won one battle where they did find POW's on a station before reinforcements showed up...needless to say, Mai saw first hand what the Cruxi were capable of...

Then that day came when they were shut down...

She then listened to Zim ask his questions first then Jake followed up.

"Ma'am. Can you give us estimates as to what kind of enemy units we could possible encounter? I have data right here that I can elaborate on to the rest of the squad so we don't get caught off guard. CWM's are nothing new to us I imagine but the automated defenses can be trouble. Plus, did the scouts spot any "unknown" units at all?", Jake then asked.

Katya

The instant Katya heard her apology was accepted by the Sargent. A sense of relief washed over her. Katya having been a little worried if the new Sargent was going to punish her for being late. However, it seemed this tiny Sargent wasn't all that bad. Merely warning not dawdle from this point on. Katya nodding.
"Yes and thank you, ma'am." Katya quickly stated in reply before the Sargent looked away turning her attention to the others and the questions that were asked. Katya moving stand with rest of te squad for the rest of the briefing. Watching and listening everything that went on. Katya having to suppress a snicker when the Sargent stamped her foot. Finding the sight quite amusing. After all who wouldn't the girl looked like a young child throwing a tantrum. When they meeting was over and she was dismissed. Katya was quick to leave. Disappearing for several hours as found somewhere out of the way to study her Artemis Drones schematics again.

As the for day's passed Katya did what she could help Elise. Supported her in discussions offered suggestions when she could. Katya seeing it her job to help the little Sargent given she was the only one who wasn't a cadet. Katya was willing to do whatever Elise needed to help better command the squad. She always pushed herself, always giving her best. Feeling it was her duty to set an example. Outside of training Elise was the only new face to the Squad Sigma the Katya was willing to speak to. Although it was mostly as Elise outranked Katya and she didn't want to get on the Sargents bad side. That and her small stature made Katya think Elise was cute, which made Katya lower her guard. So was willing to talk.

Krista and Devors however, were not so lucky. Katya refusing to speak with either of them for the first three days unless it was important and necessary. Katya looking she would bite their heads off if they dared bother her. By day for Krista didn't get that look. However, Katya wasn't willing to interact with her. Her free time during the four days Katya spent burying herself in werk schematics and any information Jake gave her.

When the day of the mission arrived. Katya made sure this time she was first to arrive at the briefing. Watching everything in silence. Her hands balling into fists when Elora was mentioned. Those wounds still fresh in Katya's mind. The young woman still blaming herself for Elora's capture whenever she wasn't doing anything. Since Elora's capture Katya was quick to anger when Elora was mentioned around her. When Ritsu asked if there were any questions Katya was about to speak and ask something. However, Zero beat her to the punch asking a total 6 questions which covered what she was about to ask. So decided to keep quite. Zero's last question sending a chill up Katya's spine. The idea this could be a Cruxi trap was unsettling. However, if it meant saving Elora Katya didn't care.

Krista Reynolds

Krista was too caught up trying to attach names to faces to remember to salute. By the time she'd had stopped spacing out it was already too late, and she focused on paying attention to what the girl had to say. There was one line that caught her attention though.

"But I'll let you know before we get any misunderstandings; I may be young, but I've fought on the front-lines for four years, and have earned these badges fair and square. So I won't be hearing anyone call me disrespectful stuff like child or brat!"

Krista gasped when it sunk in. "Just how young was she started fighting? People called me young when I was recruited... Her thoughts were interrupted by trio's sibling-like antics. "Well, they don't look too bad. Pretty chill, it seems." she thought. A small smile crept onto her face as she watched them.

Krista recoiled at the announcement of the punishment. She covered up her mouth to try and hide her smirk but she feared it was too late. Less than a day and she'd already messed up badly.

Elise's eyes darted in Krista's direction like arrows, stinging deeply as she briskly walked over to her. "Did I say something funny, Cadet Reynolds? You think I'm just joking around, huh? Look me in the eye, pilot!" She then ordered, her cheeks puffed up.

Krista forced herself to stand still as she turned head downwards to meet Elise's eyes. "Oh goodness she looks like my cousins when they want candy." She kicked herself even as she let out a small snorting giggle. "No M'am, I'm really sorry M'am," she said with a twang, "you guys just really reminded me of my family there for a moment." She shook as she tried to control herself, taking a deep breath. "That's gonna be sixty pushups, ain't it?" Without further ado, she took a step back and started doing her push-ups.

Elise continued staring angrily, but her puffiness went away, followed by something resembling an annoyed smirk. "I'm glad we have an understanding, Cadet." After the pushups were done, Elise then nodded. "Alright, now remember to keep sharp and keep to protocol so we don't have to do this again. Dismissed."

Krista was the last of the cadets to finish. She stood up as sweat dripped down her face. She struggled to maintain her posture as she gave a shaky-armed salute. "Yes Ma'am. Won't happen again."

The next few days with Squad Sigma was a change of pace for Krista. Each one of the exercises was not just for the sake of testing a new weapon, but to prepare herself for using the weapon in combat. It was clear that she was the newest member of the group, and while her fellow cadets didn't treat her poorly there was a certain distance that couldn't be helped. She still wasn't quite sure what to think of the Sergeant. It was clear from the simulations that Elise was much more experienced than Krista was. She also did a very good job of reminding her of proper military procedure. On the other hand, there were moments where she almost acted as old as she looked.

Krista felt like the mission came all too soon. Even as she walked into the briefing room she was unsure of how well she could fight. Still, she tried to hide her nervousness as she saluted both Captain Ritsu and the Colonel. She paid attention as the briefing was given, and made sure to salute the Colonel back at the end.

She raised her hand an waited patiently to be called on. "Captain, do we have an idea where in the base the prisoners are being held? And ah know Zim already sorta asked this, but are we going to have to go in and free them ourselves, or will there be backup?"

Ritsu answered: "Only the unit assigned the mission are privy to the details of the mission. If word were to spread of a larger military movement, there is a possibility the Cruxi may find out of the operation, and strengthen their defenses before you get there. In other words, we need to strike them before they expect us, and thus can only assign a single Frame-class transport ship for the mission.
In your case, it will be the NOAH."

The captain then drew an arrow from NOAH to the enemy base on the holo-projector. "An infiltration approach is advised, but space combat is highly likely due to the surveillance surrounding installation. Our scouts reported that there may be less-monitored entrances than the main one, but that is pure speculation. It is up to your commanding officer's discretion which approach to take." When she said that, Elise nodded, her expression far too grim to fit for someone looking that young.

"Two assault packs are cleared for use by the unit in the mission, but according to R&D they have not been optimized, and so will considerably slow down Framewerk mobility if equipped. Steinman, choose the pilots who will be equipped with these packs." "Roger!" Elise responded with a salute. Ritsu continued: "Number one priority is rescuing POW's, and your units will be assigned with extraction spheres for the task. I believe you are aware how they work since it was part of your simulation program, but for the sake of consistency I'll recap: They are spheres worn around the Framewerk's waist that place their contents in cryostasis. One will be assigned to every member of the unit."

"Priority number two is capturing any enemy unit you recognize capable of teleportation, in other words, this unit." Ritsu showed a rendering of the elite Cruxi on the holo-projector. "For this we will assign you Nega-collars that have been tested to deactivate basic Cruxi systems. However, there is a possibility the collars may not work on the aforementioned unit, so brute force has to be applied instead. If the unit is perceived to be impossible to be captured without incurring major casualties to the unit, then elimination of the unit can be ordered by your commanding officer."
For Zim's last question, the captain's expression turned grim. "Considering the fact the Cruxi may have detected the signal coming from pilot Liu'un, we cannot deny the possibility of a trap. But this is an opportunity that can't be wasted. If you confirm an ambush has been set for you, your commanding officer can order a retreat. Otherwise, you are cleared to fire on will."

"The automated defenses are confirmed to be batteries of anti-space missile launchers and high-energy variants of Plasma Gatlings you may have seen equipped on the enemy units accompanying the teleporting unit. Scouts have estimated that they ring the station in intervals of 500 meters, so expect to draw fire from at least a dozen if you move as a single group. There were reports of cargo vessels containing unidentified MIST-grade weapons including one with a 'funnel-like' shape. In short, prepare for enemies with resistances to either kinetic or energy weaponry."

She raised her hand an waited patiently to be called on. "Captain, do we have an idea where in the base the prisoners are being held? And I know Zim already sorta asked this, but are we going to have to go in and free them ourselves, or will there be backup?"

"Based on the blueprints of other Cruxi installations, the prisoners should be located at the lower levels of the station. To repeat, only squad Sigma has been assigned for the mission. This will be a difficult mission, but I fully believe that you are capable of completing it. The mission will start in three days, so begin your preparations immediately. Give them all you got! Dismissed."
After the briefing, Elise sighed and rubbed his forehead, and then spoke to squad Sigma. "Alright, report to me if you wish to volunteer for assault pack use. Let's give e'm hell!"

Jason "Phoenix" Diabolus | Squad Sigma Pilot

After being dismissed from the meeting, Jason had gone to a place he had found him spending increasing amounts of time as of late; the framewerk hanger. He found a certain peace among the massive war machines, particularly with Ribasu. Not to mention, assisting in the maintenance of Ribasu provided a certain distraction from recent events. Something that he found much welcome given the current situation. In the time between training, Jason spent a majority of his time observing the others in his squad. Trying to get a feel for how they all interacted with each other. It was certainly a bit different than the relationship between Doom had been, and he'd have to get used to working with a new group all over again. The highlight of the past for days were the times spent in the simulators, as it gave Jason a good idea of what the others were capable of doing. Something he liked to keep in mind, as old habits from his previous position as squad leader definitely died hard.

Either way, the day came when they were to be sent back out to take the fight to the Cruxi. Standing in the back of the room, as he had when they originally met Elise, Jason listened carefully to what they were told. In the back of his mind, a flurry of possible scenarios for the upcoming fight flashed through his mind. Surely the Cruxi would've detected a signal coming from Elora. While he wasn't fond of the aliens, he definitely thought of them as more than competent enough to detect signals from inside their station. He had no doubt that this was going to be a trap, and they would be going headlong into the Cruxi. Not something that he envied so much.

Still, the boy remained silent in the back of the briefing room as others asked their questions, with Zim asking what had just been on Jason's mind. The response to Zim's question seemed a bit... lacking to Jason. But at the same time, he understood the need to recover their squadmate. One thing that did grab his attention, however, was the mention of the assault packs. With only two of them being approved for usage in the upcoming battle, he began thinking about the possible applications of such packs. Utilizing these could certainly prove useful in both grabbing the attention of the enemy, as well as lightening up the resistance. Although he was fairly confident that focus from the Cruxi would be on those employing the assault packs. Bigger threats and all that, it would make sense to try to eliminate the heavy hitters right out of the gates. With a small nod, Jason decided he would volunteer to use one of these packs. With the additional fire incoming, Ribasu's extra armor would likely prove useful in the upcoming fight.

Once the briefing was over, Jason made his way to Elise and gave the girl a quick salute. "Sergeant, Pilot Diabolus. I'd like to volunteer to use one of the assault packs. Ribasu's heavy armor should be able to hold out a bit longer against any additional incoming fire that those employing the packs might experience." He explained, before falling silent as he waited to hear her reply. He hoped she wouldn't take his explanation as an insult to her intelligence, the boy had simply figured that coming forward to volunteer with no reason would seem a bit irresponsible on his part.

This situation was looking pretty bad. It could certainly be a trap, the people that they were trying to save could already be dead. And they were tasked with capturing something that an astral bombardment couldn't destroy. All of that, and they had to do it alone. However, two pilots could be outfitted with more equipment to augment their assault capabilities. Zim immediately liked the thought of that, of course, he was hopeful for something along those lines as he had asked the question. When the briefing was over, Zim approached Elise to volunteer.

"Ma'am," Zim addressed her appropriately for her rank, "I would also like to volunteer for the second assault pack. Being a primarily melee combatant, I will be of limited use on the approach. However, an assault pack would augment my options and give me something to fight with."

When he was done with Elise, Zim would head towards the hangars to run some simulations.

Roger wasn't quite sure what to make of the whole situation. On one hand, it felt good knowing that they might be able to finally put the Cruxi on the defensive for once, they were being given more support than during Troas/Joppa and everything seemed to be on the level. But on the other hand, there was a lot of doubt hidden under the surface: what if this was a trap, or worse what if nothing was really there after all. And then there was the fact that there was such a high degree of confidence placed in Team Sigma. They only had one real mission so far, and that was a victory only secured with heavy casualties sustained by both the planetary defense forces and the Squad itself. Hell, for the Joppa team, it could barely be considered a victory considering how they were treated after the fact.

Whatever the case, the meeting was adjourned and Rooney had no interest in trying to volunteer for an assault pack. He wasn't nearly good or experienced enough to be trusted with such a responsibility, and knowing his track record would probably end up damaging all the bonus equipment anyways. And the only two normal guys in the Squad were volunteering for the assault packs. Great. Well he'd have to go grab some grub by himself then.

Katya & Zim

As questions were answered by Captain Ritsu, Katya became lost in thought. The fact this part of this mission was going to be in space. Dawning on her. Alongside the fact, her drones were not equipped for deployment in space.
"That's going to problematic. Eden's can't repair things if they can't reach it." Katya thought, biting her lower lip. Feeling slightly worried about her usefulness in this operation. From what Katya heard of what the captain was saying this mission was going to be very difficult. So the last thing Katya wanted to do was add to that difficulty by being unable to use half her werks equipment effectively. After all, there was chance Elora was on the station so if there was a chance to bring her home. Katya couldn't make things harder, she owed Elora that much for failing to stop her being taking in the first place.
"Maybe I could add a few thrusters to the drones ..." Katya thought as she heard Ritsu going over the Cruxi station's potential defences and possible defenders.
"By the sound of it, my drones are going to be needed. Will definitely speak to the chief engineer about requisitioning some thrusters. she muttered quietly. Waiting for Ritsu to finish speaking and dismiss everyone. Listening to Elise before quickly leaving the room.

Not wanting to waste any time, Katya headed to the hanger to have a conversation about getting some thrusters. After a somewhat lengthy conversation with the chief engineer. Katya explaining why she needed the thrusters without explaining the operation itself. The willing to give Katya the thrusters. Given it was for an operation, although told her she'd have to install them as his team was busy. Katya agreeing, feeling a little unsure if she could get everything on her own. The Cheif engineer was told Katya he'd get them to her with the hour. Content with the outcome, Katya headed to her werks bay. Making a mental list of everything she needed to do. Hoping 3 days was enough time outfit her drones.

Quickly get changed out of her uniform. Into a set of engineering overalls. She acquired the tools she'd need. Returned to her werks bay and set the first Artemis drone into position in the drone maintenance bay next to her werks. Beginning the process of removing the Artemis drone armour plates.

Zim had reported to Elise to volunteer for an assault pack. It made sense for him to use the assault pack, being a primarily melee combatant, attempting to approach made him nearly useless for a while, as such he wanted the assault pack to be able to provide support on the approach. Once Zim had spoken with the C.O. he went to the hanger to find out what he could about the assault packs and get as much practice in the simulators as possible to get used to the heavier feel. By the time he got there he found Katya hard at work over one of her drones. Armor plates were removed and the inner workings were exposed, carefully, trying not to startle her, Zim approached her, waiting until her hands were free of the machine to speak.

"Katya," Zim started, "What are you working on, something I can help with?"

Being so focused on what she was doing Katya. Didn't even notice Zim approach. Looking little surprised as he spoke to her, asking what her what she doing.
"Outfitting my drones for space. They don't come with inbuilt thrusters. So I'm adding some." She answered gesturing to the drone before picking up the next tool she needed. Looking at Zim for a moment thinking. Before nodding to herself.
"As for helping me? I wouldn't mind the help if you got the time. You know the basics of engineering right? How tighten bolts? Not to rip out the green cables? How not radiate oneself with a mark 7 nuclear reactor? Katya spoke pointing at the Artemis exposed nuclear reactor. An egg-shaped device in the middle of the drone covered in radioactive warning symbols.

"I've had to work around a few machines back in my terraformer days, out on that frontier you usually didn't have the luxury of every tool and a safe clean environment to work in. I'm not known for making it pretty, but I could usually fix something that was broken. So if you'll have me, I'll be happy to help."

A small smear of grease on her forehead caught Zim's eye and called his attention more to her face. There was something there that he hadn't seen before. What was it exactly, besides the grease? Zim pushed it from mind and drew himself in closer to the project. "Tell me what you need, I'll assist to the best of my abilities."

He worked alongside her, but he noticed that his pace was a little slower than normal, was it caution or distraction?

Hearing Zim had at least a basic level of knowledge. Felt okay with letting Zim help her.
"Then your help will be most welcome. Katya said a small smile forming. To have someone help her making her feel a little happy and confident she could complete the task in time. She had to it was simple as that, even it meant a sleepless night or two.
Hearing Zim tell her to direct him, Katya set the tool she was holding down.
" At the moment I merely prepping this drone for the install. Once I get the thrusters from the engineers. I explain it once and show what I've already done" Katya stated, approaching Zim giving him a quick run down of what she was doing. With that, she showed him what she had done and how to do it.
"See it simple. Just be careful break my drone and I'll not be happy. They're special to me. She ended her little explanation with. Before going back to work. Leaving Zim to do the prep work on the left side of the drone while she handled the rest.

It was decided, for Zim at least, that he was distracted. He had never really noticed before, but Katya had a mature cuteness to her. It was hard to define what it was exactly at this point, but Zim appreciated it all the same.

It didn't take long Katya to notice Zim's pace was a little slow. Like he seemed a little distracted about something. However ignored it until nearly all the drones prep work was completed a couple hours later and felt like it was okay for a quick break. Since she was going have a break she wanted to make sure her help and underling was okay. Partly as he was helping her and she was his superior office she felt obligated. Katya stopped working and looked over in last know Zim's direction.
"Zim, it's break time!" She called out. Disappearing into Caretakers cockpit for a moment. Returning with a small blue container, two packs of water. Sitting on the foot werk. She placed everything next to her. Waiting for Zim to join her.

"Thank you," Zim said sitting down nearby on the foot of her Werk. He sat there quietly for a moment, stealing glances periodically. The shape of her work overalls were flattering. Which was a weird thought when you consider that they had seen each other in their skin-thin flight suites, which was all but seeing each other nude. But Zim felt that the plain, dirty brown coverall framed her proportions nicely... he may need to find excuses to come by and help more often, Zim mused to himself.

As Zim sat down Katya quickly wiped her hands so they at least partly clean. Then popped the container open, pulling out a handful reddish brown sticks setting them on a water packed. Pick up the water packet she looked at Zim for a moment before quickly adding another stick. Looking content she got up and approached Zim.
"Here water and a little bit of real meat. Not that "real" stuff they give in the mess hall. But don't tell anyone alright, it's nothing dangerous or anything classed as contraband. I just don't feel like sharing it. I can't get any more of it." she said offering Zim the water packet and sticks.
"So you know that insect meat. Just in case you're weird about eating bugs. It's a little chewy since it's been persevered. If you don't like just put it back in the container." Katya said before walking back over to where she was sat.

Having given Zim something to eat and drink. Katya started in on her own food and drink. Downing the water packet in four large gulps. She neatly folded the now empty packet in half and set it back down.
"So Zim. Is everything okay? I noticed you seem to be a little ... distracted. Is it the upcoming operation? Or is something else bothering you?" Katya questioned taking a meat stick out of the container. Biting down on it the moment she finished speaking.

Zim was just about the stick the meat stick into his mouth and take a bite when she told him that it was from an insect. He paused a moment with his mouth wide open and withdrew the food before he gave a shrug and took a bite of the meat. She was right, it was chewy. Not in the way that he was used to. Zim's home planet of Fortess was almost all mountain terrain, so while mammals were common, they grew up rigid and lean, making the meat very tough. This was more... spongy? But the taste was good. He was still chewing that first bite when she asked if everything was okay.

Caught, his face blushed slightly. "Me? No, I'm fine. I mean, I always get a little nervous before a mission..."

"Idiot..." Zim thought to himself.

"Well, that's not totally true," Zim said with a pause. He realized that he was avoiding looking directly at her. He forced himself to look at his superior officer, which came in fleeting and bashful glances. "Say it." he coerced himself. "Well, the truth is I am a little distracted. I'm not sure if I've just realized it now, or if you've changed something, b-but you are quite pretty."

His face burned. He snapped back from the pause realizing that Katya was still waiting for a response. "I'm fine, just trying to be careful is all. Don't want to break the drones that are meant to be fixing us, or get us irradiated... Th-thank you for the snack, but the one stick will be fine for me. I appreciate the offer, but I don't want to deplete your supply any more than I have." He walked over and returned the second stick while he continued to munch on the first piece.

Hearing Zim was okay, just a little nervous before a mission, Katya nodded. Willing to take the answer at face value. Although something about it made her think he might not be telling her everything. The blush, in particular making her feeling a little suspicious. However, for the moment Katya wasn't willing to press the matter. It might cost her his help. Right now that was something Katya wasn't willing to risk.

The moment Zim said Katya was pretty, Katya choked on the bit of meat she was eating. Forcing it down by quickly drinking half her pack of water. Breathing a sigh of relief as the meat passed.
"Jeez Zim. Don't say things like that." Katya quickly spluttered her cheeks going a little red. Looking away from her helper as she continued to eat.
"Why did he have to say something like that to me. Now that's going to bother me for the rest of the day." she thought frowning slightly. Hearing Zim speak Katya looked at him. laughing when he said he didn't want to break the drones. Frowning when he said one stick was enough for him, although was happy to hear she'd have another stick to devour later.
"I gave you two as I didn't mind giving you two, but hey more for me. As for the drones don't worry about breaking them. They have survived me pulling them apart to study them. They'll survive you." Katya spoke downing the rest of the stick she was eating alongside the rest of her water.

"Right! Back to work soldier. Still so much to do. Katya said standing up. Approaching the drone. Having had a quick break, she good to get back to work.

"Yes Ma'am," Zim responded, snapping to attention before swiftly turning and getting back to work. He smirked as he continued to work, remembering how she had previously chided him for saluting her and calling her Ma'am.

Being called ma'am made Katya shoot Zim a glare. Katya wanting to tell Zim off. however, she didn't have time to tell him off. She wanted this drone prepped for thrusters install by the time someone dropped them off. Katya hoping they'd come soon. She didn't want to wait around. The young woman very pleased when an engineer dropped the thrusters off in couple large crates, not long after the pair got back to work. Katya quick to rummage through the crates organizing the thrusters for each drone into piles scattered around her werks bay. Again showing Zim where she wanted the thrusters. Explain the connection process which Katya read from a data pad she found in one of the creates.

Katya kept Zim working till it was dinner time. Which in that time the first drone was finished and loaded into storage and the second drone brought down to be worked on. This time it was an Eden drone. Katya wanting to work out how to install thrusters on an Eden while she had the help. Then know what to d she could program a special "repair" sequence into an Eden.
When she noticed it that is was dinner time Katya stopped working and approached Zim.
"Your free Zim, so you to go eat and rest, if needed that's was an order. I can handle the rest. You have my thanks. The help was useful it made working out how to do things much easier. I can handle the rest ... I can program an Eden to assist me with the rest. I owe you for this. So here." Katya said undoing the bit of cloth she was using to tie her hair back. Offering it to Zim while her hair flowed freely down across her shoulders and back.

"On my world, we have a tradition where we give a possession to someone we owe. It serves a symbol of our debt which is returned when I no longer owe you. This was something mum gave me when I was a kid. It means a lot to me so take it. Refuse and you'll offend me and end up in my bad books like Roony." Katya stated, hoping Zim would understand.

Zim blushed again. "Damn," He thought to himself as he took the hair tie. "I'm sure you'll have back soon." He tied it around his right wrist like a bracelet before turning to leave.

Inside the frameworks hangar, Jake had decided to wait for "Paladin" by his framework. He wasn't sure if he could do much but as a mechanic, he could provide support.

From what he could understand, "Paladin" was the result of some fault within the framework. Based on reports, taking a grazing shot from MIST's attack was more than enough to do something...mental to the pilot.

Or perhaps...it went beyond that.

Either way, if there was a chance to at least have "Paladin" talk to Ariin inside the framework, then at least he could help provide Ariin with conversation and the like. And perhaps find a way to reverse the effect.

He was just listening to his tunes through his headset when he saw, of all people, Mai Twilight approach. She also was carrying a backpack of sorts on her back.

Taking off his headset he then asked, "So what bring you here Mai?"

"Same reason as you I'd imagine. Say what you want about my recklessness but when it comes to helping others, I will do so", Mai responded.

"Cool beans. Don't be means", Jake said with an attemped rhyme.

Mai just rolled her eyes then asked, "Has he shown up yet?"

"Nope. I imagine if he were going to attempt this, now would be best. I just hope I got plenty of rest."

"Ok seriously. Stop. This is serious", Mai said with a hint of annoyance.

Jake simply nodded then said, "Truth be told, got alot on my mind with this mission. Hope I can help get this done to some extent so I have some peace of mind...by the way, what's with the backpack?"

"...something special...I uh...got in touch with an old contact...I hope it can help", Mai simply said as she gently put the backpack onto the ground.

"...whoa that's shady. But I know better in this case than to ask."

"If "Paladin" shows, I'll explian Jake. Let's see if he comes this way. If not, we'll go looking for him."

Paladin had been up all night, he'd spent hours running models and testing data, searching through reports... Nothing. He couldn't conform his plan to save Ariin or if Ariin even still existed, the most he knew was that hardline links normally killed the pilots and fried Framewerk when they were tested. Yet this had not happened, Paladin knew all of his specs well all of what his systems could access but... Perhaps there was more inside this frame than the others? It was developed on Mars and not under Lorenzo, perhaps there was another reason why this happened.

Rubbing his eyes, he changed into his plug suit and pulled Ariin's jacket on on putting the hood up before slowly stepping out into the hall. The former framewerk walked along until he reached the docks, spotting two of the squad members at the end of the hall. He stopped looking at them curious as to why they were here, his robotic eye moving in an out of focus before resting on the backpack. "You are pilots, Jake and Mai? Are you here to test your frames?" He asked as the tech sent an order out from his robotic eye to the techs, who began to move Paladin to the end of the catwalk opening the cockpit.

"If you are here because of concern for me, there is none. Ariin and I were doomed from the start, much as it pains me to admit it." He said starting to move past, yet yet shorter boy could not move past the two so he sighed and leaned back on the railing. "Ariin is sentenced to fight until death or victory, after which he will put in prison. I will used as a model for cheaper lesser models based off of my combat data and performance review." He stopped a moment. "But the mission dictates victory... I need my pilot, and he needs to control my frame." He spoke like the machine he was, yet pangs of emotion crept into his words.

"...Paladin...like it or not, we still care despite your circumstances", Jake responded.

"Say what you want about my recklessness lately but unlike others, we actually give a damn as to what happens to you", Mai added.

She then squatted onto the ground and opened the backpack she had brought. Jake watched as she then pulled out what looked liked a tablet of sorts but when she started spreading out the equipment attached to it, that's what caught his attention. What looked liked a pair of small speakers and the second was a headset similar to his except there was a mic attached to the right ear-side of said headset.

"...so what's that?", Jake asked.

"It's a piece of experimental tech from my days with the Helldivers division. Basically, it plugs into just about any port of the cockpit of a framework and..."attempts" to hear those supposed creepy voices you may hear if your sync rate is too low. This was just one of a few "official" equipments that we were assigned to the Helldivers back in the day. Though this piece was discontinued since some thought trying to talk or even listen to those voices was just a hoax", Mai responded.

"...and HOW per say did you even get this tech?", Jake asked.

"...like I said, an old contact...actually, said "contact" contacted me...I'm sorry Jake...can't say more..."

"That's fine. As a recon expert, I understand the whole "secret agent" thing", Jake said with a nod.

Nodding, Mai then looked at Paladin.

"Paladin...I'm sure someone had told you about my other persona "Seven"...so I kind of know what your going through but before we start taking any risks, let's try this safer approach first. If Ariin is in there, then let's see if we can talk to him first. Of course, your going to have to sync up "normally" first to make it easier to check frequencies. Just don't move the framework around or "Hardline" if that was what your plan was."

"...baby steps first Paladin. I know it sounds like too much "theory" work but it sounds safer. I remember hearing something about this tech as well. So let's give this a try first", Jake adds in.

Serah's week was, for the most part, uneventful. She'd become almost numb to the daily routine of training, even with a new Sergeant in town, and her free time didn't amount to much either. Jason was too busy working on Ribasu to pay her any mind, Zim and Roger were always in training simulators, Sigma had started to ignore her... it almost felt as if she was being left out. She knew full well that it wasn't that way, but it still stung that everyone was too busy to hang out with her.

In the mission briefing Serah only half-paid attention. It wasn't because she was being apathetic at rescuing Elora- she wanted to see the girl back just as much as everyone else. No, the reason Serah was so distracted was because she couldn't help but look at everyone's faces now and again, seeing an almost completely shared gloom in their eyes. It's like nobody had any faith in themselves- in the squad. Almost as if they were predestined to fail. The girl didn't like that. It hurt to see everyone being so doubtful- even if there's good reason for it. Serah herself had full confidence in everyone's abilities, it's not like they haven't surmounted impossible odds before.

She snapped back to reality once the mission briefing was over, leaving the pilots with a little time to amuse themselves before launching it proper. Serah's eyes trailed back to two particular males in the room, who'd just stepped forward to volunteer for extra weaponry.

"Mou..."

With a small whine, the girl slipped out of the room. She felt extremely disappointed, though it was for petty reasons. The guy she wanted to spend a bit more time with had spent all his time with his machine of war. What she felt bordered dangerously close on jealousy towards said machine, jealousy of all of that boy's attention being spent on it and not everyone else... or even her.

"Not that you deserve to spend time with them."

The thoughts in Serah's head took a dark turn and the girl did her best to quickly shake them off. The moment she did, though, she spotted Jason and Zim walking out of the briefing room together. They passed by her without so much as sparing a glance, both of them too lost in thought to pay her any mind. Serah stayed quiet. She didn't want to disturb either of them, even if she did want to talk to them. They probably had other things to worry about. Things more important than her.

Serah bit her lip. She could tail the both of them, though she had a feeling she knew where they'd go anyway. They'd go to the hangar, like always, and she didn't want to go there. Not for the moment, anyway. She'd just laze around for a bit, maybe even go to the lounge. Maybe there someone would spend some time with her. It'd be nice, at the very least.

Mai & Ariin

Paladin nodded, as he looked at the tech. "I was going attempt hardline contact then use force codes to attempt to swap Ariin and my mind back into correct positions." He looked to the device. "Though it would be better to know first if my pilot is alive or dead, as it would help manage risk." He moved closer to the frame running a hand over it.

"It's strange to touch it... I felt so much more natural inside yet in this body, it took days to master basic motion control. It is a wonder that Ariin can fight and manuever as he does like this." He paused and looked at the two others. "I assume you both wish to have begin right away?" He spoke as he climbed into the frame and began the boot up going slow checking every system twice.

Nodding, both Mai and Jake followed "Paladin" into the cockpit. There, both carefully manuvered inside as to not disrupt the process of doing the normal sync up procedures.

While inside, both Mai and Jake did their parts when told to by "Paladin". Mai then plugged in the tech at a recommended port by it's pilot. There, she then placed the speakers nearby while starting up the tablet.

"...Mai...I know this is a bad time but...was..."Seven" born in a similar manner?", Jake then asked as he assisted checking equipment.

"...well...if you must know...it...wasn't by being grazed by a Cruxi superweapon...Seven was born through basic combat stress...", Mai replied as she started up the program on the tablet.

Jake just stopped asking questions there as he continued his work but Mai continued.

"...at the time..."certain" high up members within command were desperate for quality pilots in which they looked for those born from greatness. In this case, my "Ace" of a mother...after she was...gone...they turned to me and Caulder felt I'd fit in with the Helldivers..."

"...I know war is hell...but jesus...", Jake said, using his imagination to fill in the rest of the blanks.

"I imagine you can use YOUR imagination after that...trial by fires...then one battle...scared out of my mind..."Seven" was born...soon, I just let her do all the work while I quietly slept within my part of my own mind...the only difference was that instead of switching places like Ariin and Paladin..."

"...you got a split-personality disorder", Jake finished.

"...I think because of your presence and perhaps even before that on Joppa, most of the pilots in squad Sigma have figured that out...Zim especially and perhaps Serah...but it was also that unique case that led to this tech...one of the other "numbers" developed it to help me and perhaps others with unique cases of sync faults to help cope but again, some thought it was a hoax...or perhaps unnecessary..."

Mai then started up the program.

"...ok I'm in...and don't mind the creepy voices you may hear. All the time though, they're just random noises...heck, none of it sounds like words...but I'm hoping the one were looking for actually speaks."

Putting on her headset, Mai then looked at "Paladin".

"Ok...going to poke around frequencies in this framework. Ready?"

Paladin nodded. "Of course... I thank you Mai, I know you were not close to Ariin but he thinks a lot of the others. He might not be the strongest or the best pilot, but Ariin is loyal to his team, to you all. I know for a fact he would have stormed back here demanded we give chase." He listened for any meaningful words or noise's but nothing, so he continued to speak.

"He thinks of Elora and Sigma like his little sisters. While this might surprise you, he thinks of the unit as a family. Sisters and brothers protecting each other for there own important reasons. I used to think his logic flawed as that would mean protecting other over the mission... Yet now, I see he was right. Survivial is victory." He said then stopped, as he heard clapping over the frequency.

"Hey the tin can gets it! Now can someone get me out of here... Seriously I'm getting really tired of having to watch my memories. It's like a dime store novel crap without some cheesy narrator. Also tin can... Glad to hear you agree with me." Spoke Ariin though slightly garbled through static. "Also Mai, whose your friend? I don't have eyes really... Wait let me guess! Your brother? Boyfriend?" One could almost feel his smile through the radio. "But anyway, how long have I been in here? Feels like years."

Paladin sighed. "I had hoped your extended stay in there would dampen your up beat attitude it can be exhausting for all involved." He grumbled as he looked at Mai. "Though I am glad you are alive."

Mai just gave a smile at Ariin's response. Even with the static, he was coming in loud and clear. Jake though had a slight look of surprise on him.

"...I won't lie. I felt like I just ate pie", Jake rhymed.

"Seriously?", Mai responded with a look.

"Well after finding him nearly right off the bat with nothing but theories and guesswork, I just became more of a believer of this stuff. I do I do I do."

Mai just slowly shook her head but with a smile on her face. Speaking into the mic on her headset, she said, "No Ariin. He's none of the above. He's a...fellow wingmen back in the day when I did a brief run with the Recon division. Full name is Jake Armstrong."

"Word up Ariin", Jake called.

"Damn it don't talk about food... I miss food. Anyway, I assume your planning on getting me out, well I might be able to help I think I can get out the same way I came in... Well if this is even works in reverse." Ariin sighed thinking for a second. "So question, did my body get super powers from the radiation?"

Paladin groaned and spoke into the mic. "Now Ariin your body did not gain super powers from radiation that's not possible."

Ariin chuckled at his own joke and then finally asked his real question. "So what happened after Paladin and I went all psycho and tried to fight the massive super weapon?"

Both Mai and Jake look at each other before Mai turned back to her mic on the headset.

"...despite collateral damage and casualties...we won...but...during the battle, Elora unlocked some special abilities that made her a force to be reckoned with...that's when a...Cruxi Ace with special abilities of it's own showed up...and took her..."

There was a bit of silence before Mai looked down. Trying to control herself since "Seven" wasn't mentally there at the moment to do so for her.

"...we lost...a few pilots from Squad Sigma in the process...I was in a coma...", Mai began but couldn't continue. Heck, she didn't even want to name the ones lost.

Normally, Jake would have since intel like that was his specialty but even he thought better of it. Even more so since Jake knew full well that without "Seven", Mai was mentally unbalanced when it came to talking about the horrors of this war...and perhaps other issues.

"Damn... That's not good..." Ariin spoke from the other end. "I assume were going after Elora then? Look Mai... I know it's hell out there trust me I saw some shit growing up in the mega cities on Mars but we are gonna get through this. Hell I'm quite literally my brain getting digitized! I made a promise to myself I was gonna keep my squad safe, your on that team Mai."

Paladin nodded as well. "I can confirm Ariin is telling the truth."

"No matter what happens, we count on each other and stick together we can do this. We will get Elora back. We will beat the Cruxi. Then I get to go sit a prison cell until... Huh maybe things go better for me if we don't end the war." Joke the thief as sighed. "I remember hearing 'Seven' on the comm's Mai don't let her rule your head. Your the one I want piloting, not your brain mate... Cause your my friend." He said trying to cheerful and up beat as one could be while trapped inside a digital program that could be eroding memories.

"...and like it or not Ariin..."Seven" is apart of me...and the whole reason why I'm still going till this point...I don't know when she'll return since that coma really knocked a few screws loose in my head...but I have a feeling she'll at least agree with you believe it or not...she's just there to...make those tough decisions when the time and situation comes for it...", Mai responded.

"...for better or worse huh?...well...roll with the punches as they say", Jake then said.

"...Ariin...much like what your going through with Paladin, Seven...also had some diffiulties at first but even she adjusted...what were planning to do here though...is more risky though", Mai then said.

"Ariin. It's Jake. Long story short, were going to attempt a Hardline. We just wanted to get a "lock" of sorts with Mai's tech here so...well in theory, if we got your frequency and know where you are in this framework then the success rate goes up...course, it's just theory. But as I said, were having a chat with you here so...here's hoping."

"Alright then... Beam me out Scotti!" He said, hiding the terror with a cheerful joke. "And if I don't make... I will haunt your frames!" He added, teasingly, trusting they would get him through this.

Mai then looked at Jake who nodded to her. She then looked at Paladin.

"Alright then. Paladin. We got Ariin on this frequency...now I just hope this works..."

"Wait. If we try this with your tech plugged in, could it be possible that Ariin could wind up in that tablet?", Jake suddenly asks.

"There's a failsafe on this thing to prevent that. Again, don't ask...my "contact" seemed to know what was going on somehow and made sure that we were ready for such an attempt. Said contact did say that I could unplug it before the Hardline attempt but that'll mean that, in this case, "Paladin" would have to mentally stay on Ariin's frequency...which is not as easy as it may sound."

Mai then added, "But by the end of the day, it comes down to this...whatever we do, we have to decide now..."

Paladin reached over carefully taking the plug and inserting into slot just above the robotic eye, with a deep breath he gave the order. "Full sync online." With that, all hell broke loose. Paladin, gave a scream then began to convulse the cable held however as the began to change, more emotion as the scream turned to laughter. The Frame itself shook as if being driven before it all stopped and body of Ariin slumped over, breathing faintly.

It took about five minutes but slowly the electronic eye came into focus as opened his real one. "Hey... Ow... I feel as bad bad when got a knife stuck in my brain." Ariin spoke then turned his head quickly. "Huh... But..." His eyes went wide and groaned again. "Oww... I might need a check up... I can swear I still hear the Tin can talking at me."

"..."

Mai just seemed to stare at Ariin during those five minutes while Jake was checking over the framework systems to make sure everything was back online. One things for sure though. Jake saw Mai real freak out briefly or Ariin's convolsions before he saw something himself.

The way Mai's eyes suddenly rolled...as if she had a brief siezure or something...but Jake had seen that symptom before. It was only once back in the day when Mai was working with the Recon division.

And how she began checking over Ariin's body after he had regained conscience...that dead serious look.

And her "drone" voice.

"Mission Accomplished. Ariin is back in his body but comments from cadet Ariin suggest he may have a similar problem to...myself."

She then slowly turned her head to Jake.

"...uh...heh...hi Seven", Jake said with a smile.

"...Jake...I require assistance. Ariin does need medical attention. I also must put away the tech that helped with the mission success. Lorenzo or Ritsu or perhaps others maybe...displeased that I brought such equipment into the base without authorization", Seven droned.

"Wha-? You mean you didn't have it...nevermind. I'll put it in the backpack. Let's just get Ariin to medical."

Nodding, "Seven" then helped Ariin to his feet while Jake quickly put Mai's tech toy back in it's backpack. Slinging it on his back, Jake then assisted "Seven" with escorting Ariin to the medical bay.

"Hey Seven..." Ariin stood up slowly leaning on the two as he tried to focus. "Ugh... I swear being a cyborg is not all it's cracked up to be... Granted holo-graphic projector and the ability see through clothing is a plus an... Oww. Right shutting up... Paladin hates it when I make up crap." He groaned again letting them take him to medical.
