SALSA VERDE

▅▅▅▅austin | ♏︎ | he/him | 28 | vegan

Hi, I’m Salsa Verde, arguably the best salsa and formally known as the writer, Syn. I’m a Wildlife Biologist traveling the country looking to work with the coolest: herps, mammals, birds, and invertebrates I can get my hands on. I also like plants, trees, and fungi specifically. I’ve been writing for about 13 years now and recently decided to get back into it. I enjoy anything from casual to high roleplay, 1x1, and arena. My main genres tend to be anime, SOL, and superhero but I’m really down to participate in anything. And yeah I like all that weeb shit.

News traveled fast in her little prefecture, well of course it would given how small it was compared to others. Nara was always a short stop for anyone taking the Shinkansen or JR line to Kyoto or Osaka. With her acceptance in Ishin Academy, no one could not be happy for her, except maybe for herself. As she passed the familiar scrapyard, she spent countless hours pillaging a tinge of doubt crept into her mind. This was more of a home than her own, that’s not to say her parents or home life was awful, but rather it was all she’d known and would have continued to know if she got rejected. Congratulations from strangers and neighbors alike showered her as she walked down the streets passing store after store. Even the friendly deer bucked and bowed in respect of Haruhi. The local mochi maker had just finished his intense routine of smacking and shaping the delicious morsels of rice cakes, giving Haruhi the first of the batch. It was all too much to take in, but she wore the same brave face and inviting smile she always had.

There was a first for everything, in this case it was a sense of fear she had never known, her first day of a budding four-year career at IA, and the first time she would be hours away from her hometown. Turning her head back one last time, she caught the glimpse of all the children and workers mulling about with their own quirks. If there was, anyway, she could help a prefecture even as small as Nara as a hero then her time at IA would be all the more worth it. Her fear quickly dissipated, and the lively green haired metal head rushed off to the bullet train, mochi stuck in her fangs.

In a world where quirks existed, the though of magic existing wasn’t so far-fetched of course. Haruhi pulled from a small pouch one ring sized screw that she would wear on her finger. To pass the time she relied on a little magic trick of her own, the gryphon roll. The ring glided down all of her fingers and back up as if was magically floating up and down off the tops of her fingers. In reality magic didn’t exist, and it was just a sleight of hand trick, but that didn’t stop her from putting on magic shows for the kids at home. Boarding the bullet train, she sat down near the window and naturally floated away into better dreams, fog building up on the window from her hot breath on the windows.

Stepping out of the train was like walking into a freezer that fell into a frozen lake. Immediately she sneezed abruptly with a cartoonishly large snot bubble oozing out of her nose. Her eyes felt heavy and her mouth was agape, this cold weather and Hokkaido was all new to her. It didn’t help that she was still in overalls and a tshirt. After putting on layers of clothes and burning her tongue on some green tea she was feverishly back to her normal self. The site enough alone of Ishin Academy was enough to leave anyone speechless. The building dwarfed any building she had ever seen at home, hell even the crowds of people were vaster in size. Her eyes lit up like a child in a candy store as she couldn’t decided what to look or shout at first.

Without a moment to waste Haruhi rolled up her sleeves, muscle memory from back home before she got into the thick of anything, and rushed neck deep into the crowd. “Go go! Get out of my way! Ughhhh I have to go!” She pushed and shoved here and there, nothing maliciously it was just in her energetic nature. The bodies weren’t so different the heaps of trashed she waded through anyways. Eager to push to the front and see the academy from the inside she kept working her way through like a rampaging bull until she finally broke rank and tripped and stumbled inside.

“I’m Yano! Yano Haruhi! Nice to meet ya ain’t it?!” she said effervescently rubbing her nose and a soft chuckle through a wide toothed grin.

"Me? I just like striking when the iron is hot!"

Personal Dossier

Name
(八野) Yano, Haruhi (ハルヒ)

Age
15 ("Juu-go sai desu!")

Origin
Nara-shi, Nara Prefecture, Japan

Physical Description
All cheeks and lips or rather those are the first two predominant features noticed when first meeting Haruhi. Her natural allure rests in the fact that she is almost always seen with an unabashed smile leading almost everyone to feel an instant connection and overall happiness or comfort when greeting her. Besides her blushing rose colored cheeks her hair is another source of appeal with it being naturally colored in the shade of an almost shinier pastel green. Perhaps it was a side effect of gaining her quirk or just some genetic mutation. Whatever the case would be, Haruhi would wear her hair color proudly and make it a centerpiece of her hero-to-be persona, along with her matching eye color.

Other than her enchanting eyes and hair the rest of her physique was quite normal or even average in what you would expect from a fifteen-year-old girl. Her figure wasn’t diminutive nor was it giant, she instead stood at a modest height of 164 centimeters. The rest of her body is quite slim with a body weight never exceeding 49 kilograms. Although she looks dainty and sweet, there is a certain roughness she possesses. Due to her choice of hobbies her hands usually develop several callouses to the point she doesn’t bother painting her nails or using lotion. Not only that but she is usually quite dirt and bruised when she’s not at school. Something she seems to find a merit in rather than embarrassment.

Characterization

  • Energetic
  • Outgoing
  • Vivacious
  • Determined

Haruhi is one who always looks forward and never looks back. Her desires, passions, and general curiosity of how the world works dictate her autonomy. This has manifested over the years like a precious metal being tempered until perfect. The process is yet to be complete, but so far, the fruits of its labor can be consumed in how Haruhi presents herself now. Her natural aura radiates positivity to the point where she doesn’t even need to spare a thought of negativity. That’s not to say she’s uncapable of experiencing it, just that she hasn’t ever been in a position to be exposed to it. She lives her life in the moment and in the clouds, this unfortunately gives her a more ‘aloof’ and ‘airheaded’ appearance than she means to give off. She just rather focus on dismantling a metal warehouse screw by screw than the current social fad.

Personal History
For lack of a better word, Haruhi’s personal history was ‘uneventful’. She never had any issues with herself or her family. They were your regular nuclear family with two children, the latter sibling not coming into play until she was well on her way to Ishin academy. You could say it was her parent’s way of keeping busy while she was sent off. Anyways, during her childhood she was a bit abnormal compared to the other kids. Her curiosity of the world got the better of her when she would watch her father assemble countless pieces of furniture for her and her mother. Not only furniture but the family car, kitchen and bathroom appliances, hell anything that needed some assembly and nuts or bolts. She mirrored her dad in this way but with one slight difference, she disassembled everything and by everything Haruhi literally unscrewed anything she could get her hands on. She traced her fingers from manual to manual working backwards instead of from step 1. It started with small basic things until it got out of hand and warranted the intervention of her father. Neither of her parents saw this as problem, but rather an opportunity to teach.

And so, despite some dejected sighs and shallow laughs her father guided her from her disassembly to final product with everything. Eventually as her quirk began to manifest, it made her productivity and hobby even easier and less dangerous with the retirement of certain power tools. With this her father took her under his wing allowing her to both help and observe everything he did and built. When she wasn’t with her father, instead of going to the mall or the movies with a gang of friends like the stereotypical adolescent. Haruhi instead found herself wandering off into the nearest scrapyard or chop shop in which she exposed herself more to her lifelong passion. Countless nights were spent digging through scrap, disassembling, and honing in on her quirk potential or at least what a double digit aged kid could master at that age (which wasn’t very much). Metal and the local Nara deer invoked her to seek out a way to share her knowledge and be something more. Despite being in love with metal the sound of being an engineer or warehouse worker didn’t appeal to her. She wanted to use her quirk for the greater good and be a voice for the provocative minds out there that don’t get a voice just because they aren’t as physically flashy quirk or not.

Her goals may not have been on par with the fire that some of the students who had chosen to go pro from going through adversity or just sheer ambition from a young age, but it was a respectable one none the less. Thoughts of being in the top 10 or even a symbol for the people were at the very back of her mind, she just wanted to take one step at a time. Given her parents blessings the young and vibrant green headed girl applied for Ishin academy and never looked back.

Character Development & Conceptualization
I have multiple goals for Harui. One of the first things I would like to work on for her is strengthening her powers. Right now, she thinks her only ability and limitation is the control of metals and the attraction and repulsion of them to her. I would like her to fully understand and learn how to use her metal manipulation in both support and offensive. Perhaps if we get far enough have her proficient enough to manipulate quicksilver.

Another facet of Haruhi’s character I want to tackle is having her meet the ugliness the world can bring, as you can gather from her bio and personality she’s never really had to think or feel sad or scared of anything that wasn’t beyond her comprehension. She lived in a sort of bubble if you will. While she did have access to TV and news media she never once bothered with it as she spent most of her time outside or in her own methodical world. I want her to feel despair in order to empathize with everyone. To be able to lean on others and ground herself more to reality to fully flesh out her path and choice to be a hero.

The previous hope for Haruhi goes hand in hand with my next point. Haruhi has never had friends nor needed to dabble with the idea of teamwork. She had always been an army of one or even two on occasion if you count her dad. She has no coordination with anyone other than herself and does not know how to trust others with her life and safety. Nor does she know how to play off the strength or weaknesses of other or had to think about what other dangerous quirks could exist out of her prefecture. Building a strong support network and lifelong friendships well into both adult and pro hero life would be something I’d like her see grow into.

Last but not least I would love to see Haruhi create her own agency in which she specializes in teaching kids with quirks that aren’t purely offensive and can be used more meticulously in shaping the battlefield and knowing how to deal with surroundings/environments that aren’t beneficial for their specific quirk. But before she can even think of starting an agency, she would need to know what it takes to be and exemplify not just the hero she wants to be but a hero in general. I want her to learn new things about herself, the hero association, and through her teachers on how to really become a hero worth making note of.

Abilities & Talents

Quirk Type
Emitter

Quirk Description
Nuts and Bolts is the name she bestowed to her quirk. Her quirk allows her to manipulate any and all metal that she can encounter. In a basic sense this quirk has capabilities that extend to the creation, shape, and manipulation. The ceiling and trajectory for her metal manipulation is quite high, but for now she’s stuck to rather basic abilities. She trademarked the name nuts and bolts because it is what she identifies with the most. From childhood she’s always unscrewed and screwed back in thousands if not hundreds of thousands of screws, washers, anything that holds items together. With this she carries around small pouches of regular screws in her pockets and on her person in order to use her quirk. So far, she can attract and repulse her screws and most stray pieces of metal she can find as projectiles akin to arrows or bullets. From the metal she can accumulate she can also coat singular limbs or parts of her body with a thin layer of screws or metal (e.g. coat her hand to make a makeshift gauntlet or a small breastplate to take the brunt of the force out of an attack). She can also unscrew structures from a distance close in proximity at an augmented rate and pull/push herself to/from metal surfaces.

Her weakness however in this ability is the abundance of metal in her environment. If there is nothing she can manipulate in her nearby vicinity and she no longer has her bags of screws and scrap metal, she has no way of utilizing her quirk as she cannot create metal on her own yet. Not only this but her control of metal is directly proportionate to her size. For now, she cannot control or move any metal that is larger than her in both height and weight.

Other Talents & Attributes
Mind Map - The only other attribute she really prides herself on is her brain. She looks at almost everything as if were a blueprint always trying to pick it apart in her head so she can find out how it works.

Human Sponge – Not really a marketable ability but Haruhi is quite often seen around carrying a cup of water with a bendy straw. She tries to drink more than three liters a day and almost always refilling her cup in between classes. It’s bizarre how much water she can drink without drowning herself.

The arguing that had been going back and forth with no end in sight became muted sounds in the background, something straight out of Charlie brown. His peripheral blurred as if he had just taken off prescription glasses. His vision tunneled on one sole piece inside the room, the clock. Xan watched as the second hand ticked in place, stuck in an eternal battle between the thirtieth second and the one after. It was weird to think time could be static when it had all but coalesced into one giant jump to his senior year here and now. He’d be lying if he wasn’t wishing for time to actually freeze so they could just get their things and head out in the massive heap of a zombie apocalypse, but unfortunately for them their time was running out. With his life slipping away he was finally snapped out of his smoldering gaze when they finally came to a consensus to finally leave the teachers lounge.

The instant he looked away from the clock leaving it behind, the hand started to move again, his imagination? Who knew? A voice he never knew slipped out of him agreeing to make a run for it to the cafeteria with the fearless cheerleader and the softball prodigy. Anything was better than suffocating in a tiny room. His heart throbbed from the adrenaline coursing through his veins causing every surface he touched to reverb the heartbeats in his fingers. Kaylee was the first to speak, suggesting to stop by classrooms along the way. “I don’t think we should grab too many backpacks; it’ll just make it easier for the zombies to latch onto if we get caught” Xan said sheepishly, trying his best not to alarm any of the statuesque beings surrounding t hem. “Although the other classrooms may have better weapons like the chem lab.”

Despite food being mostly everyone’s priority, Xan’s was not. It’s not that he didn’t want to eat but rather he was okay not eating. The human body could survive without food from anywhere between a week to several. Water and finding a way out were his main priority and so while the others foraged for food, he foraged his mind for other ideas to increase their chances of making it out. “Maybe we should just stock up on water and grab whatever manageable cans we can carry” licking his chapped lips in a shaken breath he suggested something else. “Do you think if we managed to kill one of these, we could smell like them and get by easier? You know like find one by itself in a classroom and just close the door behind us.” Xan knew the risks behind trying such an outlandish idea, but if it worked the pay off would be just as great as the risk. Although inspiring students whom probably haven’t even killed a spider would be hard to rally behind killing a zombified human.
Hello
It was out of the frying pan and into the fire or so it seemed. There wasn’t but a moment of reprieve for Kvasir nor his comrades when the wagon was once again launched ass if it were made of paper mache. Before the wagon was launched and he had been laughing at the talking dog a shiver passed through him as the hairs on his neck stood on end. It wasn’t the swamp causing the problems this time, it was something else or rather someone else.

His instincts reacted faster than his mind like always. Using the momentum in which the wagon was tumbling, Kvasir propelled himself off the wagon and towards the direction of the beast instead of backing away. Klaus had a similar plan but instead sent his ghoulish ships to bombard the strange figure. Hopefully the cannon fire and sheer size of the ship would cloak Kvasir’s body as he rocketed towards the fiend.

It was all for not however since Klaus’ attack seemed sufficient enough to put down the creature. Kvasir never trusted one attack to fully euthanize an enemy. To ensure he was dead, Kvasir landed viciously onto the ground beside the creature before raising his foot to bring it down aiming to curb stomp the creatures head.

Just as he was getting comfortable with his second bowl of stew, Simon once again opened his gullet and this time it wasn’t to eat his stew. His spoon stopped while his mouth stayed agape for what seemed like ages. It was a miracle hadn’t flown into it for a night or even worse. With every word he spoke the creases on his forehead increased, a sign of aging like that of the rings within a tree stump. Catching every other word and trying to decode the rest his eyebrow twitched before he dropped his spoon into the stew leaving splashes of cream on his jacket. “Listen if you don’t start speaking English better than a newborn, I’m gonna have to crack you one every time you speak like that. You’re annoying..” Joseppi tugged his hat down casting a shadow on his gaze once more to appear a little more menacing than before.

“Huh?” Joseppi almost forgot that Donny had left despite having shrugged it off not even five minutes ago. Oh well there was no use to waste resources looking for him, if they decided to, he would stay at the camp and rest on his own. “Don’t bother wasting your time neon, if Airbag can’t sense him in the air that means he’s as good as gone. Matter fact Airbag can finish putting that there tent together.” Airbag rose out of Joseppi like a ghostly apparition and headed over to the tent and helping neon. His attention was redirected back to Jules though. “Lest I forget you’re gonna tell me what happened before the end of the race or our deal is off” he noted, “Misunderstandings don’t tend to lead hitman from across the oceans to hunt down one girl.”

Finally, she spoke a lick of sense, maybe he had misjudged her then again maybe not. “You guys go ahead I’m going to stay out here for a while.”

Words were only getting them so far.

It seemed with every wave of new ideas there was an equally proportionate voice that eroded away at any thought of entertaining an idea. It was clear as day the anger was wearing thin on the faces of the many teenage high schoolers in such a cramped room. Unfortunately for Xan he had exhausted all of his usefulness for the time being, despite being quite the introvert and avid PC gamer, no matter of zombie portrayal in media would help him survive this. He had no provisions to offer in the beginning unless you count a crumpled paper bag with apple slices with brown discolorations.

Saying the heat wasn’t getting to him would be nothing but a farce. All the talking and closed airways was turning the room into the sauna. Surely dying in a sauna would have been better than being torn to pieces by the undead, too bad they couldn’t just feed exhaust fumes from Jaden’s car into the room. At least that would have been less painful than this. Elvina’s sudden tongue lash was equally as hot as the rising temperature in the room. She had a point, seniority in this case was anything but helpful. But then again none of this squabbling was getting them anywhere either.

And so, the carousel of arguments went on and on while even Xan’s patience began to wear thin. Just as he was about to join the disorder, Elliot spoke up once again. There was some sort of soothing property to her speech, something he only read in comics when Scott Summer or Stever Rodgers spoke to rally their respective teams together. It was about time everyone put their differences aside and worked together to get out of this room at least. Taking the first steps out of the rest of the crew, Xan walked towards Elliot. Taking his place adjacent to her he looked at the rest of the lounge and raised his arm as if being called on by the teacher. “I agree, lets just get out of here. After we find a way outside you don’t have to stick around if you don’t want to. We can get that far at least, right?”

Kvasir had been busy punching trees outside until his knuckles were raw, but more importantly trying for the last half an hour to catch quite the elusive fly that had been pestering him for the last several days. This however was not guild etiquette especially in display of any onlookers even reporters to say the least. The violent giant still fresh blood to the guild was gently reminded of this by Aiden when he came waltzing outside. The mage full of grace and poise snatched the fly out of the air by its wings before handing it to the savage brute. He crushed it just as quickly as he obtained it leaving nothing more than a litany of body parts. Aiden spoke of a mission to some place called Bludmach, he didn’t really pay much attention besides a few grunts to show he was fine with whatever the guild needed.

The wagon was more or less, broken. It was quite the miracle it was able to house Kvasir, Eldrid who was rivaling his stature for a woman, and the dog that could stand on just his hind legs. Whether it was a party trick or magic, Kvasir couldn’t tell but similarly found it too exciting to care. Bludmach’s decrepit environment had done nothing in the way of alarming Kvasir. He had been used to seeing harsh environments on his way to Winter’s Blade from the countryside. Unfortunately for Klaus, Kvasir’s attention had been on him the entirety of the ride. Kvasir couldn’t help but feel a strange compulsion to comb through the dog’s fur looking for any kind of fleas or ticks.
”Haha silly doggy”
he thought until he was violently thrown across the wagon into the fiery red head. Kvasir propped himself up with what appeared to be a hand on Eldrid’s bosom.

The first to respond was the gruff cowboy that had originally been the source of his tumultuous start to the race. All ill will for the burly man had seemingly left his body in one go as if he had burrowed his anger into his face already. Oddly enough his face did appear to have some off colored bruising now that he thought about it. Not putting too much stock into it he simply shrugged off the notion that the two could possibly be connected. Airbag however shook her head and open palm in unison before collapsing her face onto her head to hide further disappointment.

Making sure to continually stir his stew as to not burn any of the contents he simply cocked his eyebrows in retort to Simon. “Yeah matter of a fact she wasn’t the only one hunting this one over here. Not to scare y’all any further but I spotted one of them Nazi looking fellows gazing in her direction. Now I know that ain’t much to go off of, but after all the years of detective work, I got under my belt you start getting a gut feeling for these things. Shame it was off for you Simon, I do not know how I got that one wrong. Must of done something in a past life” Joseppi said laughing while attempting to taste his stew.

It needed a few more spices before it was complete otherwise it tasted succulent. Turning to his bag once more he noticed Annie had gone her own way and retrieved a tent. Joseppi was kind of bummed out having thought they were simply going to rough it out and sleep under the gaze of the starry night. A tent didn’t sound so bad once he thought it over. Perhaps first watch would go to him and free up some space for the others seeing as Simon was fat and Joseppi was no teacup himself.

The rest of the ingredients went in and he stirred a few more times before removing from the fire. He divided the stew into equal portions, hand delivering it to each of his newly found companions. Except for Donny who he somehow managed to lose, horse and all. He’d eventually find his way back or at the next neck of the race if anything. Sitting back down he faced Jules once more, “Yes quite wonderful. Now tell me this miss, how did a dainty thing like yourself get tangled up in this kind of mess with these kinds of people? You seem pretty harmless got a pretty face to keep you out of trouble even” Joseppi blew on his spoon before stomaching down his stew. “There’s something you ain’t telling me and I need to know if I’m going to protect you until the end.”

He stopped eating with the slights delivered by the devious woman, perhaps she was a criminal and just playing dumb. “That’s fine with me, the bounty never said I needed you back alive miss nor in one piece. Go with him if you want or that lady on that account” he continued, “I did catch a look and seems like he’s not the type you want to get wrangled with miss.” Joseppi finished his bowl before dipping into what would have been Donny’s. The fire crackled between the four of them, the only thing that drowned out the desserts silence.
