Quinn’s heart pounded in her chest as she stepped a bit more into the open. Every single muscle in her body screamed at her to bolt, to run back to safety. But she stood her ground, forcing herself to meet the other woman’s gaze.
The world was a harsh teacher, and Quinn had learned its lessons well. Trust was a brittle thing, easily shattered. And yet, here she was, staring down the barrel of a rifle, trying to find the words that wouldn’t get her killed.
“Dollar?” Quinn’s voice cracked, there was a note of amusement in her tone as if she hadn’t expected something so mundane. “I ain’t trying, or lookin’ to cause trouble. Just trying to stay alive. Same as you.” There seemed to be a hint of skepticism in Charley’s eyes, the doubt that clung to her like a second skin. Quinn didn’t blame her. Hell, she’d be just as wary if the roles were reversed - there was no other choice - The fever was burning through her friend, eating away at whatever time they had left.
“Listen… I’ve got a friend back there. I don’t know how long he’s got, and I’m not asking for much. Just enough to keep him going a little while longer. If that’s something you can do…” She trailed off, leaving the rest unsaid. She wouldn’t beg. Couldn’t. Pride was one of the few things she had left, even if it was a foolish thing to cling to.
