No doubting it's a good film. It's just not good by Tarantino's standards. The characters were interesting but it completely wasted the well built tension. Its attempts to be provocative also felt aimless, perhaps even pandering.

It's a worse version of the Clue movie and stops being good shortly after the intermission. I'd say it's Tarantino's worst but even his worst is at least worth a watch.

I still have yet to see it, but Reservoir Dogs will always be my Tarantino favorite. I wouldn't say he's a hack director, just a man with a vision that only certain audiences can gravitate towards. Like Rob Zombie he seems to favor the old school grindhouse vibe, which I can dig like a shallow grave, but there are others who just aren't into that.

I'll say one positive thing and then leave you be.

The writing and characters were extremely believable. Its main strength is that its dialogue and story felt real, or at least real for its own quirky universe. It was never abruptly interrupted by standard movie story cues. It threw out the formula.

It felt more like I was peering into a different reality than watching a movie.

That was also it's weakness. Most people want the "movie" ending. Most people want it to be more clean cut.

@Rusalka No one says Tarantino is a hack director unless they don't know what the words hack director mean. The man is eccentric and prefers the older style of filmmaking (guy shot Hateful Eight on 70mm and did it up like a roadshow which isn't a thing anymore because that's not how studios make money) but he's not a hack. It's just that the strength of his movies is in the dialog and sometimes that can make his movies feel really self indulgent. He makes exactly the movie he wants to make. Brett Ratner and McG are hack directors. Tarantino is just a movie nerd that gets to make movies like he loved when he was just an unknown movie nerd.

I went to go see it with my mom, she really likes Tarantino movies. One of the things she said to me as we left was, "God, everyone on that movie had to have had fun making that" referring to how over the top it was.

I want to believe there's a blooper reel somewhere of everyone failing to not laugh at the blood vomiting scene.

It was good in the sense it was fun to watch, but I doubt think it will be remembered in the way Tarantino movies usually are.
