Character Creation Help and References
Adult animal people should be no less than 2 ft tall and no more than 10 ft tall. Small animals have generally grown in size, very large animals have shrunk, and medium animals are trending toward average human height. Character height and weight are highly appropriate and I won't be too picky. Animals under 4 ft or taller than 8 ft often require special accommodations.

Most animals should be bipedal with a human-like torso. Hands should have opposable thumbs, but may fewer or more than five fingers, may have claws, hooves, pads, webbing, or other features. Avian, reptilian, and amphibian females tend to have little to no breasts, but this is not a requirement. Heads should be animal in appearance unless they have human ancestry. Feet vary widely in appearance but have generally been becoming more human-like.
Many birds have lost the ability to truly fly but many can glide or hover. This is because their wings are devolving to become arms and hands, claws, or talons (rather than growing additional entirely new limbs). Please be reasonable when deciding your character's flight capacity.
Examples of a flight-capable individual. Hands/talons may or may not be visible due to unclipped feathers. Unclipped wings may restrict the type of clothing an avian can wear or the activities they may participate in.
Examples of individuals who may be able to glide, but not fly, due to heavy weight and/or wing clipping. Clipping allows the individual to wear more restrictive clothing and to participate in activities such as driving.
Examples of individuals who cannot fly or glide. They may be too heavy or may have clipped or underdeveloped wings. They are capable of wearing tight clothing and may participate in activities that require fine motor control, like art, writing, and running dangerous machinery.
Like birds, bats are losing their ability to fly. Their wings are devolving to become more hand-like. The wing membrane and fingers are shortening and becoming more apparent. Some lineages may be more or less devolved.
Many snake lineages have evolved arms and legs. Some have only evolved arms. Sometimes their arms or legs appear underdeveloped.
Animals such as frogs, crabs, seals, dolphins, and small whales have become somewhat more anthropomorphic in appearance, but often less so than land animals. Some lineages are more human-like than others. (So for example, there are some sharks that have arms and legs and others that only have arms.)
Just like humans, animal people can be born with birth defects or may have diseases that cause mutations. Mutations such as albino and melanistic variants are fairly common. Other examples include conjoined twins and individuals with extra or missing limbs.
Animals are expected to cover their private parts (usually crotch and buttox). Females are expected to cover their breasts if they have any. Fashion is highly variable due to the many kinds and sizes of animals. Many different sizes and cuts of clothing are available in-store, but often lack in quality compared to custom-tailored clothing. Tailor-made clothing is more common in this world, but is still considered a privilege for the wealthy.
Fur and skin colors should be their natural colors unless cosmetically modified through dyeing. Due to the costs of maintaining artificial color, most animals don't dye or only dye some parts of their body. Dyeing is used as an expression of individuality. Permanent tattoos are available for animals with skin or scales. Furred animals either have to shave if they want a permanent tattoo, or they can get temporary fur tattoos (fur will shed with time and the tattoo will disappear). Plastic surgery is also available but is very expensive. Many people use surgery to look like different species or to look more or less like a predator. The most common cosmetic surgery is breast implants.
Crossbreeding is possible between almost all intelligent animal species. However, the success rate lowers the more different the species are and may result in unusual appearance, strange mutations, or sterile offspring. Marrying and breeding with different species is generally frowned upon, especially when it comes to rare or endangered species (who are encouraged to keep the bloodline pure.)
Many animals still have heat cycles, while others are fertile all year long. Some animals still follow specific mating/courtship rituals. Mammals give live birth and breast-feed young. Most other kinds of animals still lay eggs and do not produce milk, unless they have significant mammalian ancestry. Egg laying and small animals tend to have small (2-6) litters rather than single children like humans do.
Smaller animals and animals that produce large litters tend to have slightly shorter lifespans and age more quickly. Advancements in modern medicine have allowed even the smallest and most prolific animals to live for at least 50 years.
Reasearch and history has proved that humans are the most intelligent species, but they are not without competition. Other great apes, elephants, horses, dogs, and cats are not far behind. Mammals are generally the most intelligent class of animals followed by avians, then reptiles and amphibians. Insects, arachnids, mollusks, crustaceans, and fish are considered non-intelligent animals. Cephalopods are believed to be very intelligent but are not well studied.
Animals speak many different human languages from around the world but English is most commonly spoken. Some animals may still communicate within their primitive languages (dogs barking or squirrels chattering for example). Many animals have accents or lisps, such as hissing.
Predators and larger animals tend to work in occupations that are labor-intensive (police and military force, firefighting, construction, loggers, movers). Smaller species usually work in professions that involve dexterity and precision work (manufacturing, plumbing, electrical). Omnivores often work in the food and hospitality industry. It is possible for any animal to be hired for just about any job, but they may face opposition.
At this point in time, no animals are truly cold-blooded, but there was a time when many were. Animals with cold-blooded ancestors tend to have low blood temperatures and are more susceptible to the cold, and often suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder. They often wear special heated clothing in the winter and tend to enjoy sunbathing and tanning salons.
Most animals follow human-like sleep patterns. Animals with nocturnal ancestors tend to stay up late and sleep in (ie "night owl"). Some truly nocturnal species and lineages exist, however.
There are many types of religion, including typical human religions. You can make up religions as desired.
Just like humans, animals judge others around them and may have prejudice and stereotypes and irrational fears of others. For example, herbivores are often seen as weak and cute, carnivores are seen as strong and dangerous, foxes are sly, rabbits are promiscuous, black animals are evil, white animals are pure, but many stereotypes are wrong. Classism and sexism are fairly common, and wars are still raged over religion.
Many animals still have their natural instincts and common behaviors. For example, dogs wag their tail when happy, cats lick themselves to groom, and possums play dead when frightened. Most instincts are harmless. Many carnivore and predator species still have the lust for blood or meat. Some go to the Black Market to purchase illegal animal products for consumption. Many turn to prescribed medication to suppress their desires. Usually, if a carnivore eats enough protein from fish, eggs, insects, or plants, they should have no trouble controlling their desires. Carnivores who have tasted blood (other than their own) or those suffering from starvation, malnutrition, abuse, or mental illness are more likely to feel bloodlust or the urge to hunt as well as act on their desires. Statistically, reptiles are most likely to commit crimes, especially murder and devourings, followed by avians, amphibians, then mammals. This is believed to be because of their lower intelligence and less developed brains.
Many animals are considered naturally armed and dangerous. Police and military forces are trained to recognize and neutralize different types of natural attack and defense mechanisms. Animals who are naturally armed are encouraged to be especially compliant with the law to avoid misunderstandings.
Name: Zaina 'Zee' Allaires Gender: Female Sexuality: Bi Age: 27 Species: Spotted Hyena, possible hybrid though she has never bothered to check (bear more then likely)
Diet: Carnivore Height: 7'2'' Weight: 300 lbs of muscle Physique: Muscular, quite tall for a Spotted Hyena Appearance:
Personality: To most a rowdy troublemaker who is abrasive and rather impatient. Though for those that manage to get past her intimidating form and abrasiveness, she's a rather passionate person and protective of her friends no matter how much she may act like she doesn't care for them.
History: Zaina grew up in the foster system being bounced from place to place, never residing with one family for longer then a few months, only once managing to stick with a family for a year before being shipped to another place. The first chance she got, she made the choice to be on her own. Most would look for answers on why they were given up and find their biological family. After everything Zaina had to deal with from the system, she has no real desire to find her biological parents, viewing them being no better then all the families that failed her. Leaving the foster system Zaina coasted, managing to couch surf on a few friends she had managed to gain though she never stayed long. Most nights she spent in the gutters. Getting a job as a bouncer was mostly down to luck as she got into a fight outside its doors and made a favorable impression of the owner, Bartholomew. Of course the owner didn't much care to have a street bum being their bouncer so they made a deal with her. She had to go back to school and in turn she gets to live in one of the small apartments that were above the club and a bit of pay for working the front door and occasionally helping in matters that are less privy to public eye. She begrudgingly accepted, and since been working for the owner for the past few years and he's the closest to family she has though she still maintains him at arms length, waiting for the day when they change their mind and throw her out like everyone else has. By Spotted Hyena standards she's big and she knows it. Her size keeps most at the club from starting trouble. So when trouble won't find her, she finds it and enjoys her intimidating size to knock a few skulls together on occasion.
Class: Lower Class, Bottom of the Barrel Occupation: Student[3rd year (a bit of a late starter), Business Minor], Bouncer at a club at night Relationships: Natasha - A short cheetah that Zaina occasionally is around. (See image in appearance) Alya - An average size Painted Dog that similiarly to Natasha Zaina hangs around with. (see image in apperance) Bartholomew 'Tholo' Whitlock - Owner of the Club she works at. A gruff old wolf who doesn't take much shit from anyone. Deep down has a kind heart. Occasionally has to deal with the darker underbelly of the city.
Apartment above The Wolf Pack A blaring alarm pierced the silence of a room barely lit but the rays of light that filtered through window shades. Zaina groaned beneath her sheets, letting out an irritable huff before slamming a large fist against the perpetrator of disturbing her slumber. Amazingly the alarm clock hadn't shattered under her strike as it ceased its ear piercing sound. Zaina briefly contemplated on just remaining in bed but sighed knowing that wasn't an option. She sat up and stretched, a yawn escaping her lips before getting up to start the day anew, starting with a shower. She groaned slightly from bruises she had gained the previous night from a trip down the back alley district. She had her reputation to uphold in a few fights that got her some extra cash as well as some free drinks. Not close to being any good then the place she worked but it was something, plus a flirt or two if she found a particular fancy. Her more recent interest was a newer fighter at least to her that was a vulture of some form.
Any thought of returning to peaceful slumber was lost when cold water hit against her fur, jolting awake the large hyena. She quickly got out of it as she could, getting dressed and grabbing a backpack haphazardly tossed to the side of the cluttered room, it's contents having been haphazardly shoved into it before being tossed over her shoulder while leaving the confines of her apartment and making her way down the hall and down the stairwell that led down to her place of work, a moderately well known club called The Wolf Pack.
As she made her way down she was greeted by the sight of the owner of the The Wolf Pack she resided above. Bartholomew Whitlock, the closest thing she could call to someone being family after three years. Bartholomew, Tholo for short, was a gruff looking timber wolf. He stood around six feet, a slightly large frame with his fit build. While one eye was a piercing sky blue the other was dull and foggy, a scar tracing itself across the left side of his face. How the wolf had been blinded he never said keeping it to himself. His fur a mixtures of grey except for his underside which was cream colored. His muzzle has slight signs of white to appear. Still even for his age, he was a tough son of a bitch and the only person who managed to knock her out. The incident had been her own fault and taught her to not do it again unless she wanted to permanently be back on the streets.
"Finally dragged your ass out of bed I see kid," Tholo stated while looking over the bar and checking everything was in order ",Thought I'd have to do it myself. Have one of the rookies in the back video tape it."
"Har har old man," Zaina huffed flipping him off, Tholo simply shook his head while continuing to work. Zaina entered behind the bar, finding an old coffee machine that had all ready been brewed and quickly made herself a cup of the wonderful elixir. One thing she could at least give the old wolf credit for, he did make good coffee.
"Off to hell I go," she muttered while carrying her drink of coffee giving the old wolf a final wave. Tholo gave a grunt in response wiping down the counter as she exiting the front door to walk her way to the nearest subway to then reach the Eukary University. Today the university was full on open to the public, with various clubs and other stalls to entice new students or curious bystanders. Zaina slightly unhappy with crowds this early in the morning but would deal with it. Plus she did see an arm wrestling tournament.
