"Listen, Alayna. I've heard all the damn rumors... And I don't believe them for a second. If you meant to betray us, you'd have done it already." Rebecca took a long, slow sip of her water. "No offense." Eventually, Rebecca found her way over to her assigned seat, smack between Iris and Alex. She was rather comfortable with both of them, but after all these years, there wasn't anybody she really wasn't on good terms with.

"Sorry I'm a little tardy, you two. But then again, it is appropriate for a medium to be late, you know?" She giggled a tad at her own hideous pun, then sighed. "Honestly, I just want today to be over. All this anticipation, wondering what the elders have in store for us- it's playing all sorts of hell with my nerves."
"And I'm Cassandra," the blonde said with a grin. "If you ever need someone well-versed in the Dark Arts, come find me. I admit, it's usually not the most in-demand of magical talents, but it does have its uses." She took the flask from Kate, noting the deep green color of the contents. As she pocketed it, she gave the potioneer a gentle, almost imperceptible nod. "Thank you, Kate. You're right; these will help me create some pretty cool new spells, or at least travel with them."

She then gave Jeremy the once-over; it didn't exactly hurt that he was attractive in an off-beat sort of way. "No offense meant, Jeremy, but it's somewhat odd to see a newcomer here for the first time at the initiation. Honestly, you've got me kind of curious. Why join the Dying Branch instead of another coven? Why us?"
"I get you, Alayna. But it's all they've been working for, all these years. They just want to see all their hard work- and ours- pay off." Rebecca smiled as she took a small spoonful of potatoes, her voice dropping to a whisper. "And- though you didn't hear this from me- I'm eager to see what I can do with the power of the wellspring at my beck and call. I've been working on channeling ghosts, but I'm not quite strong enough. Everything I get is... fuzzy." The medium shrugged as a gust of wind blew a leaf onto her nose, and she wiped it off with a sneeze. "But that's neither here nor there. We'll be able to do what we'll be able to do, I guess."

"You know, I kind of envy you. The physical is all around us, and you just need to reach out your hand to make it obey you. Me, I need to go out and find the spirits, whether in the world or the next. It's not as... available. What about you, Alayna? Anything you've been working on? I mean, I guess there's only so much you can do with elementalism, but surely there's something up your sleeve."
“Well, most of them are good people. I’m a little bit nervous about Summer and Charlie, though. You know how I act? That’s how she actually is. And Charlie’s just an asshole, plain and simple.” Cassandra smiled as Kate slid in on her other side. Everyone thought her magic was dangerous, but the potioneer made her nervous. She could easily slip something into your soda, and you’d never have a clue. Not that she thought Kate would ever do something like that. The two had a pretty professional relationship, and Cassandra often asked her for potion advice.

“But Kate? She’s the best of the bunch,” Cassandra said with a grin as she raised her glass of Coke in salute. “Say, Kate, you got any more of that diced sentimentality? I need it for something I’m working on. New way of storing spells.”
Rebecca was at the party early, as always. She wasn’t the kind of girl to waste a second of her day- she’d learned that time was precious from her magic. The medium looked at a seemingly empty space, a few of her pals from the world beyond were here for her. Jennifer gave her a little nod. The other girl was dressed in the robes she’d hoped to wear for her binding, all those years ago. “It’ll be fine, Beck. If it was supposed to be harmful, they wouldn’t do it.”

“I know, I know, but I’m still a little nervous. What if my powers aren’t strong enough?”

“You’re one of the most talented witches I’ve ever met. Trust your magic, and you’ll succeed.”

The redhead motioned her agreement to the spirit, then went to join the living. She shivered a little bit, heat be damned- she always felt uncomfortable when she returned to her flesh and blood body after projecting for a little while. She’d hoped it would be gone by now, but it seemed today’s situation was worse than normal. Alas.

She got herself a small plate of vegetables and found her spot, next to Alayna. Not a bad choice of partner for the day. “Hey there, Layna. Hope you’re ready for the big show.”
“Gotta say, I love the ribs. Great stuff- wonder if they enchanted the sauce.” Cassandra looked up as a sparrow started singing. It was the perfect addition to the scenery. The witch smiled as she took another big bite. She simply had to find out who was manning the grill and get some lessons. But there would be time for that after the ceremony.

“By the spirits, look at the two of us. The quiet boy and little miss Goth, having a nice warm conversation like old friends. What’s this going to do to our reputations?” She giggled. “Let me tell you a secret- it’s all bullshit. I mean, my magic’s not exactly the happy sort, so that’s what people expect. And that’s what I give them. But if you don’t let your hair down, you’ll go nuts.” Cassandra grunted as she forced through a tough bit of meat. “It is what it is, I guess. But don’t tell anyone!”
@Canaryrose edited my face claim
Cassandra grunted as she walked deep into the woods, a little bit depressed at seeing all the other witchlings there with their parents. She would have liked nothing more than to have her parents with her, but fate had conspired to make that impossible long ago. Still, as she thought about it, the coven had become her family. And today, she was going to make that the truth. It was one of the extremely rare days she could get away with not being gloomy and keep her reputation. Sometimes, it did pay to be a little happy.

The witch brushed a pale hair out of her eyes and looked around at the assembled youngsters, feeling the electric crackle of raw, untapped magic cutting through the trees. This is it. The day we've all been waiting for. I never thought it would actually come. Cassandra picked out a plate stacked to the sky with barbecue- her figure wasn’t exactly high on her list of priorities right now. Heading up to Uaithne, the cursewright flashed a winning smile- or at least, what she thought was one. It probably wasn’t, but oh well.

“Hey, Uaithne. You ready for all this?” So much for small talk.
