[:. The Catalyst .:]

Admiral Wesley Corden stood stationary gazing ruminatively through the window of one of the many satellite stations that orbit Gsebria into the inky void of space. He enjoyed still moments such as this as it gave him leave to clear his mind and merely exist in the vastness of the universe for a moment.

"Admiral...our sensors have detected an unidentified vessel heading directly toward the planet from SC_67.54.88...8500 kilometers out," said one of the the console operators.

Corden frowned slightly as duty called.

"Hail them."

"Yes, sir...initiating transmission..."

The admiral moved toward the console as the operator did his work.

"Link established...you're live, sir."

[:. One month earlier... .:]

The RP will actually begin one month before the event above so that the characters can develop a little before the invasion. The info below is mostly to get a feel for how the world works. (It's a lot…sorry) Hit me up with any questions.

The most important sections are Population, Social Classes, TISSA and ICON, all the Organizations, and Noetic Abilities... everything else is just background to help shape your perception of the world.

Gsebria

Gsebria is a planet that is slightly larger than Earth and has geographical and climatic characteristics similar to Earth. It also tilts at about the same angle, which allows for the same seasonal pattern. Gsebria has three moons that orbit: Auron is the closest moon and shines golden yellow; Azura is the middle moon and shines blue-green; Rubia is the furthest moon and shines dark red.

The Allied Global Union

The Allied Global Union (A.G.U. or The Union) is an alliance comprised of 45 nations spread over five subregions. The A.G.U. was formed to promote transnational peace, security, and cooperation under the Pax Concordat. The Pax Concordat established the Central Assembly - the main deliberative body - and the First Tribunal - the court for transnational matters. It also contains regulations for resources and energy, transnational travel, and the use of TISSA, ICON, and teleshifts. Each nation within the Union has a similarly-structured government.

Technology

Organizations

Noetic Abilities

A Noetic’s mental abilities may be inherent from birth, but they don't truly manifest until adolescence – it's at this point that the eyes change to violet. Most commonly, noetic abilities will develop slowly and come in ‘flashes’ until they fully integrate into the person's psyche. There are rare occasions where a traumatic occurrence will fully trigger a Noetic's abilities in a single instance. Abilities, once manifested, do not progress on their own, however – they must be cultivated and trained the same way an athlete trains his or her body. Also, like an athlete trains differently for certain sports, a Noetic strengthens and refines specific aspects of their powers. Attempting to practice too many skills can make one's abilities inadequate because of the lack of focus in one area; it takes an extremely strong and sound mind to be able to be proficient in several areas. Trying to use too much power can overload the psyche causing fatigue, blackouts, and, in extreme cases, even permanent mental damage. If a Noetic happens to possess a neurological disorder, such as epilepsy, neuralgia, or dementia, it can have adverse effects on his or her abilities (i.e. sudden flare or failure of abilities, difficulty with control).

Character Sheet (see notes below on how to fill out starred items)

@CloseEnough I got a CS written up... I'll post it soon as I finalize it

(Edit):
Added CS to the first post and also added another section about time and seasons
(bump)

Added a section to help describe some of the overall geography to help get a feel for the world.

The thieves hacked and gasped as gas filled the area, their retaliation on the SWAT officers immediately ceasing. As the SWAT team advanced, a fellow policeman was hurled their way through the haze after a few gunshots, colliding with a few of the officers. Confused and frustrated, the fallen crew scrambled to their feet, shouting a few more choice expletives as they did so. Teetering on the edge of professional execution and enraged brutality, the SWAT officers then moved in, forcing every offender to the ground and quickly handcuffing them. With the main criminals apprehended, the officers commenced a brief scan of the area as the gas cleared. Perhaps they had hoped to catch a couple of the Variants as well, but even though the cavernous hole still remained in the wall, there was no sign of any others.

“All clear!” shouted one of the SWAT agents in a mix of annoyance, relief, and assurance. “Let’s get these bastards out of here!”

The dust finally began to settle from the truly chaotic event, leaving everyone involved and onlookers alike extremely uneasy. The thieves were escorted into police vans as officers doubled back to recheck the scene. Hostages were checked for medical issues and interviewed, news reporters continued to keep their viewers up-to-date, and the crowds were steadily held back behind police lines. Within said crowd, Dante’s clone still lingered taking in the sights from street level, while Dante himself remained still on the rooftops. Wanting to get a peek at the back of the building where the loud crash was heard moments before the gunshots, his clone found a weak spot in the police surveillance and was able to sneak into an alley leading toward the rear of the bank. Silently creeping down the increasingly darkening path, he stopped and hid when he saw a small group of people who seemed to be escaping from the scene. They didn’t seem to be involved in the robbery, but something compelled him to hang back and eavesdrop on their transaction.

Knowing what his clone was up to, Dante decided to call it a day and leave the roof, letting the clone gather some recon. He turned to find Ezio, his black and gray short-haired cat with piercing green eyes, on the hunt for what was probably a mouse. Seemingly bored with the chase, Ezio casually ceased and followed Dante as he walked through the door that led to the stairs. Dante aimlessly descended to street level, unsure of where he would head, but confident that his wandering might take him somewhere interesting at least.

When the reports came in of the incident coming to a close, Manny shook his head and sighed.

“Well, that was definitely something…”

“People in this town are getting crazier by the day,” Ellis said, wheeling into the kitchen to refill his drink.

Manny got up from the couch and stretched. “...and it is into that crazy town that I must venture, dear brother,” he declared with a smirk. “I got a gig to head to.” After quickly changing his shirt, he grabbed his guitar and headed out the door. “I’ll catch you later, bro.”

“Be careful out there, mop top!” Ellis shouted as Manny closed the door. Manny rolled his eyes and considered opening the door back up just to give El the finger, but thought it would be too predictable. Instead he continued on out of the building into the evening. He lived just on the edge of The Shanty in more or less the ‘buffer area’ between it and Ville Rogue - not quite the poorest of neighborhoods but far from the most pleasant. It was what he could afford as a typical ‘starving artist’ as he refused to take financial help from his mother who insisted he lived closer to Midtown, where she herself had a fairly cozy apartment. He wanted to make it on his own, but he at least granted his mother’s plea to live with Ellis so they could ‘watch out for each other’ (like they were teenagers or something). Any deeper into The Shanty, though, and Manny may have reconsidered taking his mom’s offer and staying on the other side of town, but thankfully things were fine this close to Ville Rogue.

As Manny took his stroll toward the heart of Ville Rogue, the district’s vibrant nightlife started to slowly come alive. Street musicians lined the walkways, heavenly smells wafted from every restaurant and cafe, lights danced off of the timeless architecture. The true heartbeat of New Haven sounded in Manny’s ears and he could hardly contain his smile, in spite of the unsettling event he had just witnessed moments earlier. He loved the culture in Ville Rogue, especially the music scene. It took all he had in him to not stop and jam with one of the musicians serenading the streets...but he had a previous (paying) engagement, of course, and could not be late.

The scene grew continually more frantic as people began to appear from every angle to interfere with the heist. The thief with the fireworks had somehow managed to blow the tires off of the truck, as the Variant known as Tank barreled in through a side wall.

“What the actual fuck is going on?!” shouted one of the SWAT officers, as he prepared to engage on the big guy. Another officer gave him a signal to hold his fire when he saw that Tank and a few...others...were actually making an escape route for the hostages.

“We'll deal with it after the civilians are out! For now, stay on the truck!”

-----

Manny heaved an audible sigh of relief as the bank's patrons filed out of the building seemingly unharmed. He realized he had been clenching his teeth for a while, so he loosened the muscles in his jaw and took a swig from the bottle of water on the table near him.

“Well, that's a good sign,” Ellis said as he, too, felt a bit more at ease.

“The hostages may have gotten out, but that doesn't mean it's all over…there's still a lot going on in there, I bet,” Manny said as if speaking from experience.

-----

As the last of the hostages escaped from the building, one of the SWAT officers gave the signal that all was clear.

“...Hostages are are out! Masks on!”

The officers threw on their gas masks and released several tear gas grenades in the direction of the robbers. As the vapor spread throughout the room, the squad rose from cover and advanced on the scene with weapons raised.

“Everyone down on the ground, now, or you will be shot!!!”

Dante sat on another rooftop near the bank heist, nonchalantly watching the display below him. It was a bit of a relief that the police weren’t in his face for once, though this was a good bit of commotion even for someone who wasn’t a fan of the law. He wasn’t about to even try and get involved, but he wasn’t above getting a front-row seat. His rooftop perch was a perfect vantage point...and so was his position in the crowd below. He had created a clone specifically to head down and infiltrate the crowd to get different point of view. Later when he absorbed the clone, he would gain the memory of viewing the events from up close along with his current spot.

It seemed like a typical standoff for a while until a bit of movement out of the corner of his eye caught his attention. As he turned his head, a man a couple of rooftops over was already making a big announcement like he was the main attraction at a circus. Not a moment later, the idiot was shooting off fireworks, for fuck’s sake. At least things were going get a bit more exciting now...and after a very short amount of time, the gunshots sounded…

-----

“Shots fired! Shots fired! Where’s the goddamn SWAT team!” the police captain belted over the now panicked crowd of bystanders and officers alike.

“They’re getting in position as we speak, sir!” squawked a response over the radio.

“Tell them to hurry the hell up! I want no civilian casualties!”

The failed attempt at scaring off the cops and the freak with the explosives had only caused the tension to spike. The thieves were now in ‘last resort’ mode.

“Get up, you idiot! What the fuck was that?! Did your grandma teach you to shoot?” The leader of the squad harshly scooped up his colleague and tapped the mic on his headset. “Alright, this just got too heavy! You’re gonna have to ram it in!”

A few blocks away, an armored truck awaited the signal. Originally, the truck was just supposed to park on the outside and get loaded that way, but the heavy police presence and the strange theatrics had change things up a bit. The driver gunned it around the corner and toward the back side of the bank and hurriedly positioned the truck so that the rear end was facing the wall of the bank. In the same moment, a SWAT truck was quickly unloading several agents half a block away ready to infiltrate the bank. The driver threw the truck in reverse and slammed the gas as hard as he could as shots were fired his way. Barrelling through the brick wall, he continued to crash through the bank until he got to where his crew could load up. Reaching into the passenger’s seat, he grabbed an automatic rifle ready to return fire to the fast approaching SWAT team. Another man in the back of the truck threw the doors open to receive the payload. Mere feet from where the hostages were held, utter chaos ensued as the thieves attempted to load their haul while taking fire from the agents.

Five hours. For five solid hours the beast had been terrorizing downtown New Haven. Powerful jaws with razorlike teeth, claws sharp enough to gouge steel, and muscles that could easily lift a streetcar. But this wasn’t just any beast; the Variant known as Behemoth had gone rogue from N.O.V.A.’s special task force...and not just rogue, but on an all-out rampage. Ravaging block after block, shrugging off bullets and feeble attempts at sedation, letting his feral rage drive him. After four deaths and countless injuries, he had finally been subdued by using an armored truck as a battering ram and 5-inch thick steel rope as a makeshift straitjacket.

N.O.V.A.’s Strike Initiative, a special task force of Variants meant to aid in law enforcement, had been in a shaky state since its inception for various reasons. It had become more of a liability than an asset, and was under heavy fire despite the drop in crime rate. The stress of the job and the treatment from the government as well as the public had pushed one of the more dangerous members, Behemoth, over the edge. He lost control of his power, transforming into his beast form without being able to change back. He basically stopped caring about the welfare of ‘normal’ humans and his abilities took over and did the rest.

It was after this tragedy that N.O.V.A. finally decided to pull the plug. Behemoth was shipped to a secret, secure prison, and the acceptance of Variants would severely decline. And with the ‘threat’ of a superpowered task force removed from the equation, it became open season for any and all criminals, normal and Variant alike.

The scene was complete chaos. Police and news crews swarmed the bank as several helicopters hovered overhead. The members inside were being held hostage as the thieves prepared to escape with their newly swiped riches. This had been the third bank robbery within a month’s time and was looking to be one that would end with casualties. SWAT had been called in several minutes before and were in route.

Manny sat in his apartment with his hands folded, elbows resting on his knees, and his face frozen in contemplation. The spectacle unfolding on the screen was both disturbing and compelling. The need to intervene and the apprehension to do so were waging a war inside his head.

“You should help them, Manny,” his brother Ellis said as he rolled into the room. Manny let out a heavy sigh and slightly tilted his head as Ellis parked his chair. “You can’t just sit back every time and do nothing.”

Manny finally lifted his gaze to his older brother. “The police are there, El. They can handle it.”

“You mean just like the last couple of times…”

“It’s not my job, bro.”

“But it’s perfectly fine to patrol the streets at night like some neighborhood watchmen.”

“You know that’s different...besides it’s not like they would welcome me with open arms and wave me in. Vigilantism is still illegal. Plus, I’m not bulletproof. You’d either be visiting me in a prison or a cemetery.”

“Well…” A defeated look washed across Ellis’ face as he turned back to watch the news. Manny shrugged apologetically and glanced up at the screen himself. For a moment, he considered himself a coward, but he shook off the notion after the realization of the risks involved with using his abilities in such a public way settled in his mind. In uneasy silence, the two brothers continued to watch the events unfold onscreen.
